Man With a Movie Camera, with Live Accompaniment from Travis Yost
The Roxy Theater
718 S. Higgins Avenue, Missoula, Montana
$9 Adults / $8 Students, Seniors, Military / $6 Youth (13 & Under)
Every ten years since 1952, the venerable cinema magazine Sight & Sound polls filmmakers and critics for their lists of the best movies ever made, creating an ever-evolving canon. In 2022, the list arrived once again, generating conversation and controversy throughout the world. This January, the Roxy is proud to present 15 of the 100 greatest films of all time: Selections from the 2022 Sight & Sound List.
#9: MAN WITH A MOVIE CAMERA: One of the most innovative and influential films of the silent era, Dziga Vertov’s Man With A Movie Camera utilizes rapid editing and innumerable other cinematic effects to create a work of amazing modernity and power. This dawn-to-dusk view of urban Soviet life shows people at work, at play, and at the machines that endlessly whirl to keep the metropolis alive. It was Vertov’s first full-length film, and it employs all the cinematic techniques at the director’s disposal—dissolves, split-screens, slow-motion, and freeze-frames—to produce a work that is as exhilarating as it is intellectually brilliant.
Presented with live musical accompaniment from Travis Yost!
Director: Dziga Vertov
Duration: 88 min
Released: 1929
Genre: Documentary/Experimental
Country: Soviet Union

“Puffs”
MCT Center for the Performing Arts
200 N. Adams, Missoula, Montana
$30 Adults / $25 Seniors/Military / $20 Children (under 12)
Inspired by a world-famous book series out of the UK, Puffs, or Seven Increasingly Eventful Years at a Certain School of Magic and Magic introduces audiences to a different perspective of the wizarding world you know. We know the story: Boy discovers he’s a wizard and becomes a student at a school of magic and mystery. However, this boy is named Wayne Hopkins and he is sorted as a “Puff.” The Puffs are a group of students focused on NOT fighting evil and just making it through magic school. Surviving high school is tough enough; now add wicked warlocks and creepy cronies on top of studying and worrying about who you’ll take to the dance! There are a few naughty words mixed among the magical curses in playwright Matt Cox’s story, yet this non-musical, comedic, coming of age tale is for fans of “You Know Who” (no, the other one!) and novices alike.

Last Chance Band – Night 1
Great Northern Bar
27 Central Ave, Whitefish, Montana
$5 at the door
LCB was formed in 2012. It all started on a baseball field. Chance, Nick and their good friend Cody were on a mens league team when the subject came up, “Let’s start a band!”. They met up in an underground tattoo shop in Cd’A daily to start rehearsing. After maybe 20 songs and still no name, they were invited to come in on a Monday to perform their fist gig at the Moose Lounge just across the street.
As LCB started branching out of the Cd’A area they became the house band at the Slab inn in Post falls. They also played as house band at the Roadhouse in Spokane Valley, WA. After a year at each the guys decided house band gigs weren’t giving them the thrill they were looking for so they decided to travel the Northwest putting on shows.
LCB has opened for major acts in the last few years, such as, Chase Rice, Randy Houser, Lonestar, and more. They have won multiple IN-CMA awards and had many other nominations in the past few years.
They released their first single “Dirty” with a music video in 2019. Followed by “Drive” soon after. Early 2020 has given you “Red Bull and fumes” and “Wanted Man” The guys have been working hard in Amplified Wax recording studio to bring you new singles throughout 2020.

The twins also have enjoyed the mentoring of seasoned Nashville songwriters and are producing their best music yet!
The Twins have recently moved to Montana and want to spread their musical talents for all to hear! With a wide variety of covers and originals these two take every stage by storm!

Missoula Symphony Orchestra “The Mountain That Loved a Bird”
UM Dennison Theater
32 Campus Drive, Missoula, Montana
$8Tickets
The Mountain That Loved a Bird is a beautiful story of friendship and renewal. This well-loved story by American author, Alice McLerran, set to music by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Caroline Shaw, highlights universal truths as it tells the lyrical tale of a small bird that changes the life of a cold and barren mountain, in sensitive and poetic prose. The concert also features the art of Eric Carle. These vivid collage illustrations are considered to be some of his finest works. Bring your entire family—this concert is suitable for all ages—to experience an afternoon of music, education, enchantment and audience interaction.
* Tickets for the Family Concert are not included in season ticket subscriptions.
This is a story of a Mountain who was very lonely. This loneliness is lifted when a Bird visits the Mountain, but the Mountain becomes deeply sad and full of grief when the bird is gone.
Art, Music, and Creative Movement help us to immediately understand the feelings in this story and how they relate to times we have felt loneliness, grief, comfort, and joy. Being able to understand and share the feelings of another’s experiences (or story) is called empathy.
Music and performance are the most direct vehicles of empathy; we are called to empathy through storytelling. In relating to the deep grief and sadness in this story, we also get to be reminded that the joy of living is always present, even during the greatest loneliness in our lives. We hope you find light and hope through this beautiful piece as well.

Naturally 7 – a Cappella “Vocal Play” Ensemble
Hamilton Performing Arts Center
327 Fairgrounds Road, Hamilton, Montana
$39 – $45 Reserved Seating
“A capella group” so vastly underplays what Naturally 7 creates onstage that they had to coin a phrase – “Vocal Play” – to more accurately depict what they do. Naturally 7 transforms their voices into actual human instruments, effortlessly producing music of any genre. Their vocal choreography is so perfectly interwoven that they compelled the musical maestro himself, Quincy Jones, to declare that “Naturally 7 is the future of vocal music!!”

The Absent Wilson Conspiracy w/ Bigskylight
Zootown Arts Community Center / ZACC
216 W Main St, Missoula, Montana
$10 // $15 Artist Supporter
The Absent Wilson Conspiracy explores acoustic, and electric jazz through contemplative and spacious original compositions. Drawing rhythmic, harmonic, and melodic textures from across the spectrum of classic and contemporary jazz, the band is driven by a deep love of the collective improvisation at the heart of jazz. Also known as The Captain Wilson Conspiracy, the band began conspiring in Missoula Montana nearly a decade ago. After keyboardist Keaton Wilson moved to Arizona, bassist Steve Kalling, guitarist DR Halsell, and percussionist Ed Stalling adopted the ‘Absent Wilson’ moniker as a way to acknowledge the origin and connection while forming the nucleus of an expanding group of like-minded conspirators. In recent years, Helena-based composer and pianist Steven Gores joined the fun. His emotional and cinematic compositions made him complicit from the first note.
Montana has a way of pulling together people who love wild places and find the particular kind of quiet that comes in the wind and wide sky. This experience of the wide-open spaces and the people and communities who live here, has shaped their compositions. They look forward to sharing these stories and exploring the spaces they shape from the ZACC stage this January.
Bigskylight’s music is inspired by the subtle differences in the color and timbre of light across the Montana sky. It is created to slow down, go deep and listen. Dynamic and fluid, the ensemble revolves around the ethereal and sound of the hand-pan (a contemplative relative of the steel drum).
