Love & Special SauceG. Love & Special Sauce is an American Hip-Hop Blues band known for its unique fusion of hip-hop\, blues\, funk\, and soul. Formed in 1993 in Philadelphia\, Pennsylvania\, the band originally featured Garrett Dutton\, aka G. Love\, as the lead vocalist and guitarist\, Jeffrey Clemens on drums\, and Jim Prescott on bass. The trio quickly gained attention for their laid-back\, groovy style and G. Love’s unique vocal delivery\, blending rap-like spoken word with bluesy singing. \n\n\n\nTheir debut self-titled album\, G. Born in Southern California\, Donavon spent most of his youth chasing waves\, turning pro at the age of 16. \n\n\n\nThese days instead of surf competitions\, it’s concert halls that bring Frankenreiter to town\, where he entertains audiences with his unique blend of laid-back grooves\, philosophical lyrics and soulful delivery. \n\n\n\nFrankenreiter released his first studio in 9 years on September 20\, 2024. The album\, entitled Get Outta Your Mind\, marks the 20 year anniversary of his self-titled debut album.

Married since 1999\, these two soulmates\, equally steeped in the musical roots of blues\, jazz\, and gospel\, had finally decided the time was right to set aside their successful solo careers and commit to a new band melding their vision and talent. It wasn’t the first time they had collaborated; they had shared a stage countless times and traded album guest appearances\, all while starting a family together. But on that night\, hitting the stage together with members of the Derek Trucks Band and a guest horn section they heard the future. \n\n\n\n“The 12-piece outfit puts out a big band sound that still rings intimate\, shaking listeners to their emotional core.” – Rolling Stone \n\n\n\nTwo years later\, the couple debuted Tedeschi Trucks Band. The nation’s economy was heading into recession. The popular music landscape was filled with technological theatrics and auto-tuned singers. And here were Tedeschi and Trucks along with their (then) 8-member band\, loading up two tour buses and hitting the road with a sound that defied conventional genre boundaries or traditional labels; a gypsy caravan on the rock-and-roll highway. To call it ambitious was an understatement. \n\n\n\n“They’re a roots-music tour de force\, and there’s a strong case to be made that they’ve been America’s best band of the decade.” – Austin American Statesman \n\n\n\nIn pursuit of their ideal sound driven by world class musicianship\, Tedeschi and Trucks put together a musical collaborative like no other\, flying in the face of any practical or economic considerations. There have been evolutionary changes to the band along the way\, but the current line up includes the freight-train force of drummers Tyler Greenwell and Isaac Eady\, long-time Derek Trucks Band member Mike Mattison\, with his dynamic vocals and songwriting skills\, Brandon Boone (bass guitar)\, Gabe Dixon (keyboards)\, the three-piece horn section of Kebbi Williams (saxophone)\, Ephraim Owens (trumpet)\, and Elizabeth Lea (trombone)\, and Mark Rivers and Alecia Chakour on vocal duties with Mattison. In February 2019\, original band member and brilliant multi-instrumentalist Kofi Burbridge passed away\, leaving an indelible mark on TTB’s spirit and sound. \n\n\n\nOn the road for upwards of 200 days a year\, the TTB family has grown strong\, bonding over backyard BBQs and long bus rides\, all the while developing a growing repertoire of original material and paying homage to an extensive canon of influences ranging from Sly & the Family Stone\, Miles Davis and George Jones to Joe Cocker\, Nina Simone\, and even Indian sarod master Ali Akbar Khan. Embracing improvisation over convention\, and with set lists that change nightly\, the collective is adept at exploring almost any musical territory. The genuine respect within its ranks is evident on stage. Trucks’ masterful guitar skills and Tedeschi’s soaring vocals and bluesy guitar shine but don’t overpower the breadth of talent\, happily yielding the spotlight as needed in service of what the song deserves. \n\n\n\n“I saw them live and it was mind blowing. [Derek] has taken the guitar\, specifically slide guitar\, somewhere it has never been. His phrasing both with and without slide is uniquely his and just odd and jarring and exciting to listen to. [Susan] is an earnest blues player as well and her voice is astounding. The band was mind-blowing. They take a form that is arguably tired and turn it inside out with originality and musicianship and make it totally their own.” – Marc Maron \n\n\n\nTrucks and Tedeschi’s uncompromising vision has paid off. Now 12-members strong\, and with a catalog of seven albums and nearly a decade of steady touring in the U.S. and abroad\, Tedeschi Trucks Band carries a distinguished reputation earned from both audiences and critics as one