SUMMARY:Bill Mize and Cruz Contreras at Longstaff House
DESCRIPTION:Two fabulous performers on the same bill – Bill Mize and Cruz Contreras perform live at 7:00 pm Tuesday\, August 5 at Missoula’s Longstaff House \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBill MizeGrammy-winning guitarist Bill Mize is a son of Tennessee\, and a fitting representative ofhis state’s rich musical heritage. His critically lauded fingerstyle compositions are fluidand intricate and their delivery masterful. One suspects an influential teacher; “I receivedmost of my musical education from a cheap Zenith radio\,” says Mize\, who as a childdrifted off to sleep to the decidedly non-sleepy lullabyes emanating from Nashville’sWLAC and WSM and Knoxville’s WNOX.Bill is a past winner of the Winfield National Fingerstyle Guitar Competition\, andreceived a GRAMMY Award for his collaboration with musician and storyteller DavidHolt on the recording Stellaluna. Popular acoustic guitar compilations “Windham HillGuitar Sampler” by Windham Hill Records and “Masters of the Acoustic Guitar” byNarada Records have included his works. Bill’s music has been featured in a number offilms and documentaries\, notably in Emmy-award winning Ken Burns productions“The National Parks: America’s Best Idea” and “Country Music.” ” Mel Bay Productions transcribed Mize’s second CD\, “Tender Explorations\,” into a songbook.Bill will be playing some tunes off his new cd “The Southwind” and will be joined byspecial guests\, Beth Bramhall and Beth Youngblood.www.billmize.com \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCruz ContrerasRaised between the rugged lines of Tennessee and the long shadows of Michigan\, Contreras has spent nearly thirty years forging his path through the Americana musical landscape. He’s a multi-instrumentalist\, songwriter\, bandleader\, producer\, and storyteller whose voice cuts through noise like a well-honed blade. \n\n\n\nHe got his start at just 15\, playing guitar behind his younger brother Billy Contreras at fiddle competitions—long before Billy became a world-renowned fiddler\, known for his work with George Jones\, Sierra Ferrell\, Ricky Skaggs. But it was a moment in 1993 that sealed Cruz’s fate: finding himself in a room with the Father of Bluegrass\, Bill Monroe. That room\, that sound\, that presence—it lit a fire that’s never gone out. \n\n\n\nFirst with Robinella and the CCstringband\, then as the fire at the heart of The Black Lillies\, Cruz helped carve a sound that feels as old as the hills and as wild as the road. His songs have topped the Billboard and Americana charts\, picked up Independent Music Awards\, and earned him a nomination from the Americana Music Association as an emerging artist — though his music suggests he was never chasing trends to begin with. \n\n\n\nHe’s stood on stages from Conan O’Brien’s late-night set to the Grand Ole Opry — the latter over 40 times — and drawn praise from Rolling Stone\, NPR\, American Songwriter\, and Vanity Fair. Contreras has toured with Robert Earl Keen and the Turnpike Troubadours\, collaborated with John Oates\, and shared stages with Old Crow Medicine Show\, The Travelin’ McCourys\, Tyler Childers\, Mavis Staples\, Elizabeth Cook and more. A festival veteran\, Cruz and The Black Lillies have performed at Bonnaroo\, Merle Fest\, Jazz Fest\, Red Ants Pants\, Stagecoach\, High Sierra\, DelFest\, Pickathon\, Mile Zero\, Cayamo\, to name a few. But he doesn’t play for headlines\, but for the quiet connection — the still moment in a crowded room when a lyric hits home like a memory you forgot you had. \n\n\n\nNow touring behind his debut solo album Cosmico\, Cruz is joined once more by a band of road-tested companions under the name Cruz Contreras and The Black Lillies. Together\, they bring with them a catalog of songs that stretch across time — from the familiar past to the hopeful unknown.

Married since 1999\, these two soulmates\, equally steeped in the musical roots of blues\, jazz\, and gospel\, had finally decided the time was right to set aside their successful solo careers and commit to a new band melding their vision and talent. It wasn’t the first time they had collaborated; they had shared a stage countless times and traded album guest appearances\, all while starting a family together. But on that night\, hitting the stage together with members of the Derek Trucks Band and a guest horn section they heard the future. \n\n\n\n“The 12-piece outfit puts out a big band sound that still rings intimate\, shaking listeners to their emotional core.” – Rolling Stone \n\n\n\nTwo years later\, the couple debuted Tedeschi Trucks Band. The nation’s economy was heading into recession. The popular music landscape was filled with technological theatrics and auto-tuned singers. And here were Tedeschi and Trucks along with their (then) 8-member band\, loading up two tour buses and hitting the road with a sound that defied conventional genre boundaries or traditional labels; a gypsy caravan on the rock-and-roll highway. To call it ambitious was an understatement. \n\n\n\n“They’re a roots-music tour de force\, and there’s a strong case to be made that they’ve been America’s best band of the decade.” – Austin American Statesman \n\n\n\nIn pursuit of their ideal sound driven by world class musicianship\, Tedeschi and Trucks put together a musical collaborative like no other\, flying in the face of any practical or economic considerations. There have been evolutionary changes to the band along the way\, but the current line up includes the freight-train force of drummers Tyler Greenwell and Isaac Eady\, long-time Derek Trucks Band member Mike Mattison\, with his dynamic vocals and songwriting skills\, Brandon Boone (bass guitar)\, Gabe Dixon (keyboards)\, the three-piece horn section of Kebbi Williams (saxophone)\, Ephraim Owens (trumpet)\, and Elizabeth Lea (trombone)\, and Mark Rivers and Alecia Chakour on vocal duties with Mattison. In February 2019\, original band member and brilliant multi-instrumentalist Kofi Burbridge passed away\, leaving an indelible mark on TTB’s spirit and sound. \n\n\n\nOn the road for upwards of 200 days a year\, the TTB family has grown strong\, bonding over backyard BBQs and long bus rides\, all the while developing a growing repertoire of original material and paying homage to an extensive canon of influences ranging from Sly & the Family Stone\, Miles Davis and George Jones to Joe Cocker\, Nina Simone\, and even Indian sarod master Ali Akbar Khan. Embracing improvisation over convention\, and with set lists that change nightly\, the collective is adept at exploring almost any musical territory. The genuine respect within its ranks is evident on stage. Trucks’ masterful guitar skills and Tedeschi’s soaring vocals and bluesy guitar shine but don’t overpower the breadth of talent\, happily yielding the spotlight as needed in service of what the song deserves. \n\n\n\n“I saw them live and it was mind blowing. [Derek] has taken the guitar\, specifically slide guitar\, somewhere it has never been. His phrasing both with and without slide is uniquely his and just odd and jarring and exciting to listen to. [Susan] is an earnest blues player as well and her voice is astounding. The band was mind-blowing. They take a form that is arguably tired and turn it inside out with originality and musicianship and make it totally their own.” – Marc Maron \n\n\n\nTrucks and Tedeschi’s uncompromising vision has paid off. Now 12-members strong\, and with a catalog of seven albums and nearly a decade of steady touring in the U.S. and abroad\, Tedeschi Trucks Band carries a distinguished reputation earned from both audiences and critics as one of the premier live bands in the world. Sold-out multi-night runs at venerable venues like the Beacon Theatre\, Ryman Auditorium and Red Rocks Amphitheater are a testament to the can’t-miss concert experience fans have come to anticipate. The band’s own “Wheels of Soul” tour has become a sought-after summer experience across the country\, bringing TTB’s unique stew of upbeat rock and soul together on stage with a slew of guests\, sit ins\, and supporting bands that have included the late Sharon Jones\, Los Lobos  The Wood Brothers\, Hot Tuna and most recently Blackberry Smoke\, The Marcus King Band and Drive-By Truckers. \n\n\n\n“Epic is an overused word\, but if one contemporary rock band were to rightfully wear it\, the Tedeschi Trucks Band might be the ones.” – Santa Barbara Independent \n\n\n\nTTB’s most recent release\, Layla Revisited (Live At LOCKN’) featuring Trey Anastasio\, is a 2CD/3LP live recording of their “now-legendary” (Relix) performance of the classic Derek and the Dominos album. It  joins an impressive and growing discography that includes Signs (2019)\, Let Me Get By (2016)\, Made Up Mind (2013)\, and the Grammy-winning debut\, Revelator (2011) in addition to their earlier live releases\, the Grammy-nominated film/audio\, Live From The Fox Oakland (2017)\, and 2012’s Everybody’s Talkin’. \n\n\n\nIn the midst of the rare time off during the pandemic\, the band convened in the studio to write and record a wealth of new songs for a future studio album. As the recording progresses towards an expected release in 2022\, the album is growing into a unique and exciting conceptual project.  It’s clear that Trucks and Tedeschi have no intention of slowing down. As Trucks remarked to Mark Maron on his WTF podcast “I haven’t found this band’s ceiling yet.” For Tedeschi Trucks Band\, there may not be one.

