Dirty Heads also have over 2.4 million unique monthly listeners on Spotify. \n\n\n\nThe band’s global appeal reached new heights in 2021\, when their hit “Vacation” (originally released in 2017) garnered over 6 billion views and streams across social media via the ubiquitous #VacationTransition challenge that originated organically with users on TikTok. \n\n\n\nThe group formed when punk rocker Dustin Bushnell (aka Duddy B) asked his friend\, rapper Jared Watson (aka Dirty J)\, to collaborate on a project that would focus on positive vibes and infectious grooves. Watson added singing to his vocal skills\, and later with percussionist Jon Olazabal\, drummer Matt Ochoa\, and bassist Dave Foral\, Dirty Heads began building an immense audience. \n\n\n\nIn 2008\, Dirty Heads released their acclaimed album Any Port in a Storm\, with a deluxe edition following in 2010. The song reached number one on Billboard‘s Alternative Songs in May 2010\, and nine weeks later it established a record as the song with the longest stint atop the chart for an independently released title. \n\n\n\nThey followed up two years later with Cabin by the Sea and later recorded an acoustic version of the title track. Caamp’s Lavender Days (2022) landed on NPR’s list of the year’s best roots albums\, topped the Americana Albums chart\, and earned the band their second and third #1 singles at AAA radio. In 2025\, the band released “And It’s Gone\,” written by Meier and featured as the theme song for the Apple TV+ series Stick\, starring Owen Wilson. \n\n\n\n“It’s so fun to just strike your guitar and let it echo through a room that size\,” says Westfall. “There’s something primal about it\, and while we never really consciously discussed it\, I think you can hear our sound growing to match the rooms we’re playing.” \n\n\n\nThough the band’s momentum seemed unstoppable in the wake of Lavender Days (to date\, they’ve amassed over 2.5 billion streams worldwide)\, Caamp’s 2025 U.S. headline tour reaffirmed their place as one of the most captivating live bands in modern music. The 33 show run sold over 200\,000 tickets and included sold-out nights at Fiddler’s Green Amphitheatre\, The Salt Shed (two nights)\, The Anthem (two nights)\, The Greek Theatre\, and Radio City Music Hall (two nights). \n\n\n\n“I’ve experienced so many different versions of myself these past few years\,” Meier reflects. “I’ve been focusing on healing and recovery while still processing a lot of grief and loss\, and it made me take stock of my head and my heart and my friends and my family and figure out what really matters.” \n\n\n\nAs Meier found himself embarking on new phases during this period — he turned thirty\, began splitting his time between central Ohio and the Lower East Side of Manhattan\, and fell in love with early-2000s indie bands like The Strokes — he also found himself recommitted and more grateful than ever for the steadfast connection he shared with his bandmates. \n\n\n\n“There’s just so much trust\,” says Meier. “We trust each other\, we trust the songs\, we trust the process. It allows us to work freely and push ourselves to places we haven’t been.” \n\n\n\nWhen it came time to record\, the band headed first to El Paso’s famed Sonic Ranch Studio\, where they tracked nearly 20 songs in just a week with Artola and drummer/longtime collaborator Josh Block (Leon Bridges\, White Denim). After a break\, the group headed to Portland’s Flora Recording to collaborate with Martine on another batch of tunes before finishing up with a final session at Manhattan’s Sear Sound. \n\n\n\n“There was no rush\,” says Vinson. “We knew we could take our time and enjoy just getting together in a room and seeing what happened when we took our sound to some uncharted places. There’s a live performance at the core of each of these tracks\, and I think that’s what ties this whole collection together.” \n\n\n\nThat live energy is obvious from the outset on Copper Changes Color\, which opens with the driving “Millions.” Punchy and magnetic\, the track shifts partway through from sunny garage rock to muscular Americana\, setting the stage perfectly for a record that boldly walks the line between genres while proudly wearing its heart on its sleeve. The lush “One True Way” (feat. Madi Diaz) questions whether anyone ever truly knows what they’re doing\, while the mesmerizing “Fairview Feeling” makes peace with our imperfections\, and the effervescent “Mistakes” lays its cards on the table\, with Meier singing\, “Can I get to know you\, honey / And all of your lovely mistakes / I’ve got more than a few to show you.” \n\n\n\n“I remember walking around when I first moved to New York and having all this dialogue in my head\,” he explains\, “but the streets were even more chaotic\, which slowed things down and allowed me to open up to the possibility of writing something