Time passes\, seasons turn\, people grow. Change is what makes life special.” \n\n\n\nCopper Changes Color\, Caamp’s fifth and most adventurous album to date\, is indeed a reflection on growth and evolution\, but it’s also a celebration of the dreams and bonds that endure. Recorded in Texas\, Oregon\, and New York with co-production from Beatriz Artola (Fleet Foxes\, Sharon Van Etten) and Tucker Martine (My Morning Jacket\, R.E.M.)\, the collection finds the breakout Midwestern band pushing their sound to new heights\, infusing their infectious brand of modern folk music with an electrifying dose of indie rock energy. The songs are raw and vulnerable\, alternating between buoyant\, breezy anthems and dreamy\, pensive meditations\, and the performances are honest and intuitive to match\, fueled by the undeniable chemistry between Meier and bandmates Evan Westfall\, Matt Vinson\, Joseph Kavalec\, and Nicholas Falk. Put it all together and you’ve got a rich\, rousing record built on love and trust in the face of doubt and uncertainty\, a joyful\, cathartic work about not just accepting change\, but learning to embrace it. The album debuted at No. 1 on Billboard’s Americana/Folk Albums chart and features fan favorite “Mistakes” which earned the band their fifth #1 at AAA Radio in 2025. \n\n\n\n“When we were putting the finishing touches on this record\, I started noticing copper everywhere I went\,” Meier recalls. “The older it was\, the more imperfect the finish had become\, but that patina was what gave it character. That’s the way I feel about our band ten years in.” \n\n\n\nFounded by childhood friends Meier and Westfall in Athens\, OH\, Caamp rocketed to early acclaim on the strength of their self-titled 2016 debut\, which generated hundreds of millions of streams across platforms and garnered the band their first gold single. Three years later\, the group topped the Billboard Heatseekers chart with their sophomore effort\, By and By\, which hit #1 at AAA radio\, earned the band festival slots everywhere from Outside Lands to Newport Folk\, and led to TV performances on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert\, Jimmy Kimmel Live!\, and CBS Saturday Morning. Caamp’s Lavender Days (2022) landed on NPR’s list of the year’s best roots albums\, topped the Americana Albums chart\, and earned the band their second and third #1 singles at AAA radio. In 2025\, the band released “And It’s Gone\,” written by Meier and featured as the theme song for the Apple TV+ series Stick\, starring Owen Wilson. \n\n\n\n“It’s so fun to just strike your guitar and let it echo through a room that size\,” says Westfall. “There’s something primal about it\, and while we never really consciously discussed it\, I think you can hear our sound growing to match the rooms we’re playing.” \n\n\n\nThough the band’s momentum seemed unstoppable in the wake of Lavender Days (to date\, they’ve amassed over 2.5 billion streams worldwide)\, Caamp’s 2025 U.S. headline tour reaffirmed their place as one of the most captivating live bands in modern music. The 33 show run sold over 200\,000 tickets and included sold-out nights at Fiddler’s Green Amphitheatre\, The Salt Shed (two nights)\, The Anthem (two nights)\, The Greek Theatre\, and Radio City Music Hall (two nights). \n\n\n\n“I’ve experienced so many different versions of myself these past few years\,” Meier reflects. “I’ve been focusing on healing and recovery while still processing a lot of grief and loss\, and it made me take stock of my head and my heart and my friends and my family and figure out what really matters.” \n\n\n\nAs Meier found himself embarking on new phases during this period — he turned thirty\, began splitting his time between central Ohio and the Lower East Side of Manhattan\, and fell in love with early-2000s indie bands like The Strokes — he also found himself recommitted and more grateful than ever for the steadfast connection he shared with his bandmates. \n\n\n\n“There’s just so much trust\,” says Meier. “We trust each other\, we trust the songs\, we trust the process. It allows us to work freely and push ourselves to places we haven’t been.” \n\n\n\nWhen it came time to record\, the band headed first to El Paso’s famed Sonic Ranch Studio\, where