DESCRIPTION:Grammy Award-winner Marty Stuart comes to Wachholz College Center on the FVCC campus in Kalispell with His Fabulous Superlatives at 7:30 pm Sunday\, July 26\n\n\n\n\n\nDoors @ 6:30 pm \n\n\n\nThe Wachholz College Center is pleased to welcome Marty Stuart and His Fabulous Superlatives back to the Flathead Valley. \n\n\n\nA Country Music Hall of Famer\, five-time Grammy Award-winner\, and AMA Lifetime Achievement honoree\, Stuart knows a thing or two about standing the test of time.  \n\n\n\nBorn and raised in Mississippi\, he landed his first big gig in Lester Flatts’ band at the tender age of thirteen\, and by twenty-one\, he was working on the road and in the studio with Johnny Cash.  \n\n\n\nThough Stuart built his early reputation backing up country and bluegrass royalty\, it wasn’t long before Nashville recognized him as a star in his own right\, and over the course of forty-plus years as a solo artist\, he would go on to release more than twenty major label albums\, scoring platinum sales\, hit singles\, and just about every honor the industry could bestow along the way. \n\n\n\nIn a career spanning over 50 years\, dozens of albums\, and too many shows to count\, Marty Stuart is still restless and pushing himself to new heights.  \n\n\n\nHe and The Superlatives’ most recent album release “Space Junk” showcases the inimitable interplay and bond between Marty and his longtime bandmates\, Kenny Vaughan\, Harry Stinson\, and Chris Scruggs.  \n\n\n\nThe album’s origins can be traced to Marty’s years composing music for film and television\, including the score for All The Pretty Horses\, which garnered a Golden Globe® Award nomination for “Best Original Score” and earned him GRAMMY® Awards in the category of “Best Country Instrumental Performance” for “Foggy Mountain Breakdown” and “Hummingbyrd.” \n\n\n\n“Scoring required a cinematic way of thinking.” reveals Marty. “I had to make music for what the scene called for\, which turned me into more of a visual player in an understated way. That kind of thinking followed me into the studio during the making of Space Junk. I knew the music had to be pretty\, but it also had to say something without losing its drive.”  \n\n\n\n“I hope Space Junk takes the listeners for a ride\,” he continues. “It makes me forget my problems and remember why I play guitar and get to dress up in cowboy clothes. It reminds me I’m okay\, and I want it to do the same for you. Mainly\, I want to inspire some kid to go to the store\, buy an instrument\, and make a difference. Old 97’s is an American alt-country band from Dallas\, formed in 1993. \n\n\n\nThe thirteenth studio album from Old 97’s\, American Primitive arose from what vocalist/guitarist Rhett Miller refers to as a “de-evolution” of the legendary Dallas-bred band.  \n\n\n\n“As much as I want us to calm down and grow up\, the songs that felt right for this record were mostly big and loud and brutal and dirty\,” says Miller\, whose bandmates include bassist Murry Hammond\, guitarist Ken Bethea\, and drummer Philip Peeples.  \n\n\n\nArriving just months before the 30th anniversary of Hitchhike to Rhome—a powerhouse debut that played a vital part in pioneering the alt-country genre—the result is a gloriously rowdy body of work\, revealing a veteran band more attuned than ever to the raw and reckless energy of truly timeless rock-and-roll. \n\n\n\nWith its title lifted from a bit of fictional art criticism in Stephen King’s psych-horror novel Duma Key\, American Primitive merges its unvarnished sound with the punchy yet poignant storytelling signature to Old 97’s\, radiating a rambunctious joy even as Miller’s lyrics contend with complex questions of love and mental illness and the routinely daunting state of the world.  \n\n\n\nProduced by Tucker Martine (My Morning Jacket\, The Decemberists\, Neko Case) and featuring iconic guest musicians like Peter Buck of R.E.M. and Scott McCaughey of The Young Fresh Fellows and The Minus 5\, the album took shape in a series of deliberately whirlwind sessions at Flora Studio in Portland\, Oregon.  \n\n\n\n“This was the first record we’ve ever done with zero pre-production\,” Miller points out. “It’s us working completely on instinct\, leaning on 30 years of playing together to come up with something on the fly rather than overthinking any of our choices.”

She then takes a pause\, the flurry of her guitar and her bandmates’ boisterous sounds fading out\, before she practically shouts\, with unbridled joy: “God I love being alive! “The words say so much. But in that pause — just a few seconds long — it’s as if she’s looking at everything that has happened in her life in the time since she last released an album of new material\, 2019’s The Medicine Show\, and with it everything that is to come on this remarkable\, emotional mosaic of songs. And it’s a lot.
