Weekend PICKS: Thursday, June 2nd thru Sunday, June 5th
Well, hello June! Montana, you are looking especially fetching right now.
The MUG has compiled the most comprehensive list of this weekend’s events in Missoula and around Western Montana, all right here for you to make your own Weekend PICKS. It is springtime, and it is glorious here. Let’s see…
Downtown Tonight makes its summer season debut Thursday at Caras Park – food trucks and live music from Russ Nasset and the Revelators is a great launch to the weekend.
First Friday is happening in Downtown Missoula, along with a number of our other area communities including Hamilton and Stevensville, highlighting art, music and food in local businesses.
Pride Weekend is top to bottom, side to side all weekend in Missoula. Nearly every venue is celebrating with music, food, and beverage specials to commemorate the occasion. For a complete listing of all Missoula Pride Week events, click HERE.
Outdoor activities are poppin’…If you’re into mountain biking (and around here, that’s just about everyone), Friday is MTCX’s annual Mullet Classic at Marshall Mountain Park. It’s the best party on two wheels, and a great excuse to get up to Marshall and just enjoy it up there. There’s rodeo worth making the drive to Darby on Saturday and Sunday.
We’re counting a solid 70 music shows of one kind or another in the area. We’ve got options!
Farmers markets season is well underway in Western Montana. Several more are opening this weekend. You’ll find ’em here, and for a complete list of over 2 dozen in the area, check out our Western Montana Farmers Markets story posted recently on The MUG.
No matter what direction you wanna get outta town, you can’t go wrong. Activities and events are happening not only around Missoula, but all the way up the Flathead and the Bitterroot valleys, east to Phillipsburg and Anaconda, and out west past Alberton.
Get out and enjoy our locally-owned bars & restaurants with Montana grown / made food and beverages. Support our local farmers and crafts people. Catch a classic movie screening or a stand-up comedy night. Stretch that big brain at one of the local trivia nights. Sing your favorite karaoke song, or catch a live music show. Enjoy safely and responsibly.
Please confirm event details at the source before you go. Last minute changes are common, especially due to weather. With each event listing, we try to include a web page or event link with more information you can check for changes.

First Friday Artwalk
FINN
100 Madison Street, Missoula, Montana
Start your artwalk at the river with cocktails, complimentary appetizers & live music with Andrew Huppert. Featured artist is Missoula local, McKayla Hoedel.
McKayla Hoedel is an artist living and working in her hometown of Missoula where she is inspired by the natural world and how it blends seamlessly into quotidian life. She was drawn to art from a young age, taking classes throughout high school and college. A graduate of UofM, she hopes to continue her education into ways of combining the human experience with the markedly human experience of creating art.
McKayla’s work spans different mediums often combining multiple elements in a single piece. For many years, false notions of what is and is not considered “fine art” prevented her from experimenting with her work—and in turn truly knowing herself. Working through the pitfalls of mental health has been instrumental in her creative process and finding beauty in pain has long been a part of artistic discussion. McKayla’s work emphasizes that there is beauty in recovery. By employing botanical imagery, the human body, and an occasional embroidery thread, she pays homage to her psyche and the countless small joys that make “this mess” worth sorting through.

First Friday with Ren Nation Originals
Betty V Vintage
104 East Main Street, Missoula, Montana
“I studied studio art from 2012 – 2014 but have been practicing and creating since I was small, and I’m sure many of my past lives as well.
Everything I create represents an experience, a vision/idea, or a reflection of how I saw the world in a particular moment.
My goal is for you, the viewer/owner, to feel. I want you to feel open, free, curious, nostalgic, and hopeful. To be reminded of the beauty of life on Earth.
My inspirations of late include the human form, nature, mindfulness, fantasy, and the joy and beauty that is always available to us. I have been experimenting with size, medium, color, texture, as well as canvas (I often use recycled materials that inspire me). Every piece is different from the last as I let inspiration and spirit guide. I hope you enjoy my creations; please reach out with questions or comments, I’d love to chat!” – Lauren

Highlander Beer
200 International Drive, Missoula, Montana
Jimmy Smith and Pat McKay bring their POWER DUO to Highlander in celebration of their new album, On the Smile Side!
Two man band that’s as full as a 4 piece. Ex-Gourds co-frontman Jimmy Smith and bluesman Pat McKay with drum stomping, guitar banging and vocalizing old Gourd, HardPans, Slo-Red faves and whatever’s on the Smitty madness menu this week.
Jimmy is best known for his 2 decades performing with famed Austin, TX alt-country outfit, The Gourds, as one of the two principal songwriters and bass player. Alongside Kevin “Shinyribs” Russell, Max Johnston (formerly of Wilco), Claude Bernard and Keith Langford, the band relentlessly toured the country, playing every festival stage imaginable and recording with the likes of Doug Sahm and long-time Bob Dylan sideman, Larry Campbell. Though their days as a band came to an end in 2013, Jimmy has continued playing music as The Hard Pans, the Jimmy Smith System and most recently as a power duo in Smith-McKay All Day. He currently resides in Missoula, MT, longtime 2nd home to The Gourds. Please check out the website for more information. https://www.smithmckayallday.com/
