Weekend PICKS: Thursday, March 23rd thru Sunday, March 26th
Can you believe it’s the first weekend of spring? The MUG has compiled the most comprehensive list of events in Missoula and around Western Montana, all right here for you to make your own Weekend PICKS – Thursday thru Sunday!
While the valleys are seeing the slush drifts melting away, there is excellent spring skiing to be found at all of Montana’s resorts. Check ahead for the local snow reports, and go! Many of the local cross-country and fat biking hotspots are still being groomed and skiied. Get out and shred that gnar!
And, it’s not too soon to get out and start prepping the garden. From the Seed Swap happening Saturday to the big Home & Garden Show at the UM’s Adams Center, there is no good reason to not be outside.
There are more than 80 local music shows of one kind or another in the area throughout the weekend. Ani DiFranco playing The Wilma on Friday, and there are numerous great local musicians and venues to check out each evening…We’ve got options!
No matter what direction you wanna get outta town, you can’t go wrong. Lots of weekend activities and events are happening not only around Missoula, but all the way up the Flathead and the Bitterroot valleys, east to Phillipsburg and Anaconda, and out west past Alberton.
Get out and enjoy our locally-owned bars & restaurants with Montana grown / made food and beverages. Try a new local brew! Support our local farmers and crafts people. Take the family for a crisp hike or some great spring skiing. Catch a classic movie screening or a stand-up comedy night. Stretch that big brain at one of the local trivia nights. Sing your favorite karaoke song, or catch a live music show. Enjoy safely and responsibly.
Please confirm event details at the source before you go. Last minute changes are common, especially due to weather. With each event listing, we try to include a web page or event link with more information you can check for changes.

MCT presents Red Riding Hood
Missoula Center for the Performing Arts
200 N. Adams, Missoula, Montana
Adapted by Michael McGill
Music and Lyrics by Michael McGill
$10Adult Tickets / $5 Children & Seniors
Over the river and through the woods to Grandmother’s house she goes. Red Riding Hood, not so little anymore, and her pre-teen pals try to stay on the straight and narrow in the latest adventure from the Missoula Children’s Theatre, RED RIDING HOOD. The Big Bad Wolf, who is not so bad after all, and a friendly neighborhood Forest Ranger urge our heroes to stay true to the path, for in the Shadows lurk diversions and a sinister surprise or two. A pack of woefully nasty young wolves and a handsome Woodsman, too good to be true, are a must for our story. And we can’t have a wolf tale without Three Little Pigs and even a Boy Who Cries…you guessed it. With help from her family and a loyal young Locksmith (he carries the key), Red finds her Grandma and a whole lot more. Now if only she could retrieve her picnic basket from those rascally Raccoons. Life is no picnic when you stray from the trail!

If Jimmy Buffett, James Taylor and John Prine were joined together in some bizarre musical cloning experiment, the outcome would be John Dunnigan. This “offbeat” musician and entertainer took the backroads to Montana over three decades ago and never left (he’s no fool). Today, he performs throughout Montana and the Northwest at bierstubes, corporate events, weddings, schools, fairs and festive brouhahas of every conceivable kind. His original, often hilarious songs make you think, laugh, sing along and raise your glass in a toast to life. In short, he can put a smile on your face.

Shrek The Musical Jr.
Bigfork Center for the Performing Arts
526 Electric Ave, Bigfork, Montana
Presented by the Bigfork Playhouse Children’s Theatre
It’s a “big bright beautiful world” for everyone’s favorite ogre in Shrek The Musical JR., based on the Oscar-winning DreamWorks Animation film. In a faraway kingdom, the green ogre Shrek finds his swamp invaded by banished fairytale misfits, runaways who’ve been cast off by Lord Farquaad, a tiny terror with big ambitions. When Shrek sets off with a wise-cracking donkey to confront Farquaad, he’s handed a task – if he rescues feisty Princess Fiona from the Dragon-guarded tower, his swamp will be returned to him. But, a fairy tale wouldn’t be complete without unexpected twists and turns along the way. Part romance and part twisted fairy tale, Shrek JR. is an irreverently fun show for the whole family.

Richie Reinholdt picked up the guitar at age 11 and was soon playing in local bands through junior high and high school. After his father passed away in 1975, Richie moved to South Lake Tahoe to be near his Mother. While there, he met and joined The Live Wire Choir and toured the northwest for 4 years in a green, 1945 Flexible bus. They were signed to a one-album deal with Helios Records, based in Missoula, Montana and recorded the “Blue” album.
When L.W.C. disbanded in 1979, Richie left California and moved to Missoula. Richie toured with local bands such as “The Skanksters” (1986-1988), The Blazers”(1989-1991),”The Dreadbeats”(1991-1993) and was lucky enough to tour the beautiful Adariatic countries of Slovenia, Italy and Austria of Southern Central Europe with “The Psyclones” (1993) “The Shadows” (1994) “The Wolfrats (1995) and “The Sundogz” (1996).
