SUMMARY:Torrents First Friday: REFORGE - Two Voices with Cameron and Quinton Decker at Confluence Center
DESCRIPTION:Torrents presents First Friday: REFORGE – Two Voices with Cameron and Quinton Decker at the Confluence Center in Downtown Missoula 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm Friday\, August 1\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Confluence Center (Western Montana’s Home for Nonprofit Events) art program Torrents is thrilled to present a magical evening of art and community! This month we proudly present a duo exhibit by brothers Cameron & Quinton Decker. \n\n\n\nCameron and Quinton Decker are both multidisciplinary artists keenly aware of the importance of history and ancestry.. Cameron’s art practice is guided by intuition\, memory\, and connection to place. His work with natural materials carries meaning\, memory\, and deep time of geological histories compressed into color. Whether working in painting\, drawing\, printmaking\, or public art\, Cameron’s hope is to honor those who have shaped him.Quinton’s work spans painting\, sculpture\, and photography exploring themes of identity\, perception and social mythology. This exhibit will feature two bodies of work in painting and photography\, the first which reframes dehumanizing mythical creatures in order to examine power of the colonial imagination; and in the other\, to examine humanity and the erosion of the American Dream. Together\, the work reflects on what it means to be seen—as human\, as monstrous\, or as something in between.Join us for the exhibit opening on First Friday\, August 1\, 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm\, which will include live music at 7:00 pm by Foreshadow\, plus free snacks and drinks. The exhibit will remain on display through August 29 and can be seen by appointment through the Center: 406-926-6526

DESCRIPTION:Bernice’s Bakery in Missoula hosts a First Friday Art Show by abstract photographer Judy Anne Johnson 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm Friday\, August 1\n\n\n\n\n\nPhotographer Judy Anne Johnson makes Missoula her home. In her upcoming solo exhibition\, she explores abstraction by photographing locations around Missoula. Her photographic approach is instinctual and her subjects diverse. Her photography is more about the how and why than the what\, about what grabs her emotions and captures her imagination. She photographs the land\, places\, decay\, history\, animals and people. She is drawn to the whimsy and humor in life which often makes its way into a photograph. \n\n\n\nShe has lived in Oregon\, Washington\, Indiana\, and New York state. She travels extensively\, most recently making several solo road trips to the American Southwest. She traveled across America in 2021 and 2023\, keeping to the small highways and byways. She has traveled to France\, Iran\, Jordan\, and Lebanon. And Phoenix. It was in Phoenix at a workshop this spring that she discovered the magic and freedom of abstract photography. \n\n\n\nMs. Johnson developed an interest in photography at an early age. She has studied photography at every opportunity over the years\, the technique and the art of it\, beginning with film. She drew early inspiration from her mother and from the black & amp; white masters of the 20th Century. Black & white photography remains her enduring love though she makes color images as well\, depending on the story she wants to tell. These days she takes her digital camera almost everywhere she goes. Photography “sharpens mypowers of observation and fills my world with a sense of wonder and well-being.”