of the premier live bands in the world. Sold-out multi-night runs at venerable venues like the Beacon Theatre\, Ryman Auditorium and Red Rocks Amphitheater are a testament to the can’t-miss concert experience fans have come to anticipate. The band’s own “Wheels of Soul” tour has become a sought-after summer experience across the country\, bringing TTB’s unique stew of upbeat rock and soul together on stage with a slew of guests\, sit ins\, and supporting bands that have included the late Sharon Jones\, Los Lobos  The Wood Brothers\, Hot Tuna and most recently Blackberry Smoke\, The Marcus King Band and Drive-By Truckers. \n\n\n\n“Epic is an overused word\, but if one contemporary rock band were to rightfully wear it\, the Tedeschi Trucks Band might be the ones.” – Santa Barbara Independent \n\n\n\nTTB’s most recent release\, Layla Revisited (Live At LOCKN’) featuring Trey Anastasio\, is a 2CD/3LP live recording of their “now-legendary” (Relix) performance of the classic Derek and the Dominos album. It  joins an impressive and growing discography that includes Signs (2019)\, Let Me Get By (2016)\, Made Up Mind (2013)\, and the Grammy-winning debut\, Revelator (2011) in addition to their earlier live releases\, the Grammy-nominated film/audio\, Live From The Fox Oakland (2017)\, and 2012’s Everybody’s Talkin’. \n\n\n\nIn the midst of the rare time off during the pandemic\, the band convened in the studio to write and record a wealth of new songs for a future studio album. As the recording progresses towards an expected release in 2022\, the album is growing into a unique and exciting conceptual project.  It’s clear that Trucks and Tedeschi have no intention of slowing down. As Trucks remarked to Mark Maron on his WTF podcast “I haven’t found this band’s ceiling yet.” For Tedeschi Trucks Band\, there may not be one.

The band\, comprised of Dillon Basse (lead vocals\, guitar)\, Tristan Duncan (lead guitar)\, Mitch Fountain (synth\, guitar)\, Madeline Jarman (bass)\, and Devon VonBalson (drums)\, grew steadily with every gig\, from college house shows in their home state of Florida to festival appearances at Bonnaroo\, Lollapalooza\, and Austin City Limits\, to national recognition from Jimmy Kimmel Live\, ABC News\, and The Washington Post – earning the Jacksonville-based band an international reputation as an indie rock powerhouse. Caught halfway between 21st century indie rock\, New Wave-inspired nostalgia\, and rhythmic alt-pop\, Burnout Days finds the beauty that exists between five friends\, even in times of burnout. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Sun RoomBorn and raised in SoCal’s surf-rock scene\, Sun Room (Luke Asgian\, Ashton Minnich and Max Pinamonti) quickly went from getting the cops called on them for playing too loudly at house shows to performing their music in sold out rooms across dozens of countries. \n\n\n\nAfter a series of unexpected viral moments\, two of their songs were included on the hit Netflix series ‘Outer Banks’ which continued the wave of excitement online. Within just six months of the band forming\, Sun Room went on to sell out a run of shows across the US\, support Louis Tomlinson’s North and South American tours\, and support Inhaler in Europe. \n\n\n\nMaking their way back to the US in Fall 2022\, Sun Room embarked on their first headline tour across North America\, selling over 13\,000 tickets. Getting back on the road in Spring 2023\, the band toured the US with Inhaler\, then went straight into their own headline run. \n\n\n\nAfter returning home to San Diego for the summer\, Sun Room finished their EP At Least I Tried — A 4 track EP produced by Zac Carper from FIDLAR\, one of the band’s biggest influences growing up in the California DIY scene. The project was met with great responses from the public\, scoring playlist covers across DSPs\, a highlight from Iggy Pop on BBC6 and DIY Mag describing them as “a band so unashamedly indebted to the garage rock’n’ roll of decades past…” The project dropped as the band kicked off their second headline tour across all of North America\, playing in over 30 cities\, before finally jetting off to Australia for a headline tour and series of festivals from December 2023 to January 2024. \n\n\n\nComing off a headline run and festival circuit in Spring 2024\, Sun Room has most recently released their EP Can’t Explain following the singles “Hate It When You Call” and “Get Me Outta New York City.” The EP arrives just before the band is set to join Dayglow on his fall headline tour for 20+ dates across the US. \n\n\n\nIn 2023\, Sun Room gained over 500k followers across social media with a steady flow of global listeners that continue to grow as they experiment with their sound\, play in new cities\, and pull influences from the unique experiences they have encountered in just three years of being a band.

