Weekend PICKS: Thursday, February 3rd thru Sunday, February 6th

Well, Hellooo February!
The MUG is here to guide you around town and western Montana for all the good stuff happening this weekend.
We’ve compiled the most comprehensive list of this weekend’s events in Western Montana, all right here for you to make your own Weekend PICKS.
It’ll be #firstfriday with lots of art and music options in Downtown Missoula to choose from Friday evening. You’ll find us rocking to Pinky and The Floyd at The Wilma!
We’re counting nearly 70(!) live music shows of one kind or another in the area. Plus there are winter markets, the Whitefish Winter Carnival happening Friday thru Sunday, some fantastic film and cinema showings, and just way more than anyone can fit in four days of great reasons to enjoy the weekend.
Check current conditions via the links here for Snowbowl, Lost Trail, Whitefish, Blacktail and Discovery. There are outstanding conditions for XC all around Missoula & Western Montana. FatBike Missoula has been grooming tracks at Twin Creeks. Bitterroot Backcountry Cyclists are reporting good fat biking on the trails around Lake Como and other areas in great shape, too.
No matter what direction you wanna get outta town, you can’t go wrong. Activities and events are happening not only around Missoula, but all the way up the Flathead and the Bitterroot valleys, and Phillipsburg.
Get out and enjoy our locally-owned bars & restaurants with Montana grown / made food and beverages. Catch a classic movie screening. Sing your favorite karaoke song, or catch a live show. Enjoy safely and responsibly.
Please confirm event details at the source before you go. Last minute changes are common, especially due to weather. With each event listing, we try to include a web page or event link with more information you can check for changes.
Do you have a Western Montana event you would like to have included on The MUG? Click HERE to submit your event!
“Groundhog found fog. New snows and blue toes. Fine and dandy for Valentine candy. Snow spittin’; if you’re not mitten-smitten, you’ll be frostbitten! By jing-y feels spring-y.”

“The last gig I played here (Draught Works) was with The Otters in 2018. Expect a jubilantly radical return solo style with excellent draught brews and live alternative folk. Original tunes on the foldout stage from 6-8 pm. Get your table early!”
Draught Works is thrilled to host singer-songwriter Jay Alm on the murphy stage for a solo performance you won’t soon forget!
Jay Alm plays a scathing, soulful blend of Acoustic Alternative Psychedelia and Rootsy, Lyrical Meanderings. Expect six- and 12-string guitar, the occasional mandolin, a capella audio poetry, and intimate scratch-born vocals. Based out of Jackson Hole, Wyoming, Jay radiates a poignant, playful take in his quasi-alternative folk-isms and a head-in-the-clouds-approach to biting acoustic rock. After several years of D.I.Y. touring throughout North America, from the Carolinas to Alaska, Jay’s road-inspired sound should appeal to singer songwriter, indie-folk, blues, and alt-rock fans alike.

Gallery Opening: Highs & Lows
Zootown Arts Community Center
216 W Main Street, Missoula, Montana
‘Highs and Lows’ is a group art show from six well-known, Missoula based professional illustrators in a super secret non-exclusive club who draw over one another’s art. The work is a departure from the artists’ crafted commercial work into stream of consciousness, free-flowing complete pieces. You can see more than 30 collaborative drawings 16×20” on white paper at the ZACC February 4th. Join us for beverages, music, treats, games, prints for sale and prizes. This informal group of artists has been making collaborative drawings together for almost four years. They share a love of comic books and drawing and getting weird, and when you lock them in a room together they shape bizarre worlds. Some drawings have a logic to them. Maybe a thematic element, a spatial cohesion, or a stylistic approach that ties the composition together. Other times it’s all nonsense piled upon nonsense that also somehow works together. The drawings aren’t really an objective so much as a byproduct of friends hanging out. Sometimes things get rowdy. Sometimes they sit in silence. Sometimes they bring in fresh faces to mix it up.
Josh Quick is a local illustrator, author of Montana Quick Facts, and Yellowstone Quick Facts.
Theo Ellsworth is a Missoula-based graphic novelist, and the creator of Capacity. Theo also recently adapted Jeff VanderMeer’s story Secret Life into a graphic novel.
Tony Gregori is a local comic book artist, illustrating many monthly comics including The Worst Dudes from publisher Dark Horse.
Daniel Mrgan is a Missoulian and bike-enthusiast, who ‘makes art sometimes’. He regularly illustrates for Adventure Cycling.
Cooper Malin is a Missoula-area artist and Instagram influencer whose drawings mix funny people with flora and fauna.
Lauren Norby is a Missoula-based artist and zine-maker.

