Independence Day Weekend PICKS: Thursday, June 30th thru Monday, July 4th

The extended Independence Day weekend is here, and The MUG has compiled the most comprehensive list of events in Missoula and around Western Montana, all right here for you to make your own Weekend PICKS.
Independence Day festivals celebrations are happening all over throughout the weekend, including on Monday, July 4th. We’ll have First Friday in Downtown Missoula, Polson and a handful of other towns that are doing the same. Summer rodeo season hits its stride with big events in Philipsburg and Arlee.
We’re counting over 100 music shows of one kind or another in the area. We’ve got options! Seek out the outdoors and rooftop music under the stars.
Farmers markets season is well underway in Western Montana. You’ll find ’em here, and for a complete list of nearly three dozen in the area, check out our Western Montana Farmers Markets story posted recently on The MUG.
No matter what direction you wanna get outta town, you can’t go wrong. Activities and events are happening not only around Missoula, but all the way up the Flathead and the Bitterroot valleys, east to Phillipsburg and Anaconda, and out west past Alberton.
Get out and enjoy our locally-owned bars & restaurants with Montana grown / made food and beverages. Support our local farmers and crafts people. Catch a classic movie screening or a stand-up comedy night. Stretch that big brain at one of the local trivia nights. Sing your favorite karaoke song, or catch a live music show. Enjoy safely and responsibly.
Please confirm event details at the source before you go. Last minute changes are common, especially due to weather. With each event listing, we try to include a web page or event link with more information you can check for changes.

First Friday with Becky Bowie
Betty V Vintage
104 East Main St, Missoula, Montana
This month’s artist uses mixed media to create unique up-cycled pieces.
The inspiration for Box 39 came while sourcing materials. Becky acquired the contents of Box 39: a PO Box of one Mollie Jerman dating back to the early 1900s. This discovery compelled her to use the memories and stories of others to tell her own. Since then, Box 39 has been transformed into collages, assemblage pieces, ephemera, vintage everything, and up-cycled found items. Many of these materials comprise her little (literally, little) magical spaces for emotions, thoughts, and experiences to live.
Pop in for some great vintage clothes, a libation, and really cool art!

It’s a rare opportunity to experience the ultra-local version he really set out to make, Smetanka tells us: “This is the one I dreamed about making,” he says. “For the rest of the world, Missoula might take some explaining. Trombone Shorty’s Voodoo Threauxdown featuring Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue
KettleHouse Amphitheater
605 Cold Smoke Lane, Bonner, Montana
$38 – $52 Advance Tickets
ABOUT TROMBONE SHORTY’S VOODOO THREAUXDOWN
Trombone Shorty’s Voodoo Threauxdown is a curated mini-festival, a history of New Orleans music and a vision of where that music is headed in the 21st century. “I want to share the music and the vibe of my city,” Trombone Shorty says.
Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue’s music respects Crescent City traditions while pushing the boundaries of those traditions, adding pop, rock and hip-hop influences. “Allen Toussaint told me, ‘Learn everything you can, take everything you can from us, but don’t be us,’” Shorty says. “The responsibility put on me is to move the music forward.”
The other artists on the Threauxdown–Tank and the Bangas, Big Freedia, Cyril Neville the Uptown Ruler, George Porter, Jr. and Dumpstaphunk playing the music of The Meters, and The Soul Rebels–are of the same mindset. Together, they represent different generations coming together to celebrate and advance the sounds of New Orleans in one jam-packed night of live music and collaboration. “These are people that I grew up listening to, people I came up with, and people who have been inspired by me and my band. It’s the full package and an expression of what is unique and beautiful about New Orleans.”
All concerts are held rain or shine. Be prepared for extremes such as sunshine, heat, wind or rain. All tickets are non-refundable. In the event of cancellation due to extreme weather, tickets will not be refunded.

“Dude sings like James Brown… bass is less slap and more groove.” – The Stranger
“A sound that’s downright impossible to resist.” – Seattle Weekly
‘No Retreat, No Return, No Surrender.’ – The Down North Motto
There are some performers who come to music later in life. Then, there are folks who you can just tell were voracious students and consumers of music since before they could talk. Seattle / Los Angeles / North Carolina based quartet Down North fall squarely into the latter group. Trying to pin genre tags onto their unique brand of psych-infused punk soul is an exercise in futility. These creatives pick and choose just-right bits and flavors drawn from the whole of modern western music like painters with unlimited palates.
Self-described as New Wave Soul and Roll, Trans Future’s sound reflects the eclectic influences that warrant the inventive term, but a closer listen reveals their music is as much about what’s not there as what is. Each musician’s part is salient and distinct, but leaves space for the musical conversation to unfold. While space can be what makes things fall apart, the space TF creates is the architectural element that holds their music so tightly together. Space seems to come naturally to a band who formed in early 2020, masked and distanced, in the height of the pandemic. Their new album, Scream on the Inside, is out now!

The sanity of everyone involved is stretched to the limit as the group’s quirks cause epic problems as they travel along their interstate route.

“I was born and raised in the mountains of Wyoming, and was instilled with a deep love of the land, the people, and our heritage at an early age. As a teenager I was paid a little extra to play guitar and sing classic cowboy songs to guests when working on ranches in the mountains of Wyoming. It wasn’t long before I tried my hand at writing – some were bad and some were worse. But perseverance and playing the odds sometimes pays off and I found the most exhilarating and free form of expression.
I draw musical inspiration from a wide array of sources; traditional folk, blues, jazz, modern rock, pop, country and alternative. Yet when writing, I usually start with the intent of staying honest to my roots, but end up while walking the edge of tradition at times. “You need to let the song take you where it wants to go, and often slips into a modern vibe of fresh influences.”

“Fireworks” is a Schoolhouse Rock! segment, featuring a song of the same title written by Lynn Ahrens. The segment debuted as part of “America Rock”, the third season of the Schoolhouse Rock series, in 1975. The song was performed by Grady Tate. It is about the Declaration of Independence and the reasons behind America’s 4th of July celebration.