This time ultimately traces a trajectory of self-realization\, acceptance\, and accountability. Kitchen Dwellers embark on a similar odyssey over the course of their fourth full-length offering\, Seven Devils. The Montana quartet—Shawn Swain [Mandolin]\, Torrin Daniels [Banjo]\, Joe Funk [Upright Bass]\, and Max Davies [Acoustic Guitar]—thread together an immersive and inimitable conceptual arc inspired by Dante’s Inferno and set to a soundtrack of folk-infused bluegrass spiked with psychedelic vision and rock energy. \n\n\n\nContinuing their own journey as brothers\, they deliver their most ambitious and anthemic body of work yet. \n\n\n\n“These tunes deal with the human experience\, and Torrin initially drew a parallel between the music and Dante\,” Max states. “We explored the connection by correlating each song with a sin. Some of these connections are only apparent if you dive deep into the lyrics. Our goal is to essentially take the listener through our own interpretation of the Inferno story.” \n\n\n\n“We didn’t go into the studio with the intent of making a concept album\,” recalls Torrin. “I was driving around listening to everything\, and I noticed these parallels. To dive deeper\, we’re discussing topics like mental health\, the human condition\, and what we go through on the road. In life and music\, everything is recurring and universal. I was reading Dante at the time\, and it naturally fit.” \n\n\n\nIt proved to be a logical next step as well… \n\n\n\nThus far\, Kitchen Dwellers have engaged and enraptured listeners with albums such as Ghost In The Bottle [2017]\, Muir Maid [2019]\, Live from the Wilma [2021]\, and Wise River [2022]. Of the latter\, Holler. praised how “Kitchen Dwellers have preserved their sense of youthful experimentation\,” and Relix proclaimed\, “The songs on the new record build on this range\, while also reflecting on the group’s Bozeman\, Montana home.” Between tallying millions of streams\, the band ignited hallowed venues such as Red Rocks Amphitheatre and graced the bills of Telluride Bluegrass\, Northwest String Summit\, WinterWonderGrass\, and beyond. \n\n\n\nIn order to bring Seven Devils to life\, the musicians opted to work with producer Glenn Brown. It would not only mark their first time collaborating with the producer\, but it also would be the first time they decamped to Michigan in order to record. \n\n\n\n“The studio itself definitely impacted the vibe\,” Torrin notes. “It’s a tiny workspace\, but it’s full of old recording equipment with legendary stories attached to it. For almost the entire time\, we were forced to congregate in this room together. The process was ever-evolving\, because ideas kept flowing.” \n\n\n\nFittingly\, “Seven Devils (Limbo)” opens the album and serves as the first single. Nimbly picked banjo and upbeat acoustic guitar set the pace as the regretful chorus bemoans\, “Am I supposed to hop the next train? Or stand here drowning in the Oregon rain?” A guitar-driven bridge dips in and out of effects-laden echoes and stark strumming. Coming full circle\, a ten-minute version of “Seven Devils” later bookends the record with an epic finale. \n\n\n\n“I incorporated some elements of grunge in terms of the chords\, which are a little dissonant\,” Torrin elaborates. “Thematically\, it’s the descent into Hell. First\, Dante goes through limbo before reaching any of the circles where the cardinal sins are addressed. ‘Seven Devils’  evokes the feeling of being in limbo.” \n\n\n\n“It also signifies you’re embarking on some type of journey\,” Max agrees. “By the end of the LP\, you know the protagonist isn’t going to be the same person.” \n\n\n\nThen\, there’s “The Crow and The Raven (III).” The track’s emotionally charged vocals seesaw on top of strings in a moment of terse reflection. “I went through a horrible breakup in 2018 when I wrote the first version\,” Shawn remembers. “‘The Crow and The Raven (III)’ sat in my notebook for a half-decade before we revamped it. Now\, it’s a sad\, slower lament about enduring the loss of a relationship.” \n\n\n\n“Pendulum” rushes towards a mournful refrain offset by a plucky crescendo. “It’s about dealing with an addiction in your life and how it affects relationships\,” Joe says. “People often trade one addiction for another\, whether positive or detrimental to their life\, as a means to satisfy their baseline addictive tendencies.” \n\n\n\nOn the other end of the spectrum\, “Here We Go (VI)” laments the epidemic of shootings in America with unfiltered frustration projected through a powerful ebb and flow punctuated by a cameo from Lindsay Lou. \n\n\n\n“I was riding a Greyhound from Seattle to Missoula in 2012\,” Max goes on. “There had just been another school shooting. It’s terrible to think of how many shootings have happened since. Why is this happening? The chorus shifts gears to miscommunication between two parties in a relationship. Those are the two driving forces.” \n\n\n\nAn electric guitar lead heralds the onset of “Unwind (Paradiso)\,” building towards one climactic moment of catharsis. \n\n\n\n“A psychedelic experience and life-changing ego death changed my outlook on many things\,” Torrin admits. “‘Unwind (Paradiso)’ was one of those moments where you surrender and let it take