they tracked nearly 20 songs in just a week with Artola and drummer/longtime collaborator Josh Block (Leon Bridges\, White Denim). After a break\, the group headed to Portland’s Flora Recording to collaborate with Martine on another batch of tunes before finishing up with a final session at Manhattan’s Sear Sound. \n\n\n\n“There was no rush\,” says Vinson. “We knew we could take our time and enjoy just getting together in a room and seeing what happened when we took our sound to some uncharted places. There’s a live performance at the core of each of these tracks\, and I think that’s what ties this whole collection together.” \n\n\n\nThat live energy is obvious from the outset on Copper Changes Color\, which opens with the driving “Millions.” Punchy and magnetic\, the track shifts partway through from sunny garage rock to muscular Americana\, setting the stage perfectly for a record that boldly walks the line between genres while proudly wearing its heart on its sleeve. The lush “One True Way” (feat. Madi Diaz) questions whether anyone ever truly knows what they’re doing\, while the mesmerizing “Fairview Feeling” makes peace with our imperfections\, and the effervescent “Mistakes” lays its cards on the table\, with Meier singing\, “Can I get to know you\, honey / And all of your lovely mistakes / I’ve got more than a few to show you.” \n\n\n\n“I remember walking around when I first moved to New York and having all this dialogue in my head\,” he explains\, “but the streets were even more chaotic\, which slowed things down and allowed me to open up to the possibility of writing something really vulnerable. I found that the city scratches a different itch for me\, and I spent a lot of time there just walking around\, writing and rewriting verses and trying to go deeper than I ever have on this record.” \n\n\n\nDeep as Meier takes things\, he and the band never lose sight of life’s simple pleasures. The addictive “Porchswing” revels in the joys of a steady\, reliable love; the Britpop-tinged “Shade” pledges to always be there to pick up a partner’s slack; the exhilarating “Waiting Up (For You)” basks in the glow of a connection that transcends distance; and the tongue-in-cheek “Ohio’s Ugly” savors the feeling of sharing a place you love with someone you care about. \n\n\n\n“It’s a song about falling in love with a girl and wanting to pull her back to Ohio\,” Meier explains. “People don’t understand why we’re still here\, but anybody from the Midwest will tell you there’s a magic to it. I travel all over the world now\, but nothing beats coming home.” \n\n\n\nUltimately\, Copper Changes Color is all about that push and pull between old and new\, between the thrill of the unknown and the comforts of the familiar. “No one knows how long this lasts / Try and make it sweet\,” Meier sings on poignant album closer “Drive.” Change isn’t just inevitable\, it’s essential. Enjoy the patina. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Blind Pilot \n\n\n\nThe first Blind Pilot album in eight years\, In the Shadow of the Holy Mountain emerged from a period of artistic crisis and the radical transformation of their creative ecosystem. “I went through a few years where I wasn’t able to write—I tried therapy\, I read books on writer’s block\, I went on writing trips\, but nothing was helping\,” says Israel Nebeker\, frontman for the Oregon-bred band. After stepping back and reimagining his songwriting approach\, Nebeker challenged himself to write an entire album in a month\, then brought those songs to his bandmates with a newfound sense of receptivity. “I told myself that whatever songs came through in that month would be for the love of the band and music we make together\,” says Nebeker. “Instead of being controlling in the studio\, I wanted to let the songs live and breathe with the band as an entity. By the time we finished\, it was the most joy we’d ever had in making an album together.” \n\n\n\nProduced by Josh Kaufman (The Hold Steady\, David Wax Museum)\, In the Shadow of the Holy Mountain brings a potent new energy to the elegantly composed folk/indie-rock of past LPs like 2016’s And Then Like Lions. In a profound step forward for the band—whose lineup also includes drummer/co-founder Ryan