SUMMARY:flipturn - The Burnout Days Tour with Sun Room at The Wilma
DESCRIPTION:Logjam Presents welcomes flipturn for a live concert performance with Sun Room at The Wilma in Downtown Missoula at 8:00 pm Wednesday\, August 6\n\n\n\n\n\nDoors @ 7:00 pm \n\n\n\nLogjam Presents welcomes flipturn for a live concert performance with Sun Room at The Wilma in Downtown Missoula at 8:00 pm Wednesday\, August 6. \n\n\n\nTickets on sale at Logjam Presents Box Offices and online while supplies last. All tickets are general admission standing room only. All ages are welcome. \n\n\n\nTake a look at these tips to best prepare yourself for a smooth ticket buying experience. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout flipturnFor flipturn\, success didn’t arrive overnight. The band\, comprised of Dillon Basse (lead vocals\, guitar)\, Tristan Duncan (lead guitar)\, Mitch Fountain (synth\, guitar)\, Madeline Jarman (bass)\, and Devon VonBalson (drums)\, grew steadily with every gig\, from college house shows in their home state of Florida to festival appearances at Bonnaroo\, Lollapalooza\, and Austin City Limits\, to national recognition from Jimmy Kimmel Live\, ABC News\, and The Washington Post – earning the Jacksonville-based band an international reputation as an indie rock powerhouse. By the time flipturn released their debut album\, Shadowglow\, they’d become genuine road warriors while still in their mid-20s\, supporting the record with a nonstop string of tour dates. That dizzying experience inspired the band’s second release\, Burnout Days. Caught halfway between 21st century indie rock\, New Wave-inspired nostalgia\, and rhythmic alt-pop\, Burnout Days finds the beauty that exists between five friends\, even in times of burnout. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Sun RoomBorn and raised in SoCal’s surf-rock scene\, Sun Room (Luke Asgian\, Ashton Minnich and Max Pinamonti) quickly went from getting the cops called on them for playing too loudly at house shows to performing their music in sold out rooms across dozens of countries. \n\n\n\nAfter a series of unexpected viral moments\, two of their songs were included on the hit Netflix series ‘Outer Banks’ which continued the wave of excitement online. Within just six months of the band forming\, Sun Room went on to sell out a run of shows across the US\, support Louis Tomlinson’s North and South American tours\, and support Inhaler in Europe. \n\n\n\nMaking their way back to the US in Fall 2022\, Sun Room embarked on their first headline tour across North America\, selling over 13\,000 tickets. Getting back on the road in Spring 2023\, the band toured the US with Inhaler\, then went straight into their own headline run. \n\n\n\nAfter returning home to San Diego for the summer\, Sun Room finished their EP At Least I Tried — A 4 track EP produced by Zac Carper from FIDLAR\, one of the band’s biggest influences growing up in the California DIY scene. The project was met with great responses from the public\, scoring playlist covers across DSPs\, a highlight from Iggy Pop on BBC6 and DIY Mag describing them as “a band so unashamedly indebted to the garage rock’n’ roll of decades past…” The project dropped as the band kicked off their second headline tour across all of North America\, playing in over 30 cities\, before finally jetting off to Australia for a headline tour and series of festivals from December 2023 to January 2024. \n\n\n\nComing off a headline run and festival circuit in Spring 2024\, Sun Room has most recently released their EP Can’t Explain following the singles “Hate It When You Call” and “Get Me Outta New York City.” The EP arrives just before the band is set to join Dayglow on his fall headline tour for 20+ dates across the US. \n\n\n\nIn 2023\, Sun Room gained over 500k followers across social media with a steady flow of global listeners that continue to grow as they experiment with their sound\, play in new cities\, and pull influences from the unique experiences they have encountered in just three years of being a band.

