Weekend PICKS: Thursday, March 31st thru Sunday, April 3rd

Get ready! We’ve compiled the most comprehensive list of this weekend’s events in Missoula and around Western Montana, all right here for you to make your own April Fool’s Weekend PICKS.
The first weekend of April, no foolin’! It’s gonna be spring-like with chilly mornings, and highs in the 50’s. Chance of a little rain on Saturday, but nothing worth staying home for.
“Mud season” is already drying out, and many of our local ski areas to continue with respectable spring skiing conditions. Some even with fresh powder this week. Check the links here for current conditions at Snowbowl, Lost Trail, Whitefish, Blacktail and Discovery. TNR is already into the MTB phase for the Thursday Night Rides, and continuing to venture out to the trails on the sunny sides that are dry enough to ride. Good rule: don’t ride if you’ll be leaving big ruts, whether it’s snowy or muddy. It’s early; be patient.
We’re counting around 65 live music shows of one kind or another in the area. We challenge you to find another part of the country with such a high level of local music to choose from. The Wilma is rockin’ with big shows all weekend, with Drowning Pool on Thursday, a sold-out show with Beach House on Friday, and Clutch on Saturday.
The winter markets on Saturdays are still happening to get your local craft shopping fix handled.
No matter what direction you wanna get outta town, you can’t go wrong. Activities and events are happening not only around Missoula, but all the way up the Flathead and the Bitterroot valleys, and Phillipsburg.
Get out and enjoy our locally-owned bars & restaurants with Montana grown / made food and beverages. Catch a classic movie screening or a stand-up comedy night. Stretch that big brain at one of the local trivia nights. Sing your favorite karaoke song, or catch a live music show. Enjoy safely and responsibly.
Please confirm event details at the source before you go. Last minute changes are common, especially due to weather. With each event listing, we try to include a web page or event link with more information you can check for changes.

Beach House – **SOLD OUT**
The Wilma
131 Higgins Avenue, Missoula, Montana
ABOUT BEACH HOUSE
Beach House is Victoria LeGrand, lead singer and multi-instrumentalist, and Ales Scally, guitarist and multi-instrumentalist. They write all of their songs together.
Once Twice Melody, the new album, was Produced entirely by Beach House, a first for the band. Like their previous record 7, the live drums are by James Barone. Live drums were recorded at Pachyderm studio in Minnesota and United Studio in LA. The Writing and Recording of Once Twice Melody began in 2018 and was completed in July 2021. Most of the songs were created during this time, though a few date back over the previous 10 years. Much of this recording was done at Apple Orchard Studio in Baltimore.
Across the 18 Songs, many types of style, song structure, and spirit can be heard; Songs without drums, Songs centered around acoustic guitar, mostly electronic songs with no guitar, wandering melodies, repetitive melodies, songs built around the string sections. While there are a lot of new sounds, many of the drum machines, organs, keyboards, and tones that listeners may associate with previous Beach House records are still present throughout many of the compositions.

Amrita “Ami” Kaur Dang is a South Asian-American, Sikh composer, music producer, vocalist and sitarist from Baltimore. Combining ideas from South Asian music with synthesizers, MIDI controllers, lighting design and gestural movement, her work invites the audience to reframe their assumptions about the colonial history of music, the arts, technology, and performance and its place in the contemporary musical landscape.
Dang studied voice and sitar in New Delhi and Maryland from a young age, and she also holds a bachelor’s degree in Technology in Music & Related Arts from Oberlin College Conservatory of Music. She has performed throughout North America, Asia, and Europe and has released five solo albums. She collaborates with cellist Alexa Richardson as Raw Silk and is a member of new age/ambient group Galdre Visions. She has received two Individual Artist Awards from the Maryland State Arts Council, and she is a 2020 Baker Artist Award winner. Her work has received accolades from The Guardian, The Washington Post, Spin, and Pitchfork, to name a few.

