Adventure Audio Podcast with Tyler Hamilton
Mike Cohen – Long Distance Cyclist, Cancer Survivor and Heart Transplant Recipient
At age 18, Mike Cohen was diagnosed with an aggressive form of Leukaemia. A few years later, Mike won his battle with cancer, however as a result of all the radiation and chemotherapy treatments, his heart was damaged. In his early 30’s he suffered from a heart attack. Mike needed a heart transplant. On February 21, 2018, 32 year old James Mazzuchelli, a Navy flight surgeon, was killed in a helicopter training accident. Because of James’s selfless decision to donate his organs, he saved Mike’s life. The very next year, Mike cycled 1426 miles from San Diego, California to Jackson, Florida to meet James’s family. This is an absolutely amazing story, and we’re so grateful to Mike for sharing it with us.

Peter Stetina is an American off-road cyclist, who competes in gravel and endurance mountain bike racing as a privateer. Prior to his, he competed on the road in the world tour, between 2010 and 2019 for the Garmin-Sharp, BMC and Trek-Segafredo teams. We chat with Pete about his career and transition to off road racing, his cycling family, FKT’s, privateering and much more.

Patrick Farnsworth is the host of the Bikes or Death Podcast. Patrick has been an avid cyclist and outdoorsman since his days in the Boy Scouts, and Bikes or Death is simply an extension of his love for cycling and the great outdoors. We welcome Jim Capra, head coach at Tyler Hamilton Training, back to the show. We discuss ‘off season’ training plans and strategies to stay fit while also giving your body some time to recover. Tyler and Pete are slowly coming around to the idea of virtual cycling, and the social aspect of connecting with friends in other parts of the world and we also get into the importance of goal setting. Lastly, Peter throws out a challenge to Jim and Tyler; the CrossFit workout known as ‘The Murph’. We want to extend that challenge to our listeners as well! On December 2nd, we’ll be taking on The Murph, which is a 1 mile run, 100 pull-ups, 200 push-ups, 300 squats followed by another 1 mile run…all in under 1 hour (details in the episode).

Interview with Dagny Deutchman and ‘Gettin’ in the Groove’ Story
Dagny is a 2nd-year graduate student at Montana State University where she is the current coordinator for the Sleep and Development Lab. Dagny grew up in the small town of Salmon, Idaho where she has been a whitewater river guide for the past 12 years. Dagny guides on the Middlefork of the Salmon, which is Shoshone-Bannock tribal land. It is her favorite place in the entire world.
If you can’t find her on the Middlefork of the Salmon, expect to find her with her nose in a book, community building, or project managing somewhere. Dagny’s current research focus looks at the intersection of sleep and positive psychology constructs such as mindfulness and self-compassion. When Dagny isn’t working, you can be sure to find her with a paintbrush, on a dancefloor, or cooking good food for good friends.
In 2019, Dagney organized the Stories of Salmon and Steelhead project for the Idaho Conservation League. (Stories of Salmon and Steelhead LINK)
Dagny’s story was recorded in front of a live audience on March 29th, 2016, at The Wilma in Missoula, MT. The theme that evening was“Why Didn’t Anyone Tell Me?”. Dagny calls her story “Gettin’ In The Groove”.
Dagney, guiding a river trip on the Salmon River, tries her best to be empathetic to Ken, a client who is having difficulty adapting to being outside in such an unfamiliar environment.

Interview with Jennie Pak and her story ‘Drink This, it’s Good For You’
Born in Kalispell MT, Jennie Pak has deep Montana roots. A love of history and theater lead to her current stint as a living history presenter for Humanities Montana. Jennie travels the state performing her one-hour programs at libraries, schools, assisted living facilities and museums. In her day job, she is a senior care provider for Home Instead Senior Care, where the biggest perk is listening to stories from her clients. In her spare time, Jennie helps as a volunteer organizer for Stories and Stones, an annual historical storytelling event at Missoula Cemetery.
Jenny Pak joins us this week as we talk about her visit to Hong Kong where her in-laws live.
Jenny’s story was recorded in front of a live audience on March 29th, 2016, at The Wilma in Missoula, MT. The theme was “Why Didn’t Anyone Tell Me?”.
Visiting her brother-in-law in Hong Kong, Jenny had an adverse reaction to all of the walking she’s enduring. In an effort to help her heal, she undergoes a regimen of acupuncture, smudging and drinking a mysterious concoction whipped up by a Chinese Medicine Man.
Jenny calls her story “Drink This, it’s Good for You”.

Molly Bradford is the CEO and Co-founder at GatherBoard, the makers of MissoulaEvents.net. Molly takes community connection seriously, as an active member of the Missoula startup ecosystem in addition to her children’s scholastic and community endeavors. Molly is an avid yet amateur gardener, cook, skier, and hunter who likes to put up mass quantities of food for the winter, race her husband and kids down the slopes, and makes telecommuting from Mexico a family priority.
Molly’s story was recorded in front of a live audience on December 10, 2019, at The Wilma in Missoula, MT. The theme was“Tipping Point”.
Molly awakens on the day of the hunt to the sounds of her son coughing with the croup and has to decide if she should cancel the hunt. She calls her story “The Push and the Pull – or – Spilling Milk”

The Trail Less Traveled
Music, Culture & Traditions of Western Sahara
This interview features Mourad El Baggare, who was born in the desert of Western Sahara. Mourad came to Marrakech at age 14 to become a businessman. Mourad now travels through North and West Africa collecting ceremonial masks which he sells to tourists and art collectors in Morocco. Mourad plays traditional music from the Sahara to end each segment after speaking eloquently regarding nomadic lifestyle, culture, food, dress, celestial navigation and philosophy.

Running the Colorado River within the Grand Canyon since 1974 with “Doc”
“Doc” Steve Nicholson was a part of the early rafting descents of the Omo and Blue Nile in Ethiopia in the mid 70s. He started running the Grand Canyon in the early 70s and has run rivers in California, Oregon and Idaho. Doc often is seen rowing a wooden dory. Doc continues to guide whitewater expeditions well into his 70s. Doc practice dentistry for 35 years, he has his private pilot license and flies his own plane to the various rivers he guides on seasonally.

Class V Kayaking & Rafting around the World with Diego Ibanez
This episode was recorded on a rooftop in the Medina of Marrakech, Morocco.
It features an interview with Diego Ibanez, who was born in Arequipa, Peru. Diego is one of the worlds most extreme whitewater kayakers/rafters and has guided on the Futaleufú and Zambezi along with most the class V rivers in Peru. Diego and Mandela guided whitewater together in Morocco’s Middle Atlas Mountains.
