Weekend PICKS: Thursday, June 8th thru Sunday, June 11th
We’ve been waiting for this one! The MUG has compiled the most comprehensive list of events in Missoula and around Western Montana, all right here for you to make your own Weekend PICKS!
Top of our list is the big Missoula XC Pro Mountain Bike racing weekend at Marshall Mountain Park. The forecast is for off & on rainy – perfect conditions for watching the best bike racers from around the USA and Montana battle it out in our own backyard. Marshall’s looking mint, and the XC is a great opportunity to get up there & check out our city’s newest recreation area.
Summer Farmers Markets season is in full swing, with more opening up this weekend (Hamilton Fair Market/Friday). The annual Mission Valley Chainsaw Carving Rendezvous is happening all weekend in Ronan. Surf’s up on our local rivers. It’s green and pleasant everywhere. Prime springtime!
There are at least 105 local music shows of one kind or another in the area throughout the weekend… we’ve got options!
No matter what direction you wanna get outta town, you can’t go wrong. Lots of springtime weekend activities and events are happening not only around Missoula, but all the way up the Flathead and the Bitterroot valleys, east to Phillipsburg and Anaconda, and out west past Alberton.
Patio season is officially here – get out and enjoy our locally-owned bars & restaurants with Montana grown / made food and beverages during the breaks in the rain. Try a new local brew! Support our local farmers and crafts people at the farmers markets. Take the family for a spring hike, or get the bikes out for a big ride. Catch a classic movie screening or a stand-up comedy night. Stretch that big brain at one of the local trivia nights. Sing your favorite karaoke song, or catch a live music show. Enjoy safely and responsibly.
Please confirm event details at the source before you go. Last minute changes are common, especially due to weather. With each event listing, we try to include a web page or event link with more information you can check for changes.

Race Director’s Message:
Thanks for your interest in the Missoula XC, a staple of mountain bike racing in Montana since 2010. We’re proud of the the duality of the relaxed, fun and a Euro, climbing style course. For 2023, we are bringing the crewneck sweatshirts and tube socks. Also, more racing. 4 days of racing starting on Thursday, June 8th.
The race and events business is supported by local sponsors. The Missoula XC is a way for pro and future pro riders to visit our town and also show support to our community. For coffee please visit Black Coffee Roasters in The Wren in Downtown Missoula. For drinks and fun visit the Dram Shop (Downtown or Midtown), Grizzly Liquor, and Big Sky Brewery. For food consider Wally & Buck, or Burns St. Bistro. If you are interested in properties or rentals talk with Jed at Zillastate. If you need Subaru work or your car brakes down let us know and we can get Ed at Kent Brothers on it. Our official race doctor and medical team is Rob Amrine, Missoula Bone and Joint and the Snowbowl Volunteer Ski Patrol. We are also supported by a thriving bike shop community: MTCX, Hellgate Cyclery, Missoula Bicycle Works, Missoula Bike Source, Big Sky Bikes should be your choices for service and support. Andrew Plant is our official race mechanic. He owns and operates Wild Fox Bikes. Please visit these locals businesses along the way. We are going to try and support you as much as possible. Whether it’s now or rooting for you at the Olympics. I travel the circuit as a professional announcer and love following the kids.
I get emotional writing about it, but the Missoula XC means so much to me and our community. Year 11, but better than ever. We are now in partnership with Marshall Mountain Park. They are a gold sponsor of the event but also partners in making the raddest bike park in America. Each year will get better. New this year, the Pro races will be broadcast on our local ABC Montana TV station KTMF, and available online.
Please come say hi to me at the race.
Welcome to Missoula and welcome to our community,
Shaun Radley

Red Onion Purple + Gabrielle Tusberg + Norwell
Zootown Arts Community Center / ZACC
16 W Main St, Missoula, Montana
$10 // $15 Artist Supporter Ticket
Gabrielle Tusberg is a singer songwriter from Portland, OR. Her inspiration comes from female songwriters like Lucinda Williams, Fiona Apple, and Sara Jarosz. Listening to Gabrielle’s songs tells a story about her life experiences, relationships, love lost, love gained, a changed perspective, with wit, sadness, and charm. Her songs will make you cry and laugh with her deepest thoughts and unleashed secrets.
With time spent in bands like Arrowleaf, No Fancy, Catamount, Mendelssohn, and The Skurfs, members of Norwell have been playing music around Missoula for more than a decade. In this form, they make songs that pair smartly with hands in pockets, long stares at the rim of a drink glass, or a mirthless Twitter scroll.
Red Onion Purple began as a musical duo featuring Sean Burress (guitar) and Bethany Joyce (cello) in 2013. After a few years of experimenting with their sound and adding different members, the group coalesced into the spellbinding force that it is today with the addition of Joshua Chai (drums) and Cole Grant (bass). The ethos of the band is one of constant experimentation; treating each song as a separate world to traverse, going a little deeper with each iteration. Red Onion Purple’s sound is accessible, yet hard to pin down; at times upbeat and whimsical, other times melancholy and mysterious. They play a mixture of original songs, jazz standards, and covers. Their first full length album, ‘Frightening Sights’, was released in May of 2022.

Jess Jocoy Music
Smelter City Brewing
101 Main St, Anaconda, Montana
Raised two hours south of Seattle, Jess grew up beneath the drizzling skies and lush landscapes of the Pacific Northwest. “I’m a mountain girl at heart,” she says, nodding to the scenery that shaped albums like her acclaimed debut, Such a Long Way, and its follow-up, Brighter Eyes, with the woozy, water colored beauty of her native Washington. She created both records in her adopted hometown of Nashville, a city whose songwriters had first captivated her attention as a child. Morning after morning, a young Jess would listen to records by Alan Jackson, Miranda Lambert, and Shania Twain on her way to school, building the foundation for the unique sound — a blend of northwestern and southeastern influences — that would eventually take her across America.

Fiddler on the Roof
Bigfork Center for the Performing Arts
526 Electric Ave, Bigfork, Montana
Based on Sholom Aleichem’s “Tevye and his Daughters,” “Fiddler on the Roof” is the beloved story of the small, tradition-steeped town of Anatevka, Russia, where Jews and Russians live in delicate balance. During the course of the show, the time honored traditions of Anatevka are both embraced and challenged by Tevye and his colorful community, as they witness his daughters, Tzeitel, Hodel and Chava, grow up and fall in love in a time of extraordinary change. Fiddler on the Roof’s Broadway premier became the longest-running Broadway musical in history, a title it maintained for almost 10 years. It is a story that captures the essential human longings for love, community, success, freedom, family, and meaning.
Songs include: “Sunrise, Sunset,” the boisterous “If I Were a Rich Man”, and the classic “Matchmaker, Matchmaker.”

We are pleased to announce the official release party for Jaden Decker’s new album, “Band of Angels” at the Sunrise Saloon in Missoula, MT on June 9 at 9:30 pm.
Jaden is a 17-year-old singer/songwriter who’s “Rocky Mountain Country” sound has made him one of Montana’s quickest rising stars.
Jaden’s piercing voice and picking skills shine through, to prove that he is an old soul with lots to say, and people are listening. Jaden picked up a guitar at the age of 6 and has not put it down since. At only 15, Decker booked his first national headlining tour independant from a label or agency.
Jade’s first album, “Montana Grown” released to rave reviews in 2020, which was followed up by a well received self-titled EP the following year. Jaden’s much anticipated junior album, “Band of Angels” was recorded at the iconic Blackbird Studios in Nashville, TN and will be available as digital download, and physical copies beginning on June 9, 2023.

“I met the new owners of The Hungry Bear in Condon last September, and immediately felt at home with them, their staff, and the awesome vibe. It was a great night of music, good food/drinks, and friendly patrons. I couldn’t wait to get back, and now that date is nearly here!
“The Bear” is situated in an amazing part of Montana on Highway 83 between Seeley Lake and Swan Lake. Some of the most gorgeous country in a state that features jillions of acres of beautiful country!
As per usual, I’ll be concocting some tasty original instrumentals, some created “on the spur of the moment,” plus will deliver tasteful arrangements of a bunch of your favorite tunes spanning five decades and a half dozen genres. You WILL have a chance to sing along! Have you met my sweet Martin D18 yet? Warm and wonderful tones, I’m tellin’ ya!
Tasty guitar playing, looping pedal, heartfelt vocals with harmony pedal, a wonderful venue, and you! See ya there? Cheers, EDJ”

Grease the Musical
Bigfork Summer Playhouse
526 Electric Ave, Bigfork, Montana
It’s 1959, and Rydell High School’s senior class is in rare form. The too-cool-for-school “Burger Palace Boys” are stealing hub-caps and acting tough and their gum-snapping, chain-smoking “Pink Ladies” are looking hot in bobby sox and pedal pushers. The 1950s high school dream is about to explode in this rollicking musical that is both an homage to the idealism of the fifties and a satire of high schoolers’ age-old desire to be rebellious, provocative and rebellious. At the heart of the story is the romance between hot-rodding gangster Danny Zuko and the sweet new girl in town, Sandy Dumbrowski. They had a secret romance in summer, but now back in the context of school, peer-pressure and cliques make their love a bit more complicated. Can Danny maintain his cool dude status and still get make demure Sandy his girl? The whole gang sings and dances around Danny and Sandy’s romance, through such hit songs as “Greased Lightnin’”, “We Go Together”, and “Mooning”, recalling the music of Buddy Holly, Little Richard and Elvis Presley that became the soundtrack of a generation. Starting off with an eight-year Broadway run, Grease is among the world’s most popular musicals and has a cult-like following, especially among teens!
Songs include: Summer Nights, Raining On Prom Night, Greased Lightning, Mooning, Freddy My Love, The Hand Jive and many more!

Richie picked up the guitar at age 11 and was soon playing in local bands through junior high and high school. After his father passed away in 1975, Richie moved to South Lake Tahoe to be near his Mother. While there, he met and joined The Live Wire Choir and toured the northwest for 4 years in a green, 1945 Flexible bus. They were signed to a one-album deal with Helios Records, based in Missoula, Montana and recorded the “Blue” album.
When L.W.C. disbanded in 1979, Richie left California and moved to Missoula. Richie toured with local bands such as “The Skanksters” (1986-1988), The Blazers”(1989-1991),”The Dreadbeats”(1991-1993) and was lucky enough to tour the beautiful Adariatic countries of Slovenia, Italy and Austria of Southern Central Europe with “The Psyclones” (1993) “The Shadows” (1994) “The Wolfrats (1995) and “The Sundogz” (1996).

Ben Larson & The Grown Ass Men
Smelter City Brewing
101 Main St, Anaconda, Montana
It is our pleasure to introduce Ben Larson and the Grown-Ass Men, born as a band in the midst of the pandemic in Philipsburg, Montana. A hare-brained builder, a retired soldier, a computer wizard, and a hermit farmer combine their vastly different life experiences into a completely original sound. With roots in bluegrass, western storytelling, National Guard Brass band, and a sugar high at an unsupervised daycare, the Grown-Ass Men keep audiences grooving until well past their bedtimes. Featuring blistering banjo solos, family-friendly singalongs, and four-part harmonies that will have you twisting your ear horns and politely asking for more, you can be confident that this sure as heck ain’t no boy band.
