Weekend PICKS: Thursday, May 19th thru Sunday, May 22nd
What’s going on this weekend? The MUG has compiled the most comprehensive list of this weekend’s events in Missoula and around Western Montana, all right here for you to make your own Weekend PICKS. It is springtime, and it is glorious here. Let’s see…
The annual Maggotfest weekend returns to Missoula! We’d try to describe it, but you just have to be here to experience it. There’s fierce and physical rugby, there are some world championship levels of beverage consumption, and more shenanigans than we can keep track of. Just go check it out.
Friday night is the Bacon and Brewfest at Caras Park. Those go together like Forrest and Jenn-nay, like peas and carrots, like…well, you know.
Farmers markets season is well underway in Western Montana. You’ll find ’em here, and for a complete list of over 2 dozen in the area, check out our Western Montana Farmers Markets story posted recently on The MUG.
We’re counting at least 85 music shows of one kind or another in the area. We’ve got options!
No matter what direction you wanna get outta town, you can’t go wrong. Activities and events are happening not only around Missoula, but all the way up the Flathead and the Bitterroot valleys, east to Phillipsburg and Anaconda, and out west past Alberton.
Get out and enjoy our locally-owned bars & restaurants with Montana grown / made food and beverages. Support our local farmers and crafts people. Catch a classic movie screening or a stand-up comedy night. Stretch that big brain at one of the local trivia nights. Sing your favorite karaoke song, or catch a live music show. Enjoy safely and responsibly.
Please confirm event details at the source before you go. Last minute changes are common, especially due to weather. With each event listing, we try to include a web page or event link with more information you can check for changes.

Horse Feathers / MAITA
The ZACC
216 W Main Street, Missoula, Montana
$15 For advance tickets visit: https://showroom.zootownarts.org/event/horse-feathers-maita/
Horse Feathers, and their re-imagined string ensemble of seasoned players are returning to the road in the spring of 2022 in support of their April, Kill Rock Stars re-issue of their 2008 breakthrough release “House With No Home.” Justin Ringle and longtime violinist Nathan Crockett will be backed by new additions of upright bass (Luke Ydstie: The Hackles, Blind Pilot), banjo (Kati Claborn: The Hackles, Blind Pilot) and violin (Halli Anderson: River Whyless). The group will be performing selections from “House With No Home” as well as old favorites, highlighting the acoustic characteristics of earlier orchestral arrangements as well as the energy of recent releases.
MAITA Growing up in Oregon splitting time between her mom’s Japanese-speaking home and her father’s English-speaking home, Maita-Keppeler found an expressive avenue out of her shyness through music. “I was getting so much out of songwriters like Elliott Smith, Feist, and Cat Power at a point when I really needed them,” she says. That fiery devotion brought her to perform at open mics in college, to connect with other people through art. Along with guitarist/producer Matthew Zeltzer, bassist Nevada Sowle, and multi-instrumentalist Cooper Trail, the Portland-based singer-songwriter tapped into that intimate longing, recording I Just Want To Be Wild For You in a recording studio located in the basement of a church.

About Citizen Cope
Citizen Cope aka Clarence Greenwood is an American songwriter/producer. He has released seven studio LPs that have garnered him a loyal following despite never being fully embraced by mainstream media and commercial radio. Describing his music is difficult, he’s been inspired by artists such as John Lennon and Stevie Wonder to Bob Marley and Outkast. Citizen Cope’s compositions have been recorded by Carlos Santana, Dido, and Richie Havens. In 20 years of touring, he has built a devout following, performing at sold-out theaters and ballrooms across the country. Over time, Cope’s music has become the soundtrack to the lives of those who have embraced it and he continues to inspire audiences through what can only be described as a deep personal connection.

Dusty Bandita Gravel Bike Race
Camp Paxson
4200 Boy Scout Road, Seeley Lake, Montana
The Dusty Bandita is a women’s gravel race built not only to expand our presence in a male-dominated sport of bike racing, but to inspire women to go beyond their limits, physically and mentally – dig deep, climb the big climbs, and take the inside line. The distance options available are for the racer or adventurer alike.
We want to instill the feeling of freedom and confidence while we broaden the field of women cyclists throughout the local area, state, and nation. Come ride for the experience, the personal challenge, and the spirit of competition. Let’s rally together, fellow Bandita’s, while exploring on two wheels; don’t look back, we’re forging forward! See you at the starting line!
Routes are near Seeley Lake and Missoula where we feel has some of the best gravel roads around.
Event start / home base will be Camp Paxson located on Seeley Lake!
About an hour northeast of Missoula. A beautiful camp with primitive cabins and tent camping available to add-on at registration, and access to kayaks, lake, horseshoes, volleyball, basketball.
We’re limited to 100 racers this year and anticipate it filling quickly.
The Dusty Bandita is partnered with MT Alpha Cycling! MT Alpha Cycling is a women’s and girls cycling team based out of Missoula, MT. They are a non-profit organization dedicated to getting more women and girls on bikes through group rides, skills clinics, coaching, and riding in events/races. The team has grown significantly since they established in 2012, starting with about 12 adult members, now with over 100 members! And the wonderful part is that it doesn’t stop there.
We love MT Alpha and can’t wait to see their continued growth for all women, juniors and adults alike.
Proceeds from The Dusty Bandita will go to MT Alpha Cycling so they can further their mission within the community and beyond!
