Halloweekend PICKS: Thursday, October 28th thru Sunday, October 31st

BOO! – Can you believe it’s the end of October already? The MUG is here to help you haunt your best life through the Halloweekend.
Where are the Halloween parties at? Where AREN’T they? Halloween is back with a vengeance this year, with most establishments and venues having some sort of spooky-themed party going on. Pace yourself, young Jedi – there are some great parties happening every night from Thursday through Sunday. Don’t blow it all out on the first night, or you’ll miss some great shows at the tail end of the weekend.
For the littles, there are opportunities abound for some great “trunk or treat” – a great way to check out some cool classic and custom cars while the kids fill their bags with enough sugary goodness to keep ’em awake ’til Thanksgiving.
What else is happening? This weekend will be the last of the major outdoor farmers markets for the season. The harvest bounty is high – get out on Saturday morning to stock up on your fall and winter veggies to get your kitchen through the upcoming long winter months.
Last but certainly not least – Griz home game vs. Southern Utah starting Saturday at Noon at Washington Grizzly Stadium. Military Appreciation Day is the theme for this weekend’s game – it’ll be a great game. We’re thinking it’ll be prime weather for tailgating and watching our Montana Grizzlies send the Thunderbirds home with their tailfeathers between their legs – Go GRIZ!
Get out and enjoy our remaining late-season area farmers markets, bars & restaurants with Montana grown / made food and beverages. Sing a spooky karaoke song, or catch a comedy show. Enjoy safely and responsibly.
Please note that events are subject to cancellation or change at the last minute. Be sure to check the event links to confirm your plans.

6:00 pm – 8:00 pm
The Recession Special
Draught Works Brewery
915 Toole Avenue, Missoula, Montana
The Recession Special are a band of buskers, carnival barkers, and workhouse escapees. With a unique blend of old tyme music, folk punk, and swing, they burst off of the stage with energy, theatrics, humor, and political edge.
The Recession Special formed in quarantine during the summer of 2020. Dusty The Kid (guitar/banjo) and Geoff “Bucky-Eyed” Taylor (fiddle) started busking together in downtown Missoula, MT in the wake of the collapse of the live music industry. Soon joined by Finn “Stovepipe” Carroll on bass and Thrift Storrs Bishop on washboard, the group began to amass a small following of tramps, local characters, and college students hungry for the return of live music.
Taking their name from the Old Post Pub’s once fabled menu item for the down-and-out, the band seeks to bring the spirit of resistance and resilience back to folk music, and to remind listeners that no matter how hard times get, there’s always a place for dancing in the revolution.

Zootown Arts Community Center
216 W. Main St., Missoula, Montana
To purchase tickets visit: https://www.zootownarts.org/…/the-quiet-ruckus…/343688
The Quiet Ruckus Octet is a genre-blurring jazz octet that aims to showcase many of Missoula’s finest improvising musicians in a dynamic and spontaneous little-big-band. As an eight-piece ensemble (five horns and rhythm section), the band captures the power of a big band, along with the intimacy and spontaneity of a small ensemble. The night will feature original music by bandleader/trombonist Mitchell Bailey, along with arrangements of music by Wayne Shorter, Alan Ferber, Chris Cornell and more. In the tradition of bands such as The Bad Plus, The John Hollenbeck Large Ensemble, we hope to both present original takes on classic works of the jazz cannon, as well as reinforce and celebrate the musical contributions of our time.
The Quiet Ruckus Octet is:
Mitchell Bailey — Trombone/Composition
Skyler Mendell — Trumpet
Lhanna Writesel — Alto Saxophone
Garret Waters — Tenor Saxophone
Michelle Sweeney — Bari Saxophone
Connor Racicot — Piano
Finn Caroll — Bass
Ed Stalling – Percussion

Special Halloween Show – The Skurfs + Nightwitch + Margi Cates & Nick Barr + Cheesey Turtles
Zootown Arts Community Center
216 W Main Street, Missoula, Montana
$10 in advance or at the door
Get advance tickets at: https://showroom.zootownarts.org/
THE SKURFS
The Skurfs are the world’s penultimate ski-surf band! Following in the footsteps of ski-folk king Bob Gibson and the original Avalanches, the Skurfs mix aggressive surf sounds with the inspiration of winter sports and Yuletide celebrations! Featuring Danny Venture and Donny McBride on duel guitars, Molson Slice on bass and Jonnie Kinfills on the skins, the Skurfs hail from Skurf City USA, aka Missoula MT, and have entertained countless crowds there and in the region since 2010. Within their sound the mountains beckon, so grab your skis, pour yourself a cup of hot cocoa, and shred the proverbial gnar with the Skurfs!
NIGHTWITCH
Stoner-metal Nightwitch will be dropping heavy bombs like veteran anti-fascist pilots fighting Nazis when they shred searing twin-jet guitars, thunderous rhythms and piercing screams to the ZACC!
MARGI CATES & NICK BARR COVER THE MAGNETIC FIELDS
Margi Cates sings on her bike, in airports and on stages. Sometimes she sings wedding stuff, sometimes she sings soul songs, sometimes she sings country, sometimes she sings to children. She hopes to make you feel things, she’s been studying being a vessel of sound for like EVER. She writes songs too! This show she’ll be covering Steven Merrit of The Magnetic Fields. She will be joined by her good friend and guitarist Nick Barr. These songs cut to the quick, they are achingly tender then sardonic and witty. It’s been a pleasure working on them, and they can’t wait to share them with you.
CHEESEY TURTLES
Jack and Noah Morss, Paul Dennison, Finn Saxton all wanted to be in a band. Noah tried the bass, Finn tried guitar, Paul played piano, and Jack played drums. After a little while, Pauly, Noah, and Jack all got bored with their instruments and interested in other instruments … so the current lineup is Jack on lead guitar, Finn on rhythm guitar and vocals, Paul on bass, and Noah on drums.
Masks are required for attendees for all Show Room events at this time. Masks may be removed for beverage consumption, but we ask that they please be worn at any time when not actively drinking.

Join us every Saturday night and enjoy the finest cultiest flicks Missoula has to offer! Once a month we let you, the community, help decide what the next month’s line up will be.
When Ellen, the matriarch of the Graham family, passes away, her daughter’s family begins to unravel cryptic and increasingly terrifying secrets about their ancestry. The more they discover, the more they find themselves trying to outrun the sinister fate they seem to have inherited. Making his feature debut, writer-director Ari Aster unleashes a nightmare vision of a domestic breakdown that exhibits the craft and precision of a nascent auteur, transforming a familial tragedy into something ominous and deeply disquieting, and pushing the horror movie into chilling new terrain with its shattering portrait of heritage gone to hell.
