He was too. Long known as one of the most optimistic bright lights in the pop singer-songwriter sphere\, Grammer found himself fighting demons and finding new corners of himself\, places he hadn’t wanted to venture before. “Being happy\, anger is my vulnerability\,” he says. “I didn’t know how to deal with getting in touch with anger. I just pretended it wasn’t there.” Grammer embarked on a long mental health journey that mirrored an exploratory five-year interim between albums which\, of course\, happened to coincide with a particularly tumultuous five years for all of us. After everything\, Monster\, arriving October 4\, became a document of someone walking through a fire they never wanted to even look at\, and what happens when they emerge on the other side.   \n\n\n\nIn the half decade since 2019’s Naive\, Grammer lived a lot of life. There were heart-bursting highs\, like welcoming his second child\, and harrowing trials\, including the rupture of an important relationship. During the bleak pandemic years\, he sought therapy for the first time\, and began realizing there were all kinds emotions he was just beginning to process for the first time. Originally\, Grammer experimented with capturing an era dynamic with both struggle and growth in smaller snapshots: A host of steady singles across 2020-2023\, as well as 2022’s The Art Of Joy EP. Back then\, Grammer planned to collect the singles alongside a few new songs for his fifth album. Instead\, he picked up a mandolin.   \n\n\n\n“Sometimes an instrument guides the way\,” Grammer reflects. “When you find a unique sound you want to chase and sit with completely\, then the album as an art form really starts to matter to me.”    \n\n\n\nGrammer wasn’t intending to make an album built around mandolin\, but it happened. He wrote one song called “Bigger Man\,” the genesis and skeleton key to what became Monster. It was an uncustomary track for him: grappling with anger\, but striving to remain bigger than the darker sides of that emotion. Suddenly a new album began pouring out of Grammer. The folk pedigree of the mandolin proved inspiring. “There’s something about Americana and the twang that felt real to me when singing about struggle\,” he explains.   \n\n\n\n“It was a color speaking to me\,” Grammer continues. “My barometer is whether I’m doing something out of fear or out of joy. Sometimes you reach for a paintbrush because everyone’s using it\, for fear of missing out. As I get older I ask myself why we’re reaching for a color. If it’s because it’s freaking cool and you’re excited to play with it\, then go.”   \n\n\n\nSoon\, Grammer had a whole batch of songs\, but he knew he had to bring this new sound into the studio and meld it with his anthemic pop sensibilities. He carried his mandolin around LA\, working with various producers. One partnership in particular helped shape Monster. Grammer took more of a co-production role on the album\, building songs up at his home studio. Then he’d take these recordings to Adam Friedman\, who provided drums\, bass\, and helped Grammer achieve the kind of sky-scraping singalongs he’s known for.   \n\n\n\n The same as the music came tumbling out of Grammer\, so too did a lot of emotional reckoning in the wake of his therapy. “The word ‘monster’ has some bite to it\,” he says of the moment when he realized it had to be the album’s title. “I began to realize getting in touch with my anger was essential. I began to make peace with it\, and the monster got less scary.”   \n\n\n\n“There’s a relationship between artist and listener — like a close friendship\, where you get to know each other better and better\,” Grammer ventures. He knew Monster would be his most vulnerable album yet. There were moments of fear. If he was the guy who was always there to lift others up\, how would people react to him opening up about difficulties? Grammer\, instead\, found listeners thanking him. “When you’re singing your truth\, it will relate\,” he says. “It was freeing\, to be honest.”   \n\n\n\n Grammer struck a careful balance on Monster: He laid it all out there lyrically\, but it’s not as if Monster is uncharacteristically heavy in aesthetic. Complex feelings were filtered through rousing instrumentals\, reflective ballads and rejuvenating jams alike. Across the album\, Grammer takes on a spectrum of human experience — the mandolin rippling alongside him\, like old wisdom surfacing to lead him to some kind of answer.   \n\n\n\nLike a good therapy session\, Monster excavates life from one angle after another. Lead single “I Do” features Grammer singing alongside country music duo Maddie & Tae\, in a song written about Grammer’s wife Aijia that both playfully and thoughtfully depicts how the couple navigates the ups and downs of long relationships. “I sing ‘Even when I don’t love you\, I do\,’” he says. “Aijia and I have a standard of love for each other that’s bigger than the moment. We’re both committed to something larger.” The couple wrote and recorded other material for the record\, including “Grey\,” a song that mulls over whether love will survive as we age\, and “Unforgivable\,” an unflinching track influenced by a friend’s divorce. Pain and euphoria mingle freely. Grammer reclaims his “nice guy” reputation after getting stung in “Save A Spot In The Back”; playing on “nice guys finish last\,” he proclaims “Save a spot in the back for me.” “Magic” surges forward like a classic indie-pop banger while reminiscing on loss and the unexplainable in life that\, nevertheless\, give it all its vibrancy. The song has an extra layer of poignance as the last composition Grammer wrote with his longtime collaborator Bram Inscore prior to Inscore’s tragic death.  \n\n\n\n Now 40\, Grammer’s seen his fair share of real shit\, and the songs on Monster capture it all — the ugly and the beautiful sitting alongside one another\, each making no sense without its counterpart. From the hurt and confusion of the album’s opening\, these songs trace Grammer’s process of re-centering himself with what really matters in life before concluding with “Friends And Family.” Grammer sings of all the wild turns his life has taken\, but decides “It all means nothing without friends and family.” It’s a portrait of a man who has wrestled with parts of himself\, and found what’s really important.   \n\n\n\n “I think people will understand the journey — from acknowledging the anger\, leaving and experiencing things\, and then coming home to realize you’re not able to be your full self without these things\,” Grammer concludes. “And when we all end up singing it together at the top of our lungs — that’s what makes life explosive.”   \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Walk Off the Earth \n\n\n\nWalk off the Earth is a JUNO Award-winning multi-platinum musical phenomenon. But in that pause — just a few seconds long — it’s as if she’s looking at everything that has happened in her life in the time since she last released an album of new material\, 2019’s The Medicine Show\, and with it everything that is to come on this remarkable\, emotional mosaic of songs. At others it’s contemplative\, most profoundly and movingly in “Call You\,” her deeply affecting account of living in the wake of the opioid death of her son\, Beckett\, in 2021. In it she looks deep in her soul and cherishes the strengthening embrace of family\, friends and community. This also filters through “The Other Side of Blue\,” a light-in-the-darkness anthem co-written and co-sung with Chris Stapleton. And at the end of the album she shines in the warmth of “More Love\,” written for and sung at her daughter Bailey’s wedding last fall. The 2017 documentary May It Last: A Portrait of The Avett Brothers (co-directed by Judd Apatow and Michael Bonfiglio) chronicles the process of writing 2016’s True Sadness\, which debuted at #1 on Billboard’s Top Albums\, #1 on Rock Albums\, #3 on the Billboard 200\, and scored two Grammy nominations. The film was released theatrically and on HBO to rave reviews and is available on DVD/BluRay/VOD. In 2019\, the band released their tenth studio album Closer Than = Together featuring the single “High Steppin’” which reached #1 on the Americana Radio Singles Chart. The Third Gleam came out amidst the COVID-19 pandemic and debuted at #1 on Billboard’s Americana/Folk Albums\, #1 Rock Albums\, #1 Vinyl Albums\, and the single “Victory” hit #1 on the Americana Radio Singles Chart. This year saw the release of The Avett Brothers\, an album that is as much untitled as it is self-titled: a collection of songs that revealed themselves naturally over time. Swept Away – a musical inspired by & featuring the music of The Avett Brothers – recently debuted on Broadway. The Avett Brothers have been inducted into the North Carolina Music Hall of Fame and have earned a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Americana Music Association. They are currently on tour throughout the U.S. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Shane Smith and The Saints“It ain’t black or white\, babe; it’s all the greys between\,” Shane Smith sings in “The Greys Between\,” the first single from Norther. On the surface\, it’s a cinematic love song about a relationship’s twists and turns\, punctuated by slide guitar\, Appalachian fiddle\, and sharp storytelling. Take a deeper listen to Shane Smith and the Saints’ fourth studio album\, though\, and those words also sound like the motto of a band that’s spent the past decade blurring the lines between genres. \n\n\n\nNorther is anything but monochromatic. Written and recorded during breaks in the band’s touring schedule\, the album captures Shane Smith and the Saints at their most colorful\, offering up a hard-hitting version of American roots music that’s influenced by country\, folk\, and roadhouse rock & roll. It’s a sound that’s been shaped by the road\, where the Saints spent the past decade on tour\, building a cult audience with each gig. Those years of raw\, redemptive performances are now paying off — not only with headlining concerts at bucket-list venues like Red Rocks Amphitheater (which the group sold out in 36 hours) and the Ryman Auditorium\, but also with an appearance on the hit TV show Yellowstone\, where the Saints premiered Norther‘s final track\, “Fire in the Ocean\,” with an onscreen performance. \n\n\n\n“If you spend 10 years playing dive bars and small clubs almost every single night\, and you go to the merch booth after every show and hang out with the fans until the staff literally kicks you out\, you get to turn those fans into friends\,” says Smith\, who grew up in Terrell\, Texas\, before launching his band in Austin. “That’s how we built this thing. We’ve done as many as 240 shows in a single year. We’ve worked so hard to get there\, and that hard work has created a beautiful\, meaningful audience.” \n\n\n\nBeautiful\, indeed. Named after the northern winds that blow across Texas during the winter\, Norther begins with the haunting “Book of Joe.” Bennett Brown’s fiddle gives the song plenty of orchestral atmosphere\, Dustin Schaefer’s electric guitar adds anthemic punch\, and Zach Stover’s percussion — which builds toward a pummeling finish\, locking in with Chase Satterwhite’s bass along the way — rolls like thunder. At the center of that sound is Smith’s voice: a husky baritone that’s been textured by countless gigs in smoky bars and loud dance halls. It’s a gorgeously raw instrument\, caught halfway between tender and tough\, and it’s there — somewhere in the middle — that the Saints shine their brightest. \n\n\n\n“When you’re in a band like ours\, everyone gets their turn to play their music in the van\,” Smith explains. “Bennett grew up listening to Appalachian and Celtic-inspired folk and bluegrass music\, and you can hear that in the way he plays fiddle. Dustin grew up loving classic rock. When I met my wife\, she introduced me to music like Arcade Fire\, Alberta Cross\, and First Aid Kit — bands that I’d categorize as cinematic folk or cinematic indie-rock — and that had a massive impact on my writing\, too. Everybody in this band has their own influences\, and we’ve spent years together\, letting our sound evolve into something really unique.” \n\n\n\nThat sound began evolving onstage. Thanks to early albums like 2013’s Coast and 2015’s Geronimo\, Shane Smith and the Saints became a popular act in Austin\, regularly cutting their teeth with marathon gigs at venues like The Stage On Sixth. “We’d do four-hour sets\, sometimes back-to-back\, meaning we’d be onstage for eight hours\,” Smith remembers. “It taught us to grow tighter as a band\, experiment with our sound\, and find our identity.” \n\n\n\nReleased in 2019\, Hail Mary introduced the band’s current lineup\, as well as a heavier sound that separated the Saints from other Texas acts. It wasn’t rock & roll. It wasn’t country\, either. It was everything that connected those genres\, glued together by the camaraderie of a road-tested band that built its audience the old-school way: by hitting the stage and winning over the crowd\, song after song\, night after night. \n\n\n\nNorther builds upon that singular sound while also highlighting the bandmates’ road-warrior chops. “We’d be on the road doing shows\, and there would be a 48-hour gap where we’d fly into Dallas and try to record everything we possibly could\, then fly right back to wherever the bus was\,” says Smith\, who tapped producer Beau Bedford to helm the album. “It was like that for the entirety of the recording process.” The result is an album that’s filled with all the electricity and eclecticism of the Saints’ live show. For the band’s country-loving fans\, there’s “1000 Wild Horses\,” which barrels forward at a rootsy gallop. For rock fans\, there’s “Fire in the Sky\,” which makes room for fiery fretwork and a massive chorus. For those looking to slow dance\, there’s “All the Way\,” a threadbare piano ballad captured live in the studio\, imperfections and all. “Norther has little bit of everything\,” Smith says proudly. “It’s not a one-sided album. It’s got every single element of what makes up our sound right now.” \n\n\n\nFor an independent band like Shane Smith and the Saints\, the work is never done. “It’s like you can’t help but feel like you’ve paid your dues to get to a certain spot\, but once you get there\, you realize you’re just starting to touch the surface of the bigger picture\,” Smith admits. “At the end of