you. You’re letting go of the human things in your brain that make you want to fight or cause you to be afraid. It also came together in the studio as a band\, which was super cool.” \n\n\n\nIn the end\, Kitchen Dwellers may just leave you changed with Seven Devils. \n\n\n\n“The record is a trip inward within the self\,” Torrin concludes. “It tackles a lot of things in the world people try not to think about. The reality is we’re only truly happy when happiness comes from within. As a result\, Country music was something Nick’s dad covered up—along with the poverty and corresponding shame of his past. “I had no sense of identity as far as place\,” the artist admits. Lately\, the father and son began talking about the past and sharing Country tunes—exchanging culture and heritage. As an understanding of his DNA developed\, perhaps the twang and American in Medium Build’s songs stood out. However\, his Country is something unsurprisingly personal. “It feels self-soothing\,” Nick says of the opener\, “Beach Chair\,” which is a love letter to self in a time of need. “Crying Over U” is deeply specific but conjures emotions in us all—when confronted by closure and what remains in the rearview.Written on the road\, Country was fittingly recorded on Nashville’s Music Row. The album explores multiplicity—love\, queerness\, Mexican American and Chicanx identity\, family\, intimacy\, yearning\, loneliness—and chronicles a period of struggle and growth for Mendoza Ramos as a person and artist. \n\n\n\nLucha was born out of isolation at the advent of COVID-19 lockdowns\, beginning with a cover of Hank Williams’ “I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry\,” and following Mendoza Ramos as she moved from Portland\, Oregon to Mexico City\, returning to her parents’ home country while revisiting a lineage marred by violence and silence\, and simultaneously reaching towards deeper relationships with loved ones and herself. The album reflects “another tier of facing vulnerability\,” as Mendoza Ramos explains\, and is a battle cry to fight in order to be seen and to be accepted\, if not celebrated\, in every form—anger and compassion\, externally and internally\, individually and societally. As much as la lucha is about inner work\, fighting is borne from survival stemming from social structures designed to uplift dominant groups at the hands of suffering amongst the marginalized. \n\n\n\nWhile peeling back layers of the past to better understand the present has been integral to this period of growth for Mendoza Ramos\, time\, trauma\, and history can feel like interconnected\, abysmal loops and music has remained a trusted space for Mendoza Ramos to process\, experiment\, and channel her learnings into a creative practice. In this way\, Lucha has become cyclical\, documenting the parallel trust Mendoza Ramos has built with herself to allow the songs to guide how they should be sung\, or even sound. \n\n\n\n“I’ve been wanting to let whatever feels natural—with rhythm and musical instruments like congas and singing—to just let it be\, in the way that I’m trying to invoke in myself.” Lucha reflects on\, “the continuing process of learning how to exercise my producing skills\,” explains Mendoza Ramos. “I have so many words\, ideas to work with all the time\, and the hardest part for me has been learning to trust my gut. And figuring out how I work best\, and with who.” \n\n\n\nThe result is a collection as sonically sprawling and bold as its subject matter. On “La Lluvia de Guadalajara\,” Y La Bamba leans into a minimal\, avant-garde soundscape as Mendoza Ramos recites a spoken word poem. Later\, rhythms veer into bossa nova territory on “Hues ft. Devendra Banhart\,” a full-circle collaboration for Mendoza Ramos as she reminisces on the significance of finding Banhart’s work nearly two decades earlier: “He was the first young Spanish-speaking musician that wasn’t playing traditional Mexican music I heard when I was 21. There was nothing like it around that time.” \n\n\n\n“Nunca” is a warm\, wind-rich track dedicated to her mother\, Maria Elena Ramos whose poetry is published alongside the Lucha lyrics booklet. “I decided to put my mom’s poem\, which is a poem that she wrote to me\, letting me know how she felt\, exploring her heart in new ways she’s never imagined. Sharing it on the record is me paying attention that she’s expressing herself.” \n\n\n\nWhile each song holds personal significance to Mendoza Ramos\, part of growing into her identity as an artist has been allowing space for protection and boundaries\, and choosing to withhold some of that meaning from the public. Lucha is her own story of the complexity of trauma and nonlinear healing and growth processes\, but she imagines it is also the continuation of her ancestors’ stories and might also be a mirror to the story of others. “Even though I’m trying to fight\, I never want to demonize suffering\, because that’s part of growing. And it’s hard\, because we’re living in times where that [stigma] is what’s happening. So if this—me talking about my mental health and finding healing in my queerness—is a risk\, I hope that I find a community that protects it and protects me\, because they know I have their back. I am also trying to be my mom’s community.”

