A Taste of Oktoberfest
Bayern Brewing Inc.
1507 Montana St, Missoula, Montana
We have been getting lots of questions on whether or not the traditional Oktoberfest at Bayern Brewing Inc. or Germanfest at Caras Park will be taking place this year and we are sad to say they will not. We debated on doing a socially distanced version of the events, however holding such a large gathering during these times would not be wise. We want to continue to keep everyone safe so next year we can host an even bigger Oktoberfest and Germanfest celebration than in years past (fingers crossed).
So with that said, Bayern Brewing Inc. and Global and Cultural Affairs in ARTS Missoula are coming together to bring you the 2020 version of the celebration…. A Taste of Oktoberfest ! Starting the week of September 14th, Bayern Brewing Inc., Edelweiss Bistro, The Stone of Accord, The Thomas Meagher Bar, and Iron Horse Bar & Grill will have authentic German Beer Steins available for purchase. Each location will host a smaller socially distanced event, with specials and promotions while strictly following safety guidelines. Keep an eye out for further details.
This year the steins have a slightly different look but you can still choose between the pewter lidded stein for $40 or the stein with no lid for $25 (form of payment and time of availability may vary at each location). With your purchase of this authentic German Beer Stein you will help support the connection with our German sister city Neckargemünd, Germany. Keep in mind these steins are VERY limited this year, so get yours while supplies last.

Missoula Redux Exhibit Opening
Allez
120 N Higgins Ave., Missoula, Montana
Allez is incredibly excited to present our second mural installation! For this show we wanted to pay homage to Missoula’s history and roots, but with a modern spin. So we invited seven amazing local artists to take historical photos of Missoula’s past, and remake them into their own contemporary visions. We are proud to feature work by Courtney Blazon, Marlo Crocifisso, Anne Cruikshank, Jesse DeRosier, Theo Ellsworth, Lillian R. Nelson, and Jenna Parker.
With each project we are expanding the alleyway into our intended vision, and this time we will be exhibiting the artworks printed to mural size and hung inside our custom-made framing system.
We will host a socially distanced “opening” celebration down the alleyway of 120 N Higgins. The beauty of being outside is that distancing will be much easier, but we are still asking that you wear a mask if you cannot maintain a 6′ distance.

Into the Wild with “Muir and Pinchot”
North Valley Public Library
208 Main Street, Stevensville, Montana
Please Register for headcount and location updates.
How do we relate to nature? Preservation-based philosophies, associated with author and wanderer John Muir, celebrate the spiritual benefits of holistic, unimpaired natural systems. Conservation-based philosophies, associated with US Forest Service founder Gifford Pinchot, highlight management and sustainability of natural resources for all.
In 1896, Muir and Pinchot met in what is now Glacier National Park and discussed these philosophies. What happened next changed the course of history.
In this program, biographer John Clayton and philosopher Marisa Diaz-Waian co-lead a discussion about the unique lives of Muir and Pinchot and the questions their contrasting philosophies raise about “the wild” and our place in it.
Some of the questions we’ll explore include:
- Are people part of nature, or separate (and inferior)?
- How do we balance holistic spiritual benefits with specific resource-based ones?
- What’s more important, individualism or fairness and sustainability?
- Can contrasting philosophies come together for a common good?
Conducted on a on a walk-about — going into the wild with Muir and Pinchot.
Sponsored in part by Humanities Montana.
John Clayton is a nonfiction writer who is particularly drawn to the intersection of history, nature, and culture. His book Wonderlandscape: Yellowstone National Park and the Evolution of an American Cultural Icon won the High Plains Book Award. His previous books include The Cowboy Girl: The Life of Caroline Lockhart and Stories from Montana’s Enduring Frontier. He often writes for the Montana Quarterly and Big Sky Journal, among other magazines. This presentation draws from his latest book, Natural Rivals: John Muir, Gifford Pinchot, and the Creation of America’s Public Lands.
Marisa Diaz-Waian is the founder and director of Merlin CCC, a public philosophy non-profit based out of Helena, MT. A member of the Mellon Philosophy as a Way of Life Network, the 2020 Ethics Initiative Project “Connecting Generations through Ethics,” and the Philosophy Learning & Teaching Organization, she presents and contributes regularly on ways in which philosophy can help to enrich lives and strengthen our communities and environment.