the day\, it still feels like we’re getting discovered. But maybe that’s what it’s all about.” Norther is the soundtrack to that discovery. His latest evolution comes in the form of RISER\, a project due out Feb. 25\, 2014 that stands as his most personal to date. \n\n\n\nWritten and recorded in the year following his father’s death\, the album draws its title from “I’m A Riser\,” a song about resilience and determination. “I’m A Riser” works as a commentary on spiritual\, personal and societal recommitment\, but it also applies to the competitive battlefield of the music industry. It’s particularly appropriate for an album about rejuvenation delivered by Bentley. \n\n\n\n“Life in general has a way of knocking you down\,” Bentley says. “It’s different reasons for different folks – could be personal reasons\, could be family reasons\, your job\, drugs\, alcohol. That song really applies to anybody that’s lived. There have always been those moments when we have to get back up and get on our feet. Their latest album\, Beyond Beyond Beyond\, marks a grittier chapter in their evolution\, featuring standout songs like “The Well” and “Scars” while highlighting their continued growth. \n\n\n\nWith over a decade of touring experience and hundreds of shows under their belt\, The Crane Wives have shared stages with artists like The Avett Brothers\, Lake Street Dive\, and The Dead South\, bringing a seasoned\, electric presence wherever they play. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Yasmin WilliamsWhen guitarist and composer Yasmin Williams sits down to compose music\, she doesn’t scour her subconscious for unheard melodies or clever chord progressions. Instead\, she goes granular—fixating on a single note. She’ll play it over and over\, sustaining it\, varying the attack or the release to change its essence\, eventually adding notes to form chords. \n\n\n\nShe has a name for this. She calls it “ruminating” and describes it as a key part of her writing. “I’ve learned a little about how to sit with a note\, and to give things time\,” the Virginia native says. “You find some tiny idea and just play it over and over again until something else pops up … You have to trust that sometimes a note will take you to where it wants to go next.” \n\n\n\nThis intuitive process led Williams to the breathtakingly tactile and rivetingly understated Acadia\, her Nonesuch debut. Its nine original songs expand\, dramatically\, on the sonic space Williams created with her acclaimed 2021 album\, Urban Driftwood. In addition to the crisp fingerpicked guitar that helped establish her as a fast-rising star of instrumental folk\, Williams plays kora\, harp guitar\, banjo\, and electric guitar and bass—all with authority. And where her two previous records have been mostly solo\, Acadia finds Williams collaborating with artists across a wide stylistic range\, including the vocalist Aoife O’Donovan\, violinist Darian Donovan Thomas\, the folk quartet Darlingside\, synthesist Rich Ruth\, and jazz alto saxophonist Immanuel Wilkins. \n\n\n\nWilliams needed these ninjas to help her execute the simultaneously detailed and open-ended music she envisioned. Though her Acadia songs evoke sloping hills and rustic ambles\, they’re not folksy folk: Many are structured as complex suites and are notable for sudden shifts of mood\, spontaneous re-harmonizations\, and the extended mounting- tension ramp-ups common in progressive rock. Williams organized Acadia in three sections: The opening set of songs evokes the wily exuberance of old-time music\, then gently stretches its conventions; the second explores lush\, layered textures and zones of vast atmospheric ambience; the third\, which introduces electric guitar(s) and drums\, has an experimental\, improvisational spirit. She wrote the songs while touring\, and that’s audible: This music has a breathless\, world-in-motion sweep to it. It’s alive with wanderlust—specifically\, that elevated-awareness feeling of journeying when you don’t know exactly where you’re going. \n\n\n\nThat openness is something Williams says she longed for during the extended Urban Driftwood tour. “I used to really love the verse-chorus-bridge structures of folk songs\,” Williams says. “A lot of my earlier music is organized that way\, which I call ‘quick tunes’ and I still love playing.” After doing that a lot\, she says\, she longed for a more experimental ethos. She’s grown “more comfortable with letting things stretch out. I don’t feel like I need to maintain absolute control over the structure. For me\, music is now more about flexibility than it ever has been before.” \n\n\n\nThat could be an unexpected side benefit from the touring she’s done since 2021: The road throws surprises at every turn\, and how an artist responds can be telling. Williams mentions working