Boys & Girls earned the band multiple GRAMMY nominations and was hailed as one of the year’s best albums by numerous publications\, including Rolling Stone\, which also named lead single “Hold On” the #1 Best Song of 2012. Soon after its release\, the bandmates found themselves thrust into the global spotlight\, achieving such milestones as performing at the White House and on “Saturday Night Live.” \n\n\n\nThe band’s legacy continued to grow with the groundbreaking Sound & Color (ATO Records). Sound & Color marked a profound evolution from Alabama Shakes’ debut album\, as The New York Times Magazine observed\, heralding the band’s “soul-stirring\, shape-shifting new sound.” Both Sound & Color and Boys & Girls were certified Platinum by the RIAA. \n\n\n\nThe Shakes’ Cockrell\, Fogg\, & Howard have also reunited in the studio promising new music to fans who have been eagerly awaiting their return. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Y La BambaTo declare one thematic narrative from Lucha\, Y La Bamba’s seventh album\, would be to chisel away a story within a story within a story into the illusion of something singular. \n\n\n\n“Lucha is a symbol of how hard it is for me to tackle healing\, live life\, and be present\,” Luz Elena Mendoza Ramos\, lead vocalist and producer of Y La Bamba\, says of the title behind the album which translates from Spanish to English as ‘fight’ and is also a nickname for Luz\, which means light. The album explores multiplicity—love\, queerness\, Mexican American and Chicanx identity\, family\, intimacy\, yearning\, loneliness—and chronicles a period of struggle and growth for Mendoza Ramos as a person and artist. \n\n\n\nLucha was born out of isolation at the advent of COVID-19 lockdowns\, beginning with a cover of Hank Williams’ “I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry\,” and following Mendoza Ramos as she moved from Portland\, Oregon to Mexico City\, returning to her parents’ home country while revisiting a lineage marred by violence and silence\, and simultaneously reaching towards deeper relationships with loved ones and herself. The album reflects “another tier of facing vulnerability\,” as Mendoza Ramos explains\, and is a battle cry to fight in order to be seen and to be accepted\, if not celebrated\, in every form—anger and compassion\, externally and internally\, individually and societally. As much as la lucha is about inner work\, fighting is borne from survival stemming from social structures designed to uplift dominant groups at the hands of suffering amongst the marginalized. \n\n\n\nWhile peeling back layers of the past to better understand the present has been integral to this period of growth for Mendoza Ramos\, time\, trauma\, and history can feel like interconnected\, abysmal loops and music has remained a trusted space for Mendoza Ramos to process\, experiment\, and channel her learnings into a creative practice. In this way\, Lucha has become cyclical\, documenting the parallel trust Mendoza Ramos has built with herself to allow the songs to guide how they should be sung\, or even sound. \n\n\n\n“I’ve been wanting to let whatever feels natural—with rhythm and musical instruments like congas and singing—to just let it be\, in the way that I’m trying to invoke in myself.” Lucha reflects on\, “the continuing process of learning how to exercise my producing skills\,” explains Mendoza Ramos. “I have so many words\, ideas to work with all the time\, and the hardest part for me has been learning to trust my gut. And figuring out how I work best\, and with who.” \n\n\n\nThe result is a collection as sonically sprawling and bold as its subject matter. On “La Lluvia de Guadalajara\,” Y La Bamba leans into a minimal\, avant-garde soundscape as Mendoza Ramos recites a spoken word poem. Later\, rhythms veer into bossa nova territory on “Hues ft. Devendra Banhart\,” a full-circle collaboration for Mendoza Ramos as she reminisces on the significance of finding Banhart’s work nearly two decades earlier: “He was the first young Spanish-speaking musician that wasn’t playing traditional Mexican music I heard when I was 21. There was nothing like it around that time.” \n\n\n\n“Nunca” is a warm\, wind-rich track dedicated to her mother\, Maria Elena Ramos whose poetry is published alongside the Lucha lyrics booklet. “I decided to put my mom’s poem\, which is a poem that she wrote to me\, letting me know how she felt\, exploring her heart in new ways she’s never imagined. Sharing it on the record is me paying attention that she’s expressing herself.” \n\n\n\nWhile each song holds personal significance to Mendoza Ramos\, part of growing into her identity as an artist has been allowing space for protection and boundaries\, and choosing to withhold some of that meaning from the public. Lucha is her own story of the complexity of trauma and nonlinear healing and growth processes\, but she imagines it is also the continuation of her ancestors’ stories and might also be a mirror to the story of others. “Even though I’m trying to fight\, I never want to demonize suffering\, because that’s part of growing. And it’s hard\, because we’re living in times where that [stigma] is what’s happening. So if this—me talking about my mental health and finding healing in my queerness—is a risk\, I hope that I find a community that protects it and protects me\, because they know I have their back. I am also trying to be my mom’s community.”

