Weekend PICKS: Thursday July 6 thru Sunday, July 9th
Didn’t we just wrap up last weekend, like yesterday?! Oh well – we’ll take another one! The MUG has compiled the most comprehensive list of events in Missoula and around Western Montana, all right here for you to make your own Weekend PICKS!
River season is underway! Be safe and smart if you’re getting out on our local rivers.
Summer Farmers Markets season is in full swing, with all the area markets now open. It’s First Friday in Downtown Missoula, Hamilton and some of our area towns with art & music strolls to wind down the work week.
There are more than 75 local music shows of one kind or another in the area throughout the weekend… we have options!
No matter what direction you wanna get outta town, you can’t go wrong. Lots of summertime weekend activities and events are happening not only around Missoula, but all the way up the Flathead and the Bitterroot valleys, east to Phillipsburg and Anaconda, and out west past Alberton. If you’re headed up to Glacier, there are some outstanding pit stops to make along the way. Road trip!
It’s prime patio season – get out and enjoy our locally-owned bars & restaurants with Montana grown / made food and beverages on a sunny day. Try a new local brew! Support our local farmers and crafts people at the farmers markets. Take the family for an early summer hike, or get the bikes out for a big ride. Catch a classic movie screening or a stand-up comedy night. Stretch that big brain at one of the local trivia nights. Sing your favorite karaoke song, or catch a live music show. Enjoy safely and responsibly.
Please confirm event details at the source before you go. Last minute changes are common, especially due to weather. With each event listing, we try to include a web page or event link with more information you can check for changes.

Alien Boy & GLARE
Zootown Arts Community Center / ZACC
216 W Main St, Missoula, Montana
$15 Advance // $20 DOS
Alien Boy is guitarist and songwriter Sonia Weber, drummer Derek McNeil, and a rotating cast of Portland, Oregon scene stalwarts. As her band’s Wipers-inspired name might imply, Weber is a PDX lifer, and anyone who’s spent time in the last decade’s DIY circuit will recognize something undeniably West Coast in Alien Boy’s sound: a sharpened, focused take on the heavy guitar pop of the 1980’s, chorus pedals and punishing drums the canvas for bold strokes of recollection and yearning. (Nathan Tucker)
GLARE is “Texas Shoegaze”.

Jimmy Buffet’s “Escape to Margaritaville”
Bigfork Summer Playhouse
526 Electric Ave, Bigfork, Montana
PG-14
Book by Emmy Award winner Greg Garcia and Emmy nominee Mike O’Malley
Music & Lyrics by Jimmy Buffett
This musical tells the story of a sweet romance between an island-dweller and a tourist, using the music of Jimmy Buffett. It is just what it promises: an escape to a warm climate full of singing, dancing, and tequila.
The musical, which premiered in 2017, has music and lyrics by Jimmy Buffett with a book written by Greg Garcia and Mike O’Malley. Singer Tully works at a run-down beach resort called Margaritaville alongside a bartender named Brick. He’s happy to spend his days relaxing and flirting with the tourists, while avoiding anything that looks like commitment.
Meanwhile, environmental scientist Rachel is reluctant to take a break from work to go on vacation with her best friend Tammy. Rachel can’t stand Tammy’s jerkish fiancé Chadd and is dreading their wedding when they return from Margaritaville.
While Rachel is dismayed that the resort is not as nice as it looked online and to find out that she has no phone service on the island and thus can’t keep working, she is eventually able to get into the island spirit with some help. Tully and Brick spend time with Rachel and Tammy and sparks fly between the two couples. But after Rachel and Tammy return to Cincinnati, will anything become of their romances?
Songs include: “Cheeseburger in Paradise”, “Margaritaville,” “It’s Five O’Clock Somewhere,” “Fins,” “Volcano,” and many more.

Grease The Musical
Bigfork Center for the Performing Arts
526 Electric Ave, Bigfork, Montana
$35 Adults / $30 Seniors 65+ / $22 Children 10 & Under
It’s 1959, and Rydell High School’s senior class is in rare form. The too-cool-for-school “Burger Palace Boys” are stealing hub-caps and acting tough and their gum-snapping, chain-smoking “Pink Ladies” are looking hot in bobby sox and pedal pushers. The 1950s high school dream is about to explode in this rollicking musical that is both an homage to the idealism of the fifties and a satire of high schoolers’ age-old desire to be rebellious, provocative and rebellious. At the heart of the story is the romance between hot-rodding gangster Danny Zuko and the sweet new girl in town, Sandy Dumbrowski. They had a secret romance in summer, but now back in the context of school, peer-pressure and cliques make their love a bit more complicated. Can Danny maintain his cool dude status and still get make demure Sandy his girl? The whole gang sings and dances around Danny and Sandy’s romance, through such hit songs as “Greased Lightnin’”, “We Go Together”, and “Mooning”, recalling the music of Buddy Holly, Little Richard and Elvis Presley that became the soundtrack of a generation. Starting off with an eight-year Broadway run, Grease is among the world’s most popular musicals and has a cult-like following, especially among teens!
Songs include: Summer Nights, Raining On Prom Night, Greased Lightning, Mooning, Freddy My Love, The Hand Jive and many more!