Produced by 3x GRAMMY® Award-winner Brendan O’Brien (Bruce Springsteen\, Pearl Jam)\, the album is heralded by the ravishing lead single\, “Time Waited\,” available everywhere now. An official music video\, directed by famed photographer/filmmaker Danny Clinch and featuring new performance footage interspersed with archival photos from throughout the band’s history\, is streaming now on YouTube. \n\n\n\nFor more than 25 years\, My Morning Jacket have achieved an incredibly rare feat in the world of rock ‘n’ roll – upholding a long-established cultural legacy while sustaining all the curiosity and creative hunger of their very earliest days. In a monumental step for the Louisville\, KY-bred five-piece – vocalist/guitarist Jim James\, bassist Tom Blankenship\, guitarist Carl Broemel\, drummer Patrick Hallahan\, keyboardist Bo Koster – is once again expands the limits of their sound and elevates their artistry to unprecedented heights. The result is perhaps the most masterfully realized work yet from a band fully committed to their belief in music as a conduit for revelation of all kinds. \n\n\n\n“I like how the word “is” indicates a sense of presence in the now – there’s no logic or rationale behind this record; it just is\,” says James. “All these songs came into existence out of an attempt to connect with something beyond the human experiment\, which for me is the whole purpose of music – that connection with something larger than us\, yet something we are all equally a part of.” \n\n\n\nis – which arrives as My Morning Jacket celebrates the 20th anniversary of their 2005’s landmark Z\, a lavishly acclaimed collection named by Rolling Stone among “The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time” – represents another milestone in the band’s ever-evolving body of work\, as well as an opportunity to breathe new energy into their historically stunning and hard-driving live performances. James points to the “undeniable force of loving” as the most essential factor in the band’s longevity and unending enchantment with the process of musical creation. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout MELTMelt is a New York City based band who formed in 2017. With a sound that continuously pulls from new realms\, at Melt’s core is a shared love of soul and psychedelia\, existential pop songs and ethereal jam sections\, and a deep love for each other. Melt initially made a name for themselves with their first single “Sour Candy” that reached #5 on Billboard’s US Viral 50 Chart when they were 18 years old. They have since released their first EP “West Side Highway” in 2021: a bold project inspired by an eclectic mix of artists from Diana Ross to Wilco\, The Grateful Dead to Maggie Rogers. As Melt continues to grow and reach new heights\, they want you to help them create love\, build community\, and work towards an ever-evolving vision of the future. This time ultimately traces a trajectory of self-realization\, acceptance\, and accountability. Kitchen Dwellers embark on a similar odyssey over the course of their fourth full-length offering\, Seven Devils. The Montana quartet—Shawn Swain [Mandolin]\, Torrin Daniels [Banjo]\, Joe Funk [Upright Bass]\, and Max Davies [Acoustic Guitar]—thread together an immersive and inimitable conceptual arc inspired by Dante’s Inferno and set to a soundtrack of folk-infused bluegrass spiked with psychedelic vision and rock energy. \n\n\n\nContinuing their own journey as brothers\, they deliver their most ambitious and anthemic body of work yet. \n\n\n\n“These tunes deal with the human experience\, and Torrin initially drew a parallel between the music and Dante\,” Max states. “We explored the connection by correlating each song with a sin. Some of these connections are only apparent if you dive deep into the lyrics. Our goal is to essentially take the listener through our own interpretation of the Inferno story.” \n\n\n\n“We didn’t go into the studio with the intent of making a concept album\,” recalls Torrin. “I was driving around listening to everything\, and I noticed these parallels. To dive deeper\, we’re discussing topics like mental health\, the human condition\, and what we go through on the road. In life and music\, everything is recurring and universal. I was reading Dante at the time\, and it naturally fit.” \n\n\n\nIt proved to be a logical next step as well… \n\n\n\nThus far\, Kitchen Dwellers have engaged and enraptured listeners with albums such as Ghost In The Bottle [2017]\, Muir Maid [2019]\, Live from the Wilma [2021]\, and Wise River [2022]. Of the latter\, Holler. praised how “Kitchen Dwellers have preserved their sense of youthful experimentation\,” and Relix proclaimed\, “The songs on the new record build on this range\, while also reflecting on the group’s Bozeman\, Montana home.” Between tallying millions of streams\, the band ignited hallowed venues such as Red Rocks Amphitheatre and graced the bills of Telluride Bluegrass\, Northwest String Summit\, WinterWonderGrass\, and beyond. \n\n\n\nIn order to bring Seven Devils to life\, the musicians opted to work with producer Glenn Brown. It would not only mark their first time collaborating with the producer\, but it also would be the first time they decamped to Michigan in order to record. \n\n\n\n“The studio itself definitely impacted the vibe\,” Torrin notes. “It’s a tiny workspace\, but it’s full of old recording equipment with legendary stories attached to it. For almost the entire time\, we were forced to congregate in this room together. The process was ever-evolving\, because ideas kept flowing.” \n\n\n\nFittingly\, “Seven Devils (Limbo)” opens the album and serves as the first single. Nimbly picked banjo and upbeat acoustic guitar set the pace as the regretful chorus bemoans\, “Am I supposed to hop the next train? Or stand here drowning in the Oregon rain?” A guitar-driven bridge dips in and out of effects-laden echoes and stark strumming. Coming full circle\, a ten-minute version of “Seven Devils” later bookends the record with an epic finale. \n\n\n\n“I incorporated some elements of grunge in terms of the chords\, which are a little dissonant\,” Torrin elaborates. “Thematically\, it’s the descent into Hell. First\, Dante goes through limbo before reaching any of the circles where the cardinal sins are addressed. ‘Seven Devils’  evokes the feeling of being in limbo.” \n\n\n\n“It also signifies you’re embarking on some type of journey\,” Max agrees. “By the end of the LP\, you know the protagonist isn’t going to be the same person.” \n\n\n\nThen\, there’s “The Crow and The Raven (III).” The track’s emotionally charged vocals seesaw on top of strings in a moment of terse reflection. “I went through a horrible breakup in 2018 when I wrote the first version\,” Shawn remembers. “‘The Crow and The Raven (III)’ sat in my notebook for a half-decade before we revamped it. Now\, it’s a sad\, slower lament about enduring the loss of a relationship.” \n\n\n\n“Pendulum” rushes towards a mournful refrain offset by a plucky crescendo. “It’s about dealing with an addiction in your life and how it affects relationships\,” Joe says. “People often trade one addiction for another\, whether positive or detrimental to their life\, as a means to satisfy their baseline addictive tendencies.” \n\n\n\nOn the other end of the spectrum\, “Here We Go (VI)” laments the epidemic of shootings in America with unfiltered frustration projected through a powerful ebb and flow punctuated by a cameo from Lindsay Lou. \n\n\n\n“I was riding a Greyhound from Seattle to Missoula in 2012\,” Max goes on. “There had just been another school shooting. It’s terrible to think of how many shootings have happened since. Why is this happening? The chorus shifts gears to miscommunication between two parties in a relationship. Those are the two driving forces.” \n\n\n\nAn electric guitar lead heralds the onset of “Unwind (Paradiso)\,” building towards one climactic moment of catharsis. \n\n\n\n“A psychedelic experience and life-changing ego death changed my outlook on many things\,” Torrin admits. “‘Unwind (Paradiso)’ was one of those moments where you surrender and let it take you. You’re letting go of the human things in your brain that make you want to fight or cause you to be afraid. It also came together in the studio as a band\, which was super cool.” \n\n\n\nIn the end\, Kitchen Dwellers may just leave you changed with Seven Devils. \n\n\n\n“The record is a trip inward within the self\,” Torrin concludes. “It tackles a lot of things in the world people try not to think about. The reality is we’re only truly happy when happiness comes from within. That’s the message.” \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout The Infamous StringdustersThe Infamous Stringdusters rise to new heights on their ninth full-length record Rise Sun. For the album\, the GRAMMY® Award-winning quintet—Andy Falco [guitar]\, Chris Pandolfi [banjo]\, Andy Hall [dobro]\, Jeremy Garrett [fiddle]\, and Travis Book [double bass]—expanded their signature sound by perfecting