On April 2, 2022, the Zootown Arts Community Center (ZACC) will celebrate its 10th Annual Mini Show Benefit Auction in the newly renovated Commercial Building at the Missoula County Fairgrounds. For our beloved Mini Show’s 10-year anniversary, we’ve secured this giant, beautifully updated space in order to share the celebration with everyone who has helped us achieve this milestone. The Mini Show always brings together Missoula’s creative community to celebrate the arts and show their support for the ZACC, and this year we’re excited to continue that tradition at the Missoula County Fairgrounds. We’ve fully embraced our new location with the theme ‘Vintage Carnival’. Guests at the 10th Annual Mini Show will enjoy a ‘big top’ experience in the Commercial Building, complete with carnival games and characters. We’re hoping to see folks dressed in red and white, experimenting with face paint, and perhaps even musing on the petting zoo for inspiration in their attire. In addition to the festive atmosphere and catered dinner, the event will feature an expansive art exhibit with silent and live auctions, a dessert auction, a cash bar, and live entertainment from a cast composed of longtime supporters and new friends. The 2022 Mini Show will truly be a welcome social experience after a long, cooped-up winter.

The Benevolents + Transcendental Express + Apollo Suns
Monk’s Bar Missoula
221 Ryman Street, Missoula, Montana
Born from the fusing of nine Winnipeg, Canada based musicians, Apollo Suns have created a refreshing and innovative sound and live performance combining instrumental, jazz, rock and psychedelic music. They were awarded “Instrumental Artist of the Year” at the 2018 and 2020 Western Canadian Music Awards.
Apollo Suns began in 2016 following the deconstruction of Ed Durocher (Guitar) and Dave Guenette’s (bass) previous band Electric Soul. Over the years the band has seen a large rotation of some very talented and have now solidified the core group of Glenn Radley (Drums), Erika Einarson (Percussion), Niall Cade (Tenor Sax), Bryn Herperger (Bass), Garrett Malenko (Trumpet), Benjamin James Hill (Trombone), Aaron Bartel (Bari Sax) and Anatol Rennie (Keyboards/Synths).
Transcendental Express is a sonic experience that transcends genre; from jazz, funk to Samba, this band seamlessly incorporates it all. The sultry guitar solos are Santana-esque, the piano and organ work provide a perfect punctuation to an already rich story told through music. The hypnotic saxophone solos take the listener on a voyage through jazz history as they echo elements of various cultures and worlds. The rhythm section is the thread holding it all together to complete this truly transcendent experience.
The Benevolents are John Kratz, guitar, Hiram Mariner, bass, Michael Calucchia, mandolin, Holly Riley, violin, and Daniel Kiely on drums. They blend a variety of musical styles including folk, rock, and world music to create a unique sound all their own.

Humbird (Quartet)
Longstaff House
601 Longstaff Street, Missoula, Montana
Humbird (Siri Undlin) is a Minneapolis based singer-songwriter, poet, and storyteller inspired by the crystalline chill of her home state’s northern winters. Undlin twines experimental folk, environmental Americana, and orchestral compositions to forge an explorative embodiment of the narrative folk song and balladry tradition. Released in September 2019, her debut full length album, Pharmakon, engineered by Brian Joseph (Bon Iver, Sufjan Stevens) and produced by Shane Leonard (Field Report), has been received with remarkable critical acclaim and has amassed nearly 20 million streams since its release. Folk Alley listed “Pharmakon” as one of their favorite songs of 2019 and at the end of week one, the album ranked #19 on the top NACC music charts and by week two was at #1 on the Folk charts – one of only two self-released albums to chart. Most recently she won the 2021 Kerrville Folk Festival’s song-writing competition was able to perform a set at the 49th annual festival this fall. Fall 2021 will be peppered with regional Midwest dates and a release of Humbird’s third studio album, Still Life.
A Humbird live performance is intimate and earthy, literal and metaphorical. The band nimbly prances around the lilt of Undlin’s unfaltering fervent and haunting voice – the focal point. Although the songs and stories hold their own, the embellishments the band supply add the perfect splash of timbre and color to deliver a dynamic and engaging performance.
Humbird performs solo and as a trio (drums/percussion and double bass/electric bass).