really vulnerable. I found that the city scratches a different itch for me\, and I spent a lot of time there just walking around\, writing and rewriting verses and trying to go deeper than I ever have on this record.” \n\n\n\nDeep as Meier takes things\, he and the band never lose sight of life’s simple pleasures. The addictive “Porchswing” revels in the joys of a steady\, reliable love; the Britpop-tinged “Shade” pledges to always be there to pick up a partner’s slack; the exhilarating “Waiting Up (For You)” basks in the glow of a connection that transcends distance; and the tongue-in-cheek “Ohio’s Ugly” savors the feeling of sharing a place you love with someone you care about. \n\n\n\n“It’s a song about falling in love with a girl and wanting to pull her back to Ohio\,” Meier explains. “People don’t understand why we’re still here\, but anybody from the Midwest will tell you there’s a magic to it. I travel all over the world now\, but nothing beats coming home.” \n\n\n\nUltimately\, Copper Changes Color is all about that push and pull between old and new\, between the thrill of the unknown and the comforts of the familiar. “No one knows how long this lasts / Try and make it sweet\,” Meier sings on poignant album closer “Drive.” Change isn’t just inevitable\, it’s essential. After stepping back and reimagining his songwriting approach\, Nebeker challenged himself to write an entire album in a month\, then brought those songs to his bandmates with a newfound sense of receptivity. “I told myself that whatever songs came through in that month would be for the love of the band and music we make together\,” says Nebeker. “Instead of being controlling in the studio\, I wanted to let the songs live and breathe with the band as an entity. The 33 show run sold over 200\,000 tickets and included sold-out nights at Fiddler’s Green Amphitheatre\, The Salt Shed (two nights)\, The Anthem (two nights)\, The Greek Theatre\, and Radio City Music Hall (two nights). \n\n\n\n“I’ve experienced so many different versions of myself these past few years\,” Meier reflects. “I’ve been focusing on healing and recovery while still processing a lot of grief and loss\, and it made me take stock of my head and my heart and my friends and my family and figure out what really matters.” \n\n\n\nAs Meier found himself embarking on new phases during this period — he turned thirty\, began splitting his time between central Ohio and the Lower East Side of Manhattan\, and fell in love with early-2000s indie bands like The Strokes — he also found himself recommitted and more grateful than ever for the steadfast connection he shared with his bandmates. \n\n\n\n“There’s just so much trust\,” says Meier. “We trust each other\, we trust the songs\, we trust the process. It allows us to work freely and push ourselves to places we haven’t been.” \n\n\n\nWhen it came time to record\, the band headed first to El Paso’s famed Sonic Ranch Studio\, where they tracked nearly 20 songs in just a week with Artola and drummer/longtime collaborator Josh Block (Leon Bridges\, White Denim). After a break\, the group headed to Portland’s Flora Recording to collaborate with Martine on another batch of tunes before finishing up with a final session at Manhattan’s Sear Sound. \n\n\n\n“There was no rush\,” says Vinson. “We knew we could take our time and enjoy just getting together in a room and seeing what happened when we took our sound to some uncharted places. There’s a live performance at the core of each of these tracks\, and I think that’s what ties this whole collection together.” \n\n\n\nThat live energy is obvious from the outset on Copper Changes Color\, which opens with the driving “Millions.” Punchy and magnetic\, the track shifts partway through from sunny garage rock to muscular Americana\, setting the stage perfectly for a record that boldly walks the line between genres while proudly wearing its heart on its sleeve. The lush “One True Way” (feat. Madi Diaz) questions whether anyone ever truly knows what they’re doing\, while the mesmerizing “Fairview Feeling” makes peace with our imperfections\, and the effervescent “Mistakes” lays its cards on the table\, with Meier singing\, “Can I get to know you\, honey / And all of your lovely mistakes / I’ve got more than a few to show you.” \n\n\n\n“I remember walking around when I first moved to New York and having all this dialogue in my head\,” he explains\, “but the streets were even more chaotic\, which slowed things down and allowed me to open up to the possibility of writing something really vulnerable. I found that the city scratches a different itch for me\, and I spent a lot of time there just walking around\, writing and rewriting verses and trying to go deeper than I ever have on this record.” \n\n\n\nDeep as Meier takes things\, he and the band never lose sight of life’s simple