Dobrowski\, bassist Luke Ydstie\, and multi-instrumentalist Kati Claborn—Blind Pilot’s fourth full-length unfolds with an exquisite fluidity\, fully harnessing the undeniable chemistry. “In the past we’ve always been very serious and intentional about the process\, but Josh often encouraged us to throw away our preconceived notions of what the songs were supposed to be\,” says Nebeker. “So much of the album came from all of us playing live together\, listening to each other and trusting our instincts\, and really getting to the core of the song\,” Dobrowski adds. The result: the most revelatory expression yet of Blind Pilot’s palpable reverence for music as a connective force. \n\n\n\nWhile Blind Pilot intends to tour principally as a quartet in support of the record\, the album includes contributions from longtime trumpeter/keyboardist Dave Jorgensen and vibraphonist Ian Krist. In bringing the album to life\, the band worked with a rich palette of instrumentation\, handling each track with equal parts extraordinary care and unbridled spontaneity. For both Dobrowski and Nebeker—who formed an early iteration of the band as college students in the mid-aughts—those moments of ineffably closeness serve as the lifeblood of Blind Pilot. “For me making this album felt like celebrating being together and still feeling that deep connection that’s been a throughline for our entire adult lives\,” Dobrowski says. “One of my very favorite things about music is the way it not only connects us as bandmates\, but allows us to connect to an audience—and then within that audience\, people end up connecting with each other. It’s this powerful thing that’s unlike anything else\, and in a way it’s kind of like magic.”

As a young group of musicians\, they were the prototype of the modern\, self-starting band–taking charge of their fate by working the internet and building an identifiable sound. The band’s music\, a rock/reggae fusion\, consisted of songs that were fully accessible\, yet teasingly elusive. Attracting fans all across the country\, the band members toured relentlessly\, pushing their album sales through boundless dedication and word-of- mouth appeal\, never waiting for the industry to catch up. \n\n\n\nBy the time the band had reached their 10 year anniversary together\, they had sold over 1.2 million albums and performed in front of over 1 million people. In the sparkling\, acoustic guitar-driven track\, Quinn ruminates on falling for a twin flame who lives for the escapism of transient life\, too. “It’s a song about seeing how you deal with things in someone else\,” he says. “Which is really comforting\, but it’s also an opportunity to be introspective and helpful to each other.” \n\n\n\n“God Loves Weirdos” dives deeper into life on the road\, after the stage lights go out. “You pull into the gas station and those are your date nights — goofing around at a truck stop\, looking at all the funny T-shirts\,” Quinn says of the track. “Maybe the road is pulling you apart\, but then you have those moments where you’re laughing and thinking\, ‘This is so fun. I love this person.’” \n\n\n\n“More More More\,” on the other hand\, deals with what happens when you do come home — the depression that creeps in when the world goes quiet. After 20 years as a cult favorite\, she broke through to the top in the early 90s with her GRAMMY-award-winning albums\, Nick of Time and Luck of the Draw\, which featured hits\, “Something To Talk About” and “I Can’t Make You Love Me” among others. The thirteen-time GRAMMY winner was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2000 and Rolling Stone named the slide guitar ace one of the “100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time” and one of the “100 Greatest Singers of All Time.” \n\n\n\nThe past few years have been very busy for Raitt. In 2022\, Raitt embarked on a 75-date headlining U.S. tour; released her critically acclaimed 21st album ‘Just Like That…\,’ (the third release on her independent label\, Redwing Records) which was #1 on six Billboard charts the week of release and was perched at #1 on the Americana Radio Album Chart for ten consecutive weeks. The album’s first single\, “Made Up Mind” remained in the top three spots on the Americana Radio Singles Chart