Labor Day Weekend PICKS: Thursday, September 1st thru Sunday, September 4th
Well, hello September! The MUG has compiled the most comprehensive list of events in Missoula and around Western Montana, all right here for you to make your own Labor Day Weekend PICKS.
Our ridiculous summer heat is hanging in there, so we recommending getting outside in the mornings and evenings, and seek out your indoor pursuits while it’s baking outside. We didn’t actually see much going on Monday for Labor Day proper – which makes it a good day to just relax from the ton of happenings to do from Thursday thru Sunday.
It’s First Friday in Downtown Missoula. We’re still in the middle of fair season, with festivals happening at the Ravalli County Fair, and also the Sanders County Fair. And – Germanfest at Caras Park on Sunday afternoon!
The fall semester is underway at UM, and the first home Griz Football game (vs. NW) is Saturday. The Clark Fork is starting to run a little low and slow, but the high temps still make a river float a very solid bet any day this weekend.
Farmers Markets season is in full swing in Western Montana. Huckleberries and Flathead cherries are current, and if you look for them – Dixon Melons! You’ll find ’em here, and for a complete list of nearly three dozen in the area, check out our comprehensive Western Montana Farmers Markets story on The MUG.
We’re counting over 75 music shows of one kind or another in the area. We’ve got options!
No matter what direction you wanna get outta town, you can’t go wrong. Activities and events are happening not only around Missoula, but all the way up the Flathead and the Bitterroot valleys, east to Phillipsburg and Anaconda, and out west past Alberton.
Get out and enjoy our locally-owned bars & restaurants with Montana grown / made food and beverages. Support our local farmers and crafts people. Go float! Catch a classic movie screening or a stand-up comedy night. Stretch that big brain at one of the local trivia nights. Sing your favorite karaoke song, or catch a live music show. Enjoy safely and responsibly.
Please confirm event details at the source before you go. Last minute changes are common, especially due to weather. With each event listing, we try to include a web page or event link with more information you can check for changes.

Laney Lou and the Bird Dogs are an energetic Americana band from Bozeman, Montana, that infuses four-part harmonies, engaging songwriting, and rock-n-roll drive into a modern approach to traditional folk music. Coming from varied musical backgrounds, the five-person ensemble creates a sound unique to them, but one that finds common ground by adding the energy of Montana’s big sky country into their music. The Bird Dogs weave stories through their songs that are reflective, joyous, longing, or meant to share a journey with the listener. Through it all, the band is able to convey heartfelt honesty, getting the audience to immerse themselves in the moment by dancing, singing and laughing along.

Izaak Opatz w/ The Pettifoggers and Chloé Little
Zootown Arts Community Center
216 W Main Street, Missoula, Montana
$10 // $15 Artist Supporter Ticket (kick the musicians extra $ if you want)
To purchase tickets visit: https://showroom.zootownarts.org/event/izaak-opatz-w-the-pettifoggers-and-chloé-little/
Like many of his favorite songwriters (John Hartford, Lucinda Williams, Jeff Tweedy), Izaak Opatz is an ungulate in life’s winter pasture, chewing on and metabolizing disappointment, heartbreak, and the other tough stuff into enjoyable musical carbohydrates. A compulsive metaphorager (and inveterate wordplayboy), Opatz breaks it all down with enzymes of wry humor, thoughtful simile and close observation – a therapeutic process of narrativizing his own life that, almost as a byproduct, turns out savory nuggets of literate, confessional pop.
The Pettifoggers are sticking it to the man. Part folk, part punk, with a dash of grunge, this super-group of poets and farmers puts the SEX in sextet. Led by singer-songwriter Daniela Garvue, “Foggies” tunes are impassioned examinations of the heart, the Earth, and cocaine. Although they’ve taken their sweet time in releasing their highly-anticipated debut album, “New World Warblers” (available later this summer), this band is not slowing down. Expect a show that toes the line between basement rager and post-harvest Americana jam session.
Chloé Little has lived in Montana for several years but hails from California. For close to 15 years, she has used songwriting as a form of mental release and creative expression. She uses the outdoors, love, soul-searching, and self-discovery as inspiration. Through her songs, she aspires to spark connection with the audience – or at least plant a seed of thought.
