Weekend PICKS: Thursday, January 13th thru Sunday, January 16th

Well, welcome to our 2022 edition of real winter! Other than some seriously sketchy roads, the daily temps are not bad at all – suitable for getting outside & enjoying all the goings-on, if you’re comfortable with driving wherever you may need to go.
We’ve compiled the most comprehensive list of this weekend’s events in Western Montana, all right here for you to make your own Weekend PICKS. You’d think things would be a little slow for the weekend shows – not the case. We’re conservatively counting over 57 live music shows of one kind or another in the area!
Temps this weekend are warming up to perfectly pleasant days outdoors. You can check current conditions via the links here for Snowbowl, Lost Trail, Whitefish, and Discovery. There are outstanding conditions for XC at Lolo Pass ,Pattee Canyon, and Rattlesnake; the UM Golf Course is ready for action. FatBike Missoula has been grooming tracks at Twin Creeks. Bitterroot Backcountry Cyclists are reporting good fat biking on the trails around Lake Como and other areas in great shape, too.
The MUG is here to guide you around town and western Montana for all the good stuff happening this weekend.
No matter what direction you wanna get outta town, you can’t go wrong. Activities and events are happening not only around Missoula, but all the way up the Flathead, and the Bitterroot valleys.
Get out and enjoy our locally-owned bars & restaurants with Montana grown / made food and beverages. Sing your favorite karaoke song, or catch a live show. Enjoy safely and responsibly.
Please confirm event details at the source before you go. Last minute changes are common, especially due to weather. With each event listing, we try to include a web page or event link with more information you can check for changes.
Do you have a Western Montana event you would like to have included on The MUG? Click HERE to submit your event!
“These northern-tier countries are populated by a bunch of generally happy people who not only tolerate winter but have come up with strategies for embracing it.”

ABOUT BANFF MOUNTAIN FILM FESTIVAL
Banff Centre Mountain Film Festival World Tour was born from Banff Centre Mountain Film and Book Festival which began in Banff, Alberta. In 1976 a tight-knit group of climbers and outdoor enthusiasts conceived The Banff Festival of Mountaineering Films. This was one-day gathering that became the renowned international Festival it is today. Over 30 years ago, Banff Centre Mountain Film Festival began an outreach program to bring the Festival to other communities. This has become known as Banff Centre Mountain Film Festival World Tour. Like the first festival in Banff, the tour began small – three cities across Canada. Banff Centre Mountain Film Festival World Tour now reaches over 40 countries and brings mountain films to an audience of over 550,000 worldwide in approximately 550 locations.

Zootown Arts Community Center
216 W. Main Street, Missoula, Montana
$10 To purchase advance tickets visit: https://showroom.zootownarts.org/…/people-on-fire-rock…/
‘No’ is the alt/indie rock pop project of Noelle Huser. Pouring their heart out in a sweet and sour puddle, they sort personal and interpersonal anxieties, making sense the best way she knows how of her nightmares and dreams.
Linus is a newly formed ‘zen punk’ band from Missoula, Montana. Bri Watkins shreds the bass for this project, and has been in a variety of rock projects adding her own unique twist to sound experiments. Carson rips on the drums and has basically been hiding under some rock his entire life honing his craft. Kelsey Star has composed Linus’s collection of original material and sings lead vocals (+ rhythm guitar). She grew up in Montana listening to the full range of music – from Nirvana to Grimes and Beethoven. Kelsey seeks to bring an innovative sound to Missoula’s music scene while showing that women can rock and shred with the guys.
‘but i’m a cheerleader’ is a band comprised of three nice queers living in Missoula, MT and all of their repressed feelings. They invite you into all their sweetness and rage expressed through song (if you’re into that kind of thing). Masks are required for attendees for all Show Room events at this time. Masks may be removed for beverage consumption, but we ask that they please be worn at any time when not actively drinking. Intice + Ceres + Spencer! And the Hornadotes!
Zootown Arts Community Center
216 West Main Street, Missoula, Montana
$10 To purchase advance tickets visit: https://showroom.zootownarts.org/…/intice-ceres…/
Originally from Great Falls, MT, Intice (Cameron Kinney, Justin Brantley, Josh Smith, Lane Ulberg, Cade Chastain, Jolene Greene) aims to create intricately arranged compositions that are still heavy and approachable. Each band member brings unique influences such as jazz, metal, pop, and western/eastern art music. Their live sets are meticulously arranged, eclectic, and high energy.
Ceres is heavy metal from the mountains of Western Montana, with hard hitting rhythms, driving riffs, and a mix of melodic and aggressive vocals. Ceres won the Missoulian’s award for ‘Best New Band’ in 2019, and they are excited to get back to LIVE music after a long, hard 2020.
Spencer! And the Hornadotes! bring kick-a$$ rock n roll to the mix. Now with horns! Some would call this group louder than just one person playing by themselves … they would be right.
Masks are required for attendees for all Show Room events at this time. Masks may be removed for beverage consumption, but we ask that they please be worn at any time when not actively drinking. Known for her work with Elephant 6 psych pop group, The Essex Green, and New York baroque ensemble Ladybug Transistor – Sasha Bell is a multi-faceted performer and musician most heralded for her melodious voice and lithe instrumentation.
Tiny Iota writes tiny songs that scream like a dust mite into the eternal abyss.
Rob Travolta will drop your jaw, with captivatingly composed tunes that balance Rob’s Midwest emo meets Montana vibe – with drummer Cole Bronson’s knack for hip hop in smooth and enthralling pockets of groove. The talent and focus of the duo, not to mention the emotion they channel into their music performing, makes for a remarkable sonic journey of angst and joy.

ABOUT BIG HEAD TODD AND THE MONSTERS
Big Head Todd and The Monsters have quietly become an American institution following three and a half decades of writing, recording, and touring (totaling over 3,500 performances). After countless sold out shows in amphitheaters and on the high seas, beaming their tunes to outer space (literally), earning the endorsement of everyone from Robert Plant to The Denver Broncos, and tallying tens of millions of streams, Big Head Todd and The Monsters cite the friendships formed in the crowd among their proudest accomplishments. Fast forward to 2021 and the Colorado quartet—Todd Park Mohr [vocals, guitar, keys, sax, harmonica], Brian Nevin [drums, percussion], Rob Squires [bass, vocals], and Jeremy Lawton [guitar, keys, vocals, steel guitar]—continue to unite audiences.

Folk Night: The Pettifoggers + Dusty The Kid + Larysa Blavatsky
Zootown Arts Community Center
216 W Main Street, Missoula, Montana
$10 – To purchase advance tickets visit: https://showroom.zootownarts.org/…/folk-night-the…/
The Pettifoggers have been drifting in the spirit world since time immemorial, but now that the time of the orc has come, they have manifested their physical forms to meld music from the old country with new Americana. When they are not communing with the pedalboard, they can be found skulking in lumber yards and writing poetry.
Dusty The Kid is a folk singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist. With a sound that wanders from the railyard to the hills of Connemara and back again, The Kid’s modern take on struggle songs seeks to return folk music to its revolutionary roots, and hopefully the folks along with it.
Larysa Blavatsky is a multi-talented musician with a folk-pop sensibility. She’s a violinist, pianist, guitarist, organist, and vocalist who was raised in Butte, where she began her musical journey. She’s now in her last year studying music education and violin performance at the UM School of Music.
