Weekend PICKS: Thursday, October 6th thru Sunday, October 9th

This is the sweet spot for crisp blue sky autumn weather, folks – let’s make the most of it! Once again, The MUG has compiled the most comprehensive list of events in Missoula and around Western Montana, all right here for you to make your own Weekend PICKS.
We’re stoked about the Bike Ball (benefitting MTB Missoula) returning to Free Cycles (Friday) – with bike jousting! We’ve been waiting for the annual Community Grape Harvest at Ten Spoon – that’s happening Saturday. Anaconda’s Oktoberfest is Saturday, and not to be outdone, Philipsburg Brewing’s Oktoberfest runs all weekend Friday thru Sunday.
Farmers Markets season is winding down in Western Montana. It’ll be the last summer market for Polson (Friday). Visit them and the others still open – stock up on all the fantastic farm to your table produce while you can. For a complete list of our area markets, check out our comprehensive Western Montana Farmers Markets story on The MUG.
Big-name shows happening are Rodney Carrington (Thursday) at the Dennison Theater; Paula Poundstone (Friday) at The Wilma; and Thomas Rhett (Saturday) at Adams Center.
Our local venues are firing on all cylinders with our favorite local musicians and bands who just happening to be playing for your enjoyment (and a few tips here & there wouldn’t hurt, either). We’re counting over 60 music shows of one kind or another in the area. We’ve got options!
No matter what direction you wanna get outta town, you can’t go wrong. Activities and events are happening not only around Missoula, but all the way up the Flathead and the Bitterroot valleys, east to Phillipsburg and Anaconda, and out west past Alberton.
Get out and enjoy our locally-owned bars & restaurants with Montana grown / made food and beverages. Support our local farmers and crafts people. Go for a hike or a bike ride! Catch a classic movie screening or a stand-up comedy night. Stretch that big brain at one of the local trivia nights. Sing your favorite karaoke song, or catch a live music show. Enjoy safely and responsibly.
Please confirm event details at the source before you go. Last minute changes are common, especially due to weather. With each event listing, we try to include a web page or event link with more information you can check for changes.

October is the month of
lost chances or lucky breaks.
The month of edgy time between seasons.
I still remember you. All the years
that have spun us forever deeper
into dizzy forgetting,
you still show up in October
like a wind, good for kites
and walks in the hills.
Leaning a bit into it,
into your uphill memory,
then walking steady and straight
on the easy way home;
and back to the comfort of books,
and the safety of candles
flickering near the darkening windows
keeping the reflections warm.

Longstaff House
601 Longstaff Street, Missoula, Montana
What began as an all-female festival collab quickly morphed into a serious passion project driven by sisterhood, harmony and humor……along with the shared desire to rage fiddle tunes and smash the patriarchy.
Big Richard is a neo-acoustic super group made up of four well established Colorado musicians: Bonnie Sims on mandolin (Bonnie & Taylor Sims/Everybody Loves An Outlaw/Bonnie & the Clydes), Joy Adams on cello (Nathaniel Rateliff/Darol Anger/Half Pelican), Emma Rose on bass + guitar (Sound of Honey/Daniel Rodriguez/Whippoorwill) and Eve Panning on fiddle (Lonesome Days).
Formed in late 2021, the band gained immediate notoriety for their charismatic stage presence and their vocal/instrumental prowess. After selling out all of their club shows Big Richard quickly started confirming festival appearances across America.

Gallery Opening: ‘Zigzagging All Over the Place’ – Works by Ziggy Stillman
Zootown Arts Community Center
216 W Main St, Missoula, Montana
Gallery Opening on First Friday, October 7, 5-8 PM
In the Youth Gallery through the end of October
Ziggy Stillman is a prolific 7-year-old multimedia artist and a frequent ZACC camper.
In Ziggy’s words:
“I love making art. I create lots of different kinds of art, like sculpture, painting, and paper mache. I use primary colors and also make my own colors. When I’m working on an art piece, I get lost in it and just can’t stop. It’s as if time doesn’t exist. I make realistic and abstract art. When I make realistic art, I listen to the world around me to get ideas. I hear something that someone says or see something that someone does, and then I want to create it in my own way. When I make abstract work, my hands just take over my whole body and I just start creating. I don’t really have a set goal, I just love the act of making art until it feels complete.”

