He was too. Long known as one of the most optimistic bright lights in the pop singer-songwriter sphere\, Grammer found himself fighting demons and finding new corners of himself\, places he hadn’t wanted to venture before. “Being happy\, anger is my vulnerability\,” he says. “I didn’t know how to deal with getting in touch with anger. I just pretended it wasn’t there.” Grammer embarked on a long mental health journey that mirrored an exploratory five-year interim between albums which\, of course\, happened to coincide with a particularly tumultuous five years for all of us. After everything\, Monster\, arriving October 4\, became a document of someone walking through a fire they never wanted to even look at\, and what happens when they emerge on the other side.   \n\n\n\nIn the half decade since 2019’s Naive\, Grammer lived a lot of life. There were heart-bursting highs\, like welcoming his second child\, and harrowing trials\, including the rupture of an important relationship. During the bleak pandemic years\, he sought therapy for the first time\, and began realizing there were all kinds emotions he was just beginning to process for the first time. Originally\, Grammer experimented with capturing an era dynamic with both struggle and growth in smaller snapshots: A host of steady singles across 2020-2023\, as well as 2022’s The Art Of Joy EP. Back then\, Grammer planned to collect the singles alongside a few new songs for his fifth album. Instead\, he picked up a mandolin.   \n\n\n\n“Sometimes an instrument guides the way\,” Grammer reflects. “When you find a unique sound you want to chase and sit with completely\, then the album as an art form really starts to matter to me.”    \n\n\n\nGrammer wasn’t intending to make an album built around mandolin\, but it happened. He wrote one song called “Bigger Man\,” the genesis and skeleton key to what became Monster. It was an uncustomary track for him: grappling with anger\, but striving to remain bigger than the darker sides of that emotion. Suddenly a new album began pouring out of Grammer. The folk pedigree of the mandolin proved inspiring. “There’s something about Americana and the twang that felt real to me when singing about struggle\,” he explains.   \n\n\n\n“It was a color speaking to me\,” Grammer continues. “My barometer is whether I’m doing something out of fear or out of joy. Sometimes you reach for a paintbrush because everyone’s using it\, for fear of missing out. As I get older I ask myself why we’re reaching for a color. If it’s because it’s freaking cool and you’re excited to play with it\, then go.”   \n\n\n\nSoon\, Grammer had a whole batch of songs\, but he knew he had to bring this new sound into the studio and meld it with his anthemic pop sensibilities. He carried his mandolin around LA\, working with various producers. One partnership in particular helped shape Monster. Grammer took more of a co-production role on the album\, building songs up at his home studio. Then he’d take these recordings to Adam Friedman\, who provided drums\, bass\, and helped Grammer achieve the kind of sky-scraping singalongs he’s known for.   \n\n\n\n The same as the music came tumbling out of Grammer\, so too did a lot of emotional reckoning in the wake of his therapy. “The word ‘monster’ has some bite to it\,” he says of the moment when he realized it had to be the album’s title. “I began to realize getting in touch with my anger was essential. I began to make peace with it\, and the monster got less scary.”   \n\n\n\n“There’s a relationship between artist and listener — like a close friendship\, where you get to know each other better and better\,” Grammer ventures. He knew Monster would be his most vulnerable album yet. There were moments of fear. If he was the guy who was always there to lift others up\, how would people react to him opening up about difficulties? Grammer\, instead\, found listeners thanking him. “When you’re singing your truth\, it will relate\,” he says. “It was freeing\, to be honest.”   \n\n\n\n Grammer struck a careful balance on Monster: He laid it all out there lyrically\, but it’s not as if Monster is uncharacteristically heavy in aesthetic. Complex feelings were filtered through rousing instrumentals\, reflective ballads and rejuvenating jams alike. Across the album\, Grammer takes on a spectrum of human experience — the mandolin rippling alongside him\, like old wisdom surfacing to lead him to some kind of answer.   \n\n\n\nLike a good therapy session\, Monster excavates life from one angle after another. Lead single “I Do” features Grammer singing alongside country music duo Maddie & Tae\, in a song written about Grammer’s wife Aijia that both playfully and thoughtfully depicts how the couple navigates the ups and downs of long relationships. “I sing ‘Even when I don’t love you\, I do\,’” he says. “Aijia and I have a standard of love for each other that’s bigger than the moment. We’re both committed to something larger.” The couple wrote and recorded other material for the record\, including “Grey\,” a song that mulls over whether love will survive as we age\, and “Unforgivable\,” an unflinching track influenced by a friend’s divorce. Pain and euphoria mingle freely. Grammer reclaims his “nice guy” reputation after getting stung in “Save A Spot In The Back”; playing on “nice guys finish last\,” he proclaims “Save a spot in the back for me.” “Magic” surges forward like a classic indie-pop banger while reminiscing on loss and the unexplainable in life that\, nevertheless\, give it all its vibrancy. The song has an extra layer of poignance as the last composition Grammer wrote with his longtime collaborator Bram Inscore prior to Inscore’s tragic death.  \n\n\n\n Now 40\, Grammer’s seen his fair share of real shit\, and the songs on Monster capture it all — the ugly and the beautiful sitting alongside one another\, each making no sense without its counterpart. From the hurt and confusion of the album’s opening\, these songs trace Grammer’s process of re-centering himself with what really matters in life before concluding with “Friends And Family.” Grammer sings of all the wild turns his life has taken\, but decides “It all means nothing without friends and family.” It’s a portrait of a man who has wrestled with parts of himself\, and found what’s really important.   \n\n\n\n “I think people will understand the journey — from acknowledging the anger\, leaving and experiencing things\, and then coming home to realize you’re not able to be your full self without these things\,” Grammer concludes. “And when we all end up singing it together at the top of our lungs — that’s what makes life explosive.”   \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Walk Off the Earth \n\n\n\nWalk off the Earth is a JUNO Award-winning multi-platinum musical phenomenon. She then takes a pause\, the flurry of her guitar and her bandmates’ boisterous sounds fading out\, before she practically shouts\, with unbridled joy: “God I love being alive! “The words say so much. But in that pause — just a few seconds long — it’s as if she’s looking at everything that has happened in her life in the time since she last released an album of new material\, 2019’s The Medicine Show\, and with it everything that is to come on this remarkable\, emotional mosaic of songs. Dustin grew up loving classic rock. When I met my wife\, she introduced me to music like Arcade Fire\, Alberta Cross\, and First Aid Kit — bands that I’d categorize as cinematic folk or cinematic indie-rock — and that had a massive impact on my writing\, too. Everybody in this band has their own influences\, and we’ve spent years together\, letting our sound evolve into something really unique.” \n\n\n\nThat sound began evolving onstage. Thanks to early albums like 2013’s Coast and 2015’s Geronimo\, Shane Smith and the Saints became a popular act in Austin\, regularly cutting their teeth with marathon gigs at venues like The Stage On Sixth. “We’d do four-hour sets\, sometimes back-to-back\, meaning we’d be onstage for eight hours\,” Smith remembers. “It taught us to grow tighter as a band\, experiment with our sound\, and find our identity.” \n\n\n\nReleased in 2019\, Hail Mary introduced the band’s current lineup\, as well as a heavier sound that separated the Saints from other Texas acts. It wasn’t rock & roll. It wasn’t country\, either. It was everything that connected those genres\, glued together by the camaraderie of a road-tested band that built its audience the old-school way: by hitting the stage and winning over the crowd\, song after song\, night after night. \n\n\n\nNorther builds upon that singular sound while