for 17 weeks. Raitt also received the Icon Award at Billboard Women In Music Awards\, the was recognized by the Recording Academy with a Lifetime Achievement Award and she saw her breakthrough album\, ‘Nick of Time’ added to the Library of Congress’ National Recording Registry. \n\n\n\nThe momentum rolled into 2023 with Raitt earning three GRAMMY™ Awards at the 65 th Annual ceremony; Song Of The Year and Best American Roots Song for the title track of her most recent album “Just Like That…”\, and Best Americana Performance for “Made Up Mind.” She then embarked on a busy year of touring not just in the U.S. but with stops in Australia\, Canada\, Ireland\, and the UK. In 2024\, Raitt returned to the U.S. and performed over 60 shows spanning coast to coast\, and as the year came to a close\, Raitt received another incredible accolade being recognized for her lifetime of artistic achievement as part of the Kennedy Center’s 47th Class of Honorees in Washington\, DC. 2025 saw Raitt and her band play another 60+ concerts together to audiences across the US\, Ireland\, the UK and Europe. \n\n\n\nRaitt is as known for her lifelong commitment to social activism as she is for her music\, and has long been involved with the environmental movement\, performing concerts around oil\, nuclear power\, mining\, water\, and forest protection since the mid-‘70s. She was a founding member of MUSE (Musicians United for Safe Energy)\, which produced the historic concerts\, album and film NO NUKES (1979\,) as well as a founding member of The Rhythm and Blues Foundation\, which works for royalty reform and recognition of generations of pioneer R&B artists. She continues to work on safe energy issues in addition to environmental protection\, social justice\, Native American and human rights\, as well as artist’s rights and music education. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Jon Cleary \n\n\n\nAfter thirty-five years of being at the forefront of the ever-evolving musical landscape of New Orleans\, two-time Grammy award winner Jon Cleary decided to bring that sound back home\, both figuratively and literally. He assembled his Absolute Monster Gentlemen (his acclaimed all-star big band) in his home studio in the Bywater neighborhood of New Orleans\, drew up a setlist of some of his most beloved songs– and some new favorites– and rolled tape. \n\n\n\n“We set out to capture that sound in the old-fashioned way: everybody in the room\, playing together\,” Cleary explains. \n\n\n\nThe result is The Bywater Sessions\, a musical tour-de-force that showcases the grit\, funk and joy that’s packed concert halls from New Orleans to Tokyo and beyond. Co-produced by Cleary and John Porter (Roxy Music\, The Smiths\, Taj Mahal)\, it’s a stunning collection of performances that affirms Cleary’s place in the New Orleans musical vanguard. \n\n\n\n“There’s a lot to be said for the ‘lean and mean’ sound of a piano trio\, stripped down to basics\, simple and direct\,” Cleary says. “But recently\, I’ve been experimenting with different combinations; adding horns\, guitar\, percussion and even another keyboard player. This expanded line-up has allowed the arrangements to blossom in new directions.” \n\n\n\nAs for the musicians\, it’s the best of the best. Long time Monster Gentlemen Cornell Williams and A.J. Hall anchor the band on bass and drums\, respectively. They are joined by Nigel Hall (Lettuce) on Hammond organ\, Pedro Segundo (Ronnie Scott’s All Stars) on percussion\, Xavier Lynn (MonoNeon\, Ledisi) on guitar\, and an all-star horn section of Aaron Narcisse (Delfeayo Marsalis & the Uptown Jazz Orchestra)\, Charlie Halloran (Squirrel Nut Zippers\, Preservation Hall All Stars) and Jason Mingledorff (Galactic). \n\n\n\n“Sophisticated\, nasty\, good-time\, low-down funk is the folk music of New Orleans\,” Cleary says. “Everyone playing on this recording is a New Orleanian by birth or by choice\, having learned their craft at the feet of the masters who in turn were taught by the old lions in their day – it’s a tradition stretching back over two hundred years. The roots go deep\, but each generation\, growing up with street parades and second-lines\, absorbs the old and introduces the new\, gently coaxing the essential essence