Mother’s Day Weekend PICKS: Thursday, May 5th thru Sunday, May 8th
What’s going on this weekend? – What ISN’T going on?! The MUG has compiled the most comprehensive list of this weekend’s events in Missoula and around Western Montana, all right here for you to make your own Weekend PICKS. Let’s see…
Thursday is Cinco de Mayo. Get out for the outstanding Mexican food specials and beverages that we wish were happening all year long.
It’s First Friday not only in Downtown Missoula, but the monthly promotion has been picked up in the towns along the Bitterroot and Flathead valleys. You can only take in so many, but wherever you find yourself on Friday, you’ll find some great food, beverages, and local artists hosted by local businesses – that’s a great combo.
This weekend marks the opening of many of the biggest farmers markets in Western Montana. You’ll find ’em here, and for a complete list of over 2 dozen in the area, check out our Western Montana Farmers Markets story posted recently on The MUG.
Last but certainly not least, Sunday is Mother’s Day! Treat your favorite mom(s) to something great for brunch or lunch, there are all kinds of outdoor activities and music offerings to make a memorable day. Even better, string a bunch of these together to maximize your quality time with mom all weekend long.
And – it’s Missoula Gives time, the whole weekend long, with more related events than we can even count. Consider giving a little love back to the nonprofits who collectively make this place an even better place.
We’re counting at least 85 music shows of one kind or another in the area. We’ve got options!
No matter what direction you wanna get outta town, you can’t go wrong. Activities and events are happening not only around Missoula, but all the way up the Flathead and the Bitterroot valleys, and Phillipsburg.
Get out and enjoy our locally-owned bars & restaurants with Montana grown / made food and beverages. Support our local farmers and crafts people. Catch a classic movie screening or a stand-up comedy night. Stretch that big brain at one of the local trivia nights. Sing your favorite karaoke song, or catch a live music show. Enjoy safely and responsibly.
Please confirm event details at the source before you go. Last minute changes are common, especially due to weather. With each event listing, we try to include a web page or event link with more information you can check for changes.

The UM School of Theatre and Dance and School of Music are pleased to present ‘She Loves Me,’ a charming and romantic musical from the end of Broadway’s Golden Age. ‘She Loves Me’ follows the farcical travails of co-workers Amalia and Georg, who are combative competitors in a high-end Budapest perfume shop by day while unknowingly smitten with one another as anonymous pen pals outside the workplace. All performances will be held in the Montana Theatre in UM’s Performing Arts and Radio/Television Center.

Monday through Saturday 10 AM to 6 PM and Sunday noon to 4 PM
This May the ZACC is holding a visual art show in our Main Gallery centered around the observance of the National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women. This show aims to hold the space for artists of Indigenous experience to show work of protest in whatever way they see fit. Sometimes the art of protest incorporates symbols of revolt such as the red handprint that has come to symbolize the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women Movement. Other times art of protest looks like visual expressions of anger or sadness, or sometimes even defiant acts of radical joy and pride amid grief and fear. This show includes the work of artists Stephanie Hohn, Jen Buckley, Stella Nall, Monica Gilles-BringsYellow, Windsong Redtail Hawk, David Speer, Danielle Adler, & Tasheena WolfChief.

First Annual BSHP Pet Run
Big Sky Horse Park/Missoula Horse Council
35th & North, Missoula, Montana
Click the link to sign up: https://bigskyhorsepark.org/…/bshp-first-annual-pet-run/
We welcome you, your dog, your friends, family, and neighbors to a fun-filled day of racing, prizes, vendors, and pet portraits at the Big Sky Horse Park in Missoula, MT.
This is a competitive, timed running event limited to 1 dog per human. This year walkers and runners will complete 3 km or 6 km (1 or 2 laps) on fine crushed gravel within the boundaries of the Big Sky Horse Park.
We have partnered with Run Wild Missoula to create a professional, high-quality event!
The Big Sky Horse Park, located at the heart of Missoula County, is beautifully maintained and actively preserved by a board of equestrian-focused volunteers- all of whom are also dog owners!
The Missoula Horse Council leases more than 90 acres of the park from Missoula County to host events and provide open space for all. Though equestrian activities are seasonal, the Big Sky Horse Park is open 365 days of the year to walkers, runners, dog owners, and high school track teams. The primary purpose of the BSHP Pet Run is to bring these communities together to share the beauty, location, and non-equestrian benefits of the park. Because the Big Sky Horse Park is not a dedicated park, it is always at risk of disappearing and being replaced by development.
We need your support to protect the park for the long term. The best way to do so is to become a “Friends of the Horse Park Member”! Your yearly $20 membership helps pay for the upkeep and preservation of the wildlife habitat and green space inside the Big Sky Horse Park.

