Weekend PICKS: Thursday, July 21st thru Sunday, July 24th

The weekend is here! The MUG has compiled the most comprehensive list of events in Missoula and around Western Montana, all right here for you to make your own Weekend PICKS.
We’re counting over 90 music shows of one kind or another in the area. We’ve got options!
Farmers markets season is in full swing in Western Montana. You’ll find ’em here, and for a complete list of nearly three dozen in the area, check out our comprehensive Western Montana Farmers Markets story on The MUG.
No matter what direction you wanna get outta town, you can’t go wrong. Activities and events are happening not only around Missoula, but all the way up the Flathead and the Bitterroot valleys, east to Phillipsburg and Anaconda, and out west past Alberton.
Get out and enjoy our locally-owned bars & restaurants with Montana grown / made food and beverages. Support our local farmers and crafts people. Catch a classic movie screening or a stand-up comedy night. Stretch that big brain at one of the local trivia nights. Sing your favorite karaoke song, or catch a live music show. Enjoy safely and responsibly.
Please confirm event details at the source before you go. Last minute changes are common, especially due to weather. With each event listing, we try to include a web page or event link with more information you can check for changes.

Stephen Wilson Jr. + Wailing Aaron Jennings
Zootown Arts Community Center
216 W. Main Street, Missoula, Montana
$10 in Advance // $13 Day of Show
To purchase advance tickets visit: https://showroom.zootownarts.org/…/stephen-wilson-jr…/
Stephen Wilson Jr. is a singer/songwriter from rural Southern Indiana. Wilson was raised by a single father who was a boxer and had him boxing from age seven through adulthood as an Indiana State Golden Gloves finalist. Wilson, a self-taught guitarist moved to Nashville to pursue a degree in Microbiology at MTSU. There, he started indie rock band AutoVaughn after finishing his degree. They toured for over five years and Wilson co-wrote songs as lead guitarist until his creative focus turned more to songwriting and singing. After the band, Wilson relied back on his education where he worked for several years as an R&D scientist at Mars until signing a publishing deal with BMG Nashville in Aug 2016. He is currently building his catalogue and has had songs cut by Caitlyn Smith and Old Dominion, Tim McGraw, Trace Adkins, Chase Bryant, Mackenzie Porter, Kameron Marlow, Sixpence None the Richer and Leigh Nash. https://www.stephenwilsonjrmusic.com/
Wailing Aaron Jennings songs champion the traditions of Honky Tonk and Western Swing while giving a knowing wink and a nod to the modern world. Every song is a story. Whether it’s a rambling waltzing exposition, a dance tune punctuated with acrobatic yodels, or a rockin’ boogie woogie – the ghosts of the past are jumping, shouting and dancing right along with Wailing Aaron Jennings (and YOU!). Jennings has performed across the Northwest at Breweries, Dive Bars, Vineyards, Guest Ranches, Hot Springs, Campgrounds, Underpasses, Historic Chapels, Farm Parties, Pool Parties, Birthday Parties, Theaters, and Nudist Colonies. Memorable anecdotes, old jokes, and older songs are all part of the journey for him, and at the end of the night: if it feels like the ghosts of the past are dancing arm in arm with you and your hopes for the future? Well that’s just dandy. http://wailingjennings.com/

Lard Butt 1K Run
Silver Park
700 Cregg Lane, Missoula, Montana
Missoula’s second Lard Butt 1K (yes, that is a 1K, or 0.62 miles) is set for Saturday, July 23, at Silver Park (NOON start / 10:30 am opening).
Instead of traditional water stations, the Lard Butt 1K features donut stations every 250 meters, replaces timing chips with chocolate chips, and hosts a well-stocked beer garden before and after the 1K itself. Along with a canned-food drive, there will be a “Spirit of Lard Butt” costume party, an on-site soundtrack and numerous other surprises.
There are four ways to attack the grueling, flat one-kilometer (0.62 mile) course:
• Show-off Wave: For those with the audacity to run (expect heckling from race marshals and spectators);
• Legends Wave: For those 250 pounds and heavier;
• Waddlers Wave: For the rest of us;
• Kids Dash: For those 10 and younger.
The walk/run/waddle starts at NOON on July 23, with day-of registration opening at 10:30 am, and the Beer Garden opening at 11:00.
Advance Registration is $30 at www.lardbutt.com, covering event entry, a Lard Butt 1K Tee-Shirt, one beer or mimosa for those 21 and over, along with other foods and on-site surprises. Week – and day-of registration costs increase to $40.

Artist Presentation: Actor Bill Bowers
Philipsburg Theatre
140 S Sansome St, Philipsburg, Montana
Join us at the upstairs bar the hour before the event to meet the artist and mingle. This event is free and open to the public.
Registration encouraged: https://form.jotform.com/221855730629057
About the Artist: As an actor, mime and educator, Bill Bowers has traveled and performed throughout all 50 of the United States, Europe, and Asia. His Broadway credits include Zazu in The Lion King, and Leggett in The Scarlet Pimpernel. A student of the legendary Marcel Marceau, Bill is hailed by critics as one of the great mimes of our generation. An award-winning performer and playwright, Bill’s work has garnered top honors and rave reviews worldwide, including The Edinburgh Festival Fringe, International Thespis Festival in Germany, MonoMafia in Estonia, United Solo in NYC and Poland, the Fresh Fruit Festival, the Nature Festival of Korea, among others. His original plays include All Over the Map, Beyond Words, Under a Montana Moon, It Goes Without Saying, Heyokah/Hokehay, Johnny Got His Gun, and The Traveler. Bill is currently working on his memoir and has been awarded fellowships at the Hermitage, The Eugene O’Neill Foundation, Ohio University, University of Wyoming, Williams College and Princeton University. “To watch Bill Bowers is to see the technical elements of a style that brings Marcel Marceau readily to mind, joined to the American West. Mime can be wonderful – the air between him and us is his palette.” New York Times Bill is featured in the film Two Weeks Notice, and on television in Disney’s Out of the Box, Remember W.E.N.N, All My Children, the PBS adaptation of Peter and the Wolf, and the PBS documentary series Brief But Spectacular. Bill holds an MFA from Rutgers University’s Mason Gross School of the Arts, and an Honorary PhD from Rocky Mountain College.

Kenan Flannery & Isaac Elliot
Perfect Shot Tavern
218 Main Street, Polson, Montana
“Kenan Flannery’s is praised as having a voice that hits you with the intensity of a hundred Irish poets and musicians”. Kenan Flannery is a 23 year old IYMA’s award winning folk songwriter from Dublin, Ireland. His music is a fusion dance of his deep love for Americana folk music from the likes of Townes Van Zandt and Blaze Foley mixed with his Irish roots in storytelling and ballads inspired by The Dubliners and The Wolfe Tones.
Kenan is humorous and a little bit quirky. His live shows are truly one of a kind and his unique style of music and showmanship makes him one of Ireland’s gems in the rough.
Isaac Elliott is a 34 year old troubadour, folk songwriter/storyteller born and raised on the Cherokee Reservation of Oklahoma, from a young age his father introduced him to the poetic words of John Prine which led him down the wild and wonderful road of music. After spending a decade in service, he began discovering his own love from Folk and Americana music. This began in the music circles of the Woody Guthrie Folk Fest and now he spends his time performing in any bar, coffee shop and brewery that will have him.

Zootown Arts Community Center

To purchase advance tickets visit: https://showroom.zootownarts.org/…/playdoh-presents…/
*This show contains mature themes that may not be appropriate for all audiences.
The Cave of Despacito, presented by Playdoh, is a one-person variety puppet show reimagining Plato’s Allegory of the Cave in a contemporary multiverse of comedic sketches. You can expect to inhabit a new reality where America is a Buffalo Wild Wings franchise, a post apocalyptic cult necromances a celebrity moose, you are attacked by a rabid email who is out for blood, and attend a Despacito-themed conference that makes you question our obsession with consuming media. The show has been performed at many venues all the way up the coast from Atlanta to Vermont. Check out Playdoh’s IG for Tour Highlights + Show clips: @nosepickah.
