Weekend PICKS: Thursday, June 1st thru Sunday, June 4th
Well, hello June! The MUG has compiled the most comprehensive list of events in Missoula and around Western Montana, all right here for you to make your own Weekend PICKS!
Thursday sees the return of Downtown Tonight at Caras Park. First Friday is happening in Downtown Missoula, as well as in Stevensville and Bigfork. Summer Farmers Markets season is in full swing, with more opening up this weekend (Frenchtown, Thursday; Lone Rock Farmers Market in Stevi, Saturday). Rodeos are starting to turn up all over. Surf’s up on our local rivers. It’s green and pleasant everywhere. It feels like we haven’t seen June looking this pretty since Leave It to Beaver!
There are at least 105 local music shows of one kind or another in the area throughout the weekend… we’ve got options!
No matter what direction you wanna get outta town, you can’t go wrong. Lots of springtime weekend activities and events are happening not only around Missoula, but all the way up the Flathead and the Bitterroot valleys, east to Phillipsburg and Anaconda, and out west past Alberton.
Patio season is officially here – get out and enjoy our locally-owned bars & restaurants with Montana grown / made food and beverages. Try a new local brew! Support our local farmers and crafts people at the farmers markets. Take the family for a spring hike, or get the bikes out for a big ride. Catch a classic movie screening or a stand-up comedy night. Stretch that big brain at one of the local trivia nights. Sing your favorite karaoke song, or catch a live music show. Enjoy safely and responsibly.
Please confirm event details at the source before you go. Last minute changes are common, especially due to weather. With each event listing, we try to include a web page or event link with more information you can check for changes.

June 2nd for Maia Gabrielle’s (@umamimamicreations_ ) artwork from 5:00 pm – 8:00 pm (and all month long) and have a beverage with Betty V Vintage!
Artist and creator Maia Gabrielle has been a life long resident of Missoula, as well as a life long painter.
From a very early age, Maia’s maternal grandmother (Carole DeMarinis) taught them how to water color, load a paint brush, and all sorts of other artistic skills and techniques. From there, Maia’s love of art really blossomed and developed from there.
Since 2020, Maia has left the work force and opened up an art company called UmamiMami Creations, which produces a myriad of original paintings, as well as prints and apparel. With UmamiMami Creations, Maia has been able to be a driving force in her own life, and has been involved with many First Friday events, is part of the Missoula Makers Collective, and has participated in various forms of fundraisers and pop up vending events. Maia & UmamiMami Creations focus predominantly on femme based figures for their art, with bright & psychedelic colors. Much of the process of painting these abstract, surreal femme bodies helps much with their own trauma and alienation with their own body.
Maia also has started incorporating more animal like beings into their art, to give homage to Montana, where they still reside.

If Jimmy Buffett, James Taylor and John Prine were joined together in some bizarre musical cloning experiment, the outcome would be John Dunnigan. This “offbeat” musician and entertainer took the backroads to Montana over three decades ago and never left (he’s no fool). His original, often hilarious songs make you think, laugh, sing along and raise your glass in a toast to life. In short, he can put a smile on your face.

Jaden Decker
The Old Post
103 W. Spruce Street, Missoula, Montana
Jaden Decker is a country music performer from Missoula, Montana. Drawing on his family’s midwestern roots, Jaden’s music is fueled by a goal to blend country/americana with a psychedelic jam-band sound, to ultimately create his labeled genre of “Rocky Mountain Country.” The 16-year-old played 70+ shows in 2022, embarking on two national tours, which were both completely independently booked.
Jaden’s live performance consists of him and his acoustic guitar, accompanied by a pedalboard, which greatly adds to the jam-band sound, previously mentioned. Decker knows how to get a crowd moving, and his live set reflects that beautifully. Taking the audience on a journey, they are not only left in awe by the 16-year-old, but it feels as if there is also a connection created between Jaden and the crowd.