ABOUT PINKY AND THE FLOYD
Pinky and the Floyd has recently been called the Northwest’s Hottest Pink Floyd Tribute Band! Since it’s inception in 2008, Pinky has exploded in popularity, selling out nearly every show in the past 4 years. Their performances strike the perfect balance between intimacy & intensity, and the energy and stage presence is unprecedented.
“Veterans of Pink Floyd concerts were almost in awe with the sold-out performance. Pinky and the Floyd produces a wall of sound with all the bricks intact.” – Pat Hill (The Bozone)
All Pinky members are professional working musicians, assembled from genres across the board, culling their expertise to produce what has clearly proven to be a successful musical venture. All told, there are over 20 bands that the members of Pinky and the Floyd are part of, spanning genres from Americana & Vintage Swing to Hip Hop, Jazz, Country, Salsa, Funk, Rock, Blues and on and on… They see their varied backgrounds as strength in diversity, knowing that each member “…unconsciously affects the overall sound. As players, musicians & artists, whatever you’ve got comes with you…” And between the 9 of them, they’ve got a lot.
“Hands down, the best show we have been to! Thank you for making our 4-hour drive worth while!”
– Rebecca Fetzer Quillen
Pinky and the Floyd has a big sound and is an experience not soon forgotten. You can expect albums in their entirety, and a little something from every Floyd genre – from Syd Barrett to Division Bell, and everything in between!

Mudslide Charley + Margi Cates
Zootown Arts Community Center
216 W Main Street, Missoula, Montana
To purchase advance tickets visit: https://showroom.zootownarts.org/…/mudslide-charley…/
Local R&B/blues stalwarts Mudslide Charley draws inspiration from a more antiquated era when Muddy Waters and John Lee Hooker first fused the rough and rural vibes of southern acoustic blues with modern electric instruments, adding a nice touch of modern soul to create a house rockin’ roots music sound that never leaves a dance floor empty.
Margi Cates sings on her bike, in airports, and on stages. Sometimes she sings R&B/soul, sometimes she sings wedding stuff, and sometimes she sings to children. You should hear the songs she’s written, they’re mostly about being alive, or in love and holding it all at once. She’s been studying being a vessel of sound for like-EVER. She likes to make you feel things. She is joined by Nick Barr on guitar, Ricky Schade on bass, and Tyler Duncan on drums.
Masks are required for attendees for all Show Room events at this time. Masks may be removed for beverage consumption, but we ask that they please be worn at any time when not actively drinking. A Raisin in the Sun
The Roxy Theater
718 Higgins Avenue, Missoula, Montana
The Roxy Theater is proud to present Essential Cinema, a monthly series of the most iconic and important films the artform has to offer.
Lorraine Hansberry’s immortal A Raisin in the Sun was the first play by a black woman to be performed on Broadway. Two years later, the production came to the screen, directed by Daniel Petrie. The original stars—including Sidney Poitier and Ruby Dee—reprise their roles as members of an African American family living in a cramped Chicago apartment, in this deeply resonant tale of dreams deferred. The Youngers await a life-insurance check they hope will change their circumstances, but tensions arise over how to use the money. Vividly rendering Hansberry’s sharp observations on generational conflict and housing discrimination, Petrie’s film captures the high stakes, shifting currents, and varieties of experience within black life in midcentury America. Presented in 35mm. Sponsored by Farmers State Bank.
