A Harvest of Memories

The wind is changing directions. It has been a good summer and one I will remember. But the shadows are coming. The cool mornings and soft breeze through the air wakes me in the morning. My long pants have returned. As I get older, I can see the shadows under my eyes. I watch them as my children grow and leave home to follow their dreams. I watch them like they are part of a harvest. Shadows are key to my paintings – light vs dark, an eclipsing of one object over another. We lost a son, an unexpected death two years ago. The shadows of that summer rest in my heart today. His life, too short. Lately, I have been seeing his spirit in dragonflies that linger on grape vines and dance in the sun. The ease with which watercolor allows that movement lets me carry those shadows into light but also reminds me that in this season some shadows are out of our control.
