Weekend PICKS: Thursday, January 5th thru Sunday, January 8th

Welcome to 2023! January is here, and we have a Full Moon Friday to get it going. Let’s illuminate what’s going on!
Once again, The MUG has compiled the most comprehensive list of events in Missoula and around Western Montana, all right here for you to make your own Weekend PICKS – Thursday thru Sunday.
With the holidays in the rearview, all the local ski resorts have settled into season – now the crowds are gone, and the daily temperatures and conditions are just about perfect. Many of the local cross-country and fat biking hotspots are being groomed and skiied. Britt Arnesen is playing live bluegrass around the warming fire up at the Lolo Pass Visitor Center for a Full-Moon XC Ski at 8:00 pm Friday.
It’s a First Friday in downtown Missoula. Make it a good excuse to wander around for an evening of local art, music and supporting small businesses.
There are more than 60 local music shows of one kind or another in the area throughout the weekend. We’ve got options!
No matter what direction you wanna get outta town, you can’t go wrong. Lots of weekend activities and events are happening not only around Missoula, but all the way up the Flathead and the Bitterroot valleys, east to Phillipsburg and Anaconda, and out west past Alberton.
Get out and enjoy our locally-owned bars & restaurants with Montana grown / made food and beverages. Support our local farmers and crafts people. Take the family for a crisp hike or some amazing skiing. Catch a classic movie screening or a stand-up comedy night. Stretch that big brain at one of the local trivia nights. Sing your favorite karaoke song, or catch a live music show. Enjoy safely and responsibly.
Please confirm event details at the source before you go. Last minute changes are common, especially due to weather and the holiday. With each event listing, we try to include a web page or event link with more information you can check for changes.

Gallery Opening: ‘Who’s Playing Tonight?’ works by Tim ArrowTop & Dónal Cían Lakatua
Zootown Arts Community Center / ZACC
216 W Main St, Missoula, Montana
Tim ArrowTop
This collection is composed of many weird and small music events that have happened in Missoula within the last five or so years. These are the spaces where I see familiar faces and experience their joy through rhythm and noise. I also have permanent hearing damage and I’d like to convey that with these images.
Dónal Cían Lakatua
Art can happen anywhere. The eight images I’ve contributed to this gallery were made between 2018 and 2022, taken in bars, bike garages, basements, and living rooms. All of these shows were made possible due to the dedication and passion of hundreds of Missoulians who spent all their energy keeping Missoula alive. To the bands, organizers, dancers, and artists who have made and will continue to make Missoula cool, I hope these images serve as a reminder of what true community feels like.
