It’s fair weekend, with fair weather ahead – let’s jump on this thrill ride, shall we? The MUG has compiled the coolest and most comprehensive list of events from Thursday thru Sunday in Missoula and around Western Montana, all right here for you to make your own Weekend PICKS!
The Western Montana Fair dominates the weekend, opening at 11:00 am daily, and running all the way through to Sunday at the Missoula Fairgrounds with daily rodeo action in the new Clouse-Bauer Arena, nightly carnival rides, fair food vendors, craft vendors, live music, 4-H competition & judging, and of course the big Lords of Dirt motorcycle flat track races Sunday afternoon and evening.
Vinyl City from Helena is the featured live music at Downtown Tonight in Missoula’s Caras Park from 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm Thursday.
Logjam Presents hosts a double bill at the KettleHouse Amphitheater with the legendary Robert Plant and Alison Krauss performing together in Bonner at 7:30 pm on Thursday, and again on Friday.
Award-winning bluegrass band Full Cord performs along with Montana’s own Blue Point at 7:00 pm to 9:30 pm Thursday at Missoula’s Longstaff House.
Get your fill of Montana Huckleberries this weekend with a visit to the 35th Annual Huckleberry Days Art Festival from Friday thru Sunday at Depot Park in Whitefish.
Missoula Children’s Theater delivers a satisfying set of Beatlemania with performances of the “Let It Be” stage musical at 7:00 pm Friday, and 5:00 pm and 7:00 pm Saturday.
Melissa Carper and her band play old-time mountain music at Missoula’s Longstaff House 7:00 pm to 9:30 pm Friday.
The Bartender’s Tale, a Play by Hamilton Players will have performances Friday and Saturday at 8:00 pm, and a Sunday matinee at 2:00 pm at the Hamilton Players Performance Art Theater in Hamilton.
When was the last time you got to hear “Smoke on the Water” played live? Purple Evolution – a tribute band to Deep Purple – rocks out at 8:00 pm Friday and Saturday nights at The Garden Bar in Bigfork.
If you’re looking for a perfect place to go in Missoula after the fair closes Friday evening, Justin Harris and The Pocket Aces return to raise the roof with some great swingin’ live rockabilly & country music at The Sunrise Saloon starting at 9:30 pm.
Western Montana’s farmers markets are in full swing for the season. Missoula alone has five Saturday markets, and with the rest of the area bustling with fresh local markets every day of the week and weekend. If you’re looking to get the ol’ classic cruiser out for a nice drive, the Cruisin’ By The Bay Car Show by the Mission Valley Cruisers is being held in Polson on Main Street near the Showboat Theater on Saturday from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm.
Bring your bike and hiking shoes as a good excuse to celebrate Missoula’s newest park and open space at Marshall Mountain Park Day 11:00 am to 3:30 pm Saturday.
While you have the family bikes out, Pedal to the Paddleheads! to Ogren Park at Allegiance Field in Missoula on Saturday for a free family-friendly showing of Kung Fu Panda 4 starting at 4:00 pm on the ballpark big screen with concession proceeds benefiting Watson Children’s Shelter – gates open at 2:00 pm.
Our musical pals Wolf & The Moons are performing live in “The Vault” at Philipsburg Brewing – on Saturday from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm.
The Bigfork Summer Playhouse hosts a performance of the new Gershwin musical “Crazy for You” at 8:00 pm Saturday evening.
A staple to the Bitterroot Valley, Parts and Labor return to The Rustic Hut in Florence for a night of classic rock and country – starting at 8:30 pm Saturday.
Another good post-fair entertainment option for Saturday night…Rising young country star Jaden Decker makes a stop at The Sunrise Saloon in Missoula on his Movin’ On Tour, with support from Joe Martinez, starting at 9:30 pm.
On Sunday, come out for a lovely summer evening when the 20th Annual Missoula Symphony in the Park performs at 7:00 pm at Caras Park in Downtown Missoula.
There are at least 70 local music shows of one kind or another in the area throughout the weekend – we have options!
No matter what direction you wanna get outta town, you can’t go wrong. Lots of summer weekend activities and events are happening not only around Missoula, but all the way up the Flathead and the Bitterroot valleys, east to Phillipsburg and Anaconda, and out west past Alberton. If you’re headed up to Whitefish and Glacier, there are some outstanding pit stops to make along the way.
Get out & enjoy our locally-owned bars & restaurants with Montana grown / made food and beverages – they need your business! Try a new local brew! Support our local artists and vendors at the area farmers markets. Take the family for a summertime hike. Get out on the mountain bike. Catch a classic movie screening or a stand-up comedy night. Stretch that big brain at one of the local trivia nights. Sing your favorite karaoke song, or catch a live music show. Enjoy safely and responsibly.
