Weekend PICKS: Thursday, March 2nd thru Sunday, March 5th

Oh, hey March – what’s up?! The MUG has compiled the most comprehensive list of events in Missoula and around Western Montana, all right here for you to make your own Weekend PICKS – Thursday thru Sunday!
The brutally cold temps are mostly in the rearview. What’s left of winter remains for the taking. Check ahead for the local snow reports, and go! Many of the local cross-country and fat biking hotspots are being groomed and skiied. Get out and shred that gnar!
With the turn of the calendar to March, it’s a First Friday in Downtown Missoula. Get out and soak up some culture (along with complimentary snacks and beverages) at all the hot spots around Downtown.
There are around 80 local music shows of one kind or another in the area throughout the weekend. We’ve got options!
No matter what direction you wanna get outta town, you can’t go wrong. Lots of weekend activities and events are happening not only around Missoula, but all the way up the Flathead and the Bitterroot valleys, east to Phillipsburg and Anaconda, and out west past Alberton.
Get out and enjoy our locally-owned bars & restaurants with Montana grown / made food and beverages. Support our local farmers and crafts people. Take the family for a crisp hike or some amazing skiing. Catch a classic movie screening or a stand-up comedy night. Stretch that big brain at one of the local trivia nights. Sing your favorite karaoke song, or catch a live music show. Enjoy safely and responsibly.
Please confirm event details at the source before you go. Last minute changes are common, especially due to weather. With each event listing, we try to include a web page or event link with more information you can check for changes.

THURSDAY, March 2
“By March, the worst of the winter would be over. The snow would thaw, the rivers begin to run and the world would wake into itself again.”
– Neil Gaiman

Larry Hirshberg
KettleHouse Brewing Co.
605 Cold Smoke Avenue, Bonner, Montana
Bio: For more than 40 years, Hirshberg has been writing songs and performing solo and in various bands, combos, corners, basements, wine bars, beer palaces, bourbon holes, forest glades, pseudo AND very real festivals, libraries, chili making contests, living rooms (luxury AND crusty), theaters, biker parties, consciousness-raising places, memory care facilities, and places that have long since burned down, to name a few. His solo show, for the last 10 years or so is an all original situation involving what seems like singer-songwriter stuff at first, but through the use of ELECTRICITY veers quickly into the PSYCHEDELIC realm and then just as suddenly lands the listener back in the venue. You know how they say “it’s never the same river twice?” – At a Hirshberg show it’s never the same listener twice.

Jesse was born from the mountains, and learned at a young age his song from the songbirds. He’s traveled the cosmos in search of of the secret and wants to share the beauty with anyone who will take the time. Taking influences from Thom Yorke, Leslie Feist, Robin Pecknold, and Jeff Buckley. Lush, atmosphere harmonies and intense lyrics make up most of his sound. Blending color and emotion, Jesse will take you on a journey you didn’t know you needed to take. He uses a loop pedal to create layers of atmospheric goodness with vocal harmonies and angel sounds.

TNR / Thursday Night HIKE
Barmeyer Trail
Missoula, Montana
With the cold and wind last Thursday we don’t think anyone ventured out for Thursday night. So we’ll give Barmeyer another go this week. It should be about 30 degrees warmer! We’ll hike up to the Overlook and possibly beyond depending on the conditions. Meet at the Barmeyer Trailhead on Pattee Canyon Road.
We’re only two weeks away from the time change which is when we usually switch back to biking. However, there’s not much dirt to be had around town at this point. So we might hike for a bit longer this year. It’s a good time to get your bike into the shop.
See you out there!

The School of Theatre and Dance is proud to present ‘Pride and Prejudice’ March 2-12 in the Montana Theatre of the PAR/TV Center on campus. The play is written by Kate Hamill, adapted from the 1813 novel. Revered author Jane Austen defined her iconic novel as “light and bright and sparkling,” which perfectly describes this charming, ironic 2017 stage adaptation. The renowned Bennet sisters and their suitors—suitable and unsuitable alike—are brought to life in inventive, winsome ways that will surprise audiences familiar with the novel’s twists and delight those for whom the madcap matchmaking is brand-new.

The Suffers
Wachholz College Center
795 Grandview Drive, Kalispell, Montana
$33 – $49Advance Seated Tickets (+ applicable service fees)
Founded in 2011 in Houston, TX, The Suffers built a devoted local following before breaking out internationally in 2015 on the strength of their extraordinary debut EP, Make Some Room, which helped land them performances everywhere from Letterman to NPR’s Tiny Desk. The band followed it up in 2016 with a self-titled full-length that yielded similarly widespread acclaim along with star-making performances at Newport Folk and on The Daily Show with Trevor Noah. By the time the group released their 2018 sophomore effort, Everything Here, their arrival as critical and festival favorites was undeniable: NPR praised the “multidimensional, multicultural possibilities of their take on soul,” while The Guardian called the album an “adventurous” collection that “blends 70s R&B, disco, jazz, and contemporary gospel,” and Rolling Stone proclaimed it “an inspired vision of roots music.”
It Starts With Love… marks the band’s debut release for Missing Piece Records.
This show is presented by WCC.

Founded in 2011, The Suffers built a devoted local following in Houston before breaking out internationally with their 2015 debut EP, Make Some Room, which helped land them performances everywhere from Letterman to NPR’s Tiny Desk. The band followed it up in 2016 with a self-titled full-length album that yielded similar acclaim, along with star-making performances at the Newport Folk Festival and on The Daily Show. By the time the group released their 2018 sophomore effort, Everything Here, their arrival as critical and festival favorites was undeniable, with NPR praising the “multidimensional, multicultural possibilities of their take on soul,” and The Guardian hailing their “adventurous” blend of 70s R&B, disco, jazz, and contemporary gospel. Rolling Stone proclaimed The Suffers “an inspired vision of roots music.”
