Big Sky Film Series: Coded Bias
Online Event
This Fall we are thrilled to announce the return of the Big Sky Film Series featuring a slate of three new docs that will screen virtually. All film series screenings are free and open to the public, check streaming links for availability in your area!
https://watch.eventive.org/bigskyfilmseries2020
Join us for the opening screening of the 2020 virtual Big Sky Film Series featuring an essential new exposé from Shalini Kantayya, CODED BIAS.
Modern society sits at the intersection of two crucial questions: What does it mean when artificial intelligence (AI) increasingly governs our liberties? And what are the consequences for the people AI is biased against? When MIT Media Lab researcher Joy Buolamwini discovers that most facial-recognition software does not accurately identify darker-skinned faces and the faces of women, she delves into an investigation of widespread bias in algorithms. As it turns out, artificial intelligence is not neutral, and women are leading the charge to ensure our civil rights are protected.

LOCATION:
October 22 – meet at the ‘M’ trailhead
October 29 – meet at the Montana Natural History Center
These two classes, one driving, one hiking, will cover major topics such as Glacial Lake Missoula, faulting, river bed dynamics, erosion, and more. Gain a foundational understanding of our fascinating geology here in Missoula through in-depth information and lively discussion!
Each trip will take approximately 2 hours.
October 22: Trip One, Hiking Tour: Forming the Missoula Valley
Note: this is a steep climb requiring moderately high to strenuous effort. It is loose, steep footing going downhill.
We will meet at the ‘M’ trailhead (note: you may need to purchase a parking pass from the kiosk at the trailhead). We will walk to the UM’s administration building to get a view of ripple marks and xenoliths. We will then return to the ‘M’ trail and climb to the M. As we climb, we will pull out at large switchbacks and gather at the top to discuss faulting, valley fill, valley erosion, and the cutting of the Hellgate canyon with a bird’s-eye view of the valley. The class ends back at the trailhead.
October 29: Trip Two, Driving Tour: River Dynamics on a Landscape Scale
Note: You will need a car for this trip.
We will meet outside of the Montana Natural History Center, and will then drive our own vehicles to local river terraces on 3rd Street and behind St. Patrick’s Hospital. Traveling to Lolo Street in the Rattlesnake, we will view more river terraces before heading to Marshall Grade east of East Missoula. At this site we will discuss faulting, floodplains, river migration, and the meander loop at Brickyard. The trip concludes here.