pleasures. The addictive “Porchswing” revels in the joys of a steady\, reliable love; the Britpop-tinged “Shade” pledges to always be there to pick up a partner’s slack; the exhilarating “Waiting Up (For You)” basks in the glow of a connection that transcends distance; and the tongue-in-cheek “Ohio’s Ugly” savors the feeling of sharing a place you love with someone you care about. \n\n\n\n“It’s a song about falling in love with a girl and wanting to pull her back to Ohio\,” Meier explains. “People don’t understand why we’re still here\, but anybody from the Midwest will tell you there’s a magic to it. I travel all over the world now\, but nothing beats coming home.” \n\n\n\nUltimately\, Copper Changes Color is all about that push and pull between old and new\, between the thrill of the unknown and the comforts of the familiar. “No one knows how long this lasts / Try and make it sweet\,” Meier sings on poignant album closer “Drive.” Change isn’t just inevitable\, it’s essential. With three candidates for national player of the year at marquee positions\, Montana has NFL-caliber talent on both sides of the ball. \n\n\n\nBut the Griz also have new faces all over the field and a new defensive scheme to operate under after an offseason of change. It tees up an intriguing mix of new and old\, with a robust eight returning all-conference players but at the same time the need to replace 33 lettermen and 21 starters. \n\n\n\nHere to challenge Kennedy’s Grizzlies in his first game is a new and old opponent in Southern Utah\, who won two Big Sky titles during their time in the league from 2012-2022. She continues to work on safe energy issues in addition to environmental protection\, social justice\, Native American and human rights\, as well as artist’s rights and music education. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Jon Cleary \n\n\n\nAfter thirty-five years of being at the forefront of the ever-evolving musical landscape of New Orleans\, two-time Grammy award winner Jon Cleary decided to bring that sound back home\, both figuratively and literally. He assembled his Absolute Monster Gentlemen (his acclaimed all-star big band) in his home studio in the Bywater neighborhood of New Orleans\, drew up a setlist of some of his most beloved songs– and some new favorites– and rolled tape. \n\n\n\n“We set out to capture that sound in the old-fashioned way: everybody in the room\, playing together\,” Cleary explains. \n\n\n\nThe result is The Bywater Sessions\, a musical tour-de-force that showcases the grit\, funk and joy that’s packed concert halls from New Orleans to Tokyo and beyond. Co-produced by Cleary and John Porter (Roxy Music\, The Smiths\, Taj Mahal)\, it’s a stunning collection of performances that affirms Cleary’s place in the New Orleans musical vanguard. \n\n\n\n“There’s a lot to be said for the ‘lean and mean’ sound of a piano trio\, stripped down to basics\, simple and direct\,” Cleary says. “But recently\, I’ve been experimenting with different combinations; adding horns\, guitar\, percussion and even another keyboard player. This expanded line-up has allowed the arrangements to blossom in new directions.” \n\n\n\nAs for the musicians\, it’s the best of the best. Long time Monster Gentlemen Cornell Williams and A.J. Hall anchor the band on bass and drums\, respectively. They are joined by Nigel Hall (Lettuce) on Hammond organ\, Pedro Segundo (Ronnie Scott’s All Stars) on percussion\, Xavier Lynn (MonoNeon\, Ledisi) on guitar\, and an all-star horn section of Aaron Narcisse (Delfeayo Marsalis & the Uptown Jazz Orchestra)\, Charlie Halloran (Squirrel Nut Zippers\, Preservation Hall All Stars) and Jason Mingledorff (Galactic). \n\n\n\n“Sophisticated\, nasty\, good-time\, low-down funk is the folk music of New Orleans\,” Cleary says. “Everyone playing on this recording is a New Orleanian by birth or by choice\, having learned their craft at the feet of the masters who in turn were taught by the old lions in their day – it’s a tradition stretching back over two hundred years. The roots go deep\, but each generation\, growing up with street parades and second-lines\, absorbs the old and introduces the new\, gently coaxing the essential essence into and out of each succeeding decade.” \n\n\n\nIt’s an apt description of Cleary’s career thus far. Born in London and on a plane to New Orleans before he turned twenty years old\, he grew up absorbed by the sounds and rhythms of the Crescent City. His mastery of the city’s music landed him gigs playing as a session musician in the bands of local legends Earl King\, Johnny Adams\, Walter ‘Wolfman’ Washington\, Snooks Eaglin\, Ernie K-Doe\, Jessie Hill– and as a guitarist for Dr. John. He later toured extensively with icons like Bonnie Raitt and Taj Mahal. His solo career began in earnest in 1989 and includes beloved records like their self-titled