also highlighting the bandmates’ road-warrior chops. “We’d be on the road doing shows\, and there would be a 48-hour gap where we’d fly into Dallas and try to record everything we possibly could\, then fly right back to wherever the bus was\,” says Smith\, who tapped producer Beau Bedford to helm the album. “It was like that for the entirety of the recording process.” The result is an album that’s filled with all the electricity and eclecticism of the Saints’ live show. For the band’s country-loving fans\, there’s “1000 Wild Horses\,” which barrels forward at a rootsy gallop. For rock fans\, there’s “Fire in the Sky\,” which makes room for fiery fretwork and a massive chorus. For those looking to slow dance\, there’s “All the Way\,” a threadbare piano ballad captured live in the studio\, imperfections and all. “Norther has little bit of everything\,” Smith says proudly. “It’s not a one-sided album. It’s got every single element of what makes up our sound right now.” \n\n\n\nFor an independent band like Shane Smith and the Saints\, the work is never done. “It’s like you can’t help but feel like you’ve paid your dues to get to a certain spot\, but once you get there\, you realize you’re just starting to touch the surface of the bigger picture\,” Smith admits. “At the end of the day\, it still feels like we’re getting discovered. But maybe that’s what it’s all about.” Norther is the soundtrack to that discovery. His latest evolution comes in the form of RISER\, a project due out Feb. 25\, 2014 that stands as his most personal to date. \n\n\n\nWritten and recorded in the year following his father’s death\, the album draws its title from “I’m A Riser\,” a song about resilience and determination. “I’m A Riser” works as a commentary on spiritual\, personal and societal recommitment\, but it also applies to the competitive battlefield of the music industry. It’s particularly appropriate for an album about rejuvenation delivered by Bentley. \n\n\n\n“Life in general has a way of knocking you down\,” Bentley says. “It’s different reasons for different folks – could be personal reasons\, could be family reasons\, your job\, drugs\, alcohol. That song really applies to anybody that’s lived. There have always been those moments when we have to get back up and get on our feet. They are defining moments…breakthrough moments.” \n\n\n\nAccepting change – and growing from it – is a key theme in RISER\, and it is reflected by the tone of the album\, which demonstrates a new artistic depth and an extra level of intensity for Bentley. It evolves from track to track\, exuding a range of emotions\, all the while impressing upon the listener that Bentley’s instinct for a hit is stronger than ever. Bentley made significant reconfigurations in his creative team to shake up his sonic texture without sacrificing his commercial drive. He re-enlisted executive producer Arturo Buenahora\, Jr.\, who worked on Bentley’s first two albums; and utilized producer Ross Copperman\, who co-wrote “Tip It On Back” for Bentley’s previous album Home. \n\n\n\nThe new atmosphere yielded the most focused and intense vocals of Bentley’s career. Some were recorded live with the band as the musicians laid down the tracks\, but others were captured in less-than-obvious locales. One track’s vocal was recorded on Bentley’s tour bus. Still others were cut at Copperman’s house with the producer literally at Bentley’s side\, pushing him to some of his most emotional\, and seasoned\, performances. \n\n\n\n“It’s not even really a studio\,” Bentley says of Copperman’s set-up. “It’s just kind of a corner of the house he’s taken over\, so there was a kind of intimacy to the vocal process. It was important to get out of the studio and sing in different places\, and to do it with other people in the room. That way\, you have an audience and you get a sense of what’s working\, what’s not working\, when it’s feeling good\, not feeling good. It brings a little more emotion and energy out of your voice.” \n\n\n\nSince making a life-altering drive with his father from Phoenix to Nashville when he was 19 years old\, Bentley has forged his own path in an industry built predominantly on formula. Be forewarned…here they come! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Les Claypool’s Frog BrigadeAfter over 20 years\, Les Claypool will once again hit the road with his Fearless Flying Frog Brigade for the Summer of Green Tour. Long considered to be one of the animated bassist’s most beloved bands\, this incarnation of the ever-morphing act boasts longtime Frog Brigade members Skerik (saxophone) and Mike Dillon (percussion\, vibraphone)\, as well as Sean Lennon (guitar)\, Harry Waters (keyboards) and Paulo Baldi (drums). However\, when Claypool initially dreamed up the Frog Brigade at the dawn of the new Millennium\, he actually considered it to be more of his “therapy project.” \n\n\n\nAt the time\, Primus—his long-running\, festival-approved alt-funk trio—had hit a rough patch and Claypool was looking for a new creative outlet. “We called it a hiatus but\, at the time\, we were broken up\,” Claypool says\, referencing Primus’ trajectory in 2000.. “Me and one of my best friends in the entire world\, Larry LaLonde\, weren’t talking.”  \n\n\n\nJust as Primus’ future was starting to feel uncertain\, Claypool was beginning to discover a new\, exciting audience thanks to a high-profile set with Oysterhead—his supergroup with Phish’s Trey Anastasio and The Police’s Stewart Copeland. After receiving an offer to perform at Angels Camp\, Calif.’s Mountain Aire Festival\, Claypool put together a new group of musicians drawn from both his inner circle and the extended improv scene. He briefly toyed with calling the project the Thunder Brigade\, before shifting to the slightly gentler moniker the Frog Brigade. Riffing to the Mountain Aire Festival’s scenic location\, he chose the name as a nod to the jumping frog of Calaveras County popularized by Mark Twain. Then\, he hopped on the road.   \n\n\n\n“I said\, ‘I’m gonna gather some of my favorite musicians together and hit the road.’ I bought this little airstream and packed these guys into this motorhome and started driving up and down the coast playing bars\,” Claypool says. “That was the original Frog Brigade—Skerik\, Jeff Chimenti\, Jay Lane\, Todd Huth from Sausage and then Eenor\, who I found on Craigslist. We just had a blast.” \n\n\n\nThe ensuing run of shows not only exposed Claypool to an entirely new\, open-eared audience but also kickstarted his second act as a solo artist. Not wanting to play songs from the Primus catalog\, Claypool loaded his Frog Brigade sets with new\, juicy originals and covers by prog-rock godfathers like King Crimson.  \n\n\n\n“When I did the Holy Mackerel record\, Highball with the Devil\, in 1996\, I always said that those were the songs I wouldn’t inflict upon the guys of Primus—I just knew that it wasn’t gonna thrill them to play those songs\,” Claypool says. “Some of them were written on guitar and some of them were written on drums. With Frog Brigade\, I was free to do that again. I was free to go in there and be a mad scientist.” \n\n\n\nHe also made the daring decision to perform Pink Floyd’s 1977 psychedelic masterpiece Animals in its entirety each night. \n\n\n\n“I’ve always wanted to play ‘Pigs’ if I had a keyboardist in my band because it’s one of my all-time favorite Pink Floyd songs\,” Claypool says. “And then we said\, ‘Why don’t we learn the whole record. That way we can play two sets.’” \n\n\n\nLes Claypool’s Fearless Flying Frog Brigade\, as the ensemble soon became known\, immediately gelled both on and off the stage—connecting the dots between the jam\, punk\, prog and metal communities along the way. They played a marquee set at the inaugural Bonnaroo in 2002\, participated in the SnoCore Tour and welcomed the likes of Bob Weir and Warren Haynes to the stage. In 2001\, Claypool released Live Frogs Set 1 and 2\, the latter of which featured the Frog Brigade’s award-winning take on Animals. The following year\, the Frog Brigade dropped a full-length studio album\, Purple Onion\, which introduced a slew of new original material and won over fans and musicians alike.  \n\n\n\n“Making the Purple Onion record was an incredible experience\,” Claypool says. “Tom Waits listed it as one of his top 20 albums of all time\, and I can’t even believe that just came out of my mouth. It was a great time for creativity and experimentation. There was a lot of pasta being thrown at the walls at that time. And it was a good period of growth for me. I became way more confident and\, with the Animals set in particular\, I became way more confident in my vocals. I never really considered myself to be a singer—I always felt like I was the narrator of the band but I actually had to sing some of this material and work on my singing.” \n\n\n\nIn 2003\, Primus reunited\, and Claypool’s muse slowly started to lead him elsewhere.  “To me\, the Frog Brigade represented a certain era of what I was doing and then there was a period when I no longer had a guitar in the band. The Frog Brigade had lots of guitar and keyboard so when it became me and the cello and Mike Dillon’s melodic sense and whatnot\, it was just so different that we stopped using the name. It slowly got whittled down—it was no longer Mothers of Invention\, it just became Zappa.” \n\n\n\nYet\, the adventurous spirit Claypool rediscovered with the Frog Brigade has continued to guide his every move\, sending Primus in new directions and helping spawn solo vehicles like the Fancy Band and The Claypool Lennon Delirium\, his group with Lennon and Baldi \n\n\n\nAnd now\, over 20 years since the Frog Brigade’s last full-scale tour\, Claypool has regrouped his highly improvisational outfit for an extended run. The revamped Flying Frog Brigade plans to mix in material from all eras of Claypool’s illustrious solo career\, as well as a selection of choice covers. They will also once again perform Animals every night.  \n\n\n\n“There is a pretty rich catalog of material there so there will definitely be stuff from my entire career\,” Claypool says. “It won’t just be the Frog Brigade era\, but the big element of the Frog Brigade is gonna be playing Animals. But this time we’re doing it with just one guitar and with five marimbas and saxophones so this will be a new interpretation\, obviously—a different interpretation with Sean in there. There might be a Delirium song. There are a lot of popsicle sticks on the table to build some things with.” \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout The Claypool Lennon DeliriumTwo worlds have collided\, and what glorious and odd worlds they are. After a successful summer tour\, pairing Primus with Ghost of a Saber Tooth Tiger\, the two bandleaders\, Les Claypool and Sean Lennon\, have decided to combine their abstract talents into a project called The Claypool Lennon Delirium. Their efforts thus far have spawned the upcoming\, full-length release called “Monolith of Phobos.” \n\n\n\n“Sean is a musical mutant after my own heart\,” said Claypool. “He definitely reflects his genetics–not just the sensibilities of his dad but also the abstract perspective and unique approach of his mother. It makes for a glorious freak stew.” After some impromptu\, backstage jams and an epic live sit-in on Primus’s psychedelic opus\, “Southbound Pachyderm\,” Claypool approached Lennon about doing a recording project. “I was trying to wrangle up an Oysterhead reunion since Primus was taking a rest for 2016 but the planets just wouldn’t align for that\,” said Claypool. “I don’t like sitting around\, so when Sean said he didn’t have plans for this next year\, we started kicking around the notion of making an old-school\, psychedelic/prog record. Next thing I know\, he’s staying in my guesthouse\, drinking my vino and banging on my drums.” \n\n\n\nLennon responded\, “I told Les that I was Neil Diamond’s nephew. I think that is what really sold him on the idea of working with me.” \n\n\n\nOver the course of six weeks or so\, the two wrote and recorded a total of ten songs with both of them sharing various vocal and instrumental responsibilities\, going beyond their core instruments of bass and guitar. Claypool explained\, “Usually I play the drums and percussion on my records but Sean has such a different feel than I do\, it just made more sense for him to man the kit on most of the tunes on this project. I took the helm at my old vintage API console and let him bang away. He was happy as a piggy rolling in shit every time he grabbed the sticks…his drumming is like a cross between Ringo and Nick Mason. But I think folks will be most surprised by what a monster guitar player he is\, especially when you prod him a bit.” \n\n\n\n“Monolith of Phobos” is just how the title implies–an old-school approach to a psychedelic space rock record. \n\n\n\nLennon added\, “It’s been an honor and a challenge playing with someone of Les’ caliber\, but luckily the Gods of Pinot Noir shone favorably down and granted us a bundle of devilish tunes about monkeys\, outer space and sexual deviancy.” \n\n\n\nThe Claypool Lennon Delirium “Monolith of Phobos” record is slated for a spring release and the band will be touring through the summer. \n\n\n\n\n	Related