Hibernator + JERF + Mido Skip
Zootown Arts Community Center
216 W Main Street, Missoula, Montana
$10 // $15 Tour Supporter Ticket To purchase advance tickets visit: https://showroom.zootownarts.org/…/hibernator-jerf…/
Hibernator hails from southwest Montana. Hibernator began in 2016 with Phillip Yanzick on guitar and lead vocals and Zachary Jurcich on lead guitar. The band attracted the attention of Anthony Vesco and Ricky Schade, now the drummer and bass player respectively. The sound of the band includes elements of post rock with flares of ambiance and early 2000s emo. For fans of Balance and Composure, Citizen, and Movements, Hibernator has its own way of catching listeners’ attention through heavy rhythm sections and melodic vocals.
JERF is a multi-instrumentalist, pinball wizard, soccer player, movie watcher, and songwriter steeped in the tradition of the traveling troubadour; part Americana, part Indie Rock, and full of the same positive vibes that came from the California Folk-Rock scene that spawned Jackson Browne & Tom Petty. His songwriting reflects a perspective about the world that is both critical and full of joy, and he is passionate about questioning how we can do better with the unique experience that has been given to us as human beings.
From the great city of Missoula, Mido Skip started out as a simple idea, formulating into one of the biggest conspiracies to date. It is said that on a full moon you can hear the mad ravings of the nü-emo band from abandoned alleyways. Have you captured a glimpse of this enigmatic event? If you’re lucky enough, it could change how you look at yourself, and the world as you know it.

Smith/McKay All Day Album Release featuring Protest Kids + Tom Catmull Music
Monk’s Bar Missoula
221 Ryman Street, Missoula, Montana
$10 Advance Tickets / 21+ Show
Smith/McKay All Day is a 2-man band that’s as full sounding as a 4-piece. Ex-Gourds co-frontman Jimmy Smith and bluesman Pat McKay with drum stomping, guitar banging and vocalizing old Gourd, HardPans, Slo-Red faves and whatever’s on the Smitty madness menu this week.
Jimmy Smith is best known for his two decades’ performing with famed Austin, TX alt-country outfit, The Gourds, as one of the two principal songwriters and bass player. Alongside Kevin “Shinyribs” Russell, Max Johnston (formerly of Wilco), Claude Bernard and Keith Langford, the band relentlessly toured the country, playing every festival stage imaginable and recording with the likes of Doug Sahm and long-time Bob Dylan sideman, Larry Campbell.
Though their days as a band came to an end in 2013, Jimmy has continued playing music as The Hard Pans, the Jimmy Smith System and most recently as a power duo in Smith-McKay All Day.
He currently resides in Missoula, MT, longtime 2nd home to The Gourds.
Please check out the Smith/McKay All Day website for more information on the new album.

Zootown Arts Community Center
216 W Main Street, Missoula, Montana
$15 To purchase advance tickets visit: https://showroom.zootownarts.org/…/naomi-moon-siegel…/
Trombonist and composer Naomi Moon Siegel has “crafted a truly unique aesthetic, combining elements of straight-ahead, fusion and modern jazz with world-music flavors in a way that sounds entirely of the 21st century” (JAZZIZ). A recipient of the Montana Arts Council Artist Innovation Award, Earshot Jazz Golden Ear Award, and member of the 4th Mutual Mentorship for Musicians cohort, she has released two albums as a bandleader to critical acclaim. Playing music inspired by the Black American Music tradition, Siegel will be joined by local phenoms Tommy Sciple on bass and Ed Stalling on drums. Twisting the corners of folk, blues, and jazz into immediately personal songs, Jenn Adams is internationally recognized for her distinctive sound and well-crafted songwriting. With an extensive wealth of experience and craft, her songs scale a diverse foundation that refuses to blend into the ordinary. Sparsely decorated, bluesy ballads are her trademark but by no means a limitation. Known for her warm and inclusive live performances, she is widely regarded as one of the most genuine artists on the acoustic circuit.
