Weekend PICKS: Thursday, May 26th thru Monday, May 30th

Oh, my. A nice long Memorial Day weekend ahead, and what to do? The MUG has compiled the most comprehensive list over five days worth of this holiday weekend’s events in Missoula and around Western Montana, all right here for you to make your own Weekend PICKS. It is springtime, and it is glorious here. Let’s see…
We’re counting a solid 90 music shows of one kind or another in the area. We’ve got options! There’s a new concert venue in Bigfork, premiering the Crown Jewel Concert Series – Eric Alan & The Gold Sisters.
Farmers markets season is well underway in Western Montana. Several have their opening this weekend. You’ll find ’em here, and for a complete list of over 2 dozen in the area, check out our Western Montana Farmers Markets story posted recently on The MUG.
Outdoor activities are poppin’…mountain biking, running, etc. The annual Whitewater Festival is happening all weekend in Bigfork. There’s tons to do and see, with live music accompanying on Saturday and Sunday. The Montana Jr. High School Rodeo Finals are in Darby from Friday through Sunday. There’s the Two Day Northwest Modifieds Race Weekend at Mission Valley Super Oval in Polson.
It’s back! – MisCon is a 4-day celebration of fantasy, science fiction, and horror that takes over the Holiday Inn Missoula Downtown every Memorial Day Weekend.
And of course, Monday is Memorial Day. Take a minute, or the day, to meditate on the remembrance of those who died in service to our amazing country. Things may not be perfect here, but we still have a better way of life than most; without our service members, it would not be the place we know and love. We have observances listed for Missoula, Corvallis and Kalispell. Seek one out and pay some respect.
Monday night closes out the weekend with Halestorm, Stone Temple Pilots and Black Stone Cherry in concert at the KettleHouse Ampitheater. It’s finally summer concert season, and we’re happy.
No matter what direction you wanna get outta town, you can’t go wrong. Activities and events are happening not only around Missoula, but all the way up the Flathead and the Bitterroot valleys, east to Phillipsburg and Anaconda, and out west past Alberton.
Get out and enjoy our locally-owned bars & restaurants with Montana grown / made food and beverages. Support our local farmers and crafts people. Catch a classic movie screening or a stand-up comedy night. Stretch that big brain at one of the local trivia nights. Sing your favorite karaoke song, or catch a live music show. Enjoy safely and responsibly.
Please confirm event details at the source before you go. Last minute changes are common, especially due to weather. With each event listing, we try to include a web page or event link with more information you can check for changes.

~~~~~~~~~SHARK BUFFALO~~~~~~~~~~
Who the hell is Shark Buffalo, that mysterious übergroup from a long-forgotten Missoula music scene of yore? More importantly, what the hell IS a shark buffalo? Do you picture a buffalo’s body with a shark’s head, like some kind of aquatic centaur? Or do you prefer to envision an elasmobranch fish characterized by a cartilaginous skeleton fused with the head and torso of a bearded bovinae? I digress. Shark Buffalo is comprised of a holy musical trinity: Keys, Drums, and Trumpet, with Cove Jasmin, Emmet Ore, and Nathan Crawford.
~~~~~~~~~MIRROR GODS~~~~~~~~~~~~
Mirror Gods is a powerful quartet comprised of Jesse The Ocelot on vox/guitar/loops, Joshua Chai on drums/percussion, Sean Howard Burress on bass/gadgets, and Emmet Ore on guitar/keys. Mirror Gods create the perfect mix of organic and electronic music. Jesse’s ethereal vocals sore over Sean and Josh’s intricate rhythmic bass lines, while Emmet dazzles in with magical lead guitar. They are a full on rock band with atmospheric loops and layers. Making sure to let the music speak for itself and lead the way, they try to create something different every time, with about half of their songs being dialed-in performances and the other half being all about the feels and improv. You never know what’s going to happen at a Mirror Gods show.

The weather forecast is calling for Cars & Coffee. Super excited to be kicking off the year with a new location! Keep in mind that we may use the Rosauers location from time to time. A big thank you to J&K Customs for offering to host Cars & Coffee! Be respectful of their store and parking lot while we are there. There will be coffee as well on a first-come-first-served basis. Depending on the turnout we may get drink and food vendors for future events. Also, please do your part to keep these events family-friendly, clean and safe so we can all enjoy the love we share for cars.

Tamara Jenkins wrote and directed this comedy-drama depicting the experience of growing up poor in the 90210 zip code, told from the point of view of Vivian Abramowitz (Natasha Lyonne), a teen who lives a nomadic existence in the outskirts of Beverly Hills with her single, divorced father, Murray (Alan Arkin) and her two young brothers (David Krumholtz, Eli Marienthal). As Murray tries to keep the family in the Beverly Hills school district, the family moves into a one-bedroom apartment in a shabby complex. When sexually liberated Rita (Marisa Tomei), daughter of Murray’s brother Mickey (Carl Reiner), checks out of a drug rehab and moves into the apartment, she becomes a “role model” for the young Vivian.

Flathead Valley Exchange Club’s Field of Honor®
Glacier High School
375 Wolfpack Way, Kalispell, Montana
Creating an awe-inspiring panorama, United States flags will fly in a solemn formation at Glacier High School during May of 2022. This stirring display of 1000 flags will bring the community together in a patriotic tribute to honor our heroes. Each U.S. flag represents an individual and tells a story. Flags may be sponsored to honor Active-Duty Military, Fallen Servicemen and Women, and Veterans. This unique event is the perfect opportunity for all of us to remember and honor our many heroes.
The Stars & Stripes reminds us of who we are as a people. Americans meet the challenges of history and overcome hardships becoming stronger. That is just who we are. The United States flag represents our solidarity in creating a brighter tomorrow and uniting us all.
This moving display is a gift to the community made possible through donations, sponsorships and the efforts of many dedicated volunteers. You can show your support and gratitude by sponsoring a flag or making a donation.
This is an experience hard to describe, but never to be forgotten. We invite all to visit the Flathead Valley Exchange Club’s Field of Honor® patriotic display and walk with us among the posted flags. Additionally, the display will raise funds for Veteran Programs of Flathead Valley Exchange Club.
The display is open to all without charge. Don’t miss it!
