After 20 years as a cult favorite\, she broke through to the top in the early 90s with her GRAMMY-award-winning albums\, Nick of Time and Luck of the Draw\, which featured hits\, “Something To Talk About” and “I Can’t Make You Love Me” among others. The thirteen-time GRAMMY winner was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2000 and Rolling Stone named the slide guitar ace one of the “100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time” and one of the “100 Greatest Singers of All Time.” \n\n\n\nThe past few years have been very busy for Raitt. In 2022\, Raitt embarked on a 75-date headlining U.S. tour; released her critically acclaimed 21st album ‘Just Like That…\,’ (the third release on her independent label\, Redwing Records) which was #1 on six Billboard charts the week of release and was perched at #1 on the Americana Radio Album Chart for ten consecutive weeks. The album’s first single\, “Made Up Mind” remained in the top three spots on the Americana Radio Singles Chart for 17 weeks. Raitt also received the Icon Award at Billboard Women In Music Awards\, the was recognized by the Recording Academy with a Lifetime Achievement Award and she saw her breakthrough album\, ‘Nick of Time’ added to the Library of Congress’ National Recording Registry. \n\n\n\nThe momentum rolled into 2023 with Raitt earning three GRAMMY™ Awards at the 65 th Annual ceremony; Song Of The Year and Best American Roots Song for the title track of her most recent album “Just Like That…”\, and Best Americana Performance for “Made Up Mind.” She then embarked on a busy year of touring not just in the U.S. but with stops in Australia\, Canada\, Ireland\, and the UK. In 2024\, Raitt returned to the U.S. and performed over 60 shows spanning coast to coast\, and as the year came to a close\, Raitt received another incredible accolade being recognized for her lifetime of artistic achievement as part of the Kennedy Center’s 47th Class of Honorees in Washington\, DC. 2025 saw Raitt and her band play another 60+ concerts together to audiences across the US\, Ireland\, the UK and Europe. \n\n\n\nRaitt is as known for her lifelong commitment to social activism as she is for her music\, and has long been involved with the environmental movement\, performing concerts around oil\, nuclear power\, mining\, water\, and forest protection since the mid-‘70s. She was a founding member of MUSE (Musicians United for Safe Energy)\, which produced the historic concerts\, album and film NO NUKES (1979\,) as well as a founding member of The Rhythm and Blues Foundation\, which works for royalty reform and recognition of generations of pioneer R&B artists. She continues to work on safe energy issues in addition to environmental protection\, social justice\, Native American and human rights\, as well as artist’s rights and music education. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Jon Cleary \n\n\n\nAfter thirty-five years of being at the forefront of the ever-evolving musical landscape of New Orleans\, two-time Grammy award winner Jon Cleary decided to bring that sound back home\, both figuratively and literally. He assembled his Absolute Monster Gentlemen (his acclaimed all-star big band) in his home studio in the Bywater neighborhood of New Orleans\, drew up a setlist of some of his most beloved songs– and some new favorites– and rolled tape. \n\n\n\n“We set out to capture that sound in the old-fashioned way: everybody in the room\, playing together\,” Cleary explains. \n\n\n\nThe result is The Bywater Sessions\, a musical tour-de-force that showcases the grit\, funk and joy that’s packed concert halls from New Orleans to Tokyo and beyond. Co-produced by Cleary and John Porter (Roxy Music\, The Smiths\, Taj Mahal)\, it’s a stunning collection of performances that affirms Cleary’s place in the New Orleans musical vanguard. \n\n\n\n“There’s a lot to be said for the ‘lean and mean’ sound of a piano trio\, stripped down to basics\, simple and direct\,” Cleary says. “But recently\, I’ve been experimenting with different combinations; adding horns\, guitar\, percussion and even another keyboard player. This expanded line-up has allowed the arrangements to blossom in new directions.” \n\n\n\nAs for the musicians\, it’s the best of the best. Long time Monster Gentlemen Cornell Williams and A.J. Hall anchor the band on bass and drums\, respectively. They are joined by Nigel Hall (Lettuce) on Hammond organ\, Pedro Segundo (Ronnie Scott’s All Stars) on percussion\, Xavier Lynn (MonoNeon\, Ledisi) on guitar\, and an all-star horn section of Aaron Narcisse (Delfeayo Marsalis & the Uptown Jazz Orchestra)\, Charlie Halloran (Squirrel Nut Zippers\, Preservation Hall All Stars) and Jason Mingledorff (Galactic). \n\n\n\n“Sophisticated\, nasty\, good-time\, low-down funk is the folk music of New Orleans\,” Cleary says. “Everyone playing on this recording is a New Orleanian by birth or by choice\, having learned their craft at the feet of the masters who in turn were taught by the old lions in their day – it’s a tradition stretching back over two hundred years. The roots go deep\, but each generation\, growing up with street parades and second-lines\, absorbs the old and introduces the new\, gently coaxing the essential essence into and out of each succeeding decade.” \n\n\n\nIt’s an apt description of Cleary’s career thus far. Born in London and on a plane to New Orleans before he turned twenty years old\, he grew up absorbed by the sounds and rhythms of the Crescent City. His mastery of the city’s music landed him gigs playing as a session musician in the bands of local legends Earl King\, Johnny Adams\, Walter ‘Wolfman’ Washington\, Snooks Eaglin\, Ernie K-Doe\, Jessie Hill– and as a guitarist for Dr. John. He later toured extensively with icons like Bonnie