their seamless fusion of All-American-bluegrass and rock. \n\n\n\nOnce again sail into uncharted territory moored only by their expressive patchwork of All-American bluegrass threaded together with strands of rock\, jazz\, funk\, country\, old-time\, and more. \n\n\n\nAs they approached this latest body of work\, the group’s ambition matched their outsized creative curiosity. \n\n\n\n“Rise Sun was sparked by the feeling of wanting something better for the world—more love\, more awareness\, and more compassion\,” says Hall. “It’s a message of taking care of each other\, our planet\, and ourselves. We all shared this feeling as evidenced by the songs we brought to the project. It’s the feeling of a rising sun as opposed to a dark night. Sometimes a message of hope is less popular than one of despair\, but it’s much-needed nevertheless.” \n\n\n\nIn the end\, that’s precisely what The Infamous Stringdusters do on Rise Sun as they boldly welcome yet another new day\, new phase\, and new chapter. \n\n\n\n“We’re a brotherhood\, but that family extends beyond the band even\,” Falco leaves off. “Our music gives us an opportunity to bring some light in a world that can be dark sometimes.” \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Leftover SalmonFew bands stick around for thirty years. Even fewer bands leave a legacy during that time that marks them as a truly special\, once-in-lifetime type band. And no band has done all that and had as much fun as Leftover Salmon. \n\n\n\nSince their earliest days as a forward thinking\, progressive bluegrass band who had the guts to add drums to the mix and who was unafraid to stir in any number of highly combustible styles into their ever evolving sound\, to their role as a pioneer of the modern jamband scene\, to their current status as elder-statesmen of the scene who cast a huge influential shadow over every festival they play\, Leftover Salmon has been a crucial link in keeping alive the traditional music of the past while at the same time pushing that sound forward with their own weirdly\, unique style. \n\n\n\nThe band now features a lineup that has been together longer than any other in Salmon history and is one of the strongest the legendary band has ever assembled. Built around the core of founding members Drew Emmitt and Vince Herman\, the band is now powered by banjo-wiz Andy Thorn\, and driven by the steady rhythm section of bassist Greg Garrison\, drummer Alwyn Robinson\, and dobro player & keyboardist Jay Starling. \n\n\n\nThe current lineup is continuing the long\, storied history of Salmon which found them first emerging from the progressive bluegrass world and coming of age as one the original jam bands\, before rising to become architects of what has become known as Jamgrass and helping to create a landscape where bands schooled in the traditional rules of bluegrass can break free of those bonds through nontraditional instrumentation and an innate ability to push songs in new psychedelic directions live. \n\n\n\nSalmon is a band who for more than thirty years has never stood still; they are constantly changing\, evolving\, and inspiring. If someone wanted to understand what Americana music is they could do no better than to go to a Leftover Salmon show\, where they effortlessly glide from a bluegrass number born on the front porch\, to the down-and-dirty Cajun swamps with a stop on Bourbon Street in New Orleans\, to the hallowed halls of the Ryman in Nashville\, before firing one up in the mountains of Colorado.

Now boasting over 2 billion global streams across platforms\, the band first began building their devoted fanbase with independent albums SEVEN + MARY(2013) and RKS (2015). In May 2024\, Rainbow Kitten Surprise released their first album in six years\, LOVE HATE MUSIC BOX. Produced by Daniel Tashian (Kacey Musgraves) along with Konrad Snyder (Noah Kahan) and lead singer Ela Melo\, the record is the band’s most vulnerable project yet\, and has been met with critical praise from Billboard\, Consequence\, Paste\, and more. LOVE HATE MUSIC BOX follows the band’s breakout full-length debut for Elektra\, HOW TO: FRIEND\, LOVE\, FREEFALL\, which arrived in April 2018. Produced by GRAMMY® Award-winner Jay Joyce (Cage The Elephant\, Lainey Wilson)\, the album featured RIAA-certified Platinum single “It’s Called: Freefall\,” earned widespread praise from Billboard\, TIME\, Vice\, and NPR\, and saw the band make several national television appearances\, including performances on “CBS Saturday Morning\,” “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert\,” and PBS’s “Austin City Limits.” After gracing the bills of Bonnaroo\, Lollapalooza\, and Osheaga\, to name a few\, RKS moved 80\,000 tickets of their own on the sold-out 2018/2019 Friend\, Love\, Freefall Tour. \n\n\n\nFollowing a sold-out run of underplay shows in May\, Rainbow Kitten Surprise returned to the road this fall for the LOVE HATE MUSIC BOX Tour\, which notably marked their largest tour to date. The 35-show run included multiple arena headline dates\, a stop at Radio City Music Hall in New York\, and two nights at the iconic Hollywood Palladium in Los Angeles. \n\n\n\nRainbow Kitten Surprise is: Ela Melo (lead vocals)\, Darrick “Bozzy” Keller (guitar\, vocals)\, Ethan Goodpaster (lead guitar\, vocals)\, Jess Haney (drums). \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Medium Build \n\n\n\nAs a musician with a nomadic lifestyle\, Nick Carpenter often enters spaces as a stranger and leaves with lifelong friends. The creator of Medium Build possesses a connective charisma that shows in his songs and performances—which can seem like equal parts concerts\, testimony\, and stand-up comedy. That gift and yearning for connection has been amplified during a transformative season for Nick. In 2023\, Medium Build signed with slowplay / Island Records\, toured with Lewis Capaldi\, and reached the Billboard charts for the first time collaborating with X Ambassadors. Life was pulling Carpenter away from his home\, dog\, and sense of belonging in Anchorage to Nashville. Nick spent his drives looking\, listening\, and reflecting. This inner and outer journey led to Country\, the thematic album draws from Carpenter’s roots as much as it considers his future—while exploring genre. His music is as vast and unique as his backstory\, but “if you slow all of my songs down\, they’re just three-cord bummer Country tunes\,” he admits. Evident in the video single “Cutting Thru The Country\,” this collection packs for a trip that explores wide open spaces\, musical frontiers\, and oneself.Medium Build began as the name Nick Carpenter attached to four-track recordings a decade ago. The storyteller applied aspects of a middle-class church-going Georgia childhood and a Tennessee education to truths learned along the way—ultimately delivering the queer extrovert to find a community in Alaska. There is duality and dichotomy in Medium Build’s life and music—but it is drenched in authenticity. The music has endured\, resonated\, and connected with a growing base. “Now I’m realizing that my career can last longer than five seconds and I can kind of just breathe and show one thing at a time\,” Nick shares. His dynamic catalog mirrors the people who have shown up in his corner: Elton John\, Boygenius\, John Mayer\, and Noah Kahan\, to name a few. 2019’s somber and synth-tinged “Be Your Boy” and 2022’s therapeutic “Never Learned To Dance” are fan favorites amid the kaleidoscope of sounds and moods. Country seems much more focused\, even if birthed by uncertainty. Now in his thirties\, Nick says he only recently learned about his father’s poor rural South Carolina upbringing. As a result\, Country music was something Nick’s dad covered up—along with the poverty and corresponding shame of his past. “I had no sense of identity as far as place\,” the artist admits. Lately\, the father and son began talking about the past and sharing Country tunes—exchanging culture and heritage. As an understanding of his DNA developed\, perhaps the twang and American in Medium Build’s songs stood out. However\, his Country is something unsurprisingly personal. “It feels self-soothing\,” Nick says of the opener\, “Beach Chair\,” which is a love letter to self in a time of need. “Crying Over U” is deeply specific but conjures emotions in us all—when confronted by closure and what remains in the rearview.Written on the road\, Country was fittingly recorded on Nashville’s Music Row. Carpenter and creative partner Jake LiBassi\, aka Laiko\, embraced experimentation. “We made the album we wanted to make\,” he says joyfully and confidently. “It’s so easy to get back in touch with yourself if you can throw off the heavy cloak of duty and just do something that feels good.” At a time when people take the same photo a dozen times in search of a curated aesthetic\, Medium Build captures the snapshot. The lyrics and the spirit of Country embrace both wandering and wondering. “I want this to feel lived-in\,” Nick says. “It’s sort of me finding a defined place.”

