Weekend PICKS: Thursday, September 23rd thru Sunday, September 26th

Well, hello fall! What about that solstice moon we just had, and spectacular weather looking spectacular all the way through the upcoming weekend – we’ll take it.
There are only a couple weekends left for many of the surrounding area’s farmers markets – pick up the fall bounty while you can. With the leaves beginning to turn colors, we’re entering the sweet spot for getting out on the trails – Saturday is National Public Lands Day; if you’re not hiking or mountain biking or hunting or fishing or volunteering this weekend, you ain’t Montanan.
Logjam is kicking off fall with a couple big shows – Lake Street Dive at the Kettlehouse Ampitheater on Thursday (with Shakewell opening), and the amazing Pink Floyd tribute band Pinky and The Floyd will get you comfortably numb Friday at The Wilma. The annual Oktoberfest festival is happening daily through Saturday in Whitefish.
The MUG is here with all the happenings this weekend around Missoula, and up the Bitterroot and Flathead valleys. There’s live local music all over the place – some 55 local music shows if you know where to look (right here!) Get out and enjoy our area farmers markets, bars & restaurants with Montana grown / made food and beverages. Sing a karaoke song, or catch a comedy show. Enjoy safely and responsibly.
Please note that events are subject to cancellation or change at the last minute. Be sure to check the event links to confirm your plans.

Big Sky Film Series presents BECOMING COUSTEAU
Zootown Arts Community Center
216 W. Main St., Missoula, Montana
Adventurer, filmmaker, inventor, author, unlikely celebrity and conservationist: For over four decades, Jacques-Yves Cousteau and his explorations under the ocean became synonymous with a love of science and the natural world. As he learned to protect the environment, he brought the whole world with him, sounding alarms more than 50 years ago about the warming seas and our planet’s vulnerability. In BECOMING COUSTEAU, from National Geographic Documentary Films, two-time Academy Award®-nominated filmmaker LIZ GARBUS takes an inside look at Cousteau and his life, his iconic films and inventions, and the experiences that made him the 20th century’s most unique and renowned environmental voice — and the man who inspired generations to protect the Earth.

National Public Lands Day 2021
House of Sky Trail, Mount Dean Stone (view map)
What better way to celebrate our public lands than building new trails? Register today for this Saturday’s trail workday and celebration. Hosted by Five Valleys, MTB Missoula, Montana Trail Crew, the City of Missoula, and Montana Conservation Corps, we will be working to build the new 4.6-mile House of Sky Trail in honor of National Public Lands Day.
We will be digging trail, raking gravel, and completing other necessary trail work. Volunteers have the option of registering for a shuttle that departs from the Lewis and Clark Park and Ride at 8:30am or driving themselves. All volunteers will then hike to the worksite.
Afterwards we will celebrate with treats from Mary’s Mountain Cookies and beverages from Big Sky Brewing Company. We will also be raffling off two Flexlite camp chairs from REI Co-op and one entry into the Mount Jumbo Elk Ramble 15k trail race. Thank you to these generous business partners for supporting National Public Lands Day!
Given the recent rise in COVID cases, we are being abundantly cautious. Volunteers should bring a face mask and their own lunch and expect to work socially distanced.

About the film; TGR’s 26th annual film release “Stoke The Fire” explores our athlete’s evolution within skiing and the pure joy that stems from that process. Stoke manifests itself in different ways – for many it comes from committing to a new world, a lifestyle, and the friendships that blossom from that commitment. The choice to enter this world is a spark, and with every new experience the fire grows. With more knowledge comes more exploration, both physically and mentally, that helps us to reignite and keep that stoke burning; to drive us to push further and further into our exploration with nature and the limits of our own abilities. While the answers we find are different for everyone, the pursuit of this evolution is something sacred, the pursuit is what stokes the fire.

As to the music, I’ll be concocting some tasty original instrumentals, some created “on the spur of the moment,” plus will deliver plenty of favorite tunes spanning five decades and a half dozen genres. Guitars, vocals, guitar looper plus vocal harmonizer, great brews, a fine venue and you! I hope you will join me for my final Missoula appearance of 2021″. Cheers, EDJ.