Raitt and Taj Mahal. His solo career began in earnest in 1989 and includes beloved records like their self-titled band debut and his 2015 Grammy winner\, Go-Go Juice. \n\n\n\nIn fact\, his first job in New Orleans was as a painter at beloved local club the Maple Leaf Bar\, and it wasn’t long until he was playing piano in that very room. To this day\, he and his band continue to pack that room to crowds that gather from around the world\, playing their unique and ever-evolving take on New Orleans funk and R&B. \n\n\n\n“These grooves are not museum pieces\, they are alive\, breathing and fresh – and that’s why joints like Tipitina’s\, The Maple Leaf Bar and Chickie Wah Wah are always packed when the locals\, young and old\, come out to hear the Gentlemen do they thang\,” Cleary proudly adds. \n\n\n\nOn The Bywater Sessions\, the band that Rolling Stone’s David Fricke called “as broad\, deep and rolling as the Mississippi river” is finally captured as intended– live\, in the room and as funky as ever. And with that comes an invitation from Cleary himself: \n\n\n\n“Close your eyes\, imagine you’re in the room with us\, me and the band\, Mike Dorsey the engineer\, John Porter the producer and Reed the manager. It’s been a long year already.” \n\n\n\nABOMINATION REVEALED AT LAST and its singles have received acclaim from Stereogum\, Aquarium Drunkard (review)\, FLOOD Magazine (review\, premiere)\, Brooklyn Vegan\, The Line of Best Fit\, Northern Transmissions\, RIFF Magazine\, and many more. The LP was recorded by Enrique Tena Padilla\, Mario Ramirez  & Dwyer\, mixed by Padilla and Dwyer\, and mastered by JJ Golden. \n\n\n\nOSEES are John Dwyer (vocals/guitar/synths)\, Tom Dolas (guitar/samples/keys)\, Tim Hellman (bass)\, and Dan Rincon (drums). \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Traps PSTraps PS are a band that breaks “less is more” all the way down to “less is everything.” You get it: like the Minutemen\, the songs are short because they don’t need to be long. And like the Minutemen\, sixty seconds of Traps PS hits harder and resonates longer than five-ten-twenty sloppy minutes from somebody else. Or like Gang of Four\, who got it from James Brown\, who is a fundamental Traps PS inspiration—Traps PS cares about discipline\, rhythm and clarity. Says drummer Miles Wintner: “We don’t waste time.” \n\n\n\nThey’ve always been unafraid to do what needed to be done\, this practically telepathic trio of Wintner\, bassist/backing vocalist Danny Miller and singer/guitarist Andrew Jeffords. They recorded and released records on their community-oriented/community-involved label Papermade and played any space they’d fit—lost all ages institutions like L.A.’s Pehrspace or not-exactly legal “guerilla” shows on city streets and in dusty Inglewood oil fields. But with their first full-length in three years coming into focus\, they found L.A. independent label Innovative Leisure ready to amplify that DIY capability: “We’ve done so much in our own bubble that it was exciting to explore another aspect\,” says Jeffords. “I’m enjoying inviting people into our family.” \n\n\n\nBy the time they walked into Long Beach’s Jazzcats studio—where labelmates like Hanni El Khatib and the Molochs recorded with producer Jonny Bell—they had more than twenty songs nearly fully finished\, trimmed to their most necessary components and rehearsed only enough to sharpen the original inspiration. That was the most important part\, says Jeffords\, to capture that ecstatic lightning-strike instant that sparked a song in the first place\, and to make sure it never fizzled out. “If we didn’t have that feeling\,” he adds\, “the song would have never made it out of the rehearsal studio.” \n\n\n\nTheir last full-length was about energy\, says Jeffords\, an echo of the helicopters that shook the walls in his old apartment and the car crashes in the street. New Chants would be darker in tone and color\, he thought—about people and their machines\, and the blurring relationship between them. Like the way you can sometimes see your reflection in a TV screen—maybe you lose track of where the media starts and you begin. If “Fourth Walls” didn’t make it obvious\, the black border around their cover art does: Traps PS knows there’s always a frame around the image. \n\n\n\nThis is where the real spirit of that first wave of post-punk is at work on New Chants. It’s that uneasiness with the future and the unpredictable effects it brings\, and an effort to make an unpredictable new music to meet it. (Possibly related: there’s actually one of the Jazzcats studio cats playing piano on this album\, but not where you’d think.) New Chants is an album about watching and being watched\, about white noise and negative space\, about how what’s undone or unplayed or unsaid is just as deliberate and meaningful as everything else. Jeffords even perforated his lyrics sheet with “…” ellipses—negative space in the language itself. \n\n\n\nSo think Wire’s precision minimalism\, antidote to the over-the-top spectacle of punk and pop both. You’ll hear it in “Seven Voices” or the album’s title track. Think Public Image and that caustic\, corrosive—and purer for it—dissonance. You’ll hear it in “Two Truths\,” with its ragged semi-chorus of “Emmmmmmbrace …” Think the Contortions\, who tore out everything in their songs except the rhythm and discovered there wasn’t much else they’d needed anyway\, except for some saxophone used more as flamethrower than musical instrument. You’ll hear that as “Fourth Walls” falls in on itself. And then think about Traps PS\, who thought about what they didn’t need and then threw it out\, and who made an album only out of what they felt mattered most: “Let it be what it is\,” says Jeffords. New Chants is barely twenty minutes long—but it’s got everything.