into and out of each succeeding decade.” \n\n\n\nIt’s an apt description of Cleary’s career thus far. Born in London and on a plane to New Orleans before he turned twenty years old\, he grew up absorbed by the sounds and rhythms of the Crescent City. His mastery of the city’s music landed him gigs playing as a session musician in the bands of local legends Earl King\, Johnny Adams\, Walter ‘Wolfman’ Washington\, Snooks Eaglin\, Ernie K-Doe\, Jessie Hill– and as a guitarist for Dr. John. He later toured extensively with icons like Bonnie Raitt and Taj Mahal. His solo career began in earnest in 1989 and includes beloved records like their self-titled band debut and his 2015 Grammy winner\, Go-Go Juice. \n\n\n\nIn fact\, his first job in New Orleans was as a painter at beloved local club the Maple Leaf Bar\, and it wasn’t long until he was playing piano in that very room. To this day\, he and his band continue to pack that room to crowds that gather from around the world\, playing their unique and ever-evolving take on New Orleans funk and R&B. \n\n\n\n“These grooves are not museum pieces\, they are alive\, breathing and fresh – and that’s why joints like Tipitina’s\, The Maple Leaf Bar and Chickie Wah Wah are always packed when the locals\, young and old\, come out to hear the Gentlemen do they thang\,” Cleary proudly adds. \n\n\n\nOn The Bywater Sessions\, the band that Rolling Stone’s David Fricke called “as broad\, deep and rolling as the Mississippi river” is finally captured as intended– live\, in the room and as funky as ever. And with that comes an invitation from Cleary himself: \n\n\n\n“Close your eyes\, imagine you’re in the room with us\, me and the band\, Mike Dorsey the engineer\, John Porter the producer and Reed the manager. She has released five albums\, sold over five million records\, composed music for television\, and received two GRAMMY nominations. In 2019\, she published a memoir\, Horror Stories (Random House)\, which the LA Times called “a raw look at fame\, motherhood and aging with all the unbridled honesty of the songs that put the singer in the spotlight in the first place.” \n\n\n\nIn 2023\, Phair toured to celebrate the 30th anniversary of her widely-loved debut\, Exile in Guyville\, performing the record in its entirety at sold-out shows across the US. For as deadly serious as their airtight technical riffing is\, they also knew how to have a good time\, riling up crowds with uncontainable energy and unpredictable performances. They could bludgeon with the best of them or serve up the kind of sing-along banger you could blast with the windows down. \n\n\n\nFrom day one\, they naturally appealed to the headbangers\, hardcore kids\, and heartbroken alike. \n\n\n\nIn 2002\, Alive Or Just Breathing sent shockwaves through the culture\, claiming a spot on Decibel’s “The Top 100 Greatest Metal Albums of All Time.” They generated north of 3 billion streams and picked up gold and platinum plaques for The End of Heartache and As Day Light Dies respectively. They notably received three GRAMMY® Award nominations for “Best Metal Performance” and cracked the Top 10 on the Billboard 200 with a trio of consecutive releases: Killswitch Engage [2009]\, Disarm The Descent [2013]\, and Incarnate [2016]. Meanwhile\, 2019’s Atonement represented a critical high watermark with praise from Forbes\, Revolver\, and NME who christened it “one of the most engaged and exciting records that Killswitch has ever made.” The guys have not only packed houses on repeated successful headline tours across the globe\, but they have consistently held their own sharing bills with acts from Iron Maiden\, Slipknot\, and Slayer to My Chemical Romance\, Rise Against\, and Coheed & Cambria. \n\n\n\nHowever\, Killswitch Engage harness all of their strengths on their ninth full-length LP\, This Consequence [Metal Blade Records]. They’ve distilled the hallmarks of their signature sound into a bruising\, often brutal\, and at times brilliantly bright body of work. \n\n\n\n“Making this record lit a fire under my ass and made me rethink everything\,” admits Jesse. “It had to be next level. It had to be different enough for people to really recognize we’re putting forth an effort—or what’s the point of doing this? There was