Weekend PICKS: Thursday, September 5th thru Sunday, September 8th
Our roots are showing! River City Roots, that is. This is one of the biggest music weekends of the year, and Missoula’s River City Roots Festival leads the way on Friday and Saturday. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg. The MUG has compiled the most comprehensive list of events in Missoula and around Western Montana, all right here for you to make your own Weekend PICKS!
The 18th Annual River City Roots Festival returns to Downtown Missoula with a weekend of live music on the big Main Street stage 12:30 pm to 10:00 pm Friday, and then from 12 Noon to 10:00 pm Saturday. Don’t miss the 4-Mile River City Roots Run at 6:30 am Saturday morning, and later on take the kids to Caras Park for the River City Roots Family Festival 10:00 am to 2:00 pm.
Downtown Missoula is going to be a beehive of activity with First Friday also happening – many downtown businesses will be open later with complimentary snacks and beverages, and all manner of artists displaying exhibits. Downtown Hamilton also has their own First Friday happening, very much worth stopping by for those in the Bitterroot.
After the Roots Fest wraps up after 10:00 pm, Groove Solventless & Logjam Presents welcome back Off in the Woods for a FREE live concert performance at the Top Hat in Downtown Missoula at 10:15 pm on First Friday.
Another late night option, the Josh Farmer Band is playing live Friday starting at 9:00 pm at The Union Club in Downtown Missoula.
If the area still seems a little extra-smoky this weekend, it might be from The Montana State Hemp and Cannabis Festival returning to Lolo Hot Springs for three days of reggae music and hemp / cannabis-related products and crafts from Friday thru Sunday.
Western Montana’s farmers markets are hitting the home stretch for the summer season. Missoula alone has five Saturday markets, and with the rest of the area bustling with fresh local markets every day of the week and weekend. Check out The MUG’s Guide to Summer Western Montana Farmers Markets and you can see ’em all any time on The MUG Events Calendar. We’re here to help!

Over in Philipsburg, they’ll be celebrating the 20th Annual Miners Union Day at Philipsburg Brewing Company Saturday beginning at 9:00 am.

If you’re still looking to finish out the weekend with music on Sunday evening, Logjam Presents welcomes Greensky Bluegrass for a live concert performance on their Summer 2024 Tour at The Wilma in Downtown Missoula at 8:00 pm on Sunday.
There are at least 70 local music shows of one kind or another in the area throughout the Labor Day weekend – we have options!
No matter what direction you wanna get outta town, you can’t go wrong. Lots of weekend activities and events are happening not only around Missoula, but all the way up the Flathead and the Bitterroot valleys, east to Phillipsburg and Anaconda, and out west past Alberton. If you’re headed up to Whitefish and Glacier, there are some outstanding pit stops to make along the way.
Get out & enjoy our locally-owned bars & restaurants with Montana grown / made food and beverages – they need your business! Try a new local brew! Support our local artists and vendors at the area farmers markets. Take the family for a summertime hike. Get out on the mountain bike. Catch a classic movie screening or a stand-up comedy night. Stretch that big brain at one of the local trivia nights. Sing your favorite karaoke song, or catch a live music show. Enjoy safely and responsibly.
