Weekend Picks: Thursday, August 26th thru Sunday, August 29th

It’s the last weekend of August, and while the days are getting noticeably shorter, we finally got our pleasant weather back. This is the last Thursday for Downtown Tonight in Missoula, and a handful of the area farmers markets are wrapping up their summer seasons already, with a full bounty of locally-grown produce. Comedy and karaoke are happening all over! The River City Roots Fest will be the center of the Missoula universe, and the big Flathead Rodeo is happening all weekend in Polson with live music nightly.
The MUG is here with all the happenings this weekend around Missoula, and up the Bitterroot and Flathead valleys. There’s live local music all over the place. Get out and enjoy our area bars & restaurants with Montana grown / made food and beverages. And – floating the river is still good, enjoy what’s left of summer while we can. Please enjoy safely and responsibly.
Please note that events are subject to cancellation or change at the last minute. Be sure to check the event links to confirm your plans.

Camp Horror Film Festival
The Roxy Theater
718 S. Higgins Street, Missoula, Montana
Camp Horror is a film festival a little bit different from the rest. This festival came to life after The Roxy started its monthly horror film series “Trash Talk”, where trashy b-movies get their time to shine amongst the high indie art the theater is known for. After seeing how Missoula showed up to sell out films like “Tammy & The T-Rex”, we knew there was something special happening. So to honor that community and give it a place to grow, Camp Horror was born. Camp Horror strives to be a home for gory classics, while giving newer stories a platform. Add in a few sprinkles of live comedy and after camp parties and you just had a slice of the perfect cake.
Visit camphorror.org for more info and get tickets today!

About Open Aid Alliance: Open Aid Alliance works with the unique potential of each individual to overcome stigma and achieve greater health. They primarily focus on stigma surrounding HIV status, mental health, and substance use. Most of the people served experience these health issues daily while surviving homelessness, incarceration, poverty and trauma throughout their lifetime. Open Aid Alliance are not medical providers. They practice radical acceptance and proven public health strategies to help people overcome the barriers they face in housing and healthcare. They build trust and help people meet their basic survival needs so they can begin their journey toward improved health. Engaging in low-threshold care and harm reduction, they meet people where they are and invite them to come as they are through several programs that support the complexities of being human. John Reischman and Eli West
Longstaff House
601 Longstaff Street, Missoula, Montana
Bring along a donation for the music, some food and drink, masks and a lawn chair if you wish.
John Reischman is one of the premier mandolinists of his generation. He’s a master instrumentalist capable of swinging between re-inventions of traditional old-time tunes, deconstructions from the bluegrass repertoire, and compelling original tunes, many of which have become standards. He’s also a powerful bandleader, touring his band the Jaybirds all over Canada and the United States. A member of the groundbreaking Tony Rice Unit, Reischman’s mastery of bluegrass, old-time, swing, and multiple Latin American musical styles, coupled with an Old Master’s sense of tone, taste, and musicality, has brought him a global reputation as one of the finest mandolinists of his era. But most of all, he’s an understated visionary, the kind of master craftsman whose music is virtuosic without ever being flashy and who is renowned for his impeccable taste and tone as an artist. John Reischman embodies the true spirit of acoustic music in the 21st century.
Eli West is a Seattle-based multi-instrumental musician and interactive graphic designer. With an interest in angular phrasing and non-traditional improvisation within the historic precedents of bluegrass and old-time music, his playing both grounds and pushes the ensembles he is involved with. Well-known for his work with Norwegian fiddler Olav Mjelva, Cahalen Morrison, Jayme Stone and more, the Seattle-based singer and multi-instrumentalist oozes understated talent. He has released three records as half of the new/old-time duo Cahalen Morrison & Eli West, which tours regularly throughout the US and Europe. Eli is an active ingredient playing guitar, banjo, and bouzouki with both Jayme Stone’s Lomax Project and John Reischman and the Pine Siskins.