no repeating ourselves. It was very carefully planned out and passionately written. It sounds like Killswitch\, yet there’s also a fresh spirit to it.” \n\n\n\nThis time around\, the group emphasized working together face-to-face in a Massachusetts rehearsal spot. The process enabled them to apply the pressure on every element. At the collective urging of his bandmates\, Jesse poured over his words like never before. \n\n\n\n“We pushed him to do more vocal demos and were super tough on him\,” recalls Adam. “He was so open to feedback though\, and he definitely got the lyrics right. I love it when he and I are face-to-face\, and ideas are flying around. We work especially well together when we’re in the heat of the moment. All of the demoing made for a better record\, and there was so much communication between all of the band members.” \n\n\n\n“It felt like everyone put a ton of effort into this\,” Mike adds. “It’s the first time since Alive Or Just Breathing that we really hashed everything out together in the same room. It was a combined effort\, and there are even some things you’ve never heard from Killswitch.” \n\n\n\nJesse culled inspiration from “hours on Thesaurus.com\,” reading as many books as possible\, and interacting with fans on the road in between. He confesses\, “I found my voice again.” \n\n\n\n“I never considered myself to be a part of mainstream society\,” he goes on. “I’ve always been in the middle. To me\, this record is about the consequences of our actions as humans as we engage in war\, hatred\, division\, and falling in line with control. History repeats itself. We’re going to have to answer for our actions—whether it’s how we treat the earth or each other. There will be an uprising and a backlash from nature. Cause-and-effect is a driving theme. We will face a consequence.” \n\n\n\nThe first single “Forever Aligned” finds the band firing on all cylinders. Jesse’s growl weighs heavy on a galloping beat and dual-guitar battering ram. The barrage breaks like a wave on a chantable chorus\, “It’s you\, I find\, forever in my mind\, we are aligned\,” giving way to a melodic bridge laced with a hummable lead line. \n\n\n\n“When you find someone who won’t give up on you\, forge a friendship\, or have a family member who makes you a better person\, you realize what love actually is\,” notes the frontman. “I think true love is far beyond human comprehension. We have glimpses of it\, but we’ll never grasp it. When you’re striving to be filled with love\, it’s a selfless path. It’s a spiritual connection; it transcends life and death. The energy of love moves on eternally\, so you’re forever aligned with who you love.” \n\n\n\n“Even with all of the brutality\, the hook is right up there with some of our best\,” smiles Mike. “We felt like it was the perfect song to introduce this chapter and show we’re ready to go.” \n\n\n\n“Aftermath” illuminates the dynamics of This Consequence. A lightly picked intro bleeds into the wail of guitar as epic drums boom. It kicks into high gear towards a hypnotic refrain\, “We’re reeling from the aftermath\, still bleeding from the damage of the past\,” as Jesse declares\, “This is the consequence.” \n\n\n\n“If you’ve ever dealt with depression\, one day you wake up and have this revelation\, ‘I’m going to be okay. This is a new day’\,” he goes on. “You get this injection of hope and think\, ‘I got through this. How do I move forward]?’ ‘Aftermath’ is simply about finding yourself again and healing from all that you went through.” \n\n\n\nFollowing the face-ripping “Where It Dies” and towering catharsis of “I Believe\,” the vital and vitriolic “Collusion” confronts corruption at its ancient roots. Jesse laments\, “It’s a world in collusion.” \n\n\n\n“The powers-that-be use manipulation to control the masses\,” he sighs. “It goes back to even the Roman Empire. There are all of these tricky secret handshakes and backroom deals. I’d rather be pessimistic and questioning than gullible and rolling with it. Dig a little deeper and read between the lines.” \n\n\n\nThen\, there’s “Broken Glass.” It may be one of the unabashedly and uncompromisingly heavy compositions in the Killswitch catalog. It crawls along on a nail-scraping stomp anchored by a thick riff and