Weekend PICKS: Thursday, September 16th thru Sunday, September 19th

It’s the last weekend of summer! With only a handful of days remaining until autumn begins, here’s your best bets to squeeze that last drops off summer goodness from all the things happening this weekend in & around Missoula and western Montana. Most of the remaining farmers markets will be wrapping up their seasons at the end of the month.
Just a few highlights include Roller Prom! Friday night at the Southgate Mall parking lot, the Tailgate (Softball) Tournament at Fort Missoula Park, the kickoff off Missoula Cyclocross season, SponCon at Home ReSource, Ronan’s annual Harvest Festival, the return of UM’s Missoula Symphony Orchestra at Dennison Hall, the premiere of the “Miss Montana: Return to the Big Skies” documentary at Big Sky Brewing, the Whitefish Songwriters’ Festival all weekend, and Billy Strings’ sold-out show at The Wilma.
The MUG is here with all the happenings this weekend around Missoula, and up the Bitterroot and Flathead valleys. There’s live local music all over the place. Get out and enjoy our area farmers markets, bars & restaurants with Montana grown / made food and beverages. Enjoy safely and responsibly.
Please note that events are subject to cancellation or change at the last minute. Be sure to check the event links to confirm your plans.
“It is the glistening autumnal side of summer. I feel a cool vein in the breeze, which braces my thought, and I pass with pleasure over sheltered and sunny portions of the sand where the summer’s heat is undiminished, and I realize what a friend I am losing.”
Henry David Thoreau

Music in the Sound Garden – Jesse, The Ocelot + Kurt Juergens (The Broadest Blue)
The Roxy Theater
718 S Higgins Avenue, Missoula, Montana
Jesse, The Ocelot
Jesse, The Ocelot was born from the mountains, and learned at a young age his song from the songbirds. He’s traveled the cosmos in search of the secret and wants to share the beauty with anyone who will take the time. Taking influences from Thom Yorke, Leslie Feist, Robin Pecknold, and Jeff Buckley. Lush, atmosphere harmonies and intense lyrics make up most of his sound. Blending color and emotion, Jesse will take you on a journey you didn’t know you needed to take.
Kurt Juergens (The Broadest Blue)
Exposing all the joys and pains of human experience through historical events, Kurt Juergens—under the alias The Broadest Blue—alternates between (and combines) genres more smoothly than some bands alternate between tempos. Folk, jazz, classical, chamber pop—as quickly as they have appeared in The Broadest Blue’s music—are to be heard there, fusing into a new musical backdrop for grand storytelling.
Maximizing a time of “gainful underemployment” in California, Juergens spent the year 2013 writing a song every week to develop his craft. As the project was wrapping up, an infatuation with the redacted history of the JFK assassination began, creating a years-long, all-consuming project that called for exhaustive research and daring musical growth. The result is his debut LP: Kennedy.
The Broadest Blue can frequently be heard around New York City performing the songs from Kennedy with Brooklyn’s largest regularly-performing indie/folk/jazz/chamber pop band. As in most artists’ initial release, Kennedy reveals Juergens’ biggest influences (Brian Wilson, Sufjan Stevens, et al.)—but with lyrics, harmonic ideas, and track sequencing occasionally more cinematic, and consistently more pointed.
Amidst a slow collapse of truth and meaning in which distracted masses are comforted into perpetual ignorance, The Broadest Blue re-engages the senses and shines the light of the truth. Fear the typewriter’s hammer’s thud: The Broadest Blue is here to wage war.

216 W Main St, Missoula, Montana
$10 in advance or at the door
To purchase tickets visit: https://www.zootownarts.org/…/spirit-hotel…/347974
Ash Nataanii and Spirit Hotel will bring their color struck gothic dream-pop to the séance Friday night. Panther Car will be rolling up to the front with tried and true-blue angular Pythagorean psychedelia. The night is sure to guarantee that, for better and worse, you’ll feel as good as possible this side of reality… or your ego back, free of charge.
Panther Car comes in the shape of a traditional rock band yet sounds far from it. Their amorphous brand of pop music teeters between the radiant iridescence of psychedelia and the murky darkness of dreams. Every moment is a door that opens into a new room. Songs progress through tangential wormholes as in an ecstatic conversation; music that is equal parts meditation and celebration. Hard to categorize, maybe Panther Car is better defined by negation. Panther Car is not something you want to miss.
Masks are encouraged at all Show Room events at this time.

The wild world of adolescence has rarely been captured with as sharp an observational eye as in this refreshingly smart, frank spin on the teen comedy by director Amy Heckerling and screenwriter Cameron Crowe—for each of whom it kicked off a hugely successful film career. Based on Crowe’s experiences going undercover as a student at a Southern California high school, Fast Times at Ridgemont High blends hormone-fueled hilarity with an almost sociological examination of the 1980s teenage experience: the shopping mall hangouts, fast-food jobs, buzzkill teachers, awkward dates, and first experiences of love and sex. This pop-culture touchstone launched to stardom practically an entire cast of unknowns—including Jennifer Jason Leigh, Phoebe Cates, Judge Reinhold, Forest Whitaker, Anthony Edwards, Eric Stoltz, and Sean Penn as stoner icon Jeff Spicoli—and broke new ground in its raw yet sensitive depiction of the realities of coming of age.

SOLD OUT:Billy Strings

ABOUT BILLY STRINGS
Acclaimed singer, songwriter and musician Billy Strings won Best Bluegrass Album at the 63rd Annual GRAMMY Awards for his critically acclaimed record, HOME. Released on Rounder Records, HOME was produced by Glenn Brown and furthers Strings’ reputation as “one of string music’s most dynamic young stars” (Rolling Stone). Of the album, Associated Press proclaims, “it is his creative musical storytelling, paired with solid vocals on Home that should seal the deal, pleasing fans of the genre and creating some new ones…the perfect blend of pure talent and pluck,” while The Wall Street Journal declares, “Billy Strings has clearly emerged as a premier guitar flatpicker of this era.” Moreover, Strings and the album topped Billboard’s 2020 year-end chart in both Bluegrass categories: Top Bluegrass Artists and Top Bluegrass Albums Titles.
Michigan-born and now Nashville-based, Strings arrived on the music scene as one of the most compelling new artists with the release of his 2017 debut LP, Turmoil & Tinfoil. Since his debut, Strings has been awarded Guitar Player of the Year and New Artist of the Year at the 2019 International Bluegrass Music Awards, selected as one of Rolling Stone’s 2017 “New Country Artists to Know” and performed on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” and PBS’ “Bluegrass Underground.” Often playing over 200 shows per year, he has also become known as an electric live performer, keeping the improvisational tradition of bluegrass alive while incorporating elements of several diverse genres. WXPN’s World Café declares, “a bona fide phenom…with his virtuosic guitar playing front and center, Strings fuses bluegrass to psych rock, country and jam music, without fussing over what bluegrass should be.”
