Weekend PICKS: Thursday, December 8th thru Sunday, December 11th
It’s full moon time in December, charge up those crystals and charge into the weekend! – but pace yourself for cryin’ out loud. There are tons of fantastic things holiday to get out and see and do. We’re here to help you match up your your quantity with quality.
Once again, The MUG has compiled the most comprehensive list of events in Missoula and around Western Montana, all right here for you to make your own Weekend PICKS – Thursday thru Sunday.
That cold snap we just had left us with fantastic snow conditions. The days ahead look entirely perfect for getting out there to shred the gnar. And (to paraphrase our favorite adventure hero Mandela), “it simply is not going to shred itself.” The Lolo Pass Visitor Center is having a Full Moon Event on Friday night with live bluegrass music, a community warming fire, and groomed skiing under the moon. Montana Snowbowl in Missoula, and Whitefish Mountain Resort open this weekend, along with Lost Trail, Discovery, and most other area resorts already skiing. Go!
The biggest of the Christmas / Holiday Bazaars & Markets happens Sunday with the Missoula Holiday MADE Fair at UM’s Adams Center. And there are a whole lot more holiday pop-ups and performances to choose from all over Western Montana. Scroll the Weekend PICKS listings to see ’em all. You’ll see it’s time to bust out that ugly Christmas sweater – you’re gonna need it wherever you go. Nearby or a short road trip away, you’ll find plenty of winter wonderlands to choose from.
Thursday night finds country star Clint Black performing with his wife Lisa Hartman Black, and daughter Lily Pearl at the Wachholz College Center in Kalispell. The White Buffalo storms into The Wilma for a raucous country show Friday.
We’re counting at least 80 music shows of one kind or another in the area. We’ve got options!
No matter what direction you wanna get outta town, you can’t go wrong. Activities and events are happening not only around Missoula, but all the way up the Flathead and the Bitterroot valleys, east to Phillipsburg and Anaconda, and out west past Alberton.
Get out and enjoy our locally-owned bars & restaurants with Montana grown / made food and beverages. Support our local farmers and crafts people. Go for a crisp hike or get in your first ski of the season! Catch a classic movie screening or a stand-up comedy night. Stretch that big brain at one of the local trivia nights. Sing your favorite karaoke song, or catch a live music show. Enjoy safely and responsibly.
Please confirm event details at the source before you go. Last minute changes are common, especially due to weather. With each event listing, we try to include a web page or event link with more information you can check for changes.

Tom has a unique musical gift that manifests when he meets a group of vagabonds and buskers. Tom hatches a plan to help and learns what it means to live in a community that cares for each other.
Performances are on December 8 thru December 10 at 7:30 pm, with Sunday matinee on December 11 at 2:00 pm in The Masquer Theatre at the University of Montana. Please note, Hearth contains atmospheric effects(haze/fog/flashing lights), adult language, and a moment of violence.
“Hearth” is co-written by local artists Kate R. Morris and Tyson Gerhardt. Montana Rep commissioned the play from Morris and Gerhardt last season and workshopped it in front of live audiences. $10 // $15 Artist Supporter Ticket
Tuskerz is a synth metal pop 3 piece out of Missoula. They play their music so that you can explore middle earth, save Arakis, and dance a jig or mosh. It’s Tuskers Time.
Wildlands is an aspiring three piece Indie Pop band based out of Missoula. The band’s goal is to create and perform electrifying pop music for all to enjoy. It was formed by singer/songwriter Benjamin Medina Caplis while he was in Highschool. Benjamin played in many different bands in highschool but felt left out of the creative process. He decided to create his own project and named it Wildlands. Wildlands grew when Benjamin went to the UM School of Music and met bassist Josh Streit and Drummer Dylan Vandeberg. After gaining two new members Wildlands officially started gigging in the Missoula/Montana Area. The power of songwriting and the chemistry between the members creates an infectious atmosphere full of excitement, heartbreak and blissful ignorance. Wildlands is here to inspire and let the good times roll.

Artist Talks: Imaging the Sacred
Missoula Art Museum
335 N. Pattee Street, Missoula, Montana
The four women in this exhibition—Talia Roberts, Birdie Hall, April Werle, and Daphne Sweet—make work that share a thematic focus on spirituality. All approach artmaking as a restorative practice – reclaiming materials, images, and archetypes, telling stories, kindling spiritual traditions, and observing rituals, the passage of time, and the progression of the seasons. Each artist draws on the Earth, their diasporas, and their corporality to reimagine histories, reconnect to the natural world, and reclaim the power and positivity of women’s bodies.
“We turn toward nature by gazing into the sky or looking under our feet to find our place in the universe,” Roberts said.
The artists were invited to create new work for this exhibition. They respond to a wide range of religious traditions and concepts of spiritual power, from mysticism to planetary properties to representations of feminine divinity. Their individual experiences, drives, and curiosities manifest in wildly varied personal symbolism.
All four artists will speak about their work on Thursday December 8, from 5:30 pm to 7:00 pm at the Missoula Art Museum.

Monk’s Bar

Tickets are $10 in advance or $15 at the door.
The Waiting is a rock ‘n roll band from Bozeman, Montana, that celebrates the music of Tom Petty. Not exactly a “cover” or “tribute” band, The Waiting is—in the spirit of The Heartbreakers—first and foremost a BAND: a motley mix of musicians and friends interpreting the songs of one of rock’s greatest songwriters and musicians, the legendary Tom Petty.
The band’s motto is “We bring the Petty to your town,” and since 2013, they’ve been doing exactly that all across the Northwest Corridor. Whether it’s one of Tom Petty’s smash hits with the Heartbreakers, a sampling from his solo albums, or even a collaboration with the Traveling Wilburys, The Waiting runs the gamut, performing each tune with undeniable, fiery live energy and devotion to showing each person in the crowd a damn good time.

December is often a time to get cozy, be introspective, and reflect on Love—whether that be a romantic lover, love for our community, love for our children, or love of our extended family. Music acts as a catalyst both to a thoughtful perspective of one’s way of living on earth and for this reflection on love. With songs like Jake Runestad’s Let my Love Be Heard, Daniel Elder’s Lullaby, and Eric Whitacre’s Five Hebrew Love Songs, Dolce Canto invites you to a jumping off point for the introspection of love with the program Love in December.

Austin Britton cut his teeth musically in the Omaha, NE music scene that produced the likes of Bright Eyes and Simon Joyner. Austin now calls Missoula home and has been playing around town for a couple of years. He has a sound based in robust lyricism and melody. His debut album ‘A Light for the Next Hour’ is on all streaming platforms.
Miss A & the Caravan Band is a Missoula based American Folk group led by singer-songwriter Alana D. Damron, aka Miss A & Miss Alaneous on Spotify and iTunes. Miss A was born in Havre, MT but raised in the deep south as a vagabond preacher’s daughter, has traveled the world, and finally found home in the western mountains of Montana. Like a caravan of sojourners who travel together to help each other survive the journey, Miss A has gathered a group of her musical friends to help make her spirited road-tripping tunes for anyone who wants to come along for the ride. The sound of Miss A and the Caravan Band is inspired by Needtobreathe, The Civil Wars, and John Mayer’s 2 Montana Projects. You can find Miss A’s original songs wherever you stream music and join the Caravan Crew at a music venue near you soon!
Dylan Running Crane is a singer-songwriter from Browning, Montana – a place that remains the subject of most of her work. Her vibe is country meets rez-folk meets tender and silly.