on a new song the night before her first performance at the Newport Folk Festival. She didn’t finish the song\, which is called “Cliffwalk\,” but on the golfcart ride to the stage psyched herself up to perform it anyway; she’s since worked her improvisation from that day into the arrangement. \n\n\n\nWilliams has similar stories of spontaneous serendipity about nearly every Acadia track. She mentions “Harvest\,” which was conceived as a duet with the pathfinding acoustic guitarist Kaki King. Listening back to the final take\, Williams kept hearing another sound\, particularly in the middle section where harmonic artifacts from the two guitars intertwine in haunting ways. She invited the violinist Darian Donovan Thomas to the studio and shared her idea; literally twenty minutes later\, Williams recalls\, “Harvest” was transformed\, its middle section blossoming into a divinely inspired array of overlapping halo tones. “He figured out the world of that tune really quickly\, and just lived in that world.” \n\n\n\nWilliams’ calm\, gorgeously consonant music inspires this type of alchemy. Songs like “Sisters” and “Virga” seem to float across scenery in suspended animation\, as though propelled by placid mountain breezes. These pieces are centered around long-held consonant tones; they could easily have grown from those single-note explorations Williams uses as a composition prompt. \n\n\n\n“My fourteen-or fifteen-year-old brain told me: ‘We should let the notes ring out for as long as possible as often as we can\,’” Williams says about her penchant for grand sustained guitar sounds. In high school\, she played guitar for five or six hours a day—more time than she devoted to her first instrument\, the clarinet—and much of that was spent exploring ways to massage and sustain tone. “It just sounded better to me to do that\,” Williams says. “Still does. It requires a lot of practice\, getting hands in the right place … But I love when notes ring out. I love it when notes have time to develop\, in my music and the music I listen to.” \n\n\n\nWilliams doubts that listeners would notice if she one day stopped letting her notes ring out. But it matters to her. And her attention to such a small element of music reveals something essential about Yasmin Williams: She might seem to be way up in the upper atmosphere conjuring ethereal sounds\, but at the same time she’s in the engine room\, tweaking the small details of performance\, using often-overlooked elements of craft to underscore and amplify her compositions. \n\n\n\nThere are only so many ways for fingers to engage with the strings of a guitar\, and most of them are evident on Acadia: Williams pounds the strings\, conjures dense chords with a shredder’s lust for dissonance\, dances through intricate scampering leads (“Dream Lake”)\, chops out syncopated patterns with mechanistic precision\, arpeggiates with a feathery grace. And then\, when it’s time to pare things back to an essence\, she’ll lean into a note and hold it for a good long while\, to see what it has to offer. \n\n\n\n“I was taught to be picky about stuff like articulation\,” Williams says with a laugh. “I guess I learned it. Honestly\, this is the stuff that’s really important to me—the little things. They might go over people’s heads a little bit. They go over my head sometimes. An accomplished composer and arranger\, Anastasio has performed his original compositions with numerous symphonies\, including The New York Philharmonic\, The National Symphony Orchestra\, The Los Angeles Philharmonic\, The Boston Pops\, and many more. \n\n\n\nAnastasio\, along with Jon Fishman (drums\, vocals)\, Mike Gordon (bass\, vocals)\, and Page McConnell (keyboards\, vocals)\, formed Phish in Burlington\, VT\, and together have since earned one of music’s most dedicated fan communities for its blend of distinctive songcraft\, extended improvisation\, and immersive live performances\, all fusing a variety of genres into their own freewheeling sound and vision. The band has released 16 studio albums and is widely recognized among live music’s most beloved and inventive artists. \n\n\n\nPhish has played over 2\,000 shows since their formation\, regularly selling out multiple nights at arenas\, amphitheaters\, and stadiums across North America. To date\, the band has performed 91 sold-out shows at The Garden since their debut there in 1994. In addition\, Phish have influenced a new generation of American rock festivals through 11 self-produced festivals\, including\, most recently\, 2024’s Mondegreen\, which was celebrated in a GQ feature that hailed them for “what may be the most singular and stubbornly idiosyncratic career of any major American rock band.” In 2024\, the band performed a four-night sold-out run at Sphere in Las Vegas\, the second act to perform there\, following