New Year’s Weekend PICKS: Thursday, December 29th thru Sunday, January 1st
Whew. What a year! We’re not usually ones to rush time along, but to be honest it feels good to show the end of 2022 the door, and usher in 2023. Happy New Year from The MUG!
Once again, The MUG has compiled the most comprehensive list of New Year’s EVEnts in Missoula and around Western Montana, all right here for you to make your own Weekend PICKS – Thursday thru Sunday.
Since New Year’s Eve falls on a Saturday, this year it’s a big one. We have Thursday through Sunday to shortcut (see just above); and for NYE, we have shortcuts to all the towns in Western Montana for everything going on for New Year’s EVEnts.
While Saturday gets the spotlight, there are quite a few other worthy events happening Thursday, Friday and Sunday. It’s a holiday weekend – take advantage of your time off and make the most of it.
Most all the local ski resorts have opened for the season, but with this past week’s thaw-freeze-thaw-freeze pattern, you’ll definitely want to check them for their holiday hours and conditions! Many of the local cross-country and fat biking hotspots are being groomed and skiied. Avalanche danger is high, check conditions and be extra-careful in the backcountry.
Almost every venue has a big party happening for New Year’s Eve – use our guide here on The MUG, and pick one (or a few!). We’re counting over 45 NYE parties, and over 80 local music shows of one kind or another in the area throughout the weekend. We’ve got options!
No matter what direction you wanna get outta town, you can’t go wrong. New Year’s Weekend activities and events are happening not only around Missoula, but all the way up the Flathead and the Bitterroot valleys, east to Phillipsburg and Anaconda, and out west past Alberton.
Get out and enjoy our locally-owned bars & restaurants with Montana grown / made food and beverages. Support our local farmers and crafts people. Take the family for a crisp hike or some amazing skiing. Catch a classic movie screening or a stand-up comedy night. Stretch that big brain at one of the local trivia nights. Sing your favorite karaoke song, or catch a live music show. Enjoy safely and responsibly.
Please confirm event details at the source before you go. Last minute changes are common, especially due to weather and the holiday. With each event listing, we try to include a web page or event link with more information you can check for changes.

Laney Lou and The Bird Dogs
Great Northern Bar
27 Central Avenue, Whitefish, Montana
$15 in Advance / $20 at Door
Laney Lou and the Bird Dogs are an energetic Americana band from Bozeman, Montana, that infuses four-part harmonies, engaging songwriting, and rock-n-roll drive into a modern approach to traditional folk music. Coming from varied musical backgrounds, the five-person ensemble creates a sound unique to them, but one that finds common ground by adding the energy of Montanas big sky country into their music. The Bird Dogs weave stories through their songs that are reflective, joyous, longing, or meant to share a journey with the listener. Through it all, the band is able to convey heartfelt honesty, getting the audience to immerse themselves in the moment by dancing, singing and laughing along.
The Bird Dogs have been taking their infectious sound on the road since 2013, supporting acts such as The Travelin’ McCourys, The Steeldrivers, The Steep Canyon Rangers, The Jeff Austin Band, Amy Helm, Leftover Salmon, Town Mountain, and many more.
The most recent album from Laney Lou and the Bird Dogs, Through the Smoke, was recorded in February of 2021 at The Panoramic House in Stinson Beach, CA. This album is one of personal transformation. The concept of letting things go, processing past and current situations, and moving forward has been ever present in 2020-2021, as the world went through trials beyond words. Laney Lou and the Bird Dogs found a way to represent their journey through hardship, while also celebrating the silver linings and breakthrough moments in their lives. Through the Smoke brings energy to the darkness, and proves that resilience can get us through the hardest of times.
The Bird Dogs released a live self-titled studio album in 2016, recorded at Basecamp Studio in Bozeman. Their follow-up album, titled The Vigilante Session, was recorded live at a forest service cabin in the Ruby mountains. In 2019 Laney Lou and the Bird Dogs recorded their first full-length studio album, Sweet Little Lies, at Prairie Sun Records in Cotati CA. Their live album, Live at the Filling Station, was recorded in 2019 at the Filling Station in Bozeman MT and released in 2020.
Laney Lou and the Bird Dogs consists of Lena (Laney) Schiffer on vocals/guitar/percussion, Matt Demarais on vocals/banjo, Ethan Demarais on bass, Brian Kassay on fiddle/mandolin/harmonica, and Josh Moore on vocals/guitar.

This year we gather under the projector lights. Our focus shifts to a visual projection art centric installation. As always we’ve put together a lineup of amazing House, Techno and Bass DJs accompanied by Go-go performances by The Dark Art Collective. A creative space will be set up for arts and crafts as well as other fun activities. Outdoor access with a fire pit and heating towers will make this an indoor/outdoor party.
We’re so excited to see you!

Ring in the New Year at Monk’s Bar with your old party pals Dead Hipster and dance the night away to literally every type of jam conceivable.
Like seriously, there’s an equally good chance you’ll hear “The New Year” by Death Cab at the stroke of midnight as you will “I Don’t F*** With You” by Big Sean. Or maybe even something off the Dirty Dancing soundtrack. Or we might just forget the countdown altogether (again) because we’re in the middle of CB’s favorite Nine Inch Nails/Britney Spears mashup. You just never know! But for real, we promise to remember the countdown this time.
Jams by DJs CB & Bubblpop with party photos all goddamn night long by the formidable Abi Baumann. Look sharp, get weird!

Artist Statement:
“A DECADE as a band? Hey, not bad! That’s longer than the Beatles, BTS, N’SYNC, or One Direction. The truth is, our longevity has nothing to do with persistence or work ethic—it’s all thanks to our wildly supportive friends, families, fans, venues, and anyone who has ever been a part of the group in its various incarnations over the years. It really does take a village. Missoula is a special place, and Shakewell never could have happened anywhere else. We love you Missoula!
See you at the Top Hat for an epic NYE throwdown!”

Black Tie in the Bitterroot – A New Year’s Eve Gala
St. Mary’s Family Center
333 Charlos St, Stevensville Montana
Jay Meyer, a 1970 Stevensville High School graduate who was FFA Chapter President that year, went on to teach fourth grade at Stevensville for 25 years, and recently received an Honorary American FFA degree. Meyer is a good example of the potential impact of FFA, and two more examples are Laura Frazee-Sonsteng and Lacey Sutherlin, a couple of Stevensville community dynamos who are heading up what they’re calling the “inaugural” Black Tie in the Bitterroot” New Year’s Eve Gala. These Stevensville FFA Alumni members are co-chairs of this fundraising event being put on by the Alumni to benefit the Stevensville FFA program.
These energetic women and the committee of volunteers they are working with are thinking big for this, because they are absolutely passionate about the FFA program and its benefits to students. The event will be held December 31st at St. Mary’s Family Center starting at 6 p.m. Tickets are $125 per person or $1000 for a table of 8 (which includes champagne and some business advertising). There will be a tri-tip dinner, cash bar, live auction, and dancing to the music of “Shane Clouse & Stomping Ground.”