guttural scream. \n\n\n\n“I’m most stoked on ‘Broken Glass’\,” says Adam. “It definitely doesn’t sound like anything we’ve ever done before.” \n\n\n\n“It’s a metaphor\,” reveals Jesse. “A liar’s words will cut you like broken glass. I’m sure anybody who has lived through the breakdown of a family or a relationship can relate to the images of shattered windows or smashed alcohol bottles. We don’t realize how deep abuse can run in our blood and affect us.” \n\n\n\nNow\, This Consequence might just set the stage for another 25 years of Killswitch Engage. \n\n\n\n“This band is still just a group of friends who get together and play music—but to some of the biggest crowds we could’ve ever imagined\,” Mike leaves off. “Even after all of this time\, there’s a lot of love being thrown around.” \n\n\n\n“The goal is to make the fans happy\,” concludes Adam. “When you come to a show\, it’s about fun. I love the connection we have. If the crowd is having a good time\, we’re having a good time. This record is for everybody who has been with us for all of these years.” \n\n\n\n“The world is in a dark place\, but we’re going to get through this\,” grins Jesse. “Music has always been a light in the darkness when I feel like all hope is lost. Certain albums came along at the right time and saved me. We are giving everything we have\, because it’s all we got. We have a chance to take Killswitch to another level. That excitement is like fuel. We have everything to prove and nothing to prove\, because we are right where we need to be.” – Rick Florino\, October 2024. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Machine HeadUndisputed masters of murderous riffs\, pugnacious grooves and ferocious hooks since 1991\, Machine Head are long established as one of the most influential and incendiary bands in metal. \n\n\n\nFrom genre-expanding triumphs like 1994’s debut\, Burn My Eyes\, 1999’s The Burning Red to the planet-conquering might of 2007’s The Blackening\, to the new life injected in 2014’s Bloodstone and Diamonds\, Machine Head have carved a singular path across the globe for over three decades now with no end in sight. Whether it be marathon 3-hour live performances\, or millions of albums sold worldwide\, and accolades both big and small\, there aren’t too many ‘distractions’ clouding up the vision of guitarist/vocalist/founder Robb Flynn these days. \n\n\n\nIn 2022\, Machine Head are back with their most crushing and complete album yet. ØF KINGDØM AND CRØWN is an hour-long conceptual monolith\, rich in colour and dynamics but hell-bent on destruction. Set in a futuristic wasteland where the sky is always crimson red\, ØF KINGDØM AND CRØWN tells the tale of two characters\, both faced with incalculable trauma\, whose stories become bloodily entwined as this deep\, dark record progresses. \n\n\n\n“The album and concept was loosely inspired by the Japanese anime series Attack On Titan\,” says Robb\, “in the sense that in that series\, there is no “good” or “bad” guy… both sides believe they’re doing the right thing\, but both are committing atrocities and evil.” \n\n\n\nAlbum opener\, “SLAUGHTER THE MARTYR\,” sets the tone for not only the record\, but the aural and psychological exploration the listener is about to embark on.  From the first dissonant note\, its certain this is not only fresh canvas spelled out with lead vocalist Robb Flynn and bassist Jared MacEachern’s soaring vocal harmonies\, but its intent is as furious as anything the band has ever come up with. This track also begins the journey of our protagonists. \n\n\n\nFurther exploration of the damaged psyche blasts forth on “CHØKE ØN THE ASHES ØF YØUR HATE\,” a searing back and forth dose of Thrash Metal that could only come from the roots of the Bay Area.  Unrelenting in its attack\, the breakneck pace only solidifies this as one of many standouts on ØF KINGDØM AND CRØWN. \n\n\n\nFrom the adrenaline rush of exorcising their inner demons to the innate feeling of solitude and regret comes “UNHALLØWED.”  A dramatic introspective of questioning one’s motives and the fallout when the debts our expended emotions come to collect.  Hopeless\, lost\, and isolated\, protagonist #2 begins the transformation from victim to victimizer over the melodic chaos courtesy of guitarist Vogg Kiełtyka.  