Weekend PICKS: Thursday, December 2nd thru Sunday, December 5th

It’s December already – how did that happen?
While we’re (im)patiently awaiting the arrival of the snow that’s running waaaay late, we’ll take one more weekend of moderate temps and a little rain while we do our best PNW impersonation. On the upside, it’ll be perfectly fine weather to get around to all the pre-Christmas hustle & bustle, and even to get out and cut that free range tree.
Top of the list: Griz vs Eastern Washington home game at 7:00 pm Friday night at Washington Grizzly Stadium. We’ve had a helluva solid season so far, and we’re looking to carry this thing all the way. GO GRIZ!
We have a First Friday that’ll make it worth your while to get out to do some holiday shopping and noshing in Downtown Missoula.
Saturday’s Reverse Parade of Lights and Holiday Stroll will make Downtown Missoula a bustling scene all day.
Christmas Craft & Vendor Fairs a go-go! Towns large and small all over western Montana have ’em going on. Support local vendors – your best gifts are not sitting on a container ship of the coast!
There’s live local music at all the regular places all around, all the way through the weekend. And there’s no shortage of really great fine arts events to choose from as well, including the Missoula Symphony’s Holiday Pops at the Dennison Theatre. Multiple performances of “A Christmas Carol” are being performed on stage at the historic Philipsburg Theater. Heck, there’s even an appearance by the Cigarette Girls Burlesque Show celebrating the anniversary of the end Prohibition at Missoula’s Stave & Hoop speakeasy on Sunday night!
Get out and enjoy our locally-owned bars & restaurants with Montana grown / made food and beverages. See a comedy show. Sing your favorite Christmas karaoke song (’til the season), or catch a live show. Enjoy safely and responsibly.
Please note that events are subject to cancellation or change at the last minute. Be sure to check the event links to confirm your plans.

Bombshell Nightlight w/Special Guest Ash Nataanii & No (solo)
Zootown Arts Community Center

To purchase advance tickets visit: https://showroom.zootownarts.org/…/bombshell…/
Bombshell Nightlight is the bedroom-pop project of Jon Cardiello (also of Anything Bagel, Wrinkles, Fantasy Suite, Soft Maybe). Cardiello uses this project to process his innermost self. In Blue Heron Above Me, his sophomore album, he channels his most somber, vulnerable songwriting to date. The songs display a radical intimacy as Cardiello touches on grieving his father’s death, the pains of a drawn out breakup, and the clarity of new love. The album shares the diary-like songwriting of Cardiello’s debut, Placid Lake, but explores new sonic territory – epic guitar ballads, soft droney confessionals, light hearted synth pop – a huge range but it is all done with such earnestness that the album is a front to back delight! 2021 will see Cardiello breathing new life into these songs with a full band of Missoula musicians (Johanna Kohorst of Mermaid Book Club, Noelle Huser of No and Esp, Kale Huseby of Boys and J Sherri, and Sanders Smith of Anything Bagel, Soft Maybe, and Wrinkles).
Noelle Huser (No) is a local musician, dancer and artist. She hopes to use music as a tool to express the things words alone just don’t do justice. Those things tend to focus on personal and interpersonal anxieties. Through an indie pop/rock and folk influenced lense, she makes sense of her dreams and nightmares the best way she knows how. When she is not solo she plays with her band No – comprised of Erin and Duncan Szalda-Petree (of ESP), Ally Fradkin, and Caleb Tutty. She also plays in Bombshell Nightlight. She has also released music under the moniker Apocalypse Friend, a spooky synth pop project she created with Thomas Elsen (of Wrinkles) and Brendan Casey (Katana Boy).
When you wanna move mountains sometimes you just need a little faith in small things. Ash Nataanii arms herself with nothing but an 80’s Casio, an electric guitar, and all the heartbreak she can wring out of wet cloth vocals. Generally seen as the ruckus frontwoman for hell-or-high-water punk band FUULS, Ash Nataanii shells up in tenderness to establish her cathartic spiritual noise is just as loud and affecting through a whimper. Her album Exit Music for Exit Wounds is as much exorcism as it is prophecy. It’s a scrapbook of familiar sounds and a sneak peek at heartbreak yet to be. Included are songs that were written via stream of consciousness and recorded the same day, as well as songs that have been soaking over nearly a decade. Everything here has a breadth of what it feels life can give, and it’s hard to think Ash could have possibly squeezed out anything more. The songs are lo-fi, curiously full, and packed with enough sweetness to soothe the heartache it bears you.
Masks are required for attendees for all Show Room events at this time. Masks may be removed for beverage consumption, but we ask that they please be worn at any time when not actively drinking.

Reclaim | eł xʷlxʷilt – Works by Monica Gilles-Brings Yellow
Zootown Arts Community Center
216 W Main Street, Missoula, Montana
In the Blackfoot Communications Gallery through December
The ZACC is delighted to present Reclaim | eł xʷlxʷilt: Works by Monica Gilles-Brings Yellow in the Blackfoot Communications Gallery for the month of December.
Monica Gilles-Brings Yellow is a self-taught Indigenous artist based out of Missoula, Montana. She prefers to work in mixed media (resin, acrylic, gold leaf, marker) in a process that she calls 3-D collage. Her work focuses primarily on Native American people. She uses historical images of Indigenous people in the hopes of offering a platform to discuss the resilience, importance, and impact Native people’s lives have had on present day society. Monica hopes that her representation of actual Native American people and discussion of portions of their lives will help the viewer begin to move beyond the romanticization of American Indians in Western culture and to understand the subjects of her paintings as humans who exist in the present day (rather than caricatures of people who live solely in the past). She hopes to create a dialogue regarding Indigenous people that brings to light a history that is often unknown, concealed, or disregarded by broader American society.