SUMMARY:Scrapetown Bluegrass Band at Longstaff House
DESCRIPTION:Scrapetown\, the latest bluegrass group assembled by brothers John and Billy Parker\, performs live at Missoula’s Longstaff House at 7:00 pm Thursday\, August 14\n\n\n\n\n\nScrapetown is the latest band project for brothers John and Billy Parker. \n\n\n\nScrapetown scraped this all-star crew together for some shows this summer.  The band includes Billy on mandolin\, John on upright bass\, Tyler James on the 5-string\, Peter McLaughlin on guitar\, and Isaac Callender on fiddle.  We will do some originals written by Peter\, Isaac\, and Billy\, some bluegrass standards\, and some more obscure songs\, usually on the theme of the land and the people who work it.  We are also hoping to have an original tune about the Wyoming State BBQ Championship and Bluegrass Festival! \n\n\n\nThe band has a couple hundred years of experience (but don’t hold it against them) and they’re looking forward to playing with old friends in a new arrangement.

Boys & Girls earned the band multiple GRAMMY nominations and was hailed as one of the year’s best albums by numerous publications\, including Rolling Stone\, which also named lead single “Hold On” the #1 Best Song of 2012. Soon after its release\, the bandmates found themselves thrust into the global spotlight\, achieving such milestones as performing at the White House and on “Saturday Night Live.” \n\n\n\nThe band’s legacy continued to grow with the groundbreaking Sound & Color (ATO Records). Released 10 years ago\, the album debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200\, won GRAMMY Awards for Best Alternative Music Album and Best Engineered Album\, Non Classical. The first single\, “Don’t Wanna Fight\,” took honors in the Best Rock Performance and Best Rock Song categories. Sound & Color marked a profound evolution from Alabama Shakes’ debut album\, as The New York Times Magazine observed\, heralding the band’s “soul-stirring\, shape-shifting new sound.” Both Sound & Color and Boys & Girls were certified Platinum by the RIAA. \n\n\n\nThe Shakes’ Cockrell\, Fogg\, & Howard have also reunited in the studio promising new music to fans who have been eagerly awaiting their return. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Y La BambaTo declare one thematic narrative from Lucha\, Y La Bamba’s seventh album\, would be to chisel away a story within a story within a story into the illusion of something singular. \n\n\n\n“Lucha is a symbol of how hard it is for me to tackle healing\, live life\, and be present\,” Luz Elena Mendoza Ramos\, lead vocalist and producer of Y La Bamba\, says of the title behind the album which translates from Spanish to English as ‘fight’ and is also a nickname for Luz\, which means light. The album explores multiplicity—love\, queerness\, Mexican American and Chicanx identity\, family\, intimacy\, yearning\, loneliness—and chronicles a period of struggle and growth for Mendoza Ramos as a person and artist. \n\n\n\nLucha was born out of isolation at the advent of COVID-19 lockdowns\, beginning with a cover of Hank Williams’ “I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry\,” and following Mendoza Ramos as she moved from Portland\, Oregon to Mexico City\, returning to her parents’ home country while revisiting a lineage marred by violence and silence\, and simultaneously reaching towards deeper relationships with loved ones and herself. The album reflects “another tier of facing vulnerability\,” as Mendoza Ramos explains\, and is a battle cry to fight in order to be seen and to be accepted\, if not celebrated\, in every form—anger and compassion\, externally and internally\, individually and societally. As much as la lucha is about inner work\, fighting is borne from survival stemming from social structures designed to uplift dominant groups at the hands of suffering amongst the marginalized. \n\n\n\nWhile peeling back layers of the past to better understand the present has been integral to this period of growth for Mendoza Ramos\, time\, trauma\, and history can feel like interconnected\, abysmal loops and music has remained a trusted space for Mendoza Ramos to process\, experiment\, and channel her learnings into a creative practice. In this way\, Lucha has become cyclical\, documenting the parallel trust Mendoza Ramos has built with herself to allow the songs to guide how they should be sung\, or even sound. \n\n\n\n“I’ve been wanting to let whatever feels natural—with rhythm and musical instruments like congas and singing—to just let it be\, in the way that I’m trying to invoke in myself.” Lucha reflects on\, “the continuing process of learning how to exercise my producing skills\,” explains Mendoza Ramos. “I have so many words\, ideas to work with all the time\, and the hardest part for me has been learning to trust my gut. And figuring out how I work best\, and with who.” \n\n\n\nThe result is a collection as sonically sprawling and bold as its subject matter. On “La Lluvia de Guadalajara\,” Y La Bamba leans into a minimal\, avant-garde soundscape as Mendoza Ramos recites a spoken word poem. Later\, rhythms veer into bossa nova territory on “Hues ft. Devendra Banhart\,” a full-circle collaboration for Mendoza Ramos as she reminisces on the significance of finding Banhart’s work nearly two decades earlier: “He was the first young Spanish-speaking musician that wasn’t playing traditional Mexican music I heard when I was 21. There was nothing like it around that time.” \n\n\n\n“Nunca” is a warm\, wind-rich track dedicated to her mother\, Maria Elena Ramos whose poetry is published alongside the Lucha lyrics booklet. “I decided to put my mom’s poem\, which is a poem that she wrote to me\, letting me know how she felt\, exploring her heart in new ways she’s never imagined. Sharing it on the record is me paying attention that she’s expressing herself.” \n\n\n\nWhile each song holds personal significance to Mendoza Ramos\, part of growing into her identity as an artist has been allowing space for protection and boundaries\, and choosing to withhold some of that meaning from the public. Lucha is her own story of the complexity of trauma and nonlinear healing and growth processes\, but she imagines it is also the continuation of her ancestors’ stories and might also be a mirror to the story of others. “Even though I’m trying to fight\, I never want to demonize suffering\, because that’s part of growing. And it’s hard\, because we’re living in times where that [stigma] is what’s happening. So if this—me talking about my mental health and finding healing in my queerness—is a risk\, I hope that I find a community that protects it and protects me\, because they know I have their back. I am also trying to be my mom’s community.”