band debut and his 2015 Grammy winner\, Go-Go Juice. \n\n\n\nIn fact\, his first job in New Orleans was as a painter at beloved local club the Maple Leaf Bar\, and it wasn’t long until he was playing piano in that very room. To this day\, he and his band continue to pack that room to crowds that gather from around the world\, playing their unique and ever-evolving take on New Orleans funk and R&B. \n\n\n\n“These grooves are not museum pieces\, they are alive\, breathing and fresh – and that’s why joints like Tipitina’s\, The Maple Leaf Bar and Chickie Wah Wah are always packed when the locals\, young and old\, come out to hear the Gentlemen do they thang\,” Cleary proudly adds. \n\n\n\nOn The Bywater Sessions\, the band that Rolling Stone’s David Fricke called “as broad\, deep and rolling as the Mississippi river” is finally captured as intended– live\, in the room and as funky as ever. The feral nature of new/old pals spanking drums\, diming the mids on old amps\, noodling to remove the death capacitor on the march toward nothing/everything. And like the Minutemen\, sixty seconds of Traps PS hits harder and resonates longer than five-ten-twenty sloppy minutes from somebody else. Or like Gang of Four\, who got it from James Brown\, who is a fundamental Traps PS inspiration—Traps PS cares about discipline\, rhythm and clarity. Says drummer Miles Wintner: “We don’t waste time.” \n\n\n\nThey’ve always been unafraid to do what needed to be done\, this practically telepathic trio of Wintner\, bassist/backing vocalist Danny Miller and singer/guitarist Andrew Jeffords. They recorded and released records on their community-oriented/community-involved label Papermade and played any space they’d fit—lost all ages institutions like L.A.’s Pehrspace or not-exactly legal “guerilla” shows on city streets and in dusty Inglewood oil fields. But with their first full-length in three years coming into focus\, they found L.A. independent label Innovative Leisure ready to amplify that DIY capability: “We’ve done so much in our own bubble that it was exciting to explore another aspect\,” says Jeffords. “I’m enjoying inviting people into our family.” \n\n\n\nBy the time they walked into Long Beach’s Jazzcats studio—where labelmates like Hanni El Khatib and the Molochs recorded with producer Jonny Bell—they had more than twenty songs nearly fully finished\, trimmed to their most necessary components and rehearsed only enough to sharpen the original inspiration. That was the most important part\, says Jeffords\, to capture that ecstatic lightning-strike instant that sparked a song in the first place\, and to make sure it never fizzled out. “If we didn’t have that feeling\,” he adds\, “the song would have never made it out of the rehearsal studio.” \n\n\n\nTheir last full-length was about energy\, says Jeffords\, an echo of the helicopters that shook the walls in his old apartment and the car crashes in the street. New Chants would be darker in tone and color\, he thought—about people and their machines\, and the blurring relationship between them. Like the way you can sometimes see your reflection in a TV screen—maybe you lose track of where the media starts and you begin. If “Fourth Walls” didn’t make it obvious\, the black border around their cover art does: Traps PS knows there’s always a frame around the image. \n\n\n\nThis is where the real spirit of that first wave of post-punk is at work on New Chants. It’s that uneasiness with the future and the unpredictable effects it brings\, and an effort to make an unpredictable new music to meet it. (Possibly related: there’s actually one of the Jazzcats studio cats playing piano on this album\, but not where you’d think.) New Chants is an album about watching and being watched\, about white noise and negative space\, about how what’s undone or unplayed or unsaid is just as deliberate and meaningful as everything else. Jeffords even perforated his lyrics sheet with “…” ellipses—negative space in the language itself. \n\n\n\nSo think Wire’s precision minimalism\, antidote to the over-the-top spectacle of punk and pop both. You’ll hear it in “Seven Voices” or the album’s title track. Think Public Image and that caustic\, corrosive—and purer for it—dissonance. You’ll hear it in “Two Truths\,” with its ragged semi-chorus of “Emmmmmmbrace …” Think the Contortions\, who tore out everything in their songs except the rhythm and discovered there wasn’t much else they’d needed anyway\, except for some saxophone used more as flamethrower than musical instrument. You’ll hear that as “Fourth Walls” falls in on itself. And then think about Traps PS\, who thought about what they didn’t need and then threw it out\, and who made an album only out of what they felt mattered most: “Let it be what it is\,” says Jeffords. New Chants is barely twenty minutes long—but it’s got everything.
