Weekend PICKS: Thursday, September 29th thru Sunday, October 2

Wait, October already? Okay, let’s do it! For the kickoff of the harvest month, The MUG has compiled the most comprehensive list of events in Missoula and around Western Montana, all right here for you to make your own Weekend PICKS.
The weekend weather looks suitably crisp and a little rainy – perfect, if you ask us! Some of our favorite fall festivals are going on: The Great Northwest Oktoberfest is happening in Whitefish from Thursday thru Sunday. Saturday is the big annual MacIntosh Apple Day (and Liquid Apple Night) in Hamilton, Pumpkin Festival at Turner Farms in Missoula, Cider Harvest Party at Western Cider, and the Montana Brewers Fall Rendezvous at Caras Park. The wildly popular Field of Screams, Montana’s #1 Haunted Attraction opens this weekend in Victor – if you wanna have fun getting scared right out of your chonies, that’s the place.
Farmers Markets season is winding down in Western Montana. It’ll be the last (Thursday) summer markets for Orchard Homes, Ronan, Alberton and Columbia Falls, (Friday) Lolo and (Saturday) Stevensville. Visit them and the others still open – stock up on all the fantastic farm to your table produce while you can. For a complete list of our area markets, check out our comprehensive Western Montana Farmers Markets story on The MUG.
Big-name music shows happening are Ashley McBride (Friday) at The Wilma; Reverend Horton Heat (Saturday) at The Remington Bar in Whitefish; Todd Snider with Nicki Bluhm (Saturday) at The Wilma.
And it seems like all our favorite local musicians and bands just happening to be playing at all our local venues. We’re counting over 80 music shows of one kind or another in the area. We’ve got options!
No matter what direction you wanna get outta town, you can’t go wrong. Activities and events are happening not only around Missoula, but all the way up the Flathead and the Bitterroot valleys, east to Phillipsburg and Anaconda, and out west past Alberton.
Get out and enjoy our locally-owned bars & restaurants with Montana grown / made food and beverages. Support our local farmers and crafts people. Go for a hike or a bike ride! Catch a classic movie screening or a stand-up comedy night. Stretch that big brain at one of the local trivia nights. Sing your favorite karaoke song, or catch a live music show. Enjoy safely and responsibly.
Please confirm event details at the source before you go. Last minute changes are common, especially due to weather. With each event listing, we try to include a web page or event link with more information you can check for changes.

“In the entire circle of the year there are no days so delightful as those of a fine October, when the trees are bare to the mild heavens, and the red leaves bestrew the road, and you can feel the breath of winter, morning and evening—no days so calm, so tenderly solemn, and with such a reverent meekness in the air.”
– Alexander Smith

$10 // $15 Tour Supporter Ticket https://showroom.zootownarts.org/…/illuminati-congo-w…/
Illuminati Congo is a conscious and forward thinking lyricist from Chicago, Illinois. In a time where so much is uncertain and in question, he brings some much needed positive vibrations. When their plan is division, we counter them with unity, oneness, and breath. And that is exactly our intention with hosting this gathering. Having a place where we can all commune and come together as a community. Congo is rooted in hip hop and roots reggae with the teachings of His Imperial Majesty, Haile Selassaie, laying the foundation. Our good Brother Ras Jahshua from Yuma, Arizona will be opening on the 1’s and 2’s with some roots reggae in dub, and will be Congo’s DJ for the evening. A long time Brother and wicked musician for the past 20 years, Ras Jahshua plays multiple instruments and produces many of the local artists in his hometown of Yuma, Arizona.
*Please note that you may use cannabis outside the venue, as it is legal for those over 21 to use recreationally in Montana, but you may not smoke any substances inside the venue – including cannabis.

Ashley McBryde
The Wilma Theater
131 Higgins Avenue, Missoula, Montana
$25 – $30 Advance Tickets
Ashley McBryde cut her teeth playing country songs in rural biker bars – and it shows. Her 2018 major label debut Girl Going Nowhere (Warner Music Nashville) charmed the New York Times, NPR, Rolling Stone, Paste, The Washington Post, and more, all en route to landing a GRAMMY nomination for Best Country Album. McBryde closed out 2019 with ACM New Female Artist, CMT Breakout Artist of the Year, a New Artist of the Year win at the 53rd Annual CMA Awards, and two nominations for the 2020 GRAMMYs for Best Country Song and Best Country Solo Performance for “Girl Goin’ Nowhere.” Her follow-up Never Will, released April 3, was tagged by Rolling Stone as one of the most anticipated of the year alongside NPR, who also ranked her lead Top 10 RIAA Gold-Certified single “One Night Standards” as one of the best songs of 2019. Produced once again by Jay Joyce, Never Will reveals the witty, confessional, detail-driven songwriting addressing a wide spectrum of blue-collar Southern women’s experience introduced on Girl Going Nowhere is still here, but perhaps even sharper, earning McBryde a 2021 GRAMMY nomination for Best Country Album, along with 2021 ACM nominations for Album of the Year, Female Artist of the Year and Song of the Year for lead single “One Night Standards.” The music itself is stadium-ready rock-and-roll with a bluegrass wink or two and country music’s storytelling heart––and McBryde, no longer new, is the music’s ordained and highly capable standard-bearer.
