Easter Weekend PICKS: Thursday, April 14th thru Sunday, April 17th

Get ready! We’ve compiled the most comprehensive list of this Easter weekend’s events in Missoula and around Western Montana, all right here for you to make your own Weekend PICKS.
Since we’re still firmly mired in “third winter” for several more days, there is no shortage of indoor activities to pass the time inside away from the biting winds. (Or is it “fourth winter”? We’re losing track.)
The upside of “third (or fourth) winter” has fresh snow on all the surrounding peaks – if you need to get in one more downhill in fresh powder, or to exercise the XC skis one more time – this weekend is your chance! Call ahead to check conditions, but most if not all the local ski areas are squeezing out one or two more weekends of operation with the latest snow at high elevations. Most of us have parked our snow gear for the year, and we’re rotating out our spring outdoor sports collection. “Mud season” is already drying out, TNR is well into the MTB phase for the Thursday Night Rides, and getting up to the top of Mount Sentinel for this week’s brisk adventure.
We’re counting more than 70 live music shows of one kind or another in the area. We’ve got options!
The winter markets on Saturdays are winding down to the last weekend or two to get your local early spring produce fix handled. There are some good markets and craft shows for the weekend, and lots of choices to get the kids out for Easter Egg hunts and awkward Easter Bunny pictures.
No matter what direction you wanna get outta town, you can’t go wrong. Activities and events are happening not only around Missoula, but all the way up the Flathead and the Bitterroot valleys, and Phillipsburg.
Get out and enjoy our locally-owned bars & restaurants with Montana grown / made food and beverages. Catch a classic movie screening or a stand-up comedy night. Stretch that big brain at one of the local trivia nights. Sing your favorite karaoke song, or catch a live music show. Enjoy safely and responsibly.
Please confirm event details at the source before you go. Last minute changes are common, especially due to weather. With each event listing, we try to include a web page or event link with more information you can check for changes.

For each show the ZACC and KBGA partner with a different organization and host local music performed at the ZACC Show Room, with proceeds going to that month’s organization.
April’s performance boasts a former KBGAer Noelle Huser and her band No, playing in support of Make Your Move Missoula! No is the indie-pop/alt-rock project of Noelle Huser joined by Erin and Duncan Szalda-Petree (of ESP), Ally Fradkin, and Caleb Tutty. They are currently working on their debut album Cold Sweat, which is set to release in 2022. Huser encapsulates the fever dream of her formative early adult years as she reflects on the past and grapples with the messy emotions of her present. Make Your Move! Missoula engages us as allies to prevent sexual violence in the greater Missoula area. This multi-faceted, inter-agency approach creates long-term, positive change by changing the beliefs and behaviors that support sexual violence, thus creating a safer and healthier community.

ZACC is proud to partner with filmmaker Andy Smetanka for the first public screening of his feature-length Missoula documentary, A Place (Sort Of): A Movie Mosaic of Missoula, Montana. Seven years in the making, Smetanka’s documentary skillfully weaves a century of home movies, vintage promotional films and minor Hollywood features into a spellbinding journey through time, place and memory. ZACC’s April 15 presentation is a special version of the film, with the same vintage imagery and 100% Missoula musical soundtrack, only minus the final narration. It’s a rare opportunity to experience the ultra-local version he really set out to make, Smetanka tells us: “This is the one I dreamed about making,” he says. “For the rest of the world, Missoula might take some explaining. For Missoulians, not so much.”

Jesus Christ Superstar 2020 – Worldwide Premiere
Rialto Theater
418 Main St, Deer Lodge, Montana
It’s been two-years in the making, and finally makes it’s debut on Easter weekend! During the Spring of 2020 during COVID-19 Lockdowns, a theatre group defied all-odds and shot a digital version of Jesus Christ Superstar on a small Montana Farm outside of Deer Lodge.
Location: Rialto Theater
Time: 8:00 PM on both Friday, April 15th and Saturday, April 16th (The film is around 90 minutes)
Ticket Price: Normal admission price for a movie at the Rialto Theater.
Jesus Christ Superstar is a sung-through rock opera with music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyrics by Tim Rice. Loosely based on the Gospels’ accounts of the Passion, the work interprets the psychology of Jesus and other characters, with much of the plot centered on Judas, who is dissatisfied with the direction in which Jesus is steering his disciples. Contemporary attitudes, sensibilities and slang pervade the rock opera’s lyrics, and ironic allusions to modern life are scattered throughout the depiction of political events. Stage and film productions accordingly contain many intentional anachronisms. Initially unable to get backing for a stage production, the composers released it as a concept album, the success of which led to the show’s Broadway on-stage debut in 1971. By 1980, the musical had grossed more than $237 million worldwide. Running for over eight years in London between 1972 and 1980, it held the record for longest-running West End musical before it was overtaken by Cats in 1989.

Larry Hirshberg
Philipsburg Brewing Co. – The Springs
106 Brewery Rd, Philipsburg, Montana
“When I played at The Springs in the fall, it was Mining Days or some such celebratory whoop-de-doo. The event culminated in the random, startling, unimaginably loud blowing of an old mine horn, about 4 meters from my head – or, to put it another way, about a mile closer to me than I would have been comfortable with. I feel confident that won’t happen again at this show. One reason why I love Philipsburg, and the people there, is because they too, occasionally go too far.”

Zootown Arts Community Center
216 W Main Street, Missoula, Montana
To purchase advance tickets visit: https://showroom.zootownarts.org/…/revival-comedy…/
This month, Revival Comedy is dishing out an hour of laughs in order to raise funds for Five Valleys Land Trust, an amazing group committed to protecting western Montana’s river corridors, wildlife habitat, agricultural lands, and community open spaces — all since 1972. Our April non-profit was chosen by headliner Sugarbush, who is taking top bill at the ZACC for the very first time. Don’t miss supporting this great cause by laughing at a bunch of jokes! Other stellar stand-up comedians performing to protect our land include Becky Margolis, Cody Trogdon, John Dollar, Maddy Halland, and Aaron Juhl. Hosted by Sarah Aswell.

Ben Roy Live
VFW – Missoula
245 W. Main, Missoula, Montana
Ben Roy has been taking comedy audiences by storm since 2004, bringing an unparalleled energy and unique voice to the stage. Often compared to Lewis Black or Bill Hicks due to his passionate, ranting approach, Roy has a style that is definitively his own.Roy cut his comedic teeth in Denver at the world famous Comedy Works. Since then, he has been selected to perform at the Montreal Just for Laughs Comedy Festival, Just For Laughs Toronto, Just For Laughs Chicago, The New York Comedy Festival, Austin’s South by Southwest festival, and many more. Roy has been featured on HBO’s Funny as Hell series; as well as on the Comedy Central shows Adam DeVine’s House Party, Corporate, @midnight, and This Is Not Happening. Ben has also released four stand-up comedy albums and was listed as one of Variety’s Top 10 Comics to Watch. Along with fellow Denver Comedians Adam Cayton-Holland and Andrew Orvedahl (who collectively perform as The Grawlix), Ben created, wrote, and starred in TruTV’s original scripted comedy series Those Who Can’t, which now has all three seasons available for streaming on HBOMax. He’s also currently host of two popular podcasts, 97.9 The Rat Race on the All Things Comedy network and, along with Orvedahl and Cayton-Holland, The Grawlix Saves the World available on The Starburns Audio Network. In addition to stand-up comedy, acting, and podcasting, Roy is a prolific musician and the current lead singer of pop punk outfit SPELLS.
