Weekend PICKS: Thursday, February 23rd thru Sunday, February 26th

The MUG has compiled the most comprehensive list of events in Missoula and around Western Montana, all right here for you to make your own Weekend PICKS – Thursday thru Sunday!
With this endless winter we’ve been having, skiing conditions are prime with no end in sight. The frigid temps are forecast to moderate, taking away most of our excuses to stay inside. Check ahead for the local snow reports, and go! Many of the local cross-country and fat biking hotspots are being groomed and skiied. Get out and shred that gnar!
There are around 90 local music shows of one kind or another in the area throughout the weekend. We’ve got options!
No matter what direction you wanna get outta town, you can’t go wrong. Lots weekend activities and events are happening not only around Missoula, but all the way up the Flathead and the Bitterroot valleys, east to Phillipsburg and Anaconda, and out west past Alberton.
Get out and enjoy our locally-owned bars & restaurants with Montana grown / made food and beverages. Support our local farmers and crafts people. Take the family for a crisp hike or some amazing skiing. Catch a classic movie screening or a stand-up comedy night. Stretch that big brain at one of the local trivia nights. Sing your favorite karaoke song, or catch a live music show. Enjoy safely and responsibly.
Please confirm event details at the source before you go. Last minute changes are common, especially due to weather. With each event listing, we try to include a web page or event link with more information you can check for changes.

THURSDAY, February 23
Once you get rid of the idea that you must please other people before you please yourself, and you begin to follow your own instincts – only then can you be successful. You become more satisfied, and when you are, other people will tend to be satisfied by what you do.

Inspired by our Undressing History exhibit, the Historical Museum at Fort Missoula is excited to host History Head to Toe, a community fashion show. This event celebrates the stories that our clothing tells, from the stories of historic figures to the stories of our everyday lives. Enjoy light refreshments and beverages while you mingle with those in costume and hear their stories. We encourage everyone to dress up and bring your own stories to share!
Call for Participants!
Do your clothes have a story to tell? The Historical Museum at Fort Missoula is looking for people to model their own historic outfits at our History Head to Toe event on Thursday, February 23rd. Historic costumes can be vintage, recreations, or even something that represents your modern history! Do you have a dress from your grandmother, the outfit you were wearing when your partner kissed you for the first time, or perhaps a suit you made to replicate the regency era? Any and all outfits are welcome as long as they have a story to tell about the people and times they represent. Please note: These are not donations to the museum, we want people to wear the outfit during the event and talk with the visitors about the story.

Czech Republic – Cycling Back Into Time
Ride back in time with Karen to the Czech Republic to immerse yourself in central European culture and scenery. From the gothic spires and bridges of the “Golden City” of Prague to 14th century castles to a sleepy countryside dotted with storybook villages, Karen & and a group of friends cycled an 11 day self-guided trip from Prague to Vienna, Austria. Learn the basic techniques of West African hand drumming and experience the joy and power of community music-making. Extra drums will be available and no previous experience is necessary.
DRUM BROTHERS present high energy performances that celebrate a diverse mix of world instruments and sounds: West African djembe and dunun drums, Middle Eastern frame drums, Australian didgeridoo, close harmony vocals, acoustic and electric guitar, bass, and original arrangements and compositions. They’ve performed at numerous venues throughout the Northwest and Canada, have been a featured act at the Seattle World Percussion Festival, and have shared the stage with Ladysmith Black Mambazo. They’ve also been featured on the award winning PBS series, 11th and Grant with Eric Funk. Drum Brothers have been at the forefront of the American hand drumming movement since it began in the early 1990s. Over the years, they have offered numerous school and community rhythm classes, drum circles, and more recently, interactive team building events for organizations and community groups. The ensemble is comprised of brothers Matthew and Michael Marsolek, Tracy Topp, and brothers Nyon and Ravi Marsolek.
POINT of INTEREST: Since 2021, Drum Brothers have been featuring the next generation of family performers, Matthew and Tracy’s sons, Nyon and Ravi Marsolek. Multi-instrumentalists raised in an environment of music-making, rhythm events, and numerous road trips, they’re contributing greatly to the new sound of the band with bass and electric guitar, percussion, and vocals.

Funky, surfy, rock propelled by Scott’s virtuosic guitar playing!
About SPOT: Scott Pemberton O Theory
Timber Rock from Portland, Oregon
—————————————————
– “The Bruce Lee of Guitar” – Tahoe Onstage
– “A modern day Jimi Hendrix” – Chico Enterprise
Scott is an emerging force on the festival circuit, with his wild approach to the guitar and nimble funky band he is immediately recognizable and undeniably original. The mastery of his guitar playing combined with the fun recklessness of his songwriting show that the rules of songwriting and playing the guitar no longer exist for him. He doesn’t use a strap, often plays the guitar like someone would play piano and performs with the uninhibited joy and intensity of someone who recognizes that every time we make music is an honor and a gift.

Paul, who also plays guitar, mandolin and bass, formed the band with friends Jack Tolan (guitars, mandolin, vocals) and Eric Shedd (bass, mandolin, guitar and vocals) after winning a solo competition at the 2018 Telluride Blues & Brews Festival, along with a Telluride Arts District grant to record an album. They released Anthrophony in 2019.
The trio became a foursome after meeting classically trained violinist and vocalist Anneke Dean in 2020. Sharing a love of wide-open spaces, they created Murmurations Vol. 1 as a concept album expressing their “deep reverence for these magnificent places, and the awe, respect and wonder that exude from that reverence.”
When American Songwriter magazine premiered the Vol. 1 track “Gale and Doug,” it noted the song’s “special, earthy feeling,” adding, “the musicianship exhibited is what really makes the track something extraordinary.” The beauty continues on Murmurations Vol. 2, which contains eight songs filled with intricately woven acoustic arrangements and tight harmonies that swoop and soar together just like those starlings.

King Ropes, Pit, and Bluest
The Badlander

About King Ropes
Super Natural, King Ropes’ fifth album, is full of open spaces and jagged edges. Guitars scrape and whine. Amps rumble. Rickety pianos rattle in and out of tune. Like Montana, the band’s home, nothing is too refined. At the center of it all is singer and frontman Dave Hollier, a gifted songwriter at the top of his game, surveying a land haunted by doomed relationships and hypocrite ideologues in his odd, quivering voice. The songs convey a world that is remarkably gorgeous but also harsh and unforgiving, dark and foreboding.
About Bluest
Bluest is an indie rock band out of Missoula MT, orchestrated by the longings and hauntings of Noelle Huser. Her songs walk the knife edge of nostalgic confession, using that edge to cut through the assumption that softness is weak. Her anger pleas with an earnest empathy a la diary-scrawled lyrics that pay homage to 90s/00s angst pop and country influences like Alanis Morissette and Sheryl Crow. Bluest’s debut album Cold Sweat, sifts through dreams and nightmares to find solace by serenading ghosts, emboldened with a hunger to return from dissociation back into the body. Huser finds her head in the clouds, heart on her sleeve and feet on the ground running into the unknown.
