Weekend PICKS: Thursday, September 22nd thru Sunday, September 25th
Helloooooo Autumn! And just like that, it’s time to bust out the long pants and sweaters. For the beginning of the fall season, The MUG has compiled the most comprehensive list of events in Missoula and around Western Montana, all right here for you to make your own Weekend PICKS.
UM Griz Football vs. Portland Vikings / Homecoming Weekend – game time 2:00 pm Saturday. The Fall Harvest Festival is happening all day Sunday at Fort Missoula. And – is it a trend? – several exceptional metal shows around the area through the weekend. If you’re into that sort of thing – and who’s not?
Farmers Markets season is beginning to wind down in Western Montana. Last market weekends for
Huckleberries, strawberries and the full late-summer bounty is here, and for a complete list of nearly three dozen in the area, check out our comprehensive Western Montana Farmers Markets story on The MUG.
We’re counting around 80 music shows of one kind or another in the area. We’ve got options!
No matter what direction you wanna get outta town, you can’t go wrong. Activities and events are happening not only around Missoula, but all the way up the Flathead and the Bitterroot valleys, east to Phillipsburg and Anaconda, and out west past Alberton.
Get out and enjoy our locally-owned bars & restaurants with Montana grown / made food and beverages. Support our local farmers and crafts people. Go for a hike or a bike ride! Catch a classic movie screening or a stand-up comedy night. Stretch that big brain at one of the local trivia nights. Sing your favorite karaoke song, or catch a live music show. Enjoy safely and responsibly.
Please confirm event details at the source before you go. Last minute changes are common, especially due to weather. With each event listing, we try to include a web page or event link with more information you can check for changes.
Do you have a Western Montana event you would like to have included on The MUG? Click HERE to submit your event!

Kristi Hager’s Opening Art Exhibit “Love Letters to Missoula”
Radius Gallery
120 North Higgins Avenue
Missoula, Montana
Radius Gallery is proud to feature over 20 intimate paintings by long-time Missoula artist Kristi Hager, work she calls “pieces of my heart.” These love letters to Missoula dwell on the daily rhythms and sights from the artist’s life—walks along Rattlesnake Creek, laps at the public pool, summer floaters on the Clark Fork, and a grocery store parking lot at sunset – portraits of her hometown that capture a moment while also exploring new techniques.
Well known for her large-scale works, Hager has now turned to a more intimate format focusing on views of Mount Jumbo, Rattlesnake Creek, and the Hellgate Canyon through the seasons, as well as floaters, surfers, swimmers, and sunsets. “I’ve gone through periods where I wanted to use my art to make statements. That can be very powerful,” Hager says. “But now I want to paint simple things in my life. And I want to explore the technical challenges of showing the simplest things, like a fallen log.”

“In one performance, California-born, New York-based vocalist Shayna Steele unleashed enough voltage to light up the West End.” — London Jazz News
One of the greatest singing sensations of our time, known from recordings with Snarky Puppy and Moby and a host of other stars, Shayna Steele takes flight on her third album, “Watch Me Fly”. Offering six self-penned originals and four select classics ranging from Soul via Blues and Gospel and easily crossing over to retro R&B and Jazz, showcasing Shayna Steele’s supremely soulful energy, as well as her mind blowing vocal artistry and songwriting skills.
Maria Zepeda lives to express through creation. Whether that is through song, advocacy, community, or connection, she expresses with a loving passion that encourages others to find their loving passion too. Her larger than life presence invites you to take a closer look at the ways we can live in love for ourselves, each other, and our planet. Maria’s sound has been compared to the likes of Janis Joplin, Stevie Nicks, Halsey, Jewel and Brandi Carlile. Rich, powerful, smokey, and full of soulful emotion come through her curious being. Her lyrics come through her lived experience and at times, through the channeling of spirit singing through her. She sings because it connects her to the truth of her soul. She sings because singing lets her know she is alive. She sings in hopes that you will let it move you into your own beautiful becoming.

It’s time to flaunt your flannel! Here’s what you need to know about our fall equinox shin-dig:
3:00 pm to 5:00 pm: We’ll have a cider press on hand. So bring your apples, pears and other fruity things we can smash in the press. Don’t forget to bring your CLEAN jugs from home with lids, too.
4:30 pm: We’re gonna have a pie-eating contest — except with donuts! Even better, that amazing place by Woodland Park, THE SPOT, is sponsoring our donut-eating contest and they make some mighty good power rings! No sign up for the contest. Just show up and we’ll see who makes the cut. Thanks so much to Mitch at The Spot. Go check that place out if you haven’t already. It’s heaven!
5:30 pm: The Teccas take the stage with live music and rock the house until 8:30 pm. Pretty sure their eyesight will be messed up with all the plaided-out folks in the audience.
Show up decked out in plaid and flannel and all things fall and we’ll buy you a half-pint!

Tom Catmull
Draught Works
915 Toole Ave, Missoula, Montana
Tom Catmull is a songwriter from Gulf Coast Texas who landed in Western Montana in 1994. His earliest songs had the definite stamp of any number of three named performers from his home state (Jerry Jeff Walker, Robert Earl Keen, Willis Allen Ramsey,…you get the idea.). After seven full length recordings, several band combinations, thousands of performances and the acquisition of one corduroy jacket, he now finds himself playing some of the best shows of his career. Depending on the night and the room, you’ll hear some combination of country, folk, pop, shuffles, waltzes, rock and some songs designed specifically to ear worm ya. Listen when you can. Then say hello.

Hemlock Blue + Larysa Blavatsky + Tuskerz
Zootown Arts Community Center
216 W Main St, Missoula, Montana
$10 To purchase tickets visit: https://showroom.zootownarts.org/…/hemlock-blue-larysa…/
Hemlock Blue is an indie-rock band based in Missoula, MT. With music inspired by the sound and tradition of singer-songwriters, Hemlock Blue is excited to be premiering its batch of original songs. The songs, written by guitarist Matthew Knight, were composed with the sole pursuit of writing the ‘perfect song’. While they never quite achieved that, what resulted is a lineup that Hemlock Blue is thrilled to be debuting as an ensemble. Hemlock Blue is guitarist and vocalist Matthew Knight, drummer Willie Baltz, bassist Connor Racicot, saxophonist Cade Chastain, and cellist Kat Burgstahler.
Tuskerz is a funhouse mirror, it’s a wet kiss, a dreamsicle with spikes, a Big Gulp filled to the brim with lava. Tuskers are a three-piece from Missoula with nothing to lose.
Larysa Blavatsky is a multi-talented musician with a folk-pop sensibility. She’s a violinist, pianist, guitarist, organist, and vocalist who was raised in Butte, where she began her musical journey. She’s now in her last year studying music education and violin performance at the UM School of Music.