Bigger than ever\, playing to fans spanning multiple generations\, and in the midst of their most creative purple patch. A brand new album – titled The Night the Zombies Came – marks the group’s tenth studio record (if you count 1987’s Come On Pilgrim). 13 new songs that will arrive aptly in time for Halloween amongst a 2024 touring schedule taking in circa 70 shows across the globe – and even more to be announced in 2025. \n\n\n\nSpend an hour or two in the company of Charles Thompson IV\, and the conversation will soon fall to zombies\, bog people\, Druidism\, medieval theme restaurants\, shopping malls\, the Masons\, surf rock and the practice of slaughtering lambs in Monmouthshire. Along the way\, he might take in Shirley Collins\, the distinctive dry drum sound of 1970s’ Fleetwood Mac\, and the sestina\, a poetic form attributed to the 12th century Provencal troubadour Arnaut Daniel.  \n\n\n\nOut of such disparate wonders are Pixies’ albums made. “Fragments that are related\,” as Thompson (better known as Black Francis) puts it. “And juxtaposed with other fragments in other songs. And in a collection of songs in a so-called LP\, you end up making a kind of movie.” \n\n\n\nSince their earliest days in late 80s’ Massachusetts\, and on past their 2004 reformation\, Pixies have worked this way — proclaiming their love for both Hüsker Dü and Peter\, Paul and Mary\, relishing both loud and quiet\, singing somewhat kaleidoscopically of reincarnation\, scuba diving\, Luis Buñuel\, necromancy\, Samson and Delilah and the 1986 comedy drama Crimes of the Heart. From the start their music has been imagistic\, contradictory\, electrifying. They stand as one of the most influential\, revered and deeply adored bands of all time. \n\n\n\nThe juxtaposed fragments that make up this year’s The Night the Zombies Came are perhaps the most cinematic of their career — gothic meets sci-fi shlock\, horror flicks\, dark folk tales and Ennio Morricone westerns. \n\n\n\nEarly on\, the band noticed the songs were dividing into two camps: what they came to call the ‘Dust Bowl Songs’ — country-tinged\, ballad-esque numbers such as Primrose and Mercy Me\, and on the other side\, the album’s furious punk numbers such as You’re So Impatient and Chicken. Only Jane (the Night the Zombies Came) keeps its feet in both camps — reminiscent of early 60s Phil Spector\, the band hitting the sweet spot between mushy and abrasive\, it’s a track that Thompson allegedly likened to being chased by a swarm of bees. \n\n\n\nFor this outing\, the band returned to work with producer Tom Dalgety\, who has steered Pixies since 2016’s Head Carrier and on through 2019’s Beneath the Eyrie and 2022’s Doggerel\, and whom Thompson refers to as “a good master of a lot of information” and drummer David Lovering calls “a fifth Pixie now.” \n\n\n\nOver the course of the last three records\, they have established a rhythm with Dalgety: the producer heading to Thompson’s house in Massachusetts a week before recording to familiarise himself with the new songs\, sitting in his front room with a laptop\, while the singer strums out a few ideas. “I really love that process\,” Dalgety says. “From a professional\, productive side of things it’s really nice to get to know the songs and experiment. But also from a geeky fan point of view it’s quite cool being sat on the sofa and seeing ten Pixies songs just suddenly unfold in front of you.” \n\n\n\nFrom there\, the band reconvened once again at Guilford Sound studio in Vermont\, sharing a house together\, rehearsing in the living room\, walking through the autumn woods each day to the studio to record. The hours were not relentless. When the sun went down\, Thompson notes\, they could still go howl at the moon. \n\n\n\nBut they used their time wisely and often experimentally. For several records now\, Thompson has been chasing a different sound for the drums — not the expansive boom of the expensive studio live room with its perfect acoustics and high-end microphones\, but something deader and drier and more akin to the records he loved from the early 1970s.  \n\n\n\nFor a couple of Zombies’ tracks — Chicken and Mercy Me\, Lovering and Dalgety relented. The producer set up a small drum kit in a small room\, deadened the drum skins with cloth and gaffer tape. “And they stuff David in there\,” recalls Thompson. “And you know\, climbing in and out of it is sort of like climbing in and out of a fish aquarium. And it probably gets warm in there. So I’m sure that he suffered for my dry drum sound. I don’t know if there was blood\, but there was definitely a lot of sweat. And maybe some tears.” \n\n\n\nLovering is diplomatic. “Compact would be the word for it\,” he says. “Everything was just nice and muffled the way I like to hear it. And if you listen now\, it is concise\, you hear the drums much more\, they’re not as open and brash or arena style. They’re just right there\, and it makes for a different kind of sound.” \n\n\n\nThere were other changes\, too. A line-up shift has brought in bassist Emma Richardson (Band of Skulls)\, and with it\, a different quality to the band’s sound. Thompson praises the restrained elegance of her voice. Dalgety speaks of her “fantastic creative vibe”. Lovering describes her as “a consummate bass player.”  \n\n\n\nThe recent tour\, of which Richardson was a part\, was particularly joyful for the drummer. “I think the response to these shows and the way that we’ve been playing is because of the rhythm section\,” he says. “Of course I’m up there\, but Emma is up there with me. And when the rhythm section is locked on\, and laying it down with power\, Joe and Charles can screw off as much as they want. She’s just killing it.” \n\n\n\nFor Richardson\, the invitation to join Pixies was a huge and unexpected compliment. She spent weeks exploring the band’s back catalogue ahead of the live shows\, trying to understand their magic.