Weekend PICKS: Thursday, July 28th thru Sunday, July 31st

The last weekend of July is here! The MUG has compiled the most comprehensive list of events in Missoula and around Western Montana, all right here for you to make your own Weekend PICKS.
We’re counting over 80 music shows of one kind or another in the area. We’ve got options!
Big summer festivals are happening, including the Daly Days in Hamilton, the Polson Main Street Flathead Cherry Festival, Philipsburg Flint Creek Valley Days, and Rockin’ the Glacier Music Festival & Car Show up in Coram.
Farmers markets season is in full swing in Western Montana. You’ll find ’em here, and for a complete list of nearly three dozen in the area, check out our comprehensive Western Montana Farmers Markets story on The MUG.
No matter what direction you wanna get outta town, you can’t go wrong. Activities and events are happening not only around Missoula, but all the way up the Flathead and the Bitterroot valleys, east to Phillipsburg and Anaconda, and out west past Alberton.
Get out and enjoy our locally-owned bars & restaurants with Montana grown / made food and beverages. Support our local farmers and crafts people. Go float! Catch a classic movie screening or a stand-up comedy night. Stretch that big brain at one of the local trivia nights. Sing your favorite karaoke song, or catch a live music show. Enjoy safely and responsibly.
Please confirm event details at the source before you go. Last minute changes are common, especially due to weather. With each event listing, we try to include a web page or event link with more information you can check for changes.

Sera Cahoone + Margo Cilker w/ Night Palace
Zootown Arts Community Center
216 W. Main Street, Missoula, Montana
$15 (Advance tix recommended) w/ Night Palace
For advance tickets visit: https://showroom.zootownarts.org/…/sera-cahoone-margo…/
Americana singer-songwriter Sera Cahoone grew up in the Colorado foothills. The daughter of a dynamite salesman, she played her first gigs on drums in a dive bar’s open blues jams at 12. As a young adult, she moved to Seattle where she played drums with the adored indie rock group, Carissa’s Wierd, and later Band of Horses. She then went on to release four solo records, two with Sub Pop. In 2019, Cahoone received a Gold Record for her work with Band of Horses.
Cahoone has earned great praise from KEXP, NPR series Tiny Desk Concert, First Listen and Songs We Love. Her work has been featured on UPROXX, ELLE and KEXP. But not only do her songs ring out in rooms of mile-high castles and the edges of sprawling forests, Cahoone is beloved by her fans. Her audiences are filled with the curious, the seekers, and those who just want to hear her sing once more, “I wanna be your sidewalk / I’ll take you everywhere/ We’ll travel ‘round this world a million times.”
Margo Cilker is a woman who drinks deeply of life, and her debut record Pohorylle, released in November 2021 on Portland label Fluff and Gravy, is brimming with it. For the last seven years, the Eastern Oregon songwriter, who NPR calls one of “11 Oregon Artists to Watch in 2021,” has split her time between the road and various outposts across the world, from Enterprise, OR to the Basque Country of Spain, forging a path that is at once deeply rooted and ever-changing.
Night Palace’s (ATHENS, GA / NYC) debut album Diving Rings is a shocking alchemy: aching nostalgia meets frothy anticipation of what’s beyond the garden wall. Tantalizing pop melodies take wing with lush instrumentation, weaving a reedy bed for songwriter Avery Draut’s shimmering vocals. It’s hard to believe the album is not a soundtrack to . . . something. You find yourself picturing it: a moonlit-gilded diorama of Draut’s dreams and memories. Spanning eleven songs and interludes, Diving Rings ebbs and flows through tracks like “Enjoy the Moon!” dubbed by AllMusic Editor’s Choice, “a song that sounds like a lost Pet Sounds track played by Broadcast;” grounded indie-rock songs “Into the Wake, Mystified” and “Stranger Powers;” and the celeste-gilded folk song “Titania.”
Paste Magazine encapsulates the now Athens, Georgia and NYC-based act’s sound: “Diving Rings wraps freak-folk energy in a lush psych-pop package.” The album was released on April 1 via Park the Van.

Pinocchio
Missoula Center for the Performing Arts
200 N. Adams, Missoula, Montana
Geppetto fashioned a puppet in the image of a small boy. Even as the lonely and kind woodcarver worked far into the night, old Geppetto was not aware that the wood under the chisel had come from the trunk of an enchanted tree. But the Blue Fairy was aware, as she watched from afar and gave to that puppet the gift of life.
Thus, begins the Missoula Children’s Theatre adaptation of one of the most beloved of all children’s stories – PINOCCHIO.
Join our wooden-head as he dances with Geppetto’s charming toys, travels the road to Pleasure Isle with Candlewick and his Crew, and is swindled by the unsavory Fox and Cat.
After escaping the clutches of the evil puppet master, Stromboli, Pinocchio finds himself in trouble once more–this time swallowed by a monstrous whale. Very scary stuff!
As Geppetto and the friendly Urchins spin their magical tale, we learn with Pinocchio that there are no shortcuts on the road to becoming a real, live boy.

That’s why we’re bringing Monkey, a third wave ska band from the San Francisco Bay Area with some serious ska street cred whose musical influences include the Skatalites, Prince Buster, the Specials to the ZACC Show Room for one night only. Fáilte Montana Irish Festival
Caras Park
123 Carousel Drive, Missoula, Montana
The Fáilte Montana Irish Festival brings awareness to the University of Montana’s Irish Studies program and the cultural and learning opportunities provided by the Friends of Irish Studies in the West. By increasing our visibility and bringing together our community, we are able to bolster our fundraising efforts to continue supporting scholars, athletes, artists and performers.
Fáilte Montana is meant to be inclusive and welcoming of those in and traveling to Montana while participating in the preservation and promotion of Irish cultural practices (many of them dating back to prehistoric times). Musicians, dancers, hurlers and vendors from Montana will be largely featured, with a special performance by our headlining band JigJam—an Irish-born group that fuses traditional Irish music with American folk music.
This is a free, family friendly community event!