Radicalized\, paranoid\, and armed with a dead-end stare\, the mental onslaught ignites with the song\, “KILL THY ENEMIES.”  The whiplash inducing thoughts pair up nicely with some of the thickest grooves on the album. \n\n\n\nThe album ends with arguably the finest song Machine Head have ever written: “ARRØWS IN WØRDS FRØM THE SKY”\, the grandiose but emotionally visceral climax to the finest and most ferocious album of the band’s 30 year career. \n\n\n\nA perennially vital force in heavy music\, Machine Head have continued their exhilarating evolution\, while never losing the furious spirit of their old school\, underground roots. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Rivers of NihilSixteen years and five albums after the Pennsylvania band’s formation\, progressive death metal progenitors Rivers of Nihil are upping the ante with their 2025 self-titled album Rivers of Nihil. Traditionally\, a self-titled record can signal a return to basics and/or a fresh beginning\, and in 10 powerful songs\, it’s clear that both those factors are in play. Founding bassist Adam Biggs became the band’s new lead vocalist/bassist in 2023; the same year marked the appearance of additional guitarist Andy Thomas (ex-Black Crown Initiate)\, whose vocals also play prominently on Rivers of Nihil. Producers Carson Slovak and Grant McFarland at Atrium Audio captured the new dynamics across more than 50 minutes of music. \n\n\n\nOn June 15\, 2023\, the band released a new single\, “The Sub-Orbital Blues\,” the first track with Biggs handling lead vocals (following the 2022 departure of singer Jake Dieffenbach\, and also their first featuring Thomas). A second single\, “Hellbirds\,” dropped on October 19 of that year. On April 29\, 2024\, the band released the cut “Criminals” and an accompanying music video. Both “Criminals” and “The Sub-Orbital Blues” appear on Rivers of Nihil. \n\n\n\nThe new album’s first single of 2025\, “House of Light\,” is a track the band believes “encapsulates the nature of what it is that we do perfectly while offering a different perspective on the sound with the new lineup\,” explains founding member/guitarist Brody Uttley\, who also plays piano and does the programming in the band. “Everything that our fans have come to love about our sound is demonstrated in this song with the new addition of Andy singing and Biggs on main vocals. It has the riffs\, it has the big chorus\, it has the prog\, it has the solos\, it has the sax. Just a real classic example of what we will do as a band in 2025.” \n\n\n\nRivers of Nihil also showcases additional musicians\, including Patrick Corona on alto saxophone; Stephan Lopez on banjo; McFarland on cello; and a slate of other guest vocalists. Further singles include “American Death\,” a true-to-form beater that’s sure to slay live\, and “Water & Time\,” which Uttley says is Rivers’ “stab at writing a big chorus style synth-laden song. The main melody on synth came out so cool the band filled out the song with “metal band stuff” for the potent final version heard on Rivers of Nihil. \n\n\n\nDespite the fresh approach on Rivers of Nihil\, the album fits neatly into the band’s discography. With Where Owls Know My Name (2018)\, Rivers of Nihil transcended all labels applied to them\, and with its 2021 follow-up\, The Work\, they forged further into new territory. Metal Injection calling the latter album “by far the group’s most cohesive\, ambitious\, meditative\, and varied effort\, with greater uses of philosophical significance and transcendental respites.” \n\n\n\nThe quartet’s musicianship has been honed to a fine point thanks to an unrelenting touring schedule over the past few years\, including headline tours of the U.S. and EU/UK\, as well as support slots on the Chaos and Carnage Tour (Cattle Decapitation\, Carnifex\, etc.)\, Lorna Shore\, Between the Buried and Me\, and shows with Killswitch Engage. \n\n\n\nAnd the roadwork continues even before Rivers of Nihil’s2025 release. Rivers will bring with them three of the other biggest names in progressive death metal –Cynic\, Beyond Creation\, and Dååth — for the European and UK  “Aggressive Progressive Tour\,”  which kicks off February 28\, 2025\, in Germany.