His songs like the No. 1 PLATINUM hit “There Was This Girl\,” the 3X-PLATINUM-certified heart-tugger “I Wish Grandpas Never Died” (which he performed live at the 55th ACM Awards)\, and his chart-topping collab with Thomas Rhett\, “Half of Me\,” have made Riley synonymous with what Country music does best: making listeners feel something with his no-gimmick\, relatable writing and classic feel. \n\n\n\nAn avid sports fan\, former athlete (Jacksonville State University quarterback) and outdoorsman\, Riley is riding a wave of success after being named the Academy of Country Music’s 2020 New Male Artist of the Year\, a former MusicRow Breakout Artist of the Year\, a CMT “Listen Up Artist\,” and one of CRS’s 2020 New Faces. In 2023 Green served as direct support for Morgan Wallen and Luke Combs\, playing to an average of 65\,000 fans each night. Recently Green has wrapped his own headlining Ain’t My Last Rodeo tour\, bringing out Tracy Lawrence and Ella Langley with him. Combs joined Riley on his third No. 1 single “Different ‘Round Here (Ft. Luke Combs)\,” the title track to Riley’s 2019 debut album that he re-recorded with Combs after seeing how fans connected to it. \n\n\n\nHis forthcoming third studio album\, produced by Dann Huff\, will arrive on his birthday\, October 18 with more of the signature Riley Green fans have come to know and love from the good ol’ boy who still lives in his hometown of Jacksonville\, AL. Currently on an incredible hot streak\, Green’s well-earned confidence in his work shines through across the 18-track set with five of the tracks being solely written including standouts “Jesus Saves\,” “Worst Way” and the title track—which finds Green reuniting with his “you look like you love me” duet partner and recent tourmate Ella Langley. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Mike RyanMike Ryan is a San Antonio\, TX born singer/songwriter who has accumulated fans across the US and throughout the world with powerful\, whiskey smooth vocals and well-crafted lyrics. Additionally\, Mike has received national radio airplay from three different singles on Sirius/XM radio. In 2017\, Brad Paisley cut a song titled “Last Time for Everything” co-written by Ryan. SUMMARY:Jason Scott & The High Heat with Kyle Hunter at Zootown Arts Community Center
DESCRIPTION:Jason Scott & The High Heat play live with Kyle Hunter at Zootown Arts Community Center in Downtown Missoula at 7:30 pm Thursday\, August 28\n\n\n\n\n\nDoors @ 7:00 pm \n\n\n\nCaught halfway between amplified Americana and heartland roots-rock\, Jason Scott & the High Heat create a sweeping\, dynamic sound that reaches far beyond the traditions of their Oklahoma City home. Too loud for folk music and too textured for Red Dirt\, this is the sound of a genuine band rooted in groove\, grit\, and its own singular spirit\, led by a songwriter whose unique past — a Pentecostal upbringing\, years logged as a preacher-in-training\, and an eventual crisis of faith — has instilled both a storyteller’s delivery and an unique perspective about life\, love\, and listlessness in the modern world. Case in point\, in 2018 Scott earned critical acclaim as a songwriter when the second track “She Good To Me” off his DIY EP Living Rooms (2017 landed on NPR World Cafe’s Heavy Rotation: 10 Songs Public Radio Can’t Stop Playing alongside songs by MGMT\, Moby\, and Jade Bird. It was only the beginning of a new life on a new kind of stage.A multi-instrumentalist\, producer\, engineer\, and session musician\, Scott spent a year balancing life on the road and life in the studio\, where he produced albums for Americana artists like Carter Sampson\, Ken Pomeroy\, and Nellie Clay. Things began to expand as he assembled the High Heat\, a band of multi-faceted musicians and roots-rock Renaissance men who\, like their frontman\, juggled multiple artistic pursuits. Together\, Jason Scott & the High Heat have since become a self-contained creative collective whose talents include songwriting\, music production\, photography\, video direction\, and more. \n\n\n\nA multi-instrumentalist\, producer\, engineer\, and session musician\, Scott spent a year balancing life on the road and life in the studio\, where he produced albums for Americana artists like Carter Sampson\, Ken Pomeroy\, and Nellie Clay. Blending the raw\, untamed spirit of the West with heartfelt lyrics and rich harmonies. His music captures the essence of life in the mountains and out on the road.  \n\n\n\nInfluenced by the likes of Marty Robbins\, Patsy Cline\, & The Allman Brothers\, Kyle Hunter & his band bring a fresh\, contemporary edge to traditional country sounds. Their live performances are a stirring mix of foot-stomping energy and soulful ballads\, making them a must-see act for fans of roots music. As they continue to gain traction\, Kyle Hunter & The Mountain Standard are quickly becoming a band to watch in the Americana world.

But these conventional measurements fall short when you’re assessing the impact of The Beach Boys. This band has birthed a torrent of hit singles and sold albums by the tens of millions. But its greater significance lies in the fact that The Beach Boys’ songs have forever changed the musical landscape\, profoundly influencing countless performing artists to follow. \n\n\n\nAt the helm of The Beach Boys is lead Singer & Critically acclaimed lyricist\,  Mike Love\, a founding member whose leadership has steered the band through decades of musical evolution. Grammy-winning songwriter Bruce Johnston joined The Beach Boys in 1965\, replacing Glenn Campbell\, who filled-in for Brian Wilson\, on vocals/bass\, when he retired from touring. Highly regarded in his field\, Johnston brought with him a wealth of experience from working with icons like Elton John and Pink Floyd\, The Byrds\, cementing his place among rock’s elite. \n\n\n\nThe current lineup\, including musical director Brian Eichenberger\, Christian Love\, Tim Bonhomme\, Jon Bolton\, Keith Hubacher\, Randy Leago\, and John Wedemeyer\, continues to honor and expand upon the band’s iconic Live performance legacy. This dedication is evident in their rigorous touring schedule\, with the band performing an average of 150 shows a year across a variety of venues worldwide. \n\n\n\nIn 2012\, The Beach Boys marked their 50th anniversary with a reunion tour and the release of “That’s Why God Made the Radio\,” which debuted at #3 on the Billboard charts\, their highest chart position in 37 years. This resurgence of interest highlighted the band’s continued relevance and their ability to resonate with both long-time fans and new listeners alike. \n\n\n\nTheir discography includes milestones like the triple platinum-certified Sounds of Summer and “The Warmth of the Sun\, which have contributed to a renewed interest in their music. Despite having numerous opportunities to retire at the height of their success\, such as after the release of the groundbreaking Pet Sounds masterpiece in 1966\, or after Mike Love’s concept album Endless Summer ignited a second generation of Beach Boys fans and stirred a tempest that rocked the music world\, or after recording Love’s co-written Golden Globe nominated “Kokomo” in 1988 and seeing it become its best-selling single ever\, or after being inducted that same year into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame\, The Beach Boys have chosen to continue touring and sharing music with the world\, a testament to their commitment to their art and fans. \n\n\n\nThe Beach Boys celebrated the 50th anniversary of the hit “Good Vibrations” – which is widely considered one of the greatest masterpieces in the history of rock and roll – in 2016 with a 50 Years of Good Vibrations tour\, underscoring the song’s status as a rock and roll masterpiece. Mike Love’s memoir\, GOOD VIBRATIONS: My Life as a Beach Boy\, further cemented their place in music history by becoming a New York Times Best Seller. \n\n\n\nRecent years have seen the release of comprehensive box sets like Feel Flows – The Sunflower and Surf’s Up Sessions 1969-1971” and Sail On Sailor – 1972\, exploring in-depth the band’s transformative periods. These collections\, featuring a plethora of previously unreleased tracks\, showcase the band’s versatility and profound influence on the music industry. \n\n\n\nIn 2023\, The Beach Boys were celebrated in the CBS tribute special “Grammy Salute to the Beach Boys\,” featuring performances by a diverse array of artists including Beck\, Brandi Carlile\, Michael McDonald\, Pentatonix\, St. Vincent\, Weezer\, Norah Jones\, John Legend\, and Mumford & Sons among others. \n\n\n\nLooking ahead\, the band is set to debut their official book\, The Beach Boys by The Beach Boys\, in April 2024 via Gensis Publications.  