8th Annual Missoula Monster Project
Zootown Arts Community Center
216 W Main St, Missoula, Montana
For more information visit: https://www.zootownarts.org/…/missoula-monster-project…
Every school year, the Zootown Arts Community Center works in collaboration with the MCPS Fine Arts Department to produce the Missoula Monster Project, one of our most beloved annual events. Originally conceived by nine year-old Asa Smetanka, the Missoula Monster Project is always a collaboration between school children and adult artists. Kindergartners draw a monster from their incredible imaginations, and adult artists recreate these monsters in their own medium. This year kindergarten classes from Chief Charlo, Lowell, and Franklin schools have created original monster drawings for artists to reimagine.
The ZACC bar will be open and folks will be able to purchase beverages for their enjoyment during the event. Monsters will be available for purchase on a first-come, first-served basis – so arrive early to snag your favorite! The 8th Annual Missoula Monster Project will remain on display in our Main Gallery through the month of October, so feel free to stop by and see the show after the opening if you prefer a more private experience.
For those who are far away and can’t come to the ZACC for our in-person opening, don’t fret – the 8th Annual Missoula Monster Project will also be shoppable online! All youth and adult monsters will be viewable through a link on our website following the in-person opening. Some of the monsters will have been purchased by the time our online monster shop is live (as parents of youth artists always have first dibs), but many will still be available. We have a goal this year to FIND A HOME FOR EVERY MONSTER, so feel free to share the virtual gallery far and wide!
Check back the week of October 9 through October 15 for a link to the 2022 Missoula Monster Project Virtual Gallery. Monsters will be available to take home beginning November 1.

Fubuki Daiko
Westside Theater
1200 Shakespeare St Ste. #2, Missoula, Montana
Fubuki Daiko reinvents traditional Japanese drumming with their eclectic and energetic performances that are part martial arts athleticism, part meditation, and all rhythm. For over twenty years, they have performed at festivals, concert halls, and schools across North America. Collaborations with a wide range of groups including the Winnipeg Singers, Moses Mayes Family Funk Band, the Northern Plains Ballet, and Ron Paley’s Big Band, have continued to fuel their pursuit of excellence and innovation in this ancient art form.
The core members of the group each have over 25 years of taiko experience and received their formative training from the founder of North American Taiko, Grandmaster Seiichi Tanaka. After performing at Carnegie Hall with the San Francisco Taiko Dojo and leaving with Tanaka’s blessing, they relocated to Winnipeg, Manitoba where they expanded into the current professional touring ensemble. The group’s self-titled CD received a Prairie Music Award for Outstanding Instrumental Recording.

Aaron Woodall Live in Missoula

Bone Dry Comedy Presents: Aaron Woodall Live in Missoula
We are excited to present Aaron Woodall Live in Missoula, Montana! Just under a year ago we saw him perform live for the first time and had to bring him to the rest of Montana. Aaron Woodall is a comedian you don’t want to miss.
From the once-popular podcast The Mormon and The Methhead, Aaron Woodall is a charming and affable has-been. Named one of Conan O’Brien’s Comics To Watch at the New York City Comedy Festival in 2018, he’s done absolutely nothing of note since. Once an exciting young comic with potential, he is now a withered and broken man just one pandemic later. His aptly-named 2020 album WOODALLALONE debuted at #1 on Aaron’s Venmo Feed, and is available now on Bandcamp. More of his jokes and yet-unfulfilled promise can be seen on Amazon Prime, Dry Bar Comedy, and the Boise Army Navy Store’s website (this is true, apparently).

Sunday, October 9
8:00 am – 5:00 pm
Pattee Canyon Hill Climb
204 Takima Drive, Missoula, Montana
No amount of colds, COVIDs, youth soccer matches, strife, or alcoholism can stop this year’s hill climb from happening. Let’s f’n goooo!!!
Take pics and use the #R1K hashtag in your Instagram or post in the FB event discussion for chances at killer prizes that are 100% real. Think panache, speed, slow, style, beers consumed, hardboiled eggs eaten, worst bike, lantern rouge, whatever the eff I feel like giving prizes for.
JOIN THE STRAVA CLUB, AS THAT IS THE ONLY WE CAN KEEP TRACK OF TIMES (LINK BELOW).
Have fun and remember to veer left at the top of the climb!!!
Below are the basics:
We will use Strava to collect times over a nine hour period and TRUST YOU to follow The Rulez:
1. The Route: https://www.strava.com/segments/8291691. This link is the race course, but we ask that you start from Takima Drive with your front wheel beside the sewer grate near the stop sign, then take a right onto Pattee. This is a small safety thing. Start your ride when there is no uphill traffic, please.
2. No rolling starts. Clip in at the aforementioned spot on Takima and give ‘er heck.
3. No drafting. If we find out about you drafting, it will be hella embarrassing for you and your family, trust me. If you do decide to ride the course with a crew (yes!), please space yourselves about one minute apart.
4. You get one chance. No multiple runs. If you end up riding up again for some reason, we will use your first run time, or just take the right into the parking lot so Strava won’t record the Pattee Canyon Hill Climb (PCHC) course segment.
5. Join the Strava club as this is how we will keep track of you and know that you are taking part in the Pattee Creek Hill Climb (PCHC): https://www.strava.com/clubs/552437
Be careful, be smart, and blow your f’n lungs out! It’s gonna be a beauty.