Mike Love’s contributions as a songwriter\, in collaboration with Brian Wilson\, have produced timeless hits like “Surfin’\,” “Fun\, Fun\, Fun\,” and “California Girls\,” “Warmth of the Sun\,” “Good Vibrations\,”  and long list of other titles highlighting his enduring talent. \n\n\n\nContinuing to engage his fans with new and innovative projects\, in 2020 Love released the single “This Too Shall Pass”  featuring John Stamos aimed at offering hope during the Covid-19 pandemic. Bigger than ever\, playing to fans spanning multiple generations\, and in the midst of their most creative purple patch. A brand new album – titled The Night the Zombies Came – marks the group’s tenth studio record (if you count 1987’s Come On Pilgrim). 13 new songs that will arrive aptly in time for Halloween amongst a 2024 touring schedule taking in circa 70 shows across the globe – and even more to be announced in 2025. \n\n\n\nSpend an hour or two in the company of Charles Thompson IV\, and the conversation will soon fall to zombies\, bog people\, Druidism\, medieval theme restaurants\, shopping malls\, the Masons\, surf rock and the practice of slaughtering lambs in Monmouthshire. Along the way\, he might take in Shirley Collins\, the distinctive dry drum sound of 1970s’ Fleetwood Mac\, and the sestina\, a poetic form attributed to the 12th century Provencal troubadour Arnaut Daniel.  \n\n\n\nOut of such disparate wonders are Pixies’ albums made. “Fragments that are related\,” as Thompson (better known as Black Francis) puts it. “And juxtaposed with other fragments in other songs. And in a collection of songs in a so-called LP\, you end up making a kind of movie.” \n\n\n\nSince their earliest days in late 80s’ Massachusetts\, and on past their 2004 reformation\, Pixies have worked this way — proclaiming their love for both Hüsker Dü and Peter\, Paul and Mary\, relishing both loud and quiet\, singing somewhat kaleidoscopically of reincarnation\, scuba diving\, Luis Buñuel\, necromancy\, Samson and Delilah and the 1986 comedy drama Crimes of the Heart. From the start their music has been imagistic\, contradictory\, electrifying. They stand as one of the most influential\, revered and deeply adored bands of all time. \n\n\n\nThe juxtaposed fragments that make up this year’s The Night the Zombies Came are perhaps the most cinematic of their career — gothic meets sci-fi shlock\, horror flicks\, dark folk tales and Ennio Morricone westerns. \n\n\n\nEarly on\, the band noticed the songs were dividing into two camps: what they came to call the ‘Dust Bowl Songs’ — country-tinged\, ballad-esque numbers such as Primrose and Mercy Me\, and on the other side\, the album’s furious punk numbers such as You’re So Impatient and Chicken. Only Jane (the Night the Zombies Came) keeps its feet in both camps — reminiscent of early 60s Phil Spector\, the band hitting the sweet spot between mushy and abrasive\, it’s a track that Thompson allegedly likened to being chased by a swarm of bees. \n\n\n\nFor this outing\, the band returned to work with producer Tom Dalgety\, who has steered Pixies since 2016’s Head Carrier and on through 2019’s Beneath the Eyrie and 2022’s Doggerel\, and whom Thompson refers to as “a good master of a lot of information” and drummer David Lovering calls “a fifth Pixie now.” \n\n\n\nOver the course of the last three records\, they have established a rhythm with Dalgety: the producer heading to Thompson’s house in Massachusetts a week before recording to familiarise himself with the new songs\, sitting in his front room with a laptop\, while the singer strums out a few ideas. “I really love that process\,” Dalgety says. “From a professional\, productive side of things it’s really nice to get to know the songs and experiment. But also from a geeky fan point of view it’s quite cool being sat on the sofa and seeing ten Pixies songs just suddenly unfold in front of you.” \n\n\n\nFrom there\, the band reconvened once again at Guilford Sound studio in Vermont\, sharing a house together\, rehearsing in the living room\, walking through the autumn woods each day to the studio to record. The hours were not relentless. When the sun went down\, Thompson notes\, they could still go howl at the moon. \n\n\n\nBut they used their time wisely and often experimentally. For several records now\, Thompson has been chasing a different sound for the drums — not the expansive boom of the expensive studio live room with its perfect acoustics and high-end microphones\, but something deader and drier and more akin to the records he loved from the early 1970s.  \n\n\n\nFor a couple of Zombies’ tracks — Chicken and Mercy Me\, Lovering and Dalgety relented. The producer set up a small drum kit in a small room\, deadened the drum skins with cloth and gaffer tape. “And they stuff David in there\,” recalls Thompson. “And you know\, climbing in and out of it is sort of like climbing in and out of a fish aquarium. And it probably gets warm in there. So I’m sure that he suffered for my dry drum sound. I don’t know if there was blood\, but there was definitely a lot of sweat. And maybe some tears.” \n\n\n\nLovering is diplomatic. “Compact would be the word for it\,” he says. “Everything was just nice and muffled the way I like to hear it. And if you listen now\, it is concise\, you hear the drums much more\, they’re not as open and brash or arena style. They’re just right there\, and it makes for a different kind of sound.” \n\n\n\nThere were other changes\, too. A line-up shift has brought in bassist Emma Richardson (Band of Skulls)\, and with it\, a different quality to the band’s sound. Thompson praises the restrained elegance of her voice. Dalgety speaks of her “fantastic creative vibe”. Lovering describes her as “a consummate bass player.”  \n\n\n\nThe recent tour\, of which Richardson was a part\, was particularly joyful for the drummer. “I think the response to these shows and the way that we’ve been playing is because of the rhythm section\,” he says. “Of course I’m up there\, but Emma is up there with me. And when the rhythm section is locked on\, and laying it down with power\, Joe and Charles can screw off as much as they want. She’s just killing it.” \n\n\n\nFor Richardson\, the invitation to join Pixies was a huge and unexpected compliment. She spent weeks exploring the band’s back catalogue ahead of the live shows\, trying to understand their magic.“They have this amazing way of making something that is quite a complicated arrangement sound really effortless and very succinct\,” she says. “But actually when you’re picking it apart as a musician you realise all the tricks that they use. How cleverly they form songs and structures and lyrics.” \n\n\n\nThe new record is particularly special to her. “It’s incredible. It feels slightly different from anything they’ve done before. It’s got this brilliant mixture of a knowing nostalgia and a punk\, energetic\, fun element. But it’s got this dark underbelly\, and an almost romantic longing feel to it. They’ve created these little worlds which are quite cerebral and dreamlike\, but it’s also got these big vistas. It’s quite cinematic.” \n\n\n\nZombies also marks an expanded role for guitarist Joey Santiago. The track I Hear You Mary began as an instrumental he wrote for the previous album\, and having also contributed his first lyrics on Doggerel\, on this record\, Thompson set Santiago the task of writing the words to Hypnotised by completing a sestina — a lyrical riddle of sorts\, formed of six stanzas of six lines\, in which words are rotated in a set pattern. Santiago\, startled by the responsibility\, set about labouring over a complex set of lyrics before coming to a realisation: “The truth of the matter is you’re just putting fucking words together. The lesson is just not to be precious. Just fucking do it.” \n\n\n\nIn recent years\, Santiago has also sought to learn more about guitar playing — aware\, he says\, that it might help conquer his long-running imposter syndrome. “I was afraid\, kinda\, that I was going to lose my identity if I started studying it\, but it made my studio experience a lot easier\,” he says. For months\, he found himself following the Youtube algorithm as it guided him through intensive tutorials. “Every musician will tell you that it’s a never ending thing\,” he says. “It’s pretty remarkable