Weekend PICKS: Thursday, April 28th thru Sunday, May 1st
Bye, April…Oh, hey May! The MUG has compiled the most comprehensive list of this weekend’s events in Missoula and around Western Montana, all right here for you to make your own Weekend PICKS.
Our own top of the list? Well, there’s Forestry Day on Saturday at Historic Museum Fort Missoula, back after a two-year hiatus. Also, Saturday night will be the big Adult Prom in Philipsburg – another chance to get it right! The YWCA’s Riverbank Run will happen in Midtown Missoula – and the weather looks pleasant.
We’re counting at least 77 music shows of one kind or another in the area. We’ve got options!
No matter what direction you wanna get outta town, you can’t go wrong. Activities and events are happening not only around Missoula, but all the way up the Flathead and the Bitterroot valleys, and Phillipsburg.
Get out and enjoy our locally-owned bars & restaurants with Montana grown / made food and beverages. Catch a classic movie screening or a stand-up comedy night. Stretch that big brain at one of the local trivia nights. Sing your favorite karaoke song, or catch a live music show. Enjoy safely and responsibly.
Please confirm event details at the source before you go. Last minute changes are common, especially due to weather. With each event listing, we try to include a web page or event link with more information you can check for changes.
Do you have a Western Montana event you would like to have included on The MUG? Click HERE to submit your event!
“May had now set in, but up here among the hills, she was May by curtesy only; or if she was May, she would never be might. She was, indeed, only April with her showers and sunshine, her tearful, childish laughter, and again the frown, and the despair irremediable. Nay, as if she still kept up a secret correspondence with her cousin March, banished for his rudeness, she would not very seldom shake from her skirts a snow storm, and oftener the dancing hail. Then out would come the sun behind her, and laugh, and say– “I could not help THAT; but here I am all the same, coming to you as fast as I can!”

Wallman and Dropout
This week we’ll kick off the Rattlesnake riding season with a double climb and descent on the Wallman and Dropout trails. We’ll start by climbing up Spring Gulch, flanked by trillium blooms, to the Wallman Saddle and descending down the east side to the Main Corridor. Then we’ll climb up Curry Gulch to Dropout and descend back to the parking lot. If anyone wants a shorter ride they can join in for the Wallman loop and then stay on the Main Corridor back to the parking lot. Meet at 6:00 pm at the Main Rattlesnake Trailhead parking area.
The east side of Wallman is going to be rerouted this year. Come out on Thursday to enjoy a descent on the old trail. Then return on Saturday to help MTB Missoula build the new trail. Get more details on the trail work day here:

The UM School of Theatre and Dance and School of Music are pleased to present ‘She Loves Me,’ a charming and romantic musical from the end of Broadway’s Golden Age. ‘She Loves Me’ follows the farcical travails of co-workers Amalia and Georg, who are combative competitors in a high-end Budapest perfume shop by day while unknowingly smitten with one another as anonymous pen pals outside the workplace. All performances will be held in the Montana Theatre in UM’s Performing Arts and Radio/Television Center.

Laney Lou and the Bird Dogs
Great Northern Bar
27 Central Avenue, Whitefish, Montana
Laney Lou and the Bird Dogs will be joined by Dan Dubuque, who kicks things off at 9:30!
Laney Lou and the Bird Dogs are an energetic Americana band from Bozeman, Montana, that infuses four-part harmonies, engaging songwriting, and rock-n-roll drive into a modern approach to traditional folk music. Coming from varied musical backgrounds, the five-person ensemble creates a sound unique to them, but one that finds common ground by adding the energy of Montana’s big sky country into their music. The Bird Dogs weave stories through their songs that are reflective, joyous, longing, or meant to share a journey with the listener. Through it all, the band is able to convey heartfelt honesty, getting the audience to immerse themselves in the moment by dancing, singing and laughing along. The Bird Dogs have been taking their infectious sound on the road since 2013, supporting acts such as The Travelin’ McCourys, The Steeldrivers, The Steep Canyon Rangers, The Jeff Austin Band, Amy Helm, Leftover Salmon, Town Mountain, and many more.
The most recent album from Laney Lou and the Bird Dogs, Through the Smoke, was recorded in February of 2021 at The Panoramic House in Stinson Beach, CA. This album is one of personal transformation. The concept of letting things go, processing past and current situations, and moving forward has been ever present in 2020-2021, as the world went through trials beyond words. Laney Lou and the Bird Dogs found a way to represent their journey through hardship, while also celebrating the silver linings and breakthrough moments in their lives. Through the Smoke brings energy to the darkness, and proves that resilience can get us through the hardest of times.

Laney Lou and the Bird Dogs w/ Hardwood Heart
Free Cycles
732 S 1st St W, Missoula, Montana

New York Ninja
The Roxy Theater
718 S Higgins Ave, Missoula, Montana
Presented by @sushihana_missoula
Taekwondo film legend John Liu stars as a New York everyman who, when pushed too far, is forced to take the law into his own hands and become “The New York Ninja” — a vigilante set on righting wrongs and keeping the peace in a Big Apple on the brink of chaos. Originally filmed in 1984, this martial arts riot was never completed and sat, unedited in a warehouse, for nearly 40 years before being finished by the staff at @vinegarsyndrome. New York Ninja was filmed entirely on 35mm in 1984, but the project was abandoned during production resulting in all original sound materials being lost over time. 35 years later, Vinegar Syndrome acquired the original unedited camera negative and painstakingly constructed and completed the film. Restored in 4K from the original camera elements, New York Ninja is finally available in all of its ridiculous over-the-top glory for the first time ever after spending nearly four decades in film obscurity.
