Weekend PICKS: Thursday, May 18th thru Sunday, May 21st
The MUG has compiled the most comprehensive list of events in Missoula and around Western Montana, all right here for you to make your own Weekend PICKS!
Summer Farmers Markets season is well underway, with a few more opening up this weekend in our area (Ronan, Columbia Falls, St. Ignatius). Surf’s up on our local rivers. It’s green and pleasant everywhere. Can’t say we’re quite ready for smoke season (are we ever?) And if the crazy level seems a little high around town, that’s because it’s Missoula’s annual Maggotfest weekend.
There are over 90 local music shows of one kind or another in the area throughout the weekend…we’ve got options!
No matter what direction you wanna get outta town, you can’t go wrong. Lots of springtime weekend activities and events are happening not only around Missoula, but all the way up the Flathead and the Bitterroot valleys, east to Phillipsburg and Anaconda, and out west past Alberton.
Patios have opened everywhere – get out and enjoy our locally-owned bars & restaurants with Montana grown / made food and beverages. Try a new local brew! Support our local farmers and crafts people at the farmers markets. Take the family for a spring hike, or get the bikes out for a big ride. Catch a classic movie screening or a stand-up comedy night. Stretch that big brain at one of the local trivia nights. Sing your favorite karaoke song, or catch a live music show. Enjoy safely and responsibly.
Please confirm event details at the source before you go. Last minute changes are common, especially due to weather. With each event listing, we try to include a web page or event link with more information you can check for changes.

Marcedes Carroll Music
Smelter City Brewing
101 Main St, Anaconda, Montana
Marcedes Carroll is a southwestern Montana musician. With a guitar in tow, she bends Americana melodies to her stylistic storytelling.
From a young age singing lullabies to her brothers cradled in the Rocky Mountains, to her adult years telling stories in dimly lit bars, Marcedes Carroll has found her voice best behind a guitar. Coming from a long line of weathered Nordics, who have eventually found their way to the rugged landscape of Southwest Montana, she has a bloodline of stories to tell.
“She’s a powerhouse singer who can boom like Etta and croon like Ella, and she writes visual lyrics that draw upon her the mountains and streams that define the Last Best Place as much as they do her own well-rounded sensibilities.” —Skip Anderson, The Bozone.com
Marcedes plays a mix of originals as well as lively covers including but not limited to Emmylou Harris, Gram Parsons, Lucinda Williams, The Band, John Prine, Micky and the Motorcars, and so many more!

Barefoot in the Park
Cutler Bros. Theatre
301 Main St, Deer Lodge, Montana
$20 tickets (+convenience fee)
The Cutler Brother’s 19th Summer Theatre Season in Deer Lodge will kick off with one of Neil Simon’s most popular plays in “Barefoot in the Park” this May. Cutler Bros. Theatre will also produce Disney’s “Tarzan” this June and “Willy Wonka” in late July into August.
“Barefoot in the Park” is a simple story set in New York City and with a small cast. Corie Bratter (Jerrika Marjerison) and her husband Paul (Joshua Pentland) move into a “not so plush” New York high-rise and quickly discover many a problem with their new living space. Corie is energetic and spunky while Paul is more of the business-type, and these diverse personalities naturally cause some friction laying the groundwork for the play.
Jaycee Wood makes her Cutler Bros. debut and plays the overbearing mother of Corie while Steve Collins of Anaconda will play the well-traveled and witty Victor Velasco. Steve first stepped on stage in Deer Lodge last season as the rabbi in “Fiddler on the Roof.” Rounding out the cast is the phone repair man played by a Deer Lodge-favorite Tom Gomola.
Erin Jewell is directing the show making this her third directorial assignment in the last 2 years. “I’m excited for the cast, they’re small but they’ll bring a punch,” said Jewell. She went on, “Summer Theatre has become a special thing in this community and I’m happy to be at the helm for the first show of the season.”
“Barefoot in the Park” tickets are $20 and may be purchased at cutlerbros.com or by reserving at (406) 846-4096. Shows run May 5th – 21st , Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 pm and Sunday matinees at 2:00 pm. All showings take place at the Cutler Bros. Theatre in Deer Lodge. (latent) is a Missoula based band composed of Zack Buchholz, Nick Togliatti, and Jake Swank. These three fellers have been playing music together for nearly a decade, and this band is a culmination of their endeavors to incorporate absurdity, sincerity, and high energy music into a single intense project.
Witch Bitch is a two-piece band that leaves your skull in two pieces. Dark, tropical, and fuzzy, Witch Bitch melts tsunamis, ancient pyramids, and corpse effluvium in a sonic crucible. What remains will make your bones rattle – sludgy surf that’s sweeter than sipping a piña colada on a private beach in hell.
Ryan King is an artist, mostly with music and poetry, but every once in a while he gets out the paint and makes a mess too. He loves singing a good song and manipulating effects to create improvised chaos/beauty. He just might love you, too.