Bluest ‘Cold Sweat’ Album Release ft. Les Duck and Tiny Iota
Zootown Arts Community Center / ZACC
216 W Main St, Missoula, Montana
$10 // $15 Artist Supporter
Bluest is an indie band out of Missoula, Montana, orchestrated by the lyrical hauntings of Noelle Huser, brought into fruition with full band instrumentation, Erin Szalda-Petree on lead guitar, back up vox, Duncan Szalda-Petree on bass, Ally Fradkin on keys and Caleb Tutty on drums. Their debut album ‘Cold Sweat’ released on May 5, 2023 through Anything Bagel.
‘Cold Sweat’ sifts through dreams and nightmares to find solace by serenading ghosts, emboldened with a hunger to return from dissociation back into the body. Huser finds her head in the clouds, heart on her sleeve, and feet on the ground running into the unknown … Come out and kick off the summer celebrating the Bluest release dressed in your bluest best.
Tiny Iota writes tiny songs that scream like a dust mite into the eternal abyss. Flavored with a fondness for doo wop and punk, their debut album HUBBUB, released May 2022 is an ode to overthinking, toeing the line between anxiety and acceptance and finding solace in uncertainty. For this special evening, tiny will be even more minuscule, playing an intimate solo set.
Les Duck, fka Dint 2, is all about fast cars, slow guitars, avatar 2 the way of water, family, and friendship. Lukas Phelan and Sanders Smith trade songs exploring those very themes while Nate Biehl rips the pedal steel and James Rogers tickles the drums.

Veterans & active duty service members always attend for free as the group’s way of saying “thank you for your service”. And the best part? As part of our mission to make veterans smile, these performers bring the family-friendly version of our show & gifts to hospitalized veterans across America who aren’t able to make it out to our nightlife events.

Barncat Country Band + Strummingbird Vegabond + Johnny Carl
Zootown Arts Community Center / ZACC
216 W Main St, Missoula, Montana
$10 // $15 Artist Supporter Ticket
Barncat Country Band formed in 2021 to explore the energy found deep in the roots of old-time country music. Roadhouse country, Texas swing, the Bakersfield sound, bluegrass, and country blues all combine and erupt on stage in a ball of fiery twang! Come dance your boots bare to the raw energy of Rocky Mountain Honky-tonk at its finest.
Strummingbird Vegabond is a local trio formed around the songwriting of Rebecca Kelley. Becca has been playing acoustic guitar since 2005 and is very stoked to be joined by local musician Britt Arnesen on bass, as well as local drummer Damien Margo. Together they have been playing gigs all around town, and also recorded their first album, called Summer Triangle, in fall 2022. Find it and also Becca’s first EP on all major music platforms, and also at strummingbirdvegabond.bandcamp.com.
Johnny Carl grew up in Missoula and has been homeschooled since he was 10. Johnny’s father taught him guitar, and he’s been playing and singing for the last 4 years. While he was growing up his parents listened to a wide variety of music – he was exposed to everything from the early days of country, jazz, and blues, to the rock and roll, to pop. He draws inspiration from his childhood exposure to all genres and from his huge collection of 78rpm records and LPs.

Fiddler on the Roof
Bigfork Center for the Performing Arts
526 Electric Ave, Bigfork, Montana
Based on Sholom Aleichem’s “Tevye and his Daughters,” “Fiddler on the Roof” is the beloved story of the small, tradition-steeped town of Anatevka, Russia, where Jews and Russians live in delicate balance. During the course of the show, the time honored traditions of Anatevka are both embraced and challenged by Tevye and his colorful community, as they witness his daughters, Tzeitel, Hodel and Chava, grow up and fall in love in a time of extraordinary change. Fiddler on the Roof’s Broadway premier became the longest-running Broadway musical in history, a title it maintained for almost 10 years. It is a story that captures the essential human longings for love, community, success, freedom, family, and meaning.
Songs include: “Sunrise, Sunset,” the boisterous “If I Were a Rich Man”, and the classic “Matchmaker, Matchmaker.”

$25 – $32 Advance Tickets (+ applicable fees)
With a fresh and modern sound infused with classic elements of folk, country, and pop, BIG SKY CITY LIGHTS is heading home to the Flathead Valley, the birthplace of their partnership, for this very special evening of story and song. After a year of touring the city lights of New York, Nashville and the Pacific Northwest, the duo is very excited to be back in big sky country with their full band in concert. Big Sky City Lights weaves effortlessly from the intimate stillness of duos like Simon & Garfunkel and The Civil Wars to the powerhouse vocals of Heart and Brandi Carlile. Their special brand of stripped-down contemporary folk-pop landed BIG SKY CITY LIGHTS a feature on Good Morning America and coveted spots at major music festivals, including Sisters Folk Festival and Under The Big Sky Festival on the bill with Jason Isbell, Emmylou Harris, and others.
