Weekend PICKS: Thursday, November 4th thru Sunday, November 7th

November has come, and we can feel the changing of the seasons in the air, and in all the happenings around Missoula and Western Montana. If you add a layer or two, it’s a super sweet time to be outdoors without the crowds. Heads up, it’s hunting season, so wear your hi-viz, and don’t forget to have your pups do the same.
What’s going on this weekend? Plenty!
First Friday brings a cornucopia of art show and gallery openings in Missoula and Kalispell.
No, it’s not too soon for that beginning of the the Holiday Craft Fairs season – Hamilton has a big one, and the others are gearing up for the early shoppers.
And there’s music at all the regular places around town, and up the Bitterroot and Flathead valleys – Thursday night is on fire! Friday and Saturday have a bunch of great local music shows and events happening to get you out and about as well.
Get out and enjoy our locally-owned bars & restaurants with Montana grown / made food and beverages. Sing your favorite karaoke song, or catch a live show. Enjoy safely and responsibly.
Daylight Saving Time ends this weekend! Be sure to “fall back”, change your clocks back one hour Saturday night / Sunday morning.
Please note that events are subject to cancellation or change at the last minute. Be sure to check the event links to confirm your plans.
“I don’t mind going back to daylight saving time. With inflation, the hour will be the only thing I’ve saved all year.”
– Victor Borge

Thursty Ear Live Music – Tom Catmull
Stave & Hoop
223 N. Higgins – Alley Entrance, Missoula, Montana
Tom Catmull is a word enthusiast, for lack of a better term. They are the larger part of what makes his world go round. He’s spent the last twenty five years in his adopted hometown of Missoula, MT presenting words in ways to make them as alluring as possible to people who crave such things (and “ambushing” those who do not!). The tricks useful to achieving this include infectious melodies, thoughtful arrangements, storytelling, some finger picking and a clean shirt. His last couple of decades have included seven full length albums, a stack of plastic framed “Best Musician” endorsements, a few television appearances (Montana PBS 11th and Grant), theaters performances (The Wilma, The Rex, The Roxy), countless honkytonks, about a hundred original songs and one national anthem performance (”um, …Go Maulers!”). There is some healthy confidence that his Americana show is worthy of your time. But don’t be fooled. The acoustic guitar and harmonica are just cheap ploys to get the words out in front of you. There are stories in there. $5 added to tabs after 7pm.

ABOUT YUNG GRAVY
Go ahead and call him “The People’s Champ…”The people quite literally demanded his rise by galvanizing his jump from underground stalwart into a mainstream force.23-year-old MC, Minnesotan disruptor, and MILF connoisseur Yung Gravy quietly emerged as a gold-certified phenomenon by way of hilarious ad-libs and airtight rhymes. Within a year, his 2018 Snow Cougar EP yielded a pair of gold-selling bangers — “Mr. Clean” and “1 Thot 2 Thot Red Thot Blue Thot” — jumping from early SoundCloud success to the hottest playlists on Spotify such as New Music Friday and Pop Rising, to name a few. In its wake, he sold out three tours in North America, two tours in Europe, and his run of Australia and New Zealand. This hot streak continued as his world tour, Experience The Sensation, Part 2,” also sold out.
It supports his main goal though — as always.
“At the end of the day, this is all meant to make people feel good,” he leaves off. “This is party music, and everyone’s invited.”

Light and Redemption – Works by Sharon Davidson
Zootown Arts Community Center
216 W. Main Street, Missoula, Montana
In the Blackfoot Communications Gallery through November
Sharon Davidson’s work involves intuitive abstract painting. She works from photos she takes, interpreting her experience with the image through colorful, energetic marks. Her subject matter encompasses ruins of dwelling places of historical significance, portraits of loved ones, and the flowers and water ditches in my neighborhood.
ABOUT LIGHT AND REDEMPTION
Eastern State Penitentiary is the oldest prison in America. The prisoners’ cells were designed to be solitary dwellings where a single skylight inspired communication with their hearts and minds. Reflecting on their acts that brought them to be in this place, it was hoped the inmates would regret their wrongdoing and be redeemed.
ABOUT SHARON DAVIDSON
I received my art degree from the University of Montana in the 80’s. I was fortunate to study with Rudy Autio, Lee Nye, and James Dew. I moved to Seattle after graduating and began a career in interior design. Returning to Missoula in 2001, I began painting in 2016 after a serious illness led me to art therapist, Kim Brown Campbell. With support from Kim and my spouse, poet Scott Davidson, I am endeavoring to pursue an active engagement with art.

