Weekend PICKS: Thursday, May 4th thru Sunday, May 7th
[wpdreams_ajaxsearchlite]
What’s goin’ ON?! (Deep breath)…It’s the first weekend of May (BTW, May the 4th be with you!); we have a First Friday which also happens to be Cinco de Mayo. It’s the opening weekend of the summer Farmers Markets season here in Missoula. Surf’s up on our local rivers. It’s green and pleasant everywhere. And a ton of great choices.
The MUG has compiled the most comprehensive list of events in Missoula and around Western Montana, all right here for you to make your own Weekend PICKS!
There are nearly 100 local music shows of one kind or another in the area throughout the weekend…we’ve got options!
No matter what direction you wanna get outta town, you can’t go wrong. Lots of springtime weekend activities and events are happening not only around Missoula, but all the way up the Flathead and the Bitterroot valleys, east to Phillipsburg and Anaconda, and out west past Alberton.
Get out and enjoy our locally-owned bars & restaurants with Montana grown / made food and beverages. Try a new local brew! Support our local farmers and crafts people at the first markets of the season. Take the family for a spring hike, or get the bikes out for your first big ride. Catch a classic movie screening or a stand-up comedy night. Stretch that big brain at one of the local trivia nights. Sing your favorite karaoke song, or catch a live music show. Enjoy safely and responsibly.
Please confirm event details at the source before you go. Last minute changes are common, especially due to weather. With each event listing, we try to include a web page or event link with more information you can check for changes.

Barefoot in the Park
Cutler Bros. Theatre
301 Main St, Deer Lodge, Montana
$20 tickets plus convenience fee
About this event
The Cutler Brother’s 19th Summer Theatre Season in Deer Lodge will kick off with one of Neil Simon’s most popular plays in “Barefoot in the Park” this May. Cutler Bros. Theatre will also produce Disney’s “Tarzan” this June and “Willy Wonka” in late July into August.
“Barefoot in the Park” is a simple story set in New York City and with a small cast. Corie Bratter (Jerrika Marjerison) and her husband Paul (Joshua Pentland) move into a “not so plush” New York high-rise and quickly discover many a problem with their new living space. Corie is energetic and spunky while Paul is more of the business-type, and these diverse personalities naturally cause some friction laying the groundwork for the play.
Jaycee Wood makes her Cutler Bros. debut and plays the overbearing mother of Corie while Steve Collins of Anaconda will play the well-traveled and witty Victor Velasco. Steve first stepped on stage in Deer Lodge last season as the rabbi in “Fiddler on the Roof.” Rounding out the cast is the phone repair man played by a Deer Lodge-favorite Tom Gomola.
Erin Jewell is directing the show making this her third directorial assignment in the last 2 years. “I’m excited for the cast, they’re small but they’ll bring a punch,” said Jewell. She went on, “Summer Theatre has become a special thing in this community and I’m happy to be at the helm for the first show of the season.”
“Barefoot in the Park” tickets are $20 and may be purchased at cutlerbros.com or by reserving at (406) 846-4096. Shows run May 5th – 21st , Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 pm and Sunday matinees at 2:00 pm. All showings take place at the Cutler Bros. Theatre in Deer Lodge. For more information please visit the website or call the box office number listed above.

“The middle of August 2020 was the last time Rosie was last seen alive. On May 4, 2021, we finally got confirmation that a body found in November 2020 was indeed Miranda Rose Kenmille, aka Rosie.
Rosie was born on October 16, 1984. She was a wonderful sister, aunt, friend, cousin, and human. She had a passion for cooking, and music, and being there for us. Rosie, La, Allie, and Felicity are biologically my cousins, but my sisters and brothers by heart. When my mom passed away, they moved in with me and helped me. Rosie was also a big supporter of me and my goals as a burlesque dancer. She always encouraged me and gave me feedback on my choreography, music choice, and costuming. She was the second oldest and had a heart of gold and calmness about her. She really did make you feel like you could do anything. We laid her to rest on May 8, 2021. She was a rock for so many people. Not just me but also our sister Felicity. They were always like two peas in a pod. The headstone we would like to get Rosie is $1,200. I am hosting this show and another show on Friday, October 13, 2023, at KwaTaqNuk on our reservation to help pay for the headstone and placement.”

Sara Gazarek – Double Grammy-Nominated Jazz Vocalist
Hamilton Performing Arts Center
327 Fairgrounds Road, Hamilton, Montana
Tickets $42 – $49
Graced with an “impeccable” voice (Winnipeg Free Press), Sara Gazarek has been one of the leading lights of an impressive generation of jazz vocalists since her brilliant emergence at age 20. Gazarek’s experience began in the overcast light of Seattle, where she was originally drawn to musical theater and dance but fell in love with the jazz choir during high school. She went on to study at the University of Southern California, where she’s now been a member of the faculty for eight years. While her subsequent career has been the picture of success – highlighted by five acclaimed albums, an ardent fanbase, enthusiastic reviews, a teaching position at the University of Southern California, and collaborations with such luminaries as Kurt Elling, Fred Hersch, Billy Childs, and Larry Goldings – it is with her latest double GRAMMY® nominated album, Thirsty Ghost, that Gazarek finally brings her musical expression stunningly into phase with her emotional maturity. Prompted by an intense period of personal and professional upheaval, the “exquisite taste, bright wit and creative vitality” hailed by WNPR remain, but those qualities are potently shaded by a rich undercurrent of complex feeling and whole-hearted realities.

$20 Suggested Donation
Ready for a unique and talented take on a wide range of musical traditions? Claude Bourbon is known throughout Europe and America for amazing guitar performances that take blues, Spanish, and Middle Eastern stylings into uncharted territories.
Claude’s inimitable style incorporates all five digits on each hand dancing independently but in unison, plucking, picking and strumming at such speed and precision that his fingers often seem to melt into a blur. Thousands of people in the UK, Europe and USA have enjoyed listening to this virtuoso and for the majority of his audience it is an experience that compels them to return again and again to hear and watch him play, as his fingers lightly dance over the strings of his guitar and create a unique sound that is ’Claude’.
Now based in the UK, some of this guitarists’ influences allow us a fascinating insight into this remarkable musician; Paco De Lucia: Deep Purple’s Richie Blackmore; Joaquin Rodrigo; JJ Cale; JS Bach….
Claude has played countless venues, including Glastonbury Festival, Isle of Wight Festival, Colne Great British & Blues Festival, Rock O’Z Arene, Avenches, Switzerland, among others. He has shared the stage in Europe and the USA with countless musicians, Calvin Russel, Charlie Morgan (Elton John, Gary Moore), Jan Akkerman (Focus), Steve Grossman (Miles Davis), Herbie Armstrong (Van Morisson), Jose barrense Dias and many more.