“They have this amazing way of making something that is quite a complicated arrangement sound really effortless and very succinct\,” she says. “But actually when you’re picking it apart as a musician you realise all the tricks that they use. How cleverly they form songs and structures and lyrics.” \n\n\n\nThe new record is particularly special to her. “It’s incredible. It feels slightly different from anything they’ve done before. It’s got this brilliant mixture of a knowing nostalgia and a punk\, energetic\, fun element. But it’s got this dark underbelly\, and an almost romantic longing feel to it. They’ve created these little worlds which are quite cerebral and dreamlike\, but it’s also got these big vistas. It’s quite cinematic.” \n\n\n\nZombies also marks an expanded role for guitarist Joey Santiago. The track I Hear You Mary began as an instrumental he wrote for the previous album\, and having also contributed his first lyrics on Doggerel\, on this record\, Thompson set Santiago the task of writing the words to Hypnotised by completing a sestina — a lyrical riddle of sorts\, formed of six stanzas of six lines\, in which words are rotated in a set pattern. Santiago\, startled by the responsibility\, set about labouring over a complex set of lyrics before coming to a realisation: “The truth of the matter is you’re just putting fucking words together. The lesson is just not to be precious. Just fucking do it.” \n\n\n\nIn recent years\, Santiago has also sought to learn more about guitar playing — aware\, he says\, that it might help conquer his long-running imposter syndrome. “I was afraid\, kinda\, that I was going to lose my identity if I started studying it\, but it made my studio experience a lot easier\,” he says. For months\, he found himself following the Youtube algorithm as it guided him through intensive tutorials. “Every musician will tell you that it’s a never ending thing\,” he says. “It’s pretty remarkable that there are 12 notes and there are still possibilities out there.” \n\n\n\nLovering\, too\, has been deep in pursuit of self-improvement. “I find that the only time I get better or change or learn new things is just by playing and playing and playing\,” he says. “It’s taken me 50 years to learn how to play the drums\, and I mean that honestly. In the last year I’ve learned the way to play off my right hand — I never did that in the past\, I was lazy as hell! And everything is like a clock now. So I’m excited not only with what we did with the record\, but for upcoming stuff. We’re going to sound good!” \n\n\n\nBack in the company of Thompson\, the conversation has moved on to headless chickens\, gargoyles\, the lingering presence of the undead. “When we’re putting together a record\,” he says\, “we’re not trying to make it fit around a particular theme\, but there may be a couple of catchphrases or words or concepts that are kicked around. On this particular record\, I would say it would be ‘zombies’. Though it’s not in every song\, and it’s not necessarily presented in a literal way.” \n\n\n\nOn every album they’ve ever made\, Pixies have taken the record’s title from the lyrics — a song title\, or a line. For a time\, Thompson says\, he struggled to find a title for this new collection of songs. “The only phrase that seemed to sound good to me is this one. Everything else seemed too goofy. You would think The Night the Zombies Came would be the most goofy-sounding\, but to my ear\, and to Tom’s also and to the rest of the band\, it felt like ‘Oh\, yeah\, The Night the Zombies Came. That’s it. Of course.” \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout SpoonSpoon\, Austin’s most esteemed rock ambassadors\, have released ten albums to date including a string of five straight top 10 records: Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga (2007)\, Transference (2010)\, They Want My Soul (2014)\, Hot Thoughts (2017)\, and Lucifer on the Sofa (2022). \n\n\n\nLucifer on the Sofa earned the band its first-ever GRAMMY nomination (Best Rock Album) and was praised by Rolling Stone as “The best thing they’ve ever done.” \n\n\n\nHailed by TIME as “one of the greatest American rock bands”\, Spoon topped Metacritic’s chart as the single most critically acclaimed band of the aughts. \n\n\n\nIn 2019\, Spoon released Everything Hits At Once: The Best of Spoon\, which was praised by NPR as a “convincing argument for Spoon being one of their era’s most distinctive and excellent rock bands.” That same year\, Fender released the Britt Daniel Signature Telecaster Thinline as part of their artist signature electric guitar series – highlighting the enduring influence of Daniel’s precision-punk style that has helped fuel Spoon to become what the Guardian calls ‘one of the finest bands of their generation.’ \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout FazerdazeIn a society where being strong and resilient is often held up like a badge of honour\, it’s much\, much harder to acknowledge when enough is enough – to accept when it’s time to let go. It’s a truth that New Zealand singer/producer/multi-instrumentalist Amelia Murray has spent years wrangling with\, but one whose story thankfully comes with an empowering punchline of personal reclamation in the form of ‘Break!’: her returning EP as Fazerdaze. \n\n\n\n“You can get so caught up in these false constructs of niceness and loyalty – these rigid societal constructs of what being a ‘good’ person’ is – but the best thing I did for myself was break free of that paradigm and ruthlessly start putting myself first\,” she begins. “This EP is a punctuation mark of that\, of being disruptive and severing from the false parts of myself.”