FREE: Big Sky Film Series Presents Torn
Wilma Theater
131 Higgins Avenue, Missoula, Montana
More info: https://bit.ly/3AWJK8q
The Big Sky Film Series presents TORN from director Max Lowe and National Geographic Documentary Films. Widely hailed as the greatest mountaineer of his generation, Alex Lowe was a towering figure in the world of outdoor sports. But he loomed even larger for his oldest son, Max, who was only 11 in 1999 when Alex was buried by an avalanche along with cameraman David Bridges while attempting to ski the north face of Mount Shishapangma in the Tibetan Himalaya. Seventeen years after their deaths, Lowe’s and Bridges’ bodies were found by two climbers attempting the same route, and in the following months, Lowe’s family journeyed to the remote mountain to recover them. In the powerful and deeply moving new documentary TORN, director Max Lowe examines the long-buried feelings this unearthed for him and his family, including his mother, Jennifer; his younger brothers, Sam and Isaac; and his stepfather, Conrad Anker, Alex’s climbing partner and best friend. Join us for the Montana premiere of TORN followed by a Q&A with director Max Lowe and subjects from this remarkable film

216 W. Main Street, Missoula, Montana
FIRST FRIDAY – LATE SHOW!
$10 in advance or at the door
To purchase advance tickets visit: https://showroom.zootownarts.org/event/linus-selling-4-free/
Linus is a newly formed ‘zen punk’ band from Missoula, Montana. Bri Watkins shreds the bass for this project, and has been in a variety of rock projects adding her own unique twist to sound experiments. Carson rips on the drums and has basically been hiding under some rock his entire life honing his craft. Kelsey Star has composed Linus’ collection of original material and sings lead vocals (+ rhythm guitar). She grew up in Montana listening to the full range of music – from Nirvana to Grimes and Beethoven. Kelsey seeks to bring an innovative sound to Missoula’s music scene while showing that women can rock and shred with the guys. Linus mission is to bring a unique brand of rock music to the world that advocates social justice by exploring concepts such as societal marginalization and stigmatization.
Selling for Free is the project of singer-songwriter and analogue enthusiast Rob Hylbom. His creative imagination draws from groups such as The Mountain Goats, Frank the Rabbit, and Bob Dylan. Hylbom’s songs explore music and culture, admiring and appreciating their histories. His sound is emotive, soft but firm. Recorded in bursts and fits, Selling for Free is a raw catalogue of the times.

Trans Future + Arrowleaf
Zootown Arts Community Center
216 W Main Street, Missoula, Montana
$10 in advance or at the door
To purchase advance tickets visit: https://showroom.zootownarts.org/…/trans-future-arrowleaf/
Self-described as New Wave Soul and Roll, Trans Future’s sound reflects the eclectic influences that warrant the inventive term, but a closer listen reveals their music is as much about what’s not there as what is. Each musician’s part is salient and distinct, but leaves space for the musical conversation to unfold. While space can be what makes things fall apart, the space TF creates is the architectural element that holds their music so tightly together. Space seems to come naturally to a band who formed in early 2020, masked and distanced, in the height of the pandemic. Trans Future recently signed to CorpoRAT Records, and are working on their debut full length album!
Arrowleaf pairs cinematic guitar tones with conservative drum work and addictive vocal hooks to deliver indie rock that’s “elegantly cosmic and easy to get along with” (Divide & Conquer Music). Featuring the introspective songwriting of Sarah Marker, the band is filled out by the thoughtful work of Brady Schwertfeger, Jim Frazer Riach, Amanda Ceaser, and Jon Filkins.
Masks are required for attendees for all Show Room events at this time. Masks may be removed for beverage consumption, but we ask that they please be worn at any time when not actively drinking.