Published in a limited edition of only 500 copies worldwide\, the book offers an intimate look at the band’s journey from a Hawthorne garage band to international stardom\, enriched with rare photographs and historical documents. \n\n\n\nThe Beach Boys have been a significant presence at major events\, including Live Aid and the Statue of Liberty’s 100th Anniversary Salute\, showcasing their unparalleled ability to captivate audiences. Mike Love’s contributions as a songwriter\, in collaboration with Brian Wilson\, have produced timeless hits like “Surfin’\,” “Fun\, Fun\, Fun\,” and “California Girls\,” “Warmth of the Sun\,” “Good Vibrations\,”  and long list of other titles highlighting his enduring talent. \n\n\n\nContinuing to engage his fans with new and innovative projects\, in 2020 Love released the single “This Too Shall Pass”  featuring John Stamos aimed at offering hope during the Covid-19 pandemic. In 2019\, he released “12 Sides of Summer\,” featuring a mix of original songs\, covers\, and new versions of Beach Boys hits including “Surfin\,” “Surfin’ Safari” and “It’s Ok\,” featuring Hanson. The song marked Love’s second recording with Hanson\, after previously collaborating on “Finally it’s Christmas” for Love’s 2018 holiday album\, Reason For The Season\, which also features vocals from Love’s children: Ambha\, Brian\, Christian\, and Hayleigh Love. In 2017\, Love released a special double album entitled Unleash the Love featuring 13 previously unreleased songs and 14 re-recordings of Beach Boys classics to positive acclaim. \n\n\n\nMike Love’s philanthropy extends his influence far beyond the musical stage\, demonstrating a deep commitment to giving back to the community.  A Grammy® winner and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member\, Love has been at the forefront of numerous charitable efforts\, using his platform to support a wide range of causes. In 1990\, he responded to President George H. W. Bush’s call for service by founding StarServe\, an initiative aimed at motivating young people towards community service\, showcasing his early commitment to philanthropy. His philanthropic efforts were recognized when he and his wife Jacquelyne received the prestigious Points of Light Award\, highlighting his significant contributions to volunteer service and impacting lives across the globe. Through the Love Foundation\, Mike has supported initiatives focusing on education\, health\, environmental conservation\, and disaster relief\, showcasing a legacy of compassion and service alongside his storied musical career.

Bigger than ever\, playing to fans spanning multiple generations\, and in the midst of their most creative purple patch. A brand new album – titled The Night the Zombies Came – marks the group’s tenth studio record (if you count 1987’s Come On Pilgrim). 13 new songs that will arrive aptly in time for Halloween amongst a 2024 touring schedule taking in circa 70 shows across the globe – and even more to be announced in 2025. \n\n\n\nSpend an hour or two in the company of Charles Thompson IV\, and the conversation will soon fall to zombies\, bog people\, Druidism\, medieval theme restaurants\, shopping malls\, the Masons\, surf rock and the practice of slaughtering lambs in Monmouthshire. Along the way\, he might take in Shirley Collins\, the distinctive dry drum sound of 1970s’ Fleetwood Mac\, and the sestina\, a poetic form attributed to the 12th century Provencal troubadour Arnaut Daniel.  \n\n\n\nOut of such disparate wonders are Pixies’ albums made. “Fragments that are related\,” as Thompson (better known as Black Francis) puts it. “And juxtaposed with other fragments in other songs. And in a collection of songs in a so-called LP\, you end up making a kind of movie.” \n\n\n\nSince their earliest days in late 80s’ Massachusetts\, and on past their 2004 reformation\, Pixies have worked this way — proclaiming their love for both Hüsker Dü and Peter\, Paul and Mary\, relishing both loud and quiet\, singing somewhat kaleidoscopically of reincarnation\, scuba diving\, Luis Buñuel\, necromancy\, Samson and Delilah and the 1986 comedy drama Crimes of the Heart. From the start their music has been imagistic\, contradictory\, electrifying. They stand as one of the most influential\, revered and deeply adored bands of all time. \n\n\n\nThe juxtaposed fragments that make up this year’s The Night the Zombies Came are perhaps the most cinematic of their career — gothic meets sci-fi shlock\, horror flicks\, dark folk tales and Ennio Morricone westerns. \n\n\n\nEarly on\, the band noticed the songs were dividing into two camps: what they came to call the ‘Dust Bowl Songs’ — country-tinged\, ballad-esque numbers such as Primrose and Mercy Me\, and on the other side\, the album’s furious punk numbers such as You’re So Impatient and Chicken. Only Jane (the Night the Zombies Came) keeps its feet in both camps — reminiscent of early 60s Phil Spector\, the band hitting the sweet spot between mushy and abrasive\, it’s a track that Thompson allegedly likened to being chased by a swarm of bees. \n\n\n\nFor this outing\, the band returned to work with producer Tom Dalgety\, who has steered Pixies since 2016’s Head Carrier and on through 2019’s Beneath the Eyrie and 2022’s Doggerel\, and whom Thompson refers to as “a good master of a lot of information” and drummer David Lovering calls “a fifth Pixie now.” \n\n\n\nOver the course of the last three records\, they have established a rhythm with Dalgety: the producer heading to Thompson’s house in Massachusetts a week before recording to familiarise himself with the new songs\, sitting in his front room with a laptop\, while the singer strums out a few ideas. “I really love that process\,” Dalgety says. “From a professional\, productive side of things it’s really nice to get to know the songs and experiment. But also from a geeky fan point of view it’s quite cool being sat on the sofa and seeing ten Pixies songs just suddenly unfold in front of you.” \n\n\n\nFrom there\, the band reconvened once again at Guilford Sound studio in Vermont\, sharing a house together\, rehearsing in the living room\, walking through the autumn woods each day to the studio to record. The hours were not relentless. When the sun went down\, Thompson notes\, they could still go howl at the moon. \n\n\n\nBut they used their time wisely and often experimentally. For several records now\, Thompson has been chasing a different sound for the drums — not the expansive boom of the expensive studio live room with its perfect acoustics and high-end microphones\, but something deader and drier and more akin to the records he loved from the early 1970s.  \n\n\n\nFor a couple of Zombies’ tracks — Chicken and Mercy Me\, Lovering and Dalgety relented. The producer set up a small drum kit in a small room\, deadened the drum skins with cloth and gaffer tape. “And they stuff David in there\,” recalls Thompson. “And you know\, climbing in and out of it is sort of like climbing in and out of a fish aquarium. And it probably gets warm in there. So I’m sure that he suffered for my dry drum sound. I don’t know if there was blood\, but there was definitely a lot of sweat. And maybe some tears.” \n\n\n\nLovering is diplomatic. “Compact would be the word for it\,” he says. “Everything was just nice and muffled the way I like to hear it. And if you listen now\, it is concise\, you hear the drums much more\, they’re not as open and brash or arena style. They’re just right there\, and it makes for a different kind of sound.” \n\n\n\nThere were other changes\, too. A line-up shift has brought in bassist Emma Richardson (Band of Skulls)\, and with it\, a different quality to the band’s sound. Thompson praises the restrained elegance of her voice. Dalgety speaks of her “fantastic creative vibe”. Lovering describes her as “a consummate bass player.”  \n\n\n\nThe recent tour\, of which Richardson was a part\, was particularly joyful for the drummer. “I think the response to these shows and the way that we’ve been playing is because of the rhythm section\,” he says. “Of course I’m up there\, but Emma is up there with me. And when the rhythm section is locked on\, and laying it down with power\, Joe and Charles can screw off as much as they want. She’s just killing it.” \n\n\n\nFor Richardson\, the invitation to join Pixies was a huge and unexpected compliment. She spent weeks exploring the band’s back catalogue ahead of the live shows\, trying to understand their magic.“They have this amazing way of making something that is quite a complicated arrangement sound really effortless and very succinct\,” she says. “But actually when you’re picking it apart as a musician you realise all the tricks that they use. How cleverly they form songs and structures and lyrics.” \n\n\n\nThe new record is particularly special to her. “It’s incredible. It feels slightly different from anything they’ve done before. It’s got this brilliant mixture of a knowing nostalgia and a punk\, energetic\, fun element. But it’s got this dark underbelly\, and an almost romantic longing feel to it. They’ve created these little worlds which are quite cerebral and dreamlike\, but it’s also got these big vistas. It’s quite cinematic.” \n\n\n\nZombies also marks an expanded role for guitarist Joey Santiago. The track I Hear You Mary began as an instrumental he wrote for the previous album\, and having also contributed his first lyrics on Doggerel\, on this record\, Thompson set Santiago the task of writing the words to Hypnotised by completing a sestina — a lyrical riddle of sorts\, formed of six stanzas of six lines\, in which words are rotated in a set pattern. Santiago\, startled by the responsibility\, set about labouring over a complex set of lyrics before coming to a realisation: “The truth of the matter is you’re just putting fucking words together. The lesson is just not to be precious. Just fucking do it.” \n\n\n\nIn recent years\, Santiago has also sought to learn more about guitar playing — aware\, he says\, that it might help conquer his long-running imposter syndrome. “I was afraid\, kinda\, that I was going to lose my identity if I started studying it\, but it made my studio experience a lot easier\,” he says. For months\, he found himself following the Youtube algorithm as it guided him through intensive tutorials. “Every musician will tell you that it’s a never ending thing\,” he says. “It’s pretty remarkable that there are 12 notes and there are still possibilities out there.” \n\n\n\nLovering\, too\, has been deep in pursuit of self-improvement. “I find that the only time I get better or change or learn new things is just by playing and playing and playing\,” he says. “It’s taken me 50 years to learn how to play the drums\, and I mean that honestly. In the last year I’ve learned the way to play off my right hand — I never did that in the past\, I was lazy as hell! And everything is like a clock now. So I’m excited not only with what we did with the record\, but for upcoming stuff. We’re going to sound good!” \n\n\n\nBack in the company of Thompson\, the conversation has moved on to headless chickens\, gargoyles\, the lingering presence of the undead. “When we’re putting together a record\,” he says\, “we’re not trying to make it fit around a particular theme\, but there may be a couple of catchphrases or words or concepts that are kicked around. On this particular record\, I would say it would be ‘zombies’. Though it’s not in every song\, and it’s not necessarily presented in a literal way.” \n\n\n\nOn every album they’ve ever made\, Pixies have taken the record’s title from the lyrics — a song title\, or a line. For a time\, Thompson says\, he struggled to find a title for this new collection of songs. “The only phrase that seemed to sound good to me is this one. Everything else seemed too goofy. You would think The Night the Zombies Came would be the most goofy-sounding\, but to my ear\, and to Tom’s also and to the rest of the band\, it felt like ‘Oh\, yeah\, The Night the Zombies Came. That’s it. Of course.” \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout SpoonSpoon\, Austin’s most esteemed rock ambassadors\, have released ten albums to date including a string of five straight top 10 records: Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga (2007)\, Transference (2010)\, They Want My Soul (2014)\, Hot Thoughts (2017)\, and Lucifer on the Sofa (2022). \n\n\n\nLucifer on the Sofa earned the band its first-ever GRAMMY nomination (Best Rock Album) and was praised by Rolling Stone as “The best thing they’ve ever done.” \n\n\n\nHailed by TIME as “one of the greatest American rock bands”\, Spoon topped Metacritic’s chart as the single most critically acclaimed band of the aughts. \n\n\n\nIn 2019\, Spoon released Everything Hits At Once: The Best of Spoon\, which was praised by NPR as a “convincing argument for Spoon being one of their era’s most distinctive and excellent rock bands.” That same year\, Fender released the Britt Daniel Signature Telecaster Thinline as part of their artist signature electric guitar series – highlighting the enduring influence of Daniel’s precision-punk style that has helped fuel Spoon to become what the Guardian calls ‘one of the finest bands of their generation.’ \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout FazerdazeIn a society where being strong and resilient is often held up like a badge of honour\, it’s much\, much harder to acknowledge when enough is enough – to accept when it’s time to let go. It’s a truth that New Zealand singer/producer/multi-instrumentalist Amelia Murray has spent years wrangling with\, but one whose story thankfully comes with an empowering punchline of personal reclamation in the form of ‘Break!’: her returning EP as Fazerdaze. \n\n\n\n“You can get so caught up in these false constructs of niceness and loyalty – these rigid societal constructs of what being a ‘good’ person’ is – but the best thing I did for myself was break free of that paradigm and ruthlessly start putting myself first\,” she begins. “This EP is a punctuation mark of that\, of being disruptive and severing from the false parts of myself.”