Her music is a blend of distinctly homespun vocals\, acoustic simplicity\, yearning soulfulness\, and winsome storytelling. SUMMARY:Robbie Fulks at Longstaff House
DESCRIPTION:Bluegrass singer-songwriter Robbie Fulks performs live at 7:00 pm Friday\, August 1 at Missoula’s Longstaff House\n\n\n\n\n\nRobbie Fulks is a singer\, recording artist\, instrumentalist\, composer\, and songwriter. His current release\,  Bluegrass Vacation on Compass Records\, returns him to his bluegrass roots\, with alarge group of  masterful musicians including Sam Bush\, Jerry Douglas\, Justin Moses\, Ronnie McCoury\, Alison Brown\,  David Grier\, Tim O’Brien\, Todd Phillips\, John Cowan\, Brennen Leigh\, Randy Kohrs\, Sierra Hull\, Stuart Duncan\, Shad Cobb\, and Chris Eldridge. Across 11 new original songs (and one freewheeling interpretation of the Delmore Brothers)\, Robbie covers themes like small-town blues\, the endurance of  childhood memory\, inebriation\, love\, divorce\, the role of music in strengthening family bonds\, losing a loved one to Alzheimer’s\, and bluegrass itself. His most recent release\, 2017’s Upland Stories\, earned year’s-best recognition from NPR and Rolling Stone among many others\, as well as two Grammy® nominations\, for folk album and American roots song (“Alabama At Night”). \n\n\n\nFulks was born in York\, Pennsylvania\, and grew up in a half-dozen small towns in southeastPennsylvania\, the North Carolina Piedmont\, and the Blue Ridge area of Virginia. He learned guitar from his dad\, banjo from Earl Scruggs and John Hartford records. He attended Columbia College in New York CityIn 1983 he moved to Chicago and joined Greg Cahill’s Special Consensus Bluegrass Band. He taught music at Old Town School of Folk Music from 1984 to 1996\, and worked as a staff songwriter on Music Row in Nashville from 1993 to 1998.His early solo work — Country Love Songs (1996) and South Mouth (1997) — helped define the“alternative country” movement of the 1990s. For most of the present century\, Robbie has been playing acoustic music through microphones\, which lets him give more attention to his flatpicking and banjo playing\, and complements his more sepia-toned subject matter — the slings of time\, the troubles of common people. \n\n\n\nHis repertory of traveling players includes folks like Shad Cobb\, Missy Raines\, RobbieGjersoe\, Jenny Scheinman\, Matt Flinner\, Don Stiernberg\, and Jesse Cobb. However\, two non-acoustic recent side projects are his 2018 duo record with Linda Gail Lewis\, Wild! Wild! Wild!\, an NPR favorite which leans to rock-and-roll and classic country-and-western\, and his double-vinyl reinterpretation of the Bob Dylan record Street-Legal\, which is titled 16\, is musically unbounded and is no one’s favorite.Radio: multiple appearances on WSM’s “Grand Ole Opry”; PRI’s “Whadd’ya Know”; NPR’s “Fresh Air\,” “Mountain Stage\,” and “World Cafe”; and the syndicated “Acoustic Cafe” and “Laura Ingraham Show.” TV: PBS’s Austin City Limits; NBC’s Today\, Late Night with Conan O’Brien\, Later with Carson Daly\, and 30 Rock. From 2004 to 2008 he hosted an hourlong performance/interview program for XM satellite radio\,“Robbie’s Secret Country.” Artists who have covered his songs include Sam Bush\, Kelly Hogan\, Andrew Bird\, Mollie O’Brien\, Rosie Flores\, John Cowan\, and Old 97s.Robbie’s writing on music and life have appeared in GQ\, Blender\, the Chicago Reader\, DaCapoPress’s Best Music Writing anthologies for 2001 and 2004\, Amplified: Fiction from Leading Alt-Country\, Indie Rock\, Blues and Folk Musicians\, and A Guitar and A Pen: Stories by Country Music’s Greatest Songwriters. As an instrumentalist\, he has accompanied the Irish fiddle master Liz Carroll\, the distinguished jazz violinist Jenny Scheinman\, and the New Orleans pianist Dr. John. As a producer his credits include Touch My Heart: A Tribute to Johnny Paycheck (Sugar Hill\, 2004) and Big Thinkin’ by Dallas Wayne (Hightone\, 2000). Theatrical credits include “Woody Guthrie’s American Song” and Harry Chapin’s “Cottonpatch Gospel.” He served twice as judge for the Winfield National Flatpicking Guitar competition. He tours yearlong with various configurations.Besides country and bluegrass music\, Robbie is fiercely fond of Charles Mingus\, P.G. Wodehouse\, quantum mechanics\, his wife Donna\, comedy in almost all forms\, cooking\, swimming laps\, the past\, Arthur Schopenhauer\, Universal horror movies\, his grandson and even his sons\, coastal towns in the offseason\, and rye whiskey\, though in nothing like that order.