After moving to Los Angeles CA in 2012\, Crosby landed 2 songs (“This Old Town” and “Oh Love\, Oh Lord”) on the hit FX series Sons of Anarchy which has led to the band continually performing over 200 shows a year throughout the US and Europe. \n\n\n\nAdditionally\, Crosby spent 2015-16 on the road playing lead guitar for Widespread Panic song-writer Jerry Joseph\, as well as for Austin Texas road warriors Reckless Kelly in 2019. \n\n\n\nCrosby has co-written songs featured on Austin TX band Micky & The Motorcars recent release Long Time Comin’ and Reckless Kelly’s American Girls/American Jackpot. \n\n\n\nAfter spending 3 years based in Nashville TN\, Crosby has returned to Idaho and will continue to tour with his band full-time in support of his most recent release NORTHSTAR (APRIL 2020) and the current single “Runnin’ Free” (MAY 2021) feat. To some\, Hot Tuna is a reminder of some wild and happy times. To others\, that name will forever be linked to their own discovery of the power and depth of American blues and roots music. To newer fans\, Hot Tuna is a tight\, masterful duo that is on the cutting edge of great music. \n\n\n\nAll of those things are correct\, and more. For more than four decades\, Hot Tuna has played\, toured\, and recorded some of the best and most memorable acoustic and electric music ever. And Hot Tuna is still going strong — some would say stronger than ever. \n\n\n\nThe two kids from 1950s Washington\, D.C. knew that they wanted to make music. Jorma Kaukonen\, son of a State Department official\, and Jack Casady\, whose father was a dentist\, discovered guitar when they were teenagers (Jack\, four years younger\, barely so). They played\, and they took in the vast panorama of music available in the nation’s capital\, but found a special love of the blues\, country\, and jazz played in small clubs. \n\n\n\nJorma went off to college\, while Jack sat in with professional bands and combos before he was even old enough to drive\, first playing lead guitar\, then electric bass. \n\n\n\nIn the mid-1960s\, Jorma was invited to play in a rock‘n’roll band that was forming in San Francisco; he knew just the guy to play bass and summoned his old friend from back east. The striking signature guitar and bass riffs in the now-legendary songs by the Jefferson Airplane were the result. \n\n\n\nThe half-decade foray into 1960s San Francisco rock music was for Jack and Jorma an additional destination\, not the final one. They continued to play their acoustic blues on the side\, sometimes performing a mini-concert amid a Jefferson Airplane performance\, sometimes finding a gig afterward in some local club. They were\, as Jack says\, “Scouting\, always scouting\, for places where we could play.” \n\n\n\nThe duo did not go unnoticed\, and soon there was a record contract and not long afterward a tour. Thus began a career that would result in more than two-dozen albums\, thousands of concerts around the world\, and continued popularity. \n\n\n\nHot Tuna has gone through changes\, certainly. A variety of other instruments\, from harmonica to fiddle to keyboards\, have been part of the band over the years\, and continue to be\, varying from project to project. The constant\, the very definition of Hot Tuna\, has always been Jorma and Jack. \n\n\n\nThe two are not joined at the hip\, though; through the years\, both Jorma and Jack have undertaken projects with other musicians and solo projects of their own. But Hot Tuna has never broken up\, never ceased to exist\, nor have the two boyhood pals ever wavered in one of the most enduring friendships in music. \n\n\n\nAlong the way\, they have been joined by a succession of talented musicians: Drummers\, harmonica players\, keyboardists\, backup singers\, violinists and more\, all fitting with Jorma and Jack’s current place in the musical spectrum. Jorma and Jack certainly could not have imagined\, let alone predicted\, where the playing would take them. It’s been a long and fascinating road to numerous\, exciting destinations. Two things have never changed: They still love playing as much as they did as kids in Washington\, D.C. and there are still many\, many exciting miles yet to travel on their musical odyssey.