that there are 12 notes and there are still possibilities out there.” \n\n\n\nLovering\, too\, has been deep in pursuit of self-improvement. “I find that the only time I get better or change or learn new things is just by playing and playing and playing\,” he says. “It’s taken me 50 years to learn how to play the drums\, and I mean that honestly. In the last year I’ve learned the way to play off my right hand — I never did that in the past\, I was lazy as hell! And everything is like a clock now. So I’m excited not only with what we did with the record\, but for upcoming stuff. We’re going to sound good!” \n\n\n\nBack in the company of Thompson\, the conversation has moved on to headless chickens\, gargoyles\, the lingering presence of the undead. “When we’re putting together a record\,” he says\, “we’re not trying to make it fit around a particular theme\, but there may be a couple of catchphrases or words or concepts that are kicked around. On this particular record\, I would say it would be ‘zombies’. Though it’s not in every song\, and it’s not necessarily presented in a literal way.” \n\n\n\nOn every album they’ve ever made\, Pixies have taken the record’s title from the lyrics — a song title\, or a line. For a time\, Thompson says\, he struggled to find a title for this new collection of songs. “The only phrase that seemed to sound good to me is this one. Everything else seemed too goofy. You would think The Night the Zombies Came would be the most goofy-sounding\, but to my ear\, and to Tom’s also and to the rest of the band\, it felt like ‘Oh\, yeah\, The Night the Zombies Came. That’s it. Of course.” \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout SpoonSpoon\, Austin’s most esteemed rock ambassadors\, have released ten albums to date including a string of five straight top 10 records: Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga (2007)\, Transference (2010)\, They Want My Soul (2014)\, Hot Thoughts (2017)\, and Lucifer on the Sofa (2022). \n\n\n\nLucifer on the Sofa earned the band its first-ever GRAMMY nomination (Best Rock Album) and was praised by Rolling Stone as “The best thing they’ve ever done.” \n\n\n\nHailed by TIME as “one of the greatest American rock bands”\, Spoon topped Metacritic’s chart as the single most critically acclaimed band of the aughts. \n\n\n\nIn 2019\, Spoon released Everything Hits At Once: The Best of Spoon\, which was praised by NPR as a “convincing argument for Spoon being one of their era’s most distinctive and excellent rock bands.” That same year\, Fender released the Britt Daniel Signature Telecaster Thinline as part of their artist signature electric guitar series – highlighting the enduring influence of Daniel’s precision-punk style that has helped fuel Spoon to become what the Guardian calls ‘one of the finest bands of their generation.’ \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout FazerdazeIn a society where being strong and resilient is often held up like a badge of honour\, it’s much\, much harder to acknowledge when enough is enough – to accept when it’s time to let go. In this way\, Lucha has become cyclical\, documenting the parallel trust Mendoza Ramos has built with herself to allow the songs to guide how they should be sung\, or even sound. \n\n\n\n“I’ve been wanting to let whatever feels natural—with rhythm and musical instruments like congas and singing—to just let it be\, in the way that I’m trying to invoke in myself.” Lucha reflects on\, “the continuing process of learning how to exercise my producing skills\,” explains Mendoza Ramos. “I have so many words\, ideas to work with all the time\, and the hardest part for me has been learning to trust my gut. Devendra Banhart\,” a full-circle collaboration for Mendoza Ramos as she reminisces on the significance of finding Banhart’s work nearly two decades earlier: “He was the first young Spanish-speaking musician that wasn’t playing traditional Mexican music I heard when I was 21. There was nothing like it around that time.” \n\n\n\n“Nunca” is a warm\, wind-rich track dedicated to her mother\, Maria Elena Ramos whose poetry is published alongside the Lucha lyrics booklet. “I decided to put my mom’s poem\, which is a poem that she wrote to me\, letting me know how she felt\, exploring her heart in new ways she’s never imagined.
