Weekend PICKS: Thursday, October 13th thru Sunday, October 16th

We’re rolling in to the peak of fall – get out there, don’t miss it! The weather is cooperating spectacularly, make the most of it. Once again, The MUG has compiled the most comprehensive list of events in Missoula and around Western Montana, all right here for you to make your own Weekend PICKS.
The Jewel Basin Event Center in Polson is hosting a cool “Feed the Need” benefit concert Thursday night featuring the Flathead’s own Tommy Edwards, and Jack Rogan, who both were featured recently on Season 21 of “The Voice”. Proceeds will benefit the Flathead Food Bank, and the Samaritan House.
Your 5-and-Oh Montana Griz play the Idaho Vandals at 1:00 pm Saturday with a home game at Washington Grizzly Stadium. The game itself sold-out already, but there’ll be lots going on before and after surrounding the event. Go Griz! And, you can pre-game in style Friday night at the annual Montana Wine & Beer Festival at Dahlberg Arena inside the Adams Center – it’s a fundraiser for the Grizzlies Scholarship Association.
For a great kids-friendly Saturday afternoon, the Fall Family Fest at Fort Missoula Regional Park looks like a fun time. Another strong option with the kids will be the No Limits Monster Trucks & Thrill Show Spectacular at the Northwest Montana Fairgrounds in Kalispell.
The Montana Film Festival is happening all weekend at The Roxy. You can meet the producers and cast members of the films, and be among the first to see some great movies in an intimate setting.
Farmers Markets season is winding down in Western Montana. It’ll be the last summer markets for Ronan (Thursday) and Kalispell (Saturday). Visit them and the others still open – stock up on all the fantastic farm to your table produce while you can. For a complete list of our area markets, check out our comprehensive Western Montana Farmers Markets story on The MUG.
The annual Tweed Ride returns on Sunday, rolling out of Free Cycles at noon – hit the thrift stores, and get your old cruiser bike ready! Highlander Beer is having GOAT RACES – Whaaaat? And. We’ve been waiting a long time to be able to say music is back at The Top Hat – it’s true! Spafford plays there with Sicard Hollow opening Sunday night to re-establish the stalwart of Downtown Missoula music venues back on the scene.
Our local venues are firing on all cylinders with our favorite local musicians and bands who just happening to be playing for your enjoyment (and a few tips here & there wouldn’t hurt, either). We’re counting over 70 music shows of one kind or another in the area. We’ve got options!
No matter what direction you wanna get outta town, you can’t go wrong. Activities and events are happening not only around Missoula, but all the way up the Flathead and the Bitterroot valleys, east to Phillipsburg and Anaconda, and out west past Alberton.
Get out and enjoy our locally-owned bars & restaurants with Montana grown / made food and beverages. Support our local farmers and crafts people. Go for an autumn hike or a bike ride! Catch a classic movie screening or a stand-up comedy night. Stretch that big brain at one of the local trivia nights. Sing your favorite karaoke song, or catch a live music show. Halloween’s not here quite yet, but there are some great spooky experiences to be had. Enjoy safely and responsibly.
Please confirm event details at the source before you go. Last minute changes are common, especially due to weather. With each event listing, we try to include a web page or event link with more information you can check for changes.

I cannot endure to waste anything so precious as autumnal sunshine by staying in the house.

For a complete schedule, click here.
With a lineup of independent films from all over the world, the Montana Film Festival embraces the expansive possibilities of filmmaking. The festival highlights emergent independent talents and favorites from major international festivals, with special attention paid to Montana’s burgeoning film industry. Just as this festival honors the makers, it is also a perennial local favorite from our audiences, who consistently value Taking The Time To Watch Cinema.
The beloved Roxy Theater, located on “The Hip Strip” in downtown Missoula, Montana, is the host venue for MTFF. If you love film, you’ll fall in love with this charming art-house theater. Only more charming than the theater is the regular staff who truly make the difference in terms of the festival experience. Hosting four festivals each year, the ‘Roxys’ are experts at hosting visiting filmmakers.
Our regular event welcomes guest writers, directors, actors, and industry professionals to experience Montana hospitality over the four-day festival. With special events to introduce audiences to filmmakers, spark conversation and reveal the inner workings of filmmaking, MTFF’s retreat-like atmosphere adds to the filmmaker development opportunities through our presenting partner, the Montana Film Office.
MTFF single ticket pricing includes student and senior discounts. Ticket links can be found on the individual MTFF film pages, under The Roxy’s Coming Soon page, or at the Roxy Box Office an hour before showtimes.
An MTFF All-Access Pass grants you access to every screening with a special code to reserve your seat to all four days of film. Email [email protected] with any questions about this process.

Feed the Need Benefit Concert
The Jewel Basin Center
218 Sportsman Lane, Bigfork, Montana
Benefitting the Samaritan House and the Flathead Valley Food Bank
Feed the Need is a benefit concert focused solely on raising funds to offset the dramatic inflation in food costs. As food and housing costs soar in the Flathead, two of our area’s key non-profits, Flathead Food Bank and Samaritan House, must weather exceptional challenges this winter. It is estimated that food costs have increased as much as 40% just in the last year, bringing a significant challenge for both organizations, which are the first line of defense against hunger and homelessness in the Flathead Valley.
Let’s come together alongside our neighbors who are experiencing hunger, celebrate community, and spend a night together singing along with Tommy Edwards and Jack Rogan of The Voice.
Ticket prices will follow a “Pay what you can” format.
Tickets will only be sold at the door. Let’s Feed the Need!

Thursday, October 13
7:30 pm – 10:00 pm
Musical: ‘Cabaret’
UM School of Theatre and Dance
32 Campus Drive, Missoula, Montana
This timely musical with a book by Joe Masteroff (based on the play by John Van Druten and stories by Christopher Isherwood), music by John Kander, and lyrics by Fred Ebb, captures all of the decadence and denial of pre-War Berlin. Cliff Bradshaw is an American author with writer’s block who arrives looking for inspiration. There he finds the seedy Kit Kat Club, featuring English singer and performer Sally Bowles. With its compelling Master of Ceremonies, fabulous live music, and complicated romantic intrigue, Cabaret draws the audience into a glittering, dangerous world—and ultimately gives us a searing look at what happens when an apathetic society refuses to see the consequences of its own political extremism.
Audience Advisory: This production contains sexually explicit themes/content, violence, and depictions of anti-Semitism; viewer discretion is advised.
Patrons with a UM Griz Card (students/faculty/staff) or high-school ID can get two tickets for $5.50 each (plus GrizTix fees). This price is not available online; it is only available at the Adams Center Box Office during regular business hours or one hour before the show at the PARTV Box Office. Buy tickets online here.

Dracula
Stevensville Playhouse
319 Main St, Stevensville, Montana
There’s something frightening going on at Carfax Abbey. Could it possible involve that charming Transylvanian, Count Dracula? Surely not…he is, by all accounts, a most proper gentleman who would never, under any circumstances, be seducing women for their blood. Reportedly, Lucy Seward, daughter of famed Doctor Arthur Seward, is suffering from some sort of mysterious illness. Her father, though greatly perplexed, is inclined to dismiss Lucy’s illness as simple hysteria. His good friend, Abraham Van Helsing, thinks something far more sinister is at work. And what to make of the inmate Renfield’s obsession with eating flies?

Spafford are known for their astonishing improvisational ability and off-the-cuff extended jams, Spafford paints a picture in real-time each night with a musical palette known only to each other. It’s a private language comprised of both their talent as musicians as well as their formidable catalog of influences, spanning 90’s alt-rock radio hits to Steely Dan and The Crystal Method. Each Spafford show is a sonic pilgrimage, the journey of a team of musicians so in tune with each other that a single note communicates intent and purpose. Spafford is amongst the most creative and hard-traveling bands on the contemporary jam scene, performing countless sold-out headline dates along with high profile festival sets at Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival, Firefly Music Festival, and many others.
About Sicard Hollow
Sicard Hollow is a four-piece progressive bluegrass band who formed with a mutual passion for pushing the boundaries of genre. Heavily influenced by the Grateful Dead and New Grass Revival, these young pickers bring new energy to a timeless style with a combination of fearless improvisation and instrumental prowess.
The band formed through mutual connections within the Nashville music scene who all wanted to play something different. They were all simultaneously discovering bluegrass while existing in their other scenes. Once they got together, the rest was history.
Having toured extensively around the country since 2018, this group of players continues to grow their sound with every performance. With the release of their debut studio album, ‘Secret of the Breeze’ (2020), a live album called ‘Live at Brooklyn Bowl Nashville’ (2021), and their upcoming sophomore studio effort, there is no slowing down for Sicard Hollow.