U2’s inaugural run at the groundbreaking venue. \n\n\n\nAnastasio is the founder of the Divided Sky Foundation (DSF)\, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization whose mission is to help people find joy in recovery from drugs and alcohol. In the fall of 2020\, Anastasio hosted a live-streamed musical residency now known as the Beacon Jams\, which spanned eight consecutive Fridays and were broadcast online while live chat boards offered real-time interaction between Trey and the Phish fan community. These now-legendary performances were a joyful respite from the isolation of the pandemic and raised a remarkable $1.2 million for DSF in order to help open a recovery center dedicated to treating those affected by alcoholism and addiction. Long considered to be one of the animated bassist’s most beloved bands\, this incarnation of the ever-morphing act boasts longtime Frog Brigade members Skerik (saxophone) and Mike Dillon (percussion\, vibraphone)\, as well as Sean Lennon (guitar)\, Harry Waters (keyboards) and Paulo Baldi (drums). However\, when Claypool initially dreamed up the Frog Brigade at the dawn of the new Millennium\, he actually considered it to be more of his “therapy project.” \n\n\n\nAt the time\, Primus—his long-running\, festival-approved alt-funk trio—had hit a rough patch and Claypool was looking for a new creative outlet. “We called it a hiatus but\, at the time\, we were broken up\,” Claypool says\, referencing Primus’ trajectory in 2000.. “Me and one of my best friends in the entire world\, Larry LaLonde\, weren’t talking.”  \n\n\n\nJust as Primus’ future was starting to feel uncertain\, Claypool was beginning to discover a new\, exciting audience thanks to a high-profile set with Oysterhead—his supergroup with Phish’s Trey Anastasio and The Police’s Stewart Copeland. After receiving an offer to perform at Angels Camp\, Calif.’s Mountain Aire Festival\, Claypool put together a new group of musicians drawn from both his inner circle and the extended improv scene. He briefly toyed with calling the project the Thunder Brigade\, before shifting to the slightly gentler moniker the Frog Brigade. Riffing to the Mountain Aire Festival’s scenic location\, he chose the name as a nod to the jumping frog of Calaveras County popularized by Mark Twain. Then\, he hopped on the road.   \n\n\n\n“I said\, ‘I’m gonna gather some of my favorite musicians together and hit the road.’ I bought this little airstream and packed these guys into this motorhome and started driving up and down the coast playing bars\,” Claypool says. “That was the original Frog Brigade—Skerik\, Jeff Chimenti\, Jay Lane\, Todd Huth from Sausage and then Eenor\, who I found on Craigslist. We just had a blast.” \n\n\n\nThe ensuing run of shows not only exposed Claypool to an entirely new\, open-eared audience but also kickstarted his second act as a solo artist. Not wanting to play songs from the Primus catalog\, Claypool loaded his Frog Brigade sets with new\, juicy originals and covers by prog-rock godfathers like King Crimson.  \n\n\n\n“When I did the Holy Mackerel record\, Highball with the Devil\, in 1996\, I always said that those were the songs I wouldn’t inflict upon the guys of Primus—I just knew that it wasn’t gonna thrill them to play those songs\,” Claypool says. “Some of them were written on guitar and some of them were written on drums. With Frog Brigade\, I was free to do that again. I was free to go in there and be a mad scientist.” \n\n\n\nHe also made the daring decision to perform Pink Floyd’s 1977 psychedelic masterpiece Animals in its entirety each night. \n\n\n\n“I’ve always wanted to play ‘Pigs’ if I had a keyboardist in my band because it’s one of my all-time favorite Pink Floyd songs\,” Claypool says. “And then we said\, ‘Why don’t we learn the whole record. That way we can play two sets.’” \n\n\n\nLes Claypool’s Fearless Flying Frog Brigade\, as the ensemble soon became known\, immediately gelled both on and off the stage—connecting the dots between the jam\, punk\, prog and metal communities along the way. They played a marquee set at the inaugural Bonnaroo in 2002\, participated in the SnoCore Tour and welcomed the likes of Bob Weir and Warren Haynes to the stage. In 2001\, Claypool released Live Frogs Set 1 and 2\, the latter of which featured the Frog Brigade’s award-winning take on Animals. The following year\, the Frog Brigade dropped a full-length studio album\, Purple Onion\, which introduced a slew of new original material and won over fans and musicians alike.  \n\n\n\n“Making the Purple Onion record was an incredible experience\,” Claypool says. “Tom Waits listed it as one of his top 20 albums of all time\, and I can’t even believe that just came out of my mouth. It was a great time for creativity and experimentation. There was a lot of pasta being thrown at the walls at that time. And it was a good period of growth for me. I became way more confident and\, with the Animals set in particular\, I became way more confident in my vocals. I never really considered myself to be a singer—I always felt like I was the narrator of the band but I actually had to sing some of this material and work on my singing.” \n\n\n\nIn 2003\, Primus reunited\, and Claypool’s muse slowly started to lead him elsewhere.  “To me\, the Frog Brigade represented a certain era of what I was doing and then there was a period when I no longer had a guitar in the band. The Frog Brigade had lots of guitar and keyboard so when it became me and the cello and Mike Dillon’s melodic sense and whatnot\, it was just so different that we stopped using the name. It slowly got whittled down—it was no longer Mothers of Invention\, it just became Zappa.” \n\n\n\nYet\, the adventurous spirit Claypool rediscovered with the Frog Brigade has continued to guide his every move\, sending Primus in new directions and helping spawn solo vehicles like the Fancy Band and The Claypool Lennon Delirium\, his group with Lennon and Baldi \n\n\n\nAnd now\, over 20 years since the Frog Brigade’s last full-scale tour\, Claypool has regrouped his highly improvisational outfit for an extended run. The revamped Flying Frog Brigade plans to mix in material from all eras of Claypool’s illustrious solo career\, as well as a selection of choice covers. They will also once again perform Animals every night.  \n\n\n\n“There is a pretty rich catalog of material there so there will definitely be stuff from my entire career\,” Claypool says. “It won’t just be the Frog Brigade era\, but the big element of the Frog Brigade is gonna be playing Animals. But this time we’re doing it with just one guitar and with five marimbas and saxophones so this will be a new interpretation\, obviously—a different interpretation with Sean in there. There might be a Delirium song. There are a lot of popsicle sticks on the table to build some things with.” \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout The Claypool Lennon DeliriumTwo worlds have collided\, and what glorious and odd worlds they are. After a successful summer tour\, pairing Primus with Ghost of a Saber Tooth Tiger\, the two bandleaders\, Les Claypool and Sean Lennon\, have decided to combine their abstract talents into a project called The Claypool Lennon Delirium. Their efforts thus far have spawned the upcoming\, full-length release called “Monolith of Phobos.” \n\n\n\n“Sean is a musical mutant after my own heart\,” said Claypool. “He definitely reflects his genetics–not just the sensibilities of his dad but also the abstract perspective and unique approach of his mother. It makes for a glorious freak stew.” After some impromptu\, backstage jams and an epic live sit-in on Primus’s psychedelic opus\, “Southbound Pachyderm\,” Claypool approached Lennon about doing a recording project. “I was trying to wrangle up an Oysterhead reunion since Primus was taking a rest for 2016 but the planets just wouldn’t align for that\,” said Claypool. “I don’t like sitting around\, so when Sean said he didn’t have plans for this next year\, we started kicking around the notion of making an old-school\, psychedelic/prog record. Next thing I know\, he’s staying in my guesthouse\, drinking my vino and banging on my drums.” \n\n\n\nLennon responded\, “I told Les that I was Neil Diamond’s nephew. I think that is what really sold him on the idea of working with me.” \n\n\n\nOver the course of six weeks or so\, the two wrote and recorded a total of ten songs with both of them sharing various vocal and instrumental responsibilities\, going beyond their core instruments of bass and guitar. Claypool explained\, “Usually I play the drums and percussion on my records but Sean has such a different feel than I do\, it just made more sense for him to man the kit on most of the tunes on this project. I took the helm at my old vintage API console and let him bang away. He was happy as a piggy rolling in shit every time he grabbed the sticks…his drumming is like a cross between Ringo and Nick Mason. But I think folks will be most surprised by what a monster guitar player he is\, especially when you prod him a bit.” \n\n\n\n“Monolith of Phobos” is just how the title implies–an old-school approach to a psychedelic space rock record. \n\n\n\nLennon added\, “It’s been an honor and a challenge playing with someone of Les’ caliber\, but luckily the Gods of Pinot Noir shone favorably down and granted us a bundle of devilish tunes about monkeys\, outer space and sexual deviancy.” \n\n\n\nThe Claypool Lennon Delirium “Monolith of Phobos” record is slated for a spring release and the band will be touring through the summer. \n\n